Fully assembled field kit for experimenting with electro acoustic sound
Notes: The new KOMA Elektronik Field Kit is the perfect tool for everyone who would like to experiment with electro acoustic sound. Use everyday objects, amplify them and use them to make sound, like our heroes John Cage and David Tudor used to do!

The Field Kit is optimized to process signals from microphones, contact microphones, electromagnetic pickups and able to run DC motors and solenoids. On top of that it can receive radio signals and convert signals from switches and sensors into control voltage!

Let's get more detailed...

The Field Kit boasts 7 separate functional blocks all focussed on receiving or generating all types of signals. They are designed to operate together as a coherent electroacoustic workstation or alternatively together with other pieces of music electronics with the ability to use control voltage signals.

The Four Channel Mixer is the beating heart of the Field Kit, providing a fully functional mixer with individual Gain, Mix Level and Tone control over each channel and individual Master- and Aux sub-mixes.

The level of the Master and Aux Channels can be set with the Master Volume and Aux Volume controls and the channels being sent to the Aux sub-mix can be set with dedicated Aux Select-buttons. The Aux sub-mix is pre-fader.

The CV Radio is a CV-controllable radio receiver capable of receiving radio frequencies on AM/FM and SW bands. Additionally it provides the ability to catch electromagnetic waves for further processing inside the Field Kit. The frequency of the radio can be set with a dedicated multifunctional Search-control which acts both as a manual CV-source and as an input attenuator for a CV-signal.

The Envelope Follower in the Field Kit applies two functions to the waveform you send to the input: full-wave rectification (mirroring of negative portions of the waveform) and low-pass filtering (averaging). It can also be used for frequency doubling of a signal, which is a great tool to have in the electroacoustic domain.

The Low Frequency Oscillator generates periodically varying voltages to be used as control signals. The output waveform can be set with a three-position Waveform-control and gives out either a Square-, Triangle- or a mix of Square and Triangle waveforms.

A very cool function of the Field Kit is the DC Interface. You can use its output voltages to run little motors, fans, solenoids, buzzers and control them with control voltage signals. You can pick up the vibrations and electromagnetic waves with the contact microphones and electromagnetic pickup.

The Signal Interface is a nifty toolset to transform the raw signals of a wide variety of sensors and switches into signals that can be used with the Field Kit or other gear. This means you can trigger or control sound by light, heat, humidity, distance, speed, acceleration, proximity, pressure, force, level, all depending on what type of switch or sensor you are using! Ideal for sound installations!

4 stage function generator or ADSR module - 8HP
Notes: CONTOUR is a 4 Stage function generator, or ADSR, derived from our 0-COAST synthesizer. It is designed to create control voltages to drive the Dynamix, modDemix and other fast VCAs, VCFs, and more. The Contour takes inspiration from the original Loudness Contour circuit of the MiniMoog, which is perhaps the most well-known example of East Coast Synthesis. The simplified control set (where Decay adjust both the decay to Sustain and the Release) makes it quick and intuitive to set-up. The Contour module adds full voltage control, a mirrored output, End of Onset and End of Contour Gate outputs which allow it to be highly integrated into any modular synthesizer regardless of coastal allegiance.

2 channel low-pass gate with integrated mixer - 10HP
Notes: DYNAMIX is a fast two-channel Low Pass Gate, dynamics manager and mixer, the core of which is derived from our 0-COAST synthesizer. The LEVEL parameter provides simultaneous voltage control over the Amplitude and Frequency content of audio signals, operating as a VCF/A. The DYNMC parameter accepts audio signals or control voltages and converts them into a signal that may increase or decrease the LEVEL parameter thus allowing for Expansion, Compression and Ducking. The summing section is complete with an AUXiliary INput allowing for the chaining of multiple MIX units (modDemix, Optomix and RxMx modules) to create large, non-centralized mixes.

The DYNAMIX is functionally similar to the Optomix LPG: a fundamental element in the sound of West Coast Synthesis, however, rather than using the Vactrol component that gives the Optomix its characteristic "slow" sound, the DYNAMIX circuit utilizes transistors in a topology that has more in common with East Coast instruments. This combination of West Coast technique and East Coast circuitry is No-Coast synthesis at its best, allowing the Low Pass Gate to be used in tandem with an extremely important East-Coast synthesis circuit: the ADSR, a 4-stage Envelope generator we call CONTOUR.

Reverb synth module with size ranges from "coffin" to "the heavens"
Notes: The Erbe-Verb is more than a collection of reverb algorithms or presets, it is a unique, modeless, continuously variable reverb algorithm with complete voltage control.

