Get Down (7")
Cat: SG 049. Rel: 31 Oct 17
  1. Get Down (4:56)
  2. Double Decker (3:59)
Review: Long-serving Japanese band QASB tend to have two musical modes. Their releases are either sweet and soulful or funky and fulsome. This 7" definitely sits in the latter category. A-side "Get Down" is a cheery, up-tempo workout full of rising orchestration, bouncy disco-funk grooves, jazz-funk flourishes and a vocal from A Yu Mi urging us to shake our stuff on the floor. The party continues on the mostly instrumental flipside "Double Decker", a sumptuous, all-action affair full of sparring instrument solos, sweaty disco drum breaks and dreamy freestyle vocal improvisations. It reminded us a little of Pleasure's "Joyous", which is no bad thing.

  1. Thinking Of You (4:17)
  2. Thinking Of You (feat Hiro-A-Key) (4:16)
Review: Having been a feature of Japan's revivalist funk scene since the mid-2000s, Q.A.S.B should be a familiar name to those who dig for dinked soul sevens. "Thinking of You" is their first single of 2017 and arrives a couple of months before the due date of the Q.A.S.B IV full-length. The title track, which resides on side A, is a superb piece of relaxed, summertime soul that increases in heaviness towards a sweltering, funk-fuelled conclusion. Turn to the flip for an alternative version in which male vocalist Hiro-A-Key joins the band's regular female singer to turn the track into a super-sweet duet rich in gently rising horns and sumptuous soul grooves.

Hold Me (7")
Cat: SG 050. Rel: 31 Oct 17
  1. Hold Me (4:57)
  2. You Make Me Feel (4:20)
Review: Japanese soul revivalists Q.A.S.B has been busy of late. This is their third single since July, a release rate that suggests their fourth full-length will soon be landing in stores. "Hold Me" sees them at their sunny, lazy and languid best, with A.Yu.Mi adding sultry vocals to a warm and groovy backing track rich in eyes-closed saxophone solos, clipped guitars and slowly rising horns. B-side "You Make Me Feel", an even more starry and sparkling cut with sweeter vocals and punchier horns, is almost as good as the A-side, especially when the jazzy electric piano solos drop in towards the end of the track. Proper "eyes-closed" material, all told.

  1. Let Me Put It In Your Ear (previously unreleased) (2:49)
  2. In My Life (previously unreleased) (3:56)
Review: Two never-before-released cuts from ill-fated Indianapolis troupe who looked set for the big time but moved to LA and consequently got shelved. 1978's loss is 2018's gain, however, as we're treated to two of their shelved gems right here. "Let Me Put It In Your Ear" is a belting falsetto soul slammer articulated with real urgency while "In My Life" is much more of a smouldering affair that builds up into an emphatic soul crescendo. Put it in your collection.

Give Up (7")
Cat: TR 238. Rel: 09 Nov 17
  1. Give Up (2:59)
  2. How Can I Get In Touch With You (2:44)
Review: New Jersey's RDM Band are perhaps not the most productive of bands to come out of the US' 60s soul sound but, looking back fast things, they certainly had a powerful impact on the scene. Proudly and masterfully, as always, the mighty Tramp imprint have gone and found the band's recordings from 1969, spear-headed by Milton Campbell's iconic voice. Both "Give Up" and "How Can I Get In Touch With You" are utterly timeless examples of what American soul has to teach the world even 40 years after its inception, and you might wanna act fast given just how in-demand the original version of this 7" has become!

Review: More cheeky 45 party power from Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo as they hit their third Soul Flip edit release of the year. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas 1968 letter to gabber DJs of the future "I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing" gets a subtle stomp in the beat department while Sugar Pie Desanto's 1966 R&B pant swinger "Go Go Power" gets the extension its also deserved. Go go Soul Flip.

  2. Stand Up For What You Want (with Les Brown - 7" mix) (4:26)
Review: TMS-released 1984 modern soul cut "Stand Up For What You Want" enjoys its first reissue courtesy of Cordial. The original, loaded with an urgent Les Brown leading the charge, is known across rare groove and funk circles but the unreleased A-side is a lesser spotted animal... Produced by Miami studio genius Willie Clarke, this version fixes our focus plainly on the raw honesty of Kat Roberts solo and sounds all the better for it. Leaner and more emotive, it adds a whole new chapter to a cult classic.

I'm Alive (7")
Cat: ATH 017. Rel: 06 Aug 15
  1. I'm Alive (3:59)
  2. Song For Yvonne (3:18)
Review: Athens of the North continue their irrepressible march towards the title of most active funk and soul archivalists of 2015 with the focus here on a band with a scarcity of recorded output. Formed in 1969, eight piece act Sage preferred the live stage to the studio, building a reputation for a full on blast of soul and funk. According to the Edinburgh label, this I'm Alive 7" popped up out of nowhere some eight years ago, with obscure label Head Records originally pressing it in 1977. Our thanks go to AOTN for granting the two track release a much wider audience! The Latin horns and sunshine soul sound of the title track are complemented nicely by the flipside ballad "Song for Yvonne".

