Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Farbwechsel is proud to present James Booth's vinyl debut, a six-tracker of driving house and techno pieces. Tell Me Lies follows a superb full-length album released on the excellent 100% Silk in 2013 and continues on the path to establish James Booth's own sound. His voice is characterized by an unbelievable precision and sensuality that defines his finely sculpted songs down to the last filter opening. It is this razor sharp focus that fills the EP's minimalist approach with tremendous weight and power. At the same time, this purity also renders the songs to become multifunctional entities capable of lighting up dancefloors while also perfect for the headphone listener.

Mile High Records presents a new EP from the Rawthenticity label boss : Fulbert !
Mastered by Matt Colton, this release clearly demonstrates a new direction in his productions, from twisted analog experiments to raw and dusty grooves.
6000 Miles Away is a slice of life from this confirmed producer who spends his time between Europe and Asia, merging different influences to bring this specific sound, which he holds the secret to.

London-based label For Those That Knoe returns with a terrific release by underrated Slovenian producer Vid Vai. He's been slowly yet steadily honing his craft over the last 12 years with releases on respected labels such as Assemble Music, Tvir, Gilesku and Oskar Offermann's White to name but a few. Laminar Flow also happens to be his first full-length, taking in a wide variety of moods and grooves along the way. From the evocative and acid-laced flow of 'Incubation Theory', the sci-fi electro of 'Oort Cloud' to the sublime ambient offering 'Dusk By The Bay' and the saucer-eyed sunrise breaks of 'Shifting Sands' - the result is a timeless piece of liquid-smooth sonic art.

Review: Few can be said to have met with the secret agent known only by the codename 'Mr. Vibes'. But according to testimony from esteemed minimal techno duo Miroloja, this masked, demiurgic vigilante can often be found stalking various all-night raves in a three-piece technicolour dream-suit, blessing select artist like them with ultra-slippery, dreamy, supernatural music production powers. The result of a visitation from Mr. Vibes is evident on their EP dedication to the mysterious man. Tracks like 'Eternal Lights' are like scourings of underwater memory reserves, pitting snappy tech house ideas against dreamy effects and almost incoherently echoing vocal samples.

Review: Anyone with an ear to the underground will be familiar with the name Kenny Hawkes. The late great house artists had a great influence on the scene and that legacy lives on through close friends such as Classic Music Company boss Luke Solomon, with whom he ran the legendary Wednesday night party Space from 1995-2002. Here Luke has linked up with Space regulars Jonny Rock and Leon Oakey to curate a loveling selected mix of tunes that pay tribute to Hawkes. Space Part 1 is a must for house fans - there is steamy deep stuff from Hawkes himself, post-rave dreamscape material from Cine City, punchy tech house done right and booming, and loopy grooves for dancefloor hypnosis. We hope there will be many more to come after this great first installment.

Fantasy (Herbert's Greenery dub) (9:02)
Review: Herbert's most recent album, the return-to-his-deep-house-roots treat that was Musca, has been given the remix treatment for Record Store Day 2023. It's a predictably impressive package, with Floating Points - delivering a 15-minute trip into glitchy micro-house territory in fine fashion - naturally taking top billing. His remix - kind of like a minimalist take on his own early house excursions, with added early morning weirdness - is far from the only treat on show though. Seven Davis Jr delivers a rubbery, loose-limbed and quietly funky tweak of 'Might As Well Be Magical', before Herbert steps up with his 'Greenery Dub' of 'Fantasy', a slow-burn, near 10-minute affair that recalls the oddball brilliance of his turn-of-the-millennium house releases.

Review: Brazilian producer Processman is something of a rising star, albeit one awaiting a breakthrough (most of his previous appearances have been on compilations or via collaborations). This first solo single for File Under Disco, featuring vocalist Cody, may well provide that breakthrough. Opener 'Adupe' is genuinely brilliant - a cheery, carnival-ready nu-disco number rich in sing-along Portuguese vocals, thickset sub-bass, starry electronics, colourful boogie synths and infectious Latin percussion. Razor'N'Tape co-founder JKriv provides a fine remix, offering a toughened-up groove, heavier percussion and more use of the original mix's short TB-303 motifs, before Processman and Cady return with nu-disco-goes-house jam 'Sou Biana'. Dicky Trisco provides an inspired rework, adding a classic Latin disco feel - via Clavinets, piano solos and sweeping strings - to take the track to another level altogether.