Typical reverb types such as plate, room, hall, shimmer and others may be programmed by adjusting the knobs. The continuously variable algorithm allows for hybrid and unreal spaces to be found.

Traveling between spaces is possible by modulating the algorithm or manually sweeping parameters. More than an end-of-chain effects unit, it's a whole new building block for modular synthesis. Like the Echophon, it's coded by Tom Erbe of soundhack.

6 band filter synth module with simultaneous 6db/ octave and 12db/ octave inputs, pairs well with the RxMx module
Notes: 6 Band Fixed Filter bank offering simultaneous 6db/ Octave and 12db/ Octave inputs. The 6 filter bands are spaced at roughly 11 to 13 semitones and cover a range of around 6 octaves. The FXDf is useful for isolating a particular portion of the spectrum for mixing and analog or digital signal processing such as ring modulation, amplitude modulation, pitch-shifting and reverberation. The module has a header behind the faceplate allowing for normalled connection of the 6 filter band outputs to the 6 inputs of RxMx allowing for voltage controlled, percussive spectral animation.

In the past the Serge System Fixed Filter used a 6db/ Octave filters while the Moog Modular used 12db/ Octave filters. We liked the sound of both filter slopes, so we implemented a way to use either or both simultaneously. In this way the FXDf also allows for blending of two audio signals. Traditionally fixed filters are large modules having 8 to 10 bands, each with a manual level control, but rarely having any voltage control. The FXDf is so small we had to abbreviate the words Fixed Filter and by providing individual outputs as well as a header for normalled connection to our RxMx 6 channel macro-lowpass-gate module, voltage control over level of each band is possible through patching. We selected the 6 bands we found to produce the most sonic energy in typical Make Noise system patches. We also took care to spaced them wide enough that each of the bands could be distinct from the others. This makes for quite an impactful sound when modulating the amplitude of the 6 bands using the RxMx or VCAs.

Dual Low Pass Gate synthesizer module - 4HP wide
Notes: The LxD, Low Strike Duo, is a dual-response, two channel, direct-coupled, Low Pass Gate, which utilizes vactrols in order to provide simultaneous control over the Amplitude and Frequency Spectrum of an Input Signal.

It is, in essence, a VCFA (Voltage Controlled Filter Amplifier). Unlike the Optomix, the LxD offers two different filter responses. CH. 1 offers a 12db/ Octave response that is mildly-resonant, while CH. 2 offers a 6bd/ Octave that is non-resonant.

The Output of CH. 1 is normalled to the input of CH. 2. This normalization puts the two channels in series, which is similar to the VCF into VCA arrangement made popular by many monosynths of the 1970's.

Multiple signal sending module
Notes: The Multiple is a simple but important module that allows for sending a signal to multiple destinations. Within the Make Noise system the Multiple may also be used for combining clock, gate and pulse signals together to create interesting timing sources (in other words, it acts as a Gate combiner aka logic OR circuit).

It has 9 inter-connected sockets that may be split into different group combinations depending upon how it is patched. The jacks circled in white will make or break the interconnects between the 3 groups of three, thus allowing for three 3-way, one 5-way/ one 3-way or one 7-way multiple.

The Multiple is passive, because the Make Noise system does not require Buffered Multiples since all critical control signals are already buffered in such a way as to provide a large fan-out capability.

Macro-lowpass gate and signal crossfader synth module for smooth dynamic blending and percussive animation of related or unrelated signals
Notes: Vactrol-based 6-input, 3-output macro-lowpass gate and signal crossfader, based on Grant Richter's circuit idea for applying "cadavre exquis" (aka exquisite corpse, a technique of serial blind composition) to modular synthesis. If modulated by a Wogglebug, one will achieve modular "cadavre exquis." If patch programmed using a sequencer such as the Pressure Points/ BRAINS or Rene, modular "melange automatique" (automatic re-mixing) could be achieved.

The Level and Strike parameters are similar to those of the Optomix where Level is controlling amplitude and frequency content simultaneously and Strike triggers the LPG (Low Pass Gate) circuit by "plucking" or "pinging" the vactrol, thus allowing it to impart its magically slow response time upon the amplitude of the signal being processed.

The Channel parameter selects which of the 6 Low Pass Gate circuits is driven by the Level and Strike parameters and the Radiate parameter turns on channels adjacent to the selected channel. At maximum Radiate settings all six channels become active simultaneously. Radiate therefore allows for voltage control of the complexity of the mix ranging from 1 to 6 active sound sources, while Channel selects the focal point of the mix.

