Review: French progenitors of the dance Paris Acid City keep the spark of French (disco-) house alive with their latest EP 'PA City Two'. A label / moniker seemingly dedicated to capturing the bustle and excitement of 80s-90s Paris, bottling it in disco-house music form, the likes of 'Falling Planet Earth' are glamorous ear-grabbers, the equivalent of bowling down a high-fashion Boulevard with a wad of cash in hand. Then comes a tribal detour on 'Hupendi Muziki Wangu' before we land touch down g-funky, P-Funky Los Angeles on '212 North 12th'.

Review: The Record Store Day releases are coming thick and fast already and Dynamite Cuts have got one of the more essential ones here. It features a pair of tracks from Steve Parks, who looks as cool as can be on the much loved cover. This is the first time the lead single has ever been put on its own 7" after first coming on his 1981 album. That is now mega-rare and a high value collector's item and surely this one will be too, soon enough. The mastering is high class, allowing the free flowing jazz funk goodness to really shine. On the reverse is a more intimate late-night romancer. What a pair of tunes.

Review: The Acid Jazz label opens it archives to turn out this magnificent slice of northern soul from the legend that is Dean Parrish, a man who sold over a million records and worked with the likes of Jimi Hendrix. It's 10 years old but still bangs and is maybe one of the best records of his career. The psychedelic 'It's Time - Purple Mountain Majesty' is a hard hitting tune with layers of percussion, amour nines, bendy guitar riffs and soaring vocals that have female backings for extra richness. The version on the flip is more tense, steamy and rousing.

Review: Theo Parrish teams up with Maurissa Rose again on a rare if not completely unprecedented outing that is pure soul magic rather than the dancefloor spells Parrish normally casts. It's a quite the classy outing, as Rose goes full pelt over tinkling percussion and hip-hop beats, showing that every inch of her reputation is totally deserved. Fans of the pair's previous single, 'This Is For You', will find this more coneventional in a 70s classic soul way, but even more spectactular.

Review: DC's Rouser label was a rather short lived imprint but the three acclaimed singes it released were incredibly spacial. Arguably the best of the trio was from The Past - Present, And The Future who expertly moved between beautiful and ghostly sounds. Their work demonstrating a timeless understanding of love and longing and always came steeped in plenty of emotion. The two tunes here on this fresh 7" showcase that in heart rending fashion. 'If I Could Live For Eternity' in particular is an indelible sounding song.

Review: Six Nine Records welcomes honey-voiced soul man Terrill Paul to the label for the first time, via a two-track 45 written and produced by the prolific Stone Paxton. The cut for dancefloor plays is undoubtedly A-side 'This Time', a pleasingly nostalgic nod to turn of the 80s disco-soul whose grooves, lyrics and instrumentation recall the celebratory brilliance of Earth, Wind and Fire. Just like that band's best moments, 'This Time' boasts a superb lead vocal and a genuinely catchy chorus. Over on the flip, 'Heaven Sent' is a delightfully loved-up slow jam that blurs the boundaries between contemporary soul, r&b and glossy mid-80s productions.

Pause was an early act who excelled at the form as two incredibly rare and hard to find tunes that are both being pressed up bony Freestyle this month prove. The first one comes on this 12" in the form of 'It's Just Amazing' with various different mixes. The vocal mix pairs lo-fi drum breaks with shards of 80s synth stabs and a gorgeous vocal harmony finished perfectly by a melancholic bassline. The two instrumental mixes are even more dusty and lo-fi but the vocal version is the one that will always stand out and get the floor in a tizzy.

It was recorded din 1969 and features a golden production touch that made it a hugely popular tune for sample-hunting producers in the hip hop world. Review: This special Record Stay Day reissue gathers together two of Philadelphia soul legend Teddy Pendergrass' finest dancefloor moments. Both are essential, making this a must-buy for disco DJs who've yet to acquire them. On the A-side you'll find "You Can't Hide From Yourself", a sumptuously orchestrated affair whose killer groove is matched in quality by Pendergrass' impassioned vocal (check the rasping freestyle vocalizations towards the end for proof). Equally as impressive is "The More I Get, The More I Want", an insatiably sexually charged affair that builds in intensity throughout and not only contains one of the funkiest basslines in disco history, but also some seriously addictive female backing vocals.

