  1. Always There (3:51)
  2. Comin' Over Me (3:47)
Review: Destination 78/79: Expansion take us deep into the illustrious back cat of revered boogaloo fusionist Willie Bobo for two of his many fiery delights. Side A is his feel-heavy cult instrumental take on Ronnie Laws' disco classic "Always There" while Side B throws us into the heart of his 1979 album Bobo with gutsy raw soul power (and just a few cheeky funk slap bass twangs for good measure) Two stone cold classics together for the first time on 45.

Wanna Be Editin' Somethin' (7" repress) (1 per customer)
Cat: SWR 012. Rel: 04 Sep 18
  1. Wanna Be Editin' Somethin' (4:19)
  2. Give Me The Remix (4:16)
Review: Jorun Bombay has form for breathing new life into Jackson family favourites, having previously released a fine 7" featuring a stellar revision of "It's Great To Be Here". This time he tackles a solo MJ cut, lacing the vocal and horns from "Soul Makossa"-inspired single "Got To Be Startin' Something" over a bustling, bass-heavy groove previously featured on one of the most famous hip-hop cuts of all time. Arguably even better is flipside "Give Me The Remix", a brilliant, 1980s 12" dub style revision of another Q Jones production. It's pleasingly stripped-down, making use of the original's killer synth bassline, jazz guitars and sing-along vocals, whilst jettisoning much of the musical filler. Top stuff, all told.

  2. Check 4 U (Metrodome UK Gee mix) (5:16)
Review: Seminal Manchester street soul from 96; Bovel's "Check 4 U" had anthem status in clubs and on pirates throughout the city at the time but suffered limited pressing and an OG copy has been known to be priced at L2000. Revitalised by Ruf Dug and Bovel herself, it now comes complete with a superb UKG update from Metrodome which maintains the feel of the era but with the pace and punch of the times. Limited to 1000 copies.

  1. I Like What You Do To Me (3:27)
  2. Girl Like You (4:19)
Review: The second 45" of unreleased material from Lafayette Afro Rock Band member, highly talented and criminally overlooked instrumentalist and singer Bobby Boyd; both tracks show how relevant and ahead of the music he was deep into the 80s; "I Like What You Do To Me" is a synth boogie jam with both feet planted firmly on the dancefloor while "Girl Like You" is unabashed proto house with a great drive and strutting sense of soul. While it's amazing Athens Of The North are working with Boyd to release his music now, it's a shame these never saw the light of day when he wrote them 30 years ago.

  1. Where Will I Go (4:09)
  2. Always (4:34)
Review: North Carolina's Brief Encounter were one of the bands to define the 70's US soul sound but, unlike many of their peers, the group remained in the sights of crate diggers and specialists, straying away from significant commercial success. This particular single, for instance, wasn't even released officially and has remained the stuff of legends until now, so it's thanks to the reliable Athens Of The North that we're able to give it a spin on our turntables. Put simply, "Where Will I Go" and "Always" are two unmissable soul ballads that are simply impossible not to appreciate and get excited by - they encapsulate a particular note of optimism and romance that represented the 1970s in America, taking us on a journey into the past. Don't miss it!

  1. Love Stormy Weather (4:09)
  2. Crying For Your Love (4:02)
Review: Soul collectors have long considered Melvin Brown and James Matthews' "Love Stormy Weather" to be a slept-on classic. Initially released (and largely ignored) in 1976, it sits somewhere between the acoustic soul of Terry Callier, the dewy-eyed goodness of Rotary Connection, and the sumptuous jazz-funk that was all the rage in the late 1970s. Don't take our word for it, though: check out the sound clips for yourself. On the flipside you'll find a previously unheard gem from the duo: the impassioned, tear-jerking torch song "Crying For Your Love". Naturally it's a little fuzzy round the edges (the masters were probably sat in someone's loft for 30-odd years), but still sounds powerful and emotional.

  2. You Don't Deserve (3:03)
Review: A serious self-press rarity from the heart of Clarksville, Suggs never achieved the recognition he deserved during his tenure as a band leading soul man. Still in Clarksville and now a missionary, the sentiments of this recording history peak resonate with what he does now: "Everything That Looks Good" is a JB style message on the lure of temptation while "You Don't Deserve", an instrumental that sees Bubba switching his vocals for equally commanding sax, is a moment for poignant, soul-searching reflection. Lord have mercy.

  2. Beggin' (2:56)
Review: Swedish superstar Magnus Carlson prepares us for his next album From Now On. His first English sung album since his work with the Moon Ray Quintet, this pokey little "45 gives us a strong flavour of what's to come. "The Long Way Home" is all about the big soul vibes with surging vocals and a tight driving groove while "Beggin'" is a fantastic cover of Frankie Vallie that blows his Swedish version from 2003 completely out of the water.

  2. What's On Your Mind (5:45)
  3. Give It Up (4:06)
  4. Was That All It Was (7:32)
Review: The latest missive from re-born Washington D.C label Al & The Kidd Records should excite those who love the classic Philadelphia International sound. It features previously unheard instrumental versions of all four tracks from the B-side of Jean Carn's Dexter Wansel-produced full-length When I Find You Love. In some ways, it's testament to the quality of Wansel's production and the musicians involved that all four cuts still sparkle without her headline vocals. This is particularly notable on synth-sporting dancefloor bumper "What's On Your Mind", where the rubbery bassline, sharp orchestration and Wanzel's spacey synths take centre stage, and "Lonely Girl In a Cold Cold World", which features some superb, eyes-closed guitar solos.