Experimental sampler module - record, slice & rearrange audio material
Notes: The Morphagene is a next generation tape and microsound music module that uses Reels, Splices and Genes to create new sounds from those that already exist. Search between the notes to find the unfound sounds.

A few of the Morphagene's most basic uses: Splice recorded audio and jumble it using ORGANIZE. Manipulate playback speed and direction with Vari-Speed. Granularize with Gene-Size and Slide. Layer or Stagger Genes using MORPH. Undertake iterative music processes by recording manipulations and overdubs into new Splices, like having two machines (one for Playback and modulations, one for Record). Process sound in real time using Time Lag Accumulation. Utilize envelope following CV OUT and EOSG Trigger to engage Morphagene in conversation with the rest of your modular system. Stretch and squash sound with Clock input.

Width: 20hp
Max Depth: 30mm
Power: 165mA @ +12V, 20mA @ -12V

***MG137 Firmware Update:

Change Log

1. Improves Vari-Speed response for slow modulation rates.

2. Improves SD Card file format for more compatibility with software .wav file formats.

3. Doubles total record time per Reel.

Upgraded memory performance offers an increase from 1.45 minutes to 2.9 minutes of record time.

If you are using Splices that are over 1 minute long the SLIDE parameter will be scanning across a massive amount of material and therefore the longer the Splice the longer it will take to get to where you are Sliding toward. Imagine a tape machine shuttling forward or backward to get to your desired destination. No we cannot change this, the MG is scanning as fast as possible. This new double record time firmware will make this even more of a factor.

Read and Write times will be MUCH longer when you have a Full 2.9 minute reel. So for example, if you decided to erase a 5 second Splice in the middle of a 2.9 minute reel it will take twice as long as before because the MG must re-write the entire 2.9 minute reel. Of course all of this is happening in the background and should not cause too much hassle. Still when that SHIFT button is flashing it is best to not perform more SD Card actions.

For most granular processing Splices of 10 seconds or less are recommended.

So why even bother increasing record time to 2.9 minutes? Well it allows for storing even more Splices on a Reel and it also makes it possible to record long portions of a patch for later arranging within your DAW. You could potentially capture a patch, including modulations of a shorter Splice (say 10 seconds), retrieve the sound from the SD Card and compile into a larger work using your DAW.

4. Increased max number of Splices to 300.

Multi-Voice, Multi-Algorithm synthesizer module - 14HP wide
Notes: The tELHARMONIC is a Multi-Voice, Multi-Algorithm synthesizer module named for the music hall considered by some to be the location of the first electronic music concerts. It was coded by Tom Erbe with the goal of presenting three historically important pioneering electronic tone generation techniques less often implemented within the modular synthesizer.

The tELHARMONIC's roots go back further than the advent of electronic music, as it also takes a new approach to handling music theory in the modular context. TONIC, INTERVAL, DEGREE and D-GATE, allow for patch-programming of complex chord progressions, scales, melodies and playing styles. This Voltage Controlled Music Theory guides the Algorithms in a unified way, whereas CENTROID, FLUX and H-LOCK sculpt the timbre of each Algorithm uniquely, allowing for complex sounds to be created around a unified melodic structure and pattern.

***FIND THE SPIRATONE INSIDE YOUR TELHARMONIC***

Spiratone:
The Spiratone is a form of Shepard Tone generator. It is a sonic barber pole that creates the auditory illusion of a tone that continually ascends or descends in pitch, yet ultimately seems to get no higher or lower.

It occupies the same space as the tELHARMONIC. To find it, have nothing patched to D-Gate and HOLD H-LOCK for 5 seconds. The sound will dramatically change... you've found the Spiratone inside your tELHARMONIC.
Multi Voice Shepard Tone generator inspired by Jean-Claude Risset "Computer Suite from Little Boy: Fall," 1968 & James Tenney "For Ann (rising)," 1969

CENTROID sets spacing of the oscillators

INTERVAL allows for complete control of modulation depth and direction

FLUX adds random pitch fluctuations

8 octaves of continuous 1V/ Octave pitch control

8 octaves of quantized pitch control

DEGREE Modulation able to be synchronized by clock or gate via D-Gate input

Gate Out completes the conversation between Spiratone and rest of system!