Review: Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes lead singer Teddy Pendergrass is one of soul music's most underrated artists if you ask us - and he has a remarkable story that rather took a tragic turn later in life and is well worth reading about. Here a couple of his golden gems get reworked by Mike Maurro for the Brookside label. First up is the gentle soul and lavish arrangement of the deep rolling 'Close The Door'. On the B-side you will find 'Only You', a more upbeat dancefloor heater with fat and plump drums and disco energy topped with Teddy's buttery vocals.

Review: Trailer Limon and E Da Boss (he of Myron & E fame) have been recording as The Pendletons for the best part of a decade, serving up occasional slices of revivalist electrofunk and turn-of-the-'80s soul. They're at it again here, popping up on Bastard Jazz with a double dose of goodness made with the assistance of some of the Bay Area's finest musicians. The headline attraction is undoubtedly the Howard Johnson hook-up "You Do You", a rich and evocative chunk of mid-tempo disco-soul blessed with mix-friendly drum breaks, seductive instrumentation (think glistening funk guitars, toasty bass, punchy horns and fluid pianos) and a slick, smooth lead vocal. "Life To Me", a more sugary affair built around distinctive slap bass, sustained chords, relaxed drums and subtle synth flourishes, is similarly impressive.

Review: Way back in 1970, People In The News released their sole single on Knap Town, a tiny label based in Indiana. Original copies of that funk "45" are notoriously hard to find, thanks in no small part to the quality of both cuts. Step forward Athens Of The North boss Euan Fryer, who has secured the rights to reissue the single for the first time. A-side "Color Me" is the real bomb: a down-low chunk of mid-tempo funk with politically charged group vocals, rasping guitar licks and hip-hop style drum breaks. Over on side B, "Misty Shade Of Pink" is the kind of rock solid instrumental funk workout you'd expect to hear from the Meters.

Review: Vocal trio The Petersons hailed from Waycross and took their name from Kenneth Peterson, the band leader, founder, drummer and vocalist who worked with keys man Salem Chatman and vocalist and bassist Johnny Members. They performed all up and down the East Coast of America and answered an advert they saw in Philadelphia in 1973 which led them to sign for Omega Sound, a small independent recording company formed by Frank Fioravanti. They recorded the tunes presented here but didn't make much noise at the time, though listening back now it's hard to see why.

Review: It's five up for the Palmetto Street label and this one finds them turning to Ben Pirani & The Means Of Production who manage to again find new ground in this great EP. The lead single from the 7" is a soft and melancholic sad song with none other than Brian Jackson (who collaborated with Gil Scott Heron) playing the flute parts. He cuts through the smokey mood with daring harmonies while on the flip things get even more forceful with 'Something So Precious'. Pirani goes it alone on the vocals for this one while a strong quartert adds the sumptuous melodies.

Review: Numero Group reinvigorate our interest in Ponderosa Twins Plus One, an American vocal soul group who first formed in 1970 in Cleveland, Ohio. A reissue of two early greats by the band, 'Bound' is an undeniable ode to what it means to be "married", being the high-registered soulful ballad about love that was popularly sampled by Kanye West in his 2013 song 'Bound 2', as well as by Tyler, the Creator in his 2019 song 'A Boy Is a Gun'. The vocals are so high as to sound whistly, proving the incredible range of the band. The B-side is 'I Remember You', a comparatively romantic number with even more harmonies contained therein.

Review: American soul vocal group Pondersosa Twins Plus One was a group that had a huge impact on pop music, even though they didn't know it when they first started out. Their first official American 45rpm came in 1971 and this is a first ever official reissue of it from the good folks at Numero Group. Up first is the yearning 'Bound' with a lead vocal that returns the Jackson 5-era voice of Michael Jackson. On the flip is the equally enthralling and impassioned soul and funk of 'I Remember You.' Review: Brewerytown Beats have got a real gem on their hands here, and one that lovers of rare and high quality funk will be falling over themselves for. Power of Attorney was a rehabilitative project of Theodore "Ted" Wing, activities director at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution, who opened a studio in the prison for inmates to get creative. They originally released this one for Nicetown in 1973 - only 500 were pressed and sold direct from prison - and even Discogs hasn't got any recent sales records for it. The high speed jailbird funk of 'Changing Man' is a tale of redemption and is backed with the achingly soulful 'I'm Just Your Clown'.