Baci Ballers (6:19)
Big Moma Tech (5:42)
Ground Up Dub (5:53)
Review: Kyle Hall has been hailed as the new boy on the Detroit block for some time now, forgetting perhaps that he has been putting records out since he was 17 - some 15 years ago. The three tracks on the 'Baci Ballers' EP show he's capable of holding his own among the biggest of big hitters, taking house music and giving it a nicely grimy makeover that will ensure these beauties a place in many a techno set too. The title track has a triumphant, rampantly rampaging vibe to it, a throbbing, insistent bassline slapped down by meaty handclaps and brutal hi-hats. 'Big Moma Tech' adds a smattering of female vocal as bleeps and jazzy keys battle it out like Stevie Wonder and LFO having a jam. 'Ground Up Dub' completes the set, based around a panther-like bass keyboard riff that anchors the track while the rhythmic quotient surges and retreats gloriously. Three tracks that differ in everything but their playability and quality.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight dent on the edge, otherwise in perfect condition***

During his lifetime, Dana Kelley AKA DKMA released plenty of superb records, but rarely got the plaudits he deserved from all but the most knowledgeable underground deep house heads. With a little help from Kelley's family, Guidance Recordings has decided to secure and celebrate the producer's legacy via a series of compilations featuring material plucked from a cache of rediscovered DATs. This first volume features material recorded during his most prolific phase in the late '90s and early 2000s, with highlights including the chunky, bass-driven brilliance of 'Spin Hands' - all hard, crunchy drums, ghostly chords and starlight synth sounds -the woozy early morning skip of minimalist deep house gem 'Soul', the hypnotic, locked-in wonder of 'Next To You' and the ultra-deep, tech-tinged headiness of 'Blow It Up'.

Breezy, easy vibes smoulder through every inch of this brand new 12 from label regulars Jonno & Tommo. Over the past ten years the pair have worked their magic through all strands of the house spectrum on labels such as Trelik, Finale Sessions, Verdant as well as Ornate, but on here, chief cut Biosflash places them squarely back in the domain of laidback, deep house. This is a perfect summer roller, and can't fail to put a smile on your face, as you roll your windows down. Stratocaster keeps the sunshine vibe high, yet mines a little deeper, channelling the sounds of classic late-90s deep house labels such as as Seasons, Straight Up and Rotax.

Two bona fide deep house heavyweights, Brawther and Andres, both lend their unmistakeable touches, taking one track each, giving this package a little something extra.

Liquid Son - "Big Decision" (4:38)
Syzgzy - "Meditation" (6:03)
Review: Ed Cartwright's first compilation, which is landing in two parts (this is the first), celebrates the period between 1992 and '96, when electronic music in Britain was going in a multitude of different directions, and the (ultimately unfulfilled) 'brave new dawn' offered by Blair's New Labour government was still some way off. Cartwright's selections thus flit between gorgeous UK techno (Syzygy's 1992 gem 'Meditation'), sub-heavy post-bleep brilliance (Cabaret Voltaire), classic IDM (the Black Dog's Ken Downie as Xeper), mind-mangling slow acid (Thunderhead's excellent 'True Romance'), anti-Criminal Justice Bill material (Ultramarine's 'Happy Land') and some early Matthew Herbert brilliance ('Housewife'). Throw in extensive liner notes from dance music historian Matt Anniss, and you have a fantastic package.

Review: The second part of Ed Cartwright's much-needed retrospective of British electronic music in the post-rave era ('92-'96) - a time of great creativity set against the backdrop of recession and unease at the Conservative government's harsh policies (sounds familiar etc) - is even more impressive than its predecessor. Employing the same hard-to-pigeonhole mix of sounds and styles, it confidently strides between mind-mangling IDM psychedelia (a ridiculously rare Richard D James outing as Strider B), dubby and sub-heavy deep house (Slow Rotor's fantastic 'Space Disco (Dub Edit)' and Fretless AZM's 'Dreamland'), maximal techno-not-techno (Radioactive Lamb), and unfamiliar selections from familiar favourites (the Black Dog, Richard H Kirk as Sandoz). The package also contains extensive contextualising liner notes from UK dance music historian Matt Anniss.

Review: As her star continues to rise to megalithic proportions, Jayda G returns with her most accomplished album to date. From her roots in the deeper pockets of the global house scene she's embraced the full spectrum of artistry, and in teaming up with co-producer Jack PeNate, Iberia's Lisa-Kainde Diaz and Ed Thomas, she's able to present a fully realised pop-leaning record which should confirm her position in the premier league of crossover club music. Basing the album around her late father William Richard Guy and his experiences as an African American man, Jayda G hones in on her songwriting and singing to present a compelling, honest and catchy-as-hell record.

Glitchingly restless come tracks like Hendriks Toth's 'Pescado Y Limon' and Jorge Savoretti & Lulla's 'Zoot', both of which we consider to be highlights thanks to their impressively slick and agile production quality and swing. The tunes by Guy From Downstairs and Unknown Collective are no less beguiling, spanning crossrhythmic pulses to speedy hat-clap hypnotizers.