Utilizes High performance DSP hardware with 24bit, 48kHz codec, 32 bit floating point processing

Reasonable power consumption

Pairs well with Optomix

4 channel gate delay module - 8HP
Notes: The Quad Gate Delay is a 4 channel tempo-synced rhythm generator and logic delay. There are 3 switchable time modes: milliseconds, tempo synced (unquantized), and tempo synced (quantized) with additional manual control over each mode as well as CV inputs over channels 1 & 2 (3 & 4 are fixed). The first mode allows for up to 1 second of delay per channel. Tempo synced (unquantized) allows for up to a bar of delay based on the incoming clock. Tempo synced (quantized) mode allows for up to a bar of delay quantized to 1/16 divisions. There are 3 normalling modes. In the first mode all inputs only trigger their own channels. In the second mode the first input will trigger all channels at the same time which allows for multiple taps off a single trigger. The third mode sends the delay output from the current channel into the next channel's input. The mix output combines all 4 channels and sends a short pulse any time one of the outputs goes high.

Dual analog filter eurorack synth module - 16HP wide
Notes: Dual analog filter module:
The Malekko Richter series in Eurorack modular format offers the same great sound, ergonomics, musicality, and quality that made the Wiard 300 series legendary, at a fraction of the cost and size.

The Dual Borg contains one Borg I (left side) and one Borg II (right side). These are two different filters, each with their own character. They do not sound the same nor react the same way to your inputs. The Dual Borg is a versatile audio processor and the concept comes from a marriage of two divergent influences: the Buchla 292 Low Pass Gate and the Korg MS20 filter.

The Borg Filter is different from most filters in that it, at its heart, is a vactrol. Vactrols are combination light sensor/light resistors that possess interesting sonic traits. Often described as "rubbery" or smooth in quality, vactrols are also known for their relatively slow response. This response creates a natural, very musical decay. As a low pass gate (frequency mode), the Borg will act as a filter and a VCA simultaneously. In combination with the characteristic vactrol response, this creates a signature sound that is desired by many synth enthusiasts, especially when used with very short, percussive patches.

But the Borg is no one-trick pony, and low pass gates are not for every patch. When in frequency mode, the Borg is a 12db filter with loads of personality. Gorgeous resonance (influenced by the MS20 and shaped by the vactrol design) swells from subtle warmth to a roaring howl that is unique to the Borg! For entering VCA mode, the new push button VCA switches allow instant changeover between modes- great for performances!

A continuously adjustable low pass to high pass control is provided (a notch filter is a mix of these two). Each filter has one audio input and two CV frequency inputs (one with attenuation). Two separate outputs are provided, and output 2 has a slightly more aggressive resonance. Removing either jumper on the back of the filter will make the resonance "scream" even more! The jumper behind the Borg I effects the Borg I's resonance, and the jumper behind the Borg II changes the Borg II's resonance.

The Borg I (left side) has a slower response and a more mellow sound compared to the Borg II (right side). Thanks to its longer decay time, the Borg I is best for recreating the famous Buchla bongo patch, and the Borg II is best for a faster, more aggressive response.

The signal path of the Dual Borg is selectable: Series or Parallel.
- In Series mode, when you plug into either in 1 or in 2, or even both inputs (as a mix), the signal is routed through the Borg I then Borg II filters and both out 1 or out 2 have the same signal. If you are connected to both outputs, you will only get signal from out 2.
- In Parallel mode, a single input into in 1 or in 2 is routed through both filters side by side, and a single output (either out 1 or out 2) will give you a mix of both filters. If you have only one input but two outputs, out 1 is the Borg I filter only and out 2 is Borg II only. If you have two inputs and two outputs, then each filter is completely separate: in 1 and out 1 is Borg I, in 2 and out 2 is Borg II. To use only one filter, you must patch into both outputs then choose which filter's output you want to hear.

Control voltage processor synth module - 4HP wide
Notes: The perfect buddy for any filter, oscillator, quantizer or VCA... in fact it the perfect buddy for anything you want to modulate.

You can dial in your modulation exactly how you want it with:

Level - Attenuverter, positive attenuator or inverted attenuator.
Offset - Add a stable DC offset (positive or negative) to make sure the modulation is in exactly the range you need it.
Glide - Slew your signal to smooth it out for filter response or portamento.

Works great with 1v/oct sources. The through (->) output is a buffered multiple so you can take your sequencers output and use this module to add a interval on a second oscillator.

Discrete SVF with Moog CP3 mixer module - 14HP wide
Notes: Comments from the creator:
"It started life as the SVF design (based on the J. Haible discrete 2040 gain cell) which Scott Stites posted over at electro-music in April. I'd been wanting to work with another filter for a while and this one looked interesting, so I started playing with it. I lopped off the audio input section and grafted on the CP3 mixer (moar transistors!) and that's what you're hearing in this rather short clip. It's definitely interesting! A very thick, rich-sounding filter with a lot of different personalities depending on how hard you drive the inputs."

