  1. Living In Harmony (feat Lo Carter) (4:19)
  2. Living In Harmony (instrumental remix) (4:15)
Review: Powerful new soul from the exciting new collective at Gemco in Little Five Points, Atlanta; Diamond Street Rhythm Machine provide dreamy, slick vibrations with a tight groove and fluttering melodic motifs with its flute, brass and blissful keys. It's powerful enough for an instrumental but it's also subtle enough to carry Lo Carter's incredible vocals on the A-side. Gutsy old soul with raw emotion, Lo makes the gem in Gemco truly shine.

Review: Their last single was "Won't Be Coming Back", now comes "Sure Don't Miss You": We're noticing a theme here... And to be honest, we can't thank whichever ex-lover it was who upset this Seattle seven piece enough. Because we are getting some serious soul gold right here! Once again on Colemine, once again rich in harmony, once again with the big instrumentation and enough spring in the guitars and horns for big dance moves; The Dip are fast establishing themselves as a serious player in contemporary funk and they've even thrown in an instrumental to show how tight they are.

  1. Cards On The Table (2:44)
  2. Don't Ever Go (2:42)
Review: Destination Loveland for another deep dig from Colemine's Remined project. Washington soul troupe The Diplomats later went on to become Skull Snaps whose "A New Day" track gave the world one of the finest breaks ever to run through an MPC. Here we find their first ever a-side (which sells for triple figures on the regs) and it's backed with "Don't Ever Go", a big swooning, crooning bluesy ballad that's never been released before. Both stun you down to the very soul. Diplomatic immunity? No chance.

  1. We Need Love (3:47)
  2. I Want To Be Your Special Man (4:23)
Review: Ultra Vybe remain deep in their Brunswick excavations with these two sublime cuts from the label's super troupe of session players Directions and their one and only album. Released 1976, OG copies fetch almost L200 and just these two tracks alone hint at why. Shimmering with a strong Faze-O feel with an evocative contrast of falsetto and deep baritone and twinkling instrumentation, both tracks swoon with everything that was so smooth and emotional about the label who gave the world Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites and Gene Chandler. Show some love.

  1. The Disciples - "In Loving Memory" (3:03)
  2. All Nations Quartet - "He Spoke" (3:02)
Review: Serial alias addict, Kris Holmes returns with a double side of split personality: The Disciples is a rough, bluesy layered piece of slo-mo surf rock where the drums only just keep up and the organs provide heavy soul salvation. "He Spoke" shows Kris on much more of an African inspired trip. Similarly hefty organs power the main groove but there's more uplift in the riff and instrumentation. Insatiable.

  2. Don't Let Yourself Get Carried Away (2:41)
Review: Athens Of The North triumph once again with two incredible slices of crossover, feel good soul from the early 70s. Douglas & Lonero enjoyed a good vein of major form on Columbia for a while, including a live album Live At Charley Brown's, but this 1975-released RCA 45 has been the most collectable (with OG copies of the double-sided pressing fetching over 500 pounds sterling in the past) Fully remastered from the original tapes, this is the clearest, sharpest and sweatiest Douglas & Lonero have ever sounded.

  1. You Made Me A Believer (3:56)
  2. Starting Over (4:36)
Review: It would be fair to say that the two tracks showcased here aren't among Lamont Dozier's best-known songs. For starters, they were originally tucked away on the legendary soul man's largely overlooked 1981 set, Working On You. A-side "I'm A Believer" is a breezy, string-drenched chunk of disco-boogie blessed with one of the singer-songwriter's best vocal performances. It's something of an overlooked dancefloor gem, all told. Flipside "Starting Over" builds steadily from a slow start, with Dozier's impassioned message of love reborn coming through loud and clear over sumptuous orchestration and super-sweet vocal harmonies.

Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.