  1. Without Christ (4:40)
  2. Without Christ (instrumental) (3:01)
Review: Calvin Carr's wonderful gospel-soul has been a digger's favourite for yonks, often being cited and used by the very best selectors in the game. This 1878 single, originally out on Philadelphia United Records, is aptly named "Without Christ" and it offers listeners, dancers and lovers an opportunity for positive redemption. Much like the rest of the gospel world, this is perhaps the best way to convert people into enlightenment and keep them positive - there is absolutely no way that this disco-tinged gem cannot make you jump up with joy and excitement. The instrumental cut is pretty killer, too. BIG.

  1. Know It All (3:20)
  2. Know It All (version) (3:24)
Review: Although he built his reputation as party-starting DJ, Mister Saturday Night co-founder Justin Carter has always been a singer-songwriter at heart. This debut solo release sees him delivering evocative, folksy vocals over plucked acoustic guitar lines and ghostly backing vocals. The song's fragile, slightly woozy nature comes to the fore on the flipside "Version" mix, which only emphasizes the weary beauty of Carter's lyrics and vocal performance. It's a bit of a sideways step for Mister Saturday Night, but then the label has never played by the rules.

  2. The Dynamics - "My Life Is No Better"
Review: Two Larry Banks produced soul gems from the 60s... Kenny Carter's "You'd Better Get Hip Girl" is straight out of the Motown playbook; raw emotions, rich harmonies and superb orchestration it's a ballad of the highest order. "My Life Is No Better" carries the same lamented sentiment but delivers it in a much more uptempo fashion a la Delfonics. Powerful.

  1. Peter In Or Out (2:31)
  2. Let's Run Away From The World (3:15)
Review: Tramp Records has a good relationship with obscure Illinois soul man Wayne Carter. Back in 2013 they put out a compilation of his near impossible-to-find singles and here reissue arguably his most rare and sought-after 45 (for proof, check how much original private press copies change hands for online). With its meandering Hammond organ solos, heavyweight rhythm section, fuzzy horns and impassioned vocals, "Peter In Or Out" is a genuine deep funk bomb. On the flip you'll find the more laidback and groovy "Let's Run Away From The World", in which backing band the Organ Twisters provide a fitting backing for Carter's impassioned plea to a lover to "at last be free".

  2. Bless The Day (5:09)
Review: Sun-kissed soul from 1975, not a lot is known about the Charisma Band besides their powerful musical abilities and their two 45s on Buddah and Columbia. "Ain't Nothing Like Your Love" is a horn-blessed feel-good summer get-together while "Bless The Day" takes us straight to the bedroom with its gliding guitars, velvet falsetto and spellbinding harp. It's not hard to see why originals of this have been known to pass hands for several hundred bob.

  1. Don't You Care (2:47)
  2. Never Did I Stop Loving You (2:32)
Review: Two powerful soul sessions from Alice Clark's eponymous debut 1972 album. "Don't You Care" is a hard-hitting soul standard (that became very popular in acid jazz scene in the early 90s) where Alice opens her heart for all to see while her incredible band ebb and flow with Clark's emotions. "Never Did I Stop Loving You", meanwhile, languishes in sentiment at a slightly lower tempo that allows her to really dig deep for those low notes. The real fun happens as we reach momentum towards the end and every band member brings out their A-game and bounces off each other - backing up Alice every step of the way. You will care about this.

  1. Love With A Stranger (5:04)
  2. Dub With A Stranger (4:24)
Review: Rick Clarke's smooth 1985 cut "Love With a Stranger" has long been considered one of the unheralded British soul gems of the mid 1980s. Unlike many similar records from that period, it's aged impeccably well, sounding every bit as magical now as it did when it first appeared in stores way back in 1995. That's testament to John Collins' unheralded production, of course - all unfussy slo-mo drum machine beats, ear-catching synth bass and chiming '80s soul melodies - but also the endearing quality of Clarke's superb, reggae influenced lead vocal. Like the original 12", this timely reissue pairs the brilliant original version with the slightly more spaced-out and instrumental Dub.

  1. Nothin' Left 2 Do (4:39)
  2. Didn't We Almost Make It (4:53)
Review: What a crazy trip it's been for The Coalitions. After a run of success in the mid 70s and an album that was produced but never released in the early 80s, the Philly band finally got the justice they deserved in 2011 as Soul Junction unearthed their work and finally released their album 30 years later. Now the band are back with a brand new song. "Nothin' Left 2 Do" is rooted in classic Al Green style soul but with big flourishes of 80s instrumentation and even 90s R&B vocal croons. "Didn't We Almost Make It" takes us back to 1979 as their instantly distinctive album opener enjoys life on 45 for the very first time. They made it.

  1. Cobblestone - "Trick Me, Treat Me" (2:27)
  2. The Moods - "Rainmaker" (2:51)
Review: There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing on Outta Sight's latest deep dive into the world of rare funk and soul. On the A-side you'll find Cobblestone's "Trick Me Treat Me", a fiendishly hard to find 1970 stomper that has long been an in-demand record amongst Northern Soul collectors. On the flipside you'll find the arguably even more impressive "Rainmaker" by The Moods, a kind of proto-disco, Motown-goes-to-Philadelphia anthem from 1970 full of impassioned vocals, swirling orchestration and a groove that just makes you want to dance. Since an original 7" could set you back 50 quid (or so), this re-issue should be an essential purchase for anyone with soul in their veins.