Discrete transistor mixer synth module
Notes: The DTM is a discrete transistor circuit core mixer with 3 inputs and 1 output, based on the vintage Moog CP3. Very similar in features to Manhattan Analog's other mixer, the DTM instead is known for its interesting clipping behavior.

The module is equipped with threee inputs and each of them has a level control. The fourth potentiometer O is an offset potentiometer, which generates an offset voltage at the output.
Approximately at 13h-position of the input level potentiometer the channel will start to clip and adds a very transistor-specific sound coloration by saturation.

The module is not limited to mixing and saturating audio signals as you might as well shape control voltgages e.g. altering the shape of an envelope or a LFO and the offest control is very handy for CVs as well.

Clean, high quality audio mixing synth module - 4HP wide
Notes: The Mix is designed primarily for clean, high-quality audio mixing. it is fully dc-coupled so that it retains utility as a cv mixer when necessary. i also put the jacks at the bottom so that it retains tweakability even when fully-patched.

Under the hood it's a unity-gain op amp mixer, with three unipolar inputs and an output which can be switched between uni- and bi-polar operation using a jumper on the board. the inputs use audio-taper pots while the output is linear to facilitate both modes of operation. care has been taken in the selection of the op amps used to ensure low noise, no signal bleed, and as little added 'color' as possible.

Multi-function manual vontage processor synth module with attenuverter/offset, mixer & mutliples functions - 16HP wide
Notes: The manual voltage processor (MVP) is a multi-function module with several vital "basic-utility" functions all packed onto one panel. this module is an ideal one-stop solution for manually mixing, scaling, inverting, distributing and offsetting audio and/or control voltage signals.

This module consists of three basic sections: first is the attenuverter/offset section at the top. each of the 3 independent attenuators is bipolar and will output a static +/-5v dc voltage (offset) with nothing plugged into its input jack. the corresponding led will indicate your signal's strength and polarity. (red = positive.)

Second is the mixer section in the middle. it's set up as a basic unipolar 4-input unity-gain mixer. the sum of channels 1 & 2 can be removed from the main output by inserting a cable into the jack labelled "1+2", allowing you to use this section as two independent 2-input mixers. the output jacks are marked with black square surrounds. this mixer is designed to handle primarily audio and uses the same op-amps as the mix. it'll handle CVS quite happily, but the inputs aren't matched and you may not get good results with critical signals such as pitch cv.

Finally there is the multiples section across the bottom. on the left are two 1->2 buffered multiples and on the right are two 1->3 passive multiples. the input jack for each section is marked with a black circular surround. the arrows on the panel indicate internal connections between sections. with only buffered input a in use you can distribute a signal to as many as 10 different destinations.

Like all Manhattan Analog modules, the MVP is entirely hand-built using panel-mounted metal-shaft pots and is fully protected from reverse-power accidents.

Officially licensed reissue of the original Synthasystem filter - 14HP
Notes: The Steiner Synthasystem VCF is a multimode filter with powerful, clearly analog sound. It features high-pass, low-pass and an exceptionally crisp bandpass mode. The input level is adjustable. The cutoff potentiometer means business. For modulations, there are two CV inputs with attenuators. High resonance values result in wet to sharp and aggressive sound. A very versatile filter!

The audio input of the Steiner Synthasystem VCF is followed by a level control. Via a switch, users can choose the module's high-pass, band-pass or low-pass mode. Two large, very handy potentiometers allow users to comfortably adjust cutoff and resonance. For cutoff modulations, two CV inputs plus attenuators were implemented. Thanks to two outputs, filtered audio material can be sent to several other circuits in parallel.

MIDI to CV interface - controls up to 4 CV synthesizers individually or as a polysynth - 32HP
Notes: Polygene is a Eurorack polyphonic MIDI to CV converter with 4 voice outputs that can be used to play your CV synths/modules as a 4 voice polysynth.

Simple to use, it's the perfect way to have MIDI control over 4 CV synths, to play together as one poly synth.

Connect to 4 mono synths, e.g. Analogue Solutions Nyborg, or connect to Eurorack modules set up as 4 synth voices.

The Arpeggiator has no nonsense operation harking back to the days of early Roland synths such as the Jupiter 8 and SH101. The Arpeggiator can also be used as a simple 16 note step sequencer, and also plays back the velocity amount that was used. The Arpeggiator will control CV synths, but the note info is also sent to the MIDI Out socket as MIDI notes, so you can have it play a MIDI synth.