Review: Soul auteur Jonathan Diggs Duke returns to one of his older EPs for a timely reissue. Originally released in 2015, just after his critically acclaimed debut album on Giles Peterson's Brownswood, the three tracks catch Diggs at his most flighty and free-thinking; "Ambition Addiction" jumps and rolls like a tightly coiled jazz spring before hurling us into the deep harmonic soulful blue of "Welcome" and "Funky Overdose" lives up to its name with its off beat magic, tightly plucked guitar and staccato vocals. Addictive.

  1. Woman Of The Ghetto (3:40)
  2. Woman Of The Ghetto (instrumental) (3:11)
Review: When you hear people talk about 'boogie', it's largely thanks to the music that resides on the catalogue of the SAM label, some to some of the most blazing electro-disco bangers from the '80s. Standing undisputed as one of the founding labels for the genre, Doris Duke's cover of Marlena Shaw's "Woman Of The Ghetto" is the perfect balance between soul and something else, something murkier, deeper, with a more electronic edge. Both the vocal and the instrumental cuts are serious weapons for any dance floor, and although they might be relatively slower compared to other SAM joints, they're still as sexy as hell...

  2. Nonstop To The Top (5:58)
Review: There's no doubt that crate-digger, record collector and renowned Discogs seller Zafsmusic knows more than most about the world of private press vinyl releases. This 12", originally pressed up in super-limited quantities by its' creator, Martin L Dumas Jnr sometime around the turn of the '80s, has long been a must-have for collectors with several thousand dollars to spare. The title track is particularly wonderful - a warm, breezy, loose and fluid chunk of boogie-soul that Zaf has slightly tweaked to suit the needs of modern dancefloors. Flipside "Nonstop To The Top" has a more jazz-funk feel, with intergalactic synths complimenting Dumas Jr's sweet vocal and conscious lyrics.

  1. Brazilian Rhyme (Danny Krivit re-edit) (3:00)
  2. Runnin' (Danny Krivit re-edit) (8:18)
Review: Danny Krivit's officially sanctioned re-edits of Earth Wind & Fire's "Brazilian Rhyme" and "Runnin" have been sought-after since they first appeared on a Japan-only 12" back in 2004. In fact, such is demand that even later bootleg pressings now go for silly money online. As this reissue proves, though, they're arguably amongst Krivit's strongest scalpel works. Certainly, his three-minute revision of the always too short "Brazilian Rhyme" teases it out to just the right length, in the process delivering a sweltering, sing-along summer anthem. The flipside revision of the equally as summery "Runnin" is every bit as good, with Krivit making merry with the original's life-affirming scat vocals and killer piano solos.

  1. Forever (4:14)
  2. Love Has Never Passed Me By (3:30)
Review: SOL Discos present their third reissue with these two songs from Frank Eddie. Originally released on the by Eddie himself, most of the original 1000 pressed copies where abandoned back in South Miami, Florida. Influenced by soul and rock, Frank met with drummer and singer William Hopkins. They created a band together, which at the time, would also jam with people that would later become famous such as Steve Morse (Deep Purple), jazz steel-band player Othello Molineaux and Jaco Pastorius to name a few. Frank & William co-wrote the two songs on this record. They gathered the personnel and recorded it in four days. After unsuccessful meetings with major labels and partly discouraged by the music business, Frank decided to self-release the record on his Insync label. He worked on his own to sell it locally but sadly it didn't meet the audience it deserved. According to William, "The black radio stations would not play it because I did not give them cocaine or money, and the disco clubs had their own list to promote". Today, Frank Eddie is still active by playing American Rhythm & Blues and Jazz in Cuba, as well as supporting the Cuban musicians, bringing instruments to the Caribbean Nation.

  1. I Can Deal With That (3:23)
  2. I Can Deal With That (Strings version) (3:33)
Review: Straight form the heart of London via the mind of Detroit, the ever-consistent Soul Brother crew have laid down another stellar reissue here through Dee Edwards' gorgeous "(I Can) Deal With That". Originally out on the much-coveted De-To label in 1977, the original mix is a delicate, whaling soul monster that'll melt your heart from its first guitar riff - Edwards' voice is truly magnetic over the slow-burning percussion. There's a more stripped-down 'Strings' version to act as the cherry on the cake - you just gotta.