  2. Your Money My Love (2:58)
Review: Bona fide Wigan Pier anthem from 66, Sam & Kitty's full-energy double-sided stomper is the stuff of northern soul legend. "I've Got Something Good" rolls with a rhythm & blues-style guitar hook and big review-style horns backing up Sam and Kitty's duelling dulcets every step of the way while "Your Money My Love" is a bluesier affair with a slower tempo and even bolder horn-work. Often passing hands for around L60, this reissue should be welcome news to many enthusiasts.

  2. Coney Island Getaway (3:51)
Review: Australian in London Sarakula whips up a little time machine with this cheeky Legere 45"; "Northern Soul" takes us back a little earlier into Joel's back cat. Fully remastered, it remains an outstanding piece of thumping Costellian pop thanks to its striking piano line and driving drums. "Coney Island Getaway" brings us back to the present day with his recent album Love Club. Flexing a little more of a Roxy Music spirit in this one, there's some deep dreams coded into its DNA.

  1. When You Are Who You Are (3:22)
  2. Free Will (alternative take #1) (2:55)
Review: Two crucial moments from Gil Scott Heron's immense repertoire; "When You Are Who You Are" takes the lead. Taken from his 1971 album Pieces Of A Man, it's a straight up homage to clarity and honesty told in the context that only Gil knew best. Flip for a very special alternative take of "Free Will". The title track of his following album, released a year later in 1972, the variations of this take (which has never been released on vinyl before) are subtle but strong enough to justify it a place in your collection.

  1. It's Your World
  2. Winter In America
Review: Only 300 copies pressed of this classic Gil Scott-Heron heavy double sider on a limited dinked 45. "It's Your World" is Gil Scott - may he rest in peace - at his funkiest best with an upfront vocal over a driving sax and rhodes- those of you who have seen one or two Gilles Peterson's DJ sets down the years will remember this fondly. "Winter In America" showcases Gil's legendary poetic prose in a meandering, melancholic manner offset by rhodes and flute. Essential.

  1. Running Wild (Ain't Gonna Help You) (2:28)
  2. Gotta Find A New Love (3:01)
Review: Fresh from 68: Atlanta family trio Scott Three only ever recorded two singles and remained something of a local sensation thereafter. It's a shame as there's a real Jackson Five feel to their delivery, especially on "Running Wild" where the session band breaks down and each member pops above the dense music bed. "Gotta Find A New Love" takes a much bluesier tact with rougher instrumentation and an almost rocky build on the choruses. Spotted passing hands for sizeable sums on one bidding site, this is the first time it's been pressed in over 45 years.

Pretty Lady (limited 7")
Cat: DYNAM 7010. Rel: 13 Jun 18
  1. Pretty Lady (2:40)
  2. Universe (Extraterrestrial Search Contact Tones) (2:29)
Review: George Semper's 1984 album Themes For Television, Sports and Aerobics is one of the most brilliantly bonkers you're ever likely to hear. It featured the veteran jazz-man reach for the most intergalactic-sounding electronic instruments he could find and lay down a series of short, library music style missives that still sound like the product of some kind of demented acid trip. The people behind Dynamite Cuts are obviously fans, because they've decided to stick a small selection of cuts from the hard-to-find album on this tidy 7" single. On the A you'll find the deep space, jazz-fired electro-lounge madness of "Pretty Lady", while the flip boasts two shorter cuts: jazzy synth-scape "Universe" and spacey ambient doodle "Extraterrestrial Search Contact Tones".

Review: By the time "Touch Me In The Morning" was mailed out to American DJs in 1979, Marlena Shaw has long since established herself as one of soul music's greatest voices. "Touch Me In The Morning" was merely a promo-only affair, remixed from the shorter "Take A Bite" album version - but it did become something of a dancefloor anthem in certain underground clubs. Here, the sought-after 12" is given a replica reissue, with the stomping, string-drenched title track being accompanied by exactly the same B-side cuts as the '79 pressing.

Review: Not just what Sean Connery sits on when he's relaxing, Showfa is also an intriguing, mysterious editor/collector/blogger/selector with a remarkably deep knowledge of gospel, soul and funk. Here we strike gold with their own Excursions debut as three piano-hammering, harmony-belting fusions run amok... "Thankful" is the prize piece with its full chorus on blast while "He'll Answer" takes a dash of synth disco and slides it under the gutsy vocals while "Just A Little Talk" riffs on a well-known yacht anthem. Hearing is believing... Lord a mercy!

Safe (7")
Cat: SDE 29. Rel: 01 Nov 17
  1. Safe (4:12)
  2. I Wanna Be Closer (4:05)
Review: Since turning their back on hush-hush re-edits in favour of issuing obscure or previously unreleased material, the Super Disco Edits label has barely put a foot wrong. Their latest 7" boasts two previously unissued recordings by former Reflections member John Simmons, who later went on to work as Whitney Houston's "creative director". Both tracks were recorded in 1979, originally as demos for a band Simmons was working with. "Safe", in particular, is superb; a jazz-funk-tinged chunk of modern soul rich in cosmic bass, crunchy Clavinet motifs, twinkling electric piano solos and jazzy guitar flourishes. Simmons' vocal, too, is rather special. Flipside "I Wanna Be Closer" is similarly funk-fuelled whilst retaining the smooth, soulful vibe that marked out Simmons' early productions.