First up GZA's "Shadow Boxing" gets a hazy Booker T-style shakedown with those dreamy hammonds breezing through like top-down caddies. Review: Longstanding New York troupe El Michels Affair bite down on 2017 with two on-point left-sided soul jams. "Tearz" is a biggie, not least because it features Lee Fields and The Shacks. A warm, organ groove with loose breaks and drops into pure harmonic bliss, it's another spellbinding affair from the Wu-approved crew. "Verbal Intercourse" takes more of a slinkier, subtle approach with clipped horns spitting an insistent hook over sparse, twanging instrumental elements. Stunning, as always.

  2. Zaharila (3:43)
Review: Leon Michel's El Michels Affair has always grabbed our attention, since the very early days of the Juno website, back in the early 00s. The New York outfit, an instrumental collective that seems to change every decade, have been experimenting with jazz and all sorts of ethereal styles from across the globe. This new single, out through the trusted Big Crown label, is perhaps one of their most memorable outings of the last 5 years. The title track, "Unathi", is a mystical voyage across time and space, with psyched-out vocals riding high above a solid trip-hop groove and a marvelous array of trippy atmospherics. On the flip, "Zaharila" is a slower, moodier piece that speaks to the heart, spewing horns and tough beats from every angle, making it instantly recognizable and, yes, as seductive as most of El Michels Affair's music. Excellent.

Review: Deep into his chamber-lurking follow-up Wu odyssey, Leon Michels stumbled upon shy New York twosome The Shacks and convinced them to record this hazy summer-primed 45". Singer Shannon steals the show with softness and honesty as the band weave a psychedelic bed of sliding guitars and faraway harmonies. Both laced with a woozy 60s edge and beautifully playful lyrics, the whole EP sparkles with soul and talent from both The Shacks and Leon's ever-reliable troupe.

Review: Astonishingly, original copies of Energize's 1979 private press single "Piece of Class" have changed hands for over 500 quid online. Helpfully, Rain & Shine have decided to save us all a few bob by slinging out this licensed reissue. The title track is something of a bustling disco-funk gem - a genuinely wonderful fusion of hazy vocals, dueling horn solos, spacey synthesizer flourishes and driving bass guitar. B-side "Star of the Disco" is an even more up-tempo affair, with mazy saxophone solos, rasping horn stabs and starry jazz-funk keys riding a walking bassline and high-octane disco drums.

The label have done a great job in continuously finding new, raw talent in the soul game, and these dudes know the score. "If You Break It" features the voice of Vincent Bonham, and it's a veritable lovers tune, made for dance floor antics and Saturday night romance, whereas "Other Side Of The Mirror" is more of a soulful abstraction, a gorgeous little ballad led by the delicate, majestic vocals of Arnell Carmichael. Review: Excavated from the personal collection of one Lamont Dozier, little is known about The Fabulous Dynamics besides the sounds found on a one-off acetate six-track demo record. Here are two Big Crown's favourites from the demo; the stripped back, vocal-heavy swoons and harmonies of "Get Hip To Yourself" and the pedigree balled "Every Time I See A Pretty Girl". Raw, honest, and full of promise, this is a pure snapshot of 60s soul, discovered in the collection of one of the most influential songwriters of the time. What a document.

Review: One of Wilson Pickett's earlier bands, The Falcons unwittingly laid down a Northern Soul anthem in 1960 with "Good Good Feeling". Stomping drums, big horns and massive harmonies, it's still as sweaty and boisterous as it was 55 years ago. Flip for an interesting 1990 take on one of their most famous cuts "Standing On Guard". Subtle with the synths with full focus on the vocals, however many reincarnations the band has experienced in the 25 years that passed. Good feelings all round.