Review: Following a series of tweaked reissues featuring previously forgotten (and unreleased) remixes of back catalogue gems, Masters at Work offer up something even more special: a double-pack containing four tracks rediscovered in their archives last year. They begin with the bubbly, mid-tempo NYC house shuffle of 'MAW Apes Groove' - all warming organ chords, bubbly analogue bass and oddball vocal samples - before serving up the hip-swinging, sub-heavy, sax-laden bump of KenLou's 'Lost I'M Ready (Sax Dub)'. Over on the second slab of wax, 'Virus Ruff Mutes' is a locked-in slab of house hedonism marked out by a tight, looped organ stab, while 'KenLou' thump recalls the inspired, jazz-dance-friendly, Latin-tinged brilliance of 'The Nervous Track', one of their most admired cuts.

'NMW' kick off with blame deep house grooves laced up with soft none chords that bring warm late night colour. 'Please, Get Away' is another fresh electronic house cut with playful melodic phrases over irresistibly warm bass and pitched up r&b vocals. The Riot (4:21)
Review: Since making his debut on Banoffee Pies Records six years ago, Oliver Gallegos' trademark sound has subtly evolved, with his recent offerings delivering deep, warm, subtly jazz-flecked house that often make great use of sampled vocals. That sound comes to the fore on the Bristol-based producer's Aurore 404 label debut, particularly title track 'Lashed Out', where smoky vocal samples, short jazz guitar licks and fluid-sounding chords rise above a chunky deep house groove. German veteran Ian Pooley provides a fine remix of that track, re-imagining it as a timeless-sounding, warehouse-ready late-night bumper. Elsewhere, 'No Trade No Nothing' is a warming, loose-limbed, gospel-influenced jazz-house gem (early St Germain style if a comparison is needed), while 'The Riot' is a hazy, effects-laden, ultra-deep house gem with a touch of broken beat shuffle.

Review: Roisin Murphy and DJ Koze together on one EP? Yes bloody please. Each of these artists is eccentric characters with sounds to match so you can be sure that their studio sessions were wild indeed. This limited hand-stamped white 12" proves that - it's a stripped-back and dry deep house cut that builds the pressure in subtle ways. Roisin's vocals are as stylised and seductive as ever while the vamping chords have a hint of Detroit techno soul to them and the rumbling bassline keeps things nicely locked. An instrumental comes on the flipside for those who prefer it raw.

Review: Giuseppe Tuccillo is back at it with more of his lithe grooves, offering up some of the sprightliest gear you're likely to hear from the box-jam end of the minimal house spectrum. This time he's stepping out on Melodeum, sounding as on point as ever from the brooding b-line antics of 'Limbo' to the playful organ flex and clipped acid of 'Rainy Day'. There's a light dusting of breaks on 'Too Close' and some more angular funk at work on 'Instant', but crucially the Italian producer binds everything together with a smooth finish which speaks to his deep-running roots in the scene.

For this one, the assured Await 3 brings the party with a selection of hazy and dusty MPC jams with live accompaniment from Jos De Haas of New Cool Collective on percussion and Stefan Schmid from Zuco 103 on keys. The first, 'Just Breathe on Me', is an elegantly deep and energetic Afro-disco groove that features rich percussion and an 'underground' atmosphere. The second track is a collaboration between the Neapolitan producer and London DJ/producer Ace Shyllon, remixing the track 'See My Love', originally produced with Luciano Gioia. The remix merges voice, groove, synth and pads into a sensual and incisive groove suitable for the demanding underground dancefloor. A must-have EP for all deep house enthusiasts.

Watch Them Come (8:45)
Watch Them Come (Green Velvet remix) (6:14)
Watch Them Come (Soul Clap remix) (7:47)
Watch Them Come (Matt N Ricky remix) (6:23)
Review: 'Watch Them Come', a 1999 jam produced by Roy Davis Junior and Jay Juniel, featuring the heavenly vocals of a then-young Peven Everett, is a genuine classic - a percussion-rich chunk of vocal deep house brilliance rich in infectious bass guitar, stretched out synth solos and twinkling electronic piano motifs. It has been remixed a few times before - Jazzanova famously reworked it, for starters - but this new edition marks its' first reissue since 2001. The brilliant original is backed by a trio of 2023 remixes: a bouncy, rubbery, drum machine -driven re-wire from Green Velvet that adds extra percussive punch and some mesmerising electronic motifs; a surprisingly tribal and sub-heavy Soul Clap revision; and a jazzy, analogue-rich Chicago house re-fix from Matt N Ricky. A genuine must-have!

Brooht - "All Together" (6:32)
DOTT - "Life In The Alley" (6:57)
Flylov - "Polygonal Funk" (5:31)
Venetia - "The Night" (6:49)
Review: A year after launching via a four-track trip into techno and breakbeat house territory from Aerofunk, French label Silias delivers a belated sequel. There are four tracks on this release, too, though they come from a quartet of different artists. Brooht gets things going with the locked-in rush of 'All Together', where eight-bit synth stabs and retro-futurist motifs leap above a smooth, club-ready groove, before DOTT delivers 'Life In The Alley', an analogue, sweat-soaked house excursion full of foreboding noises, trippy acid motifs and breathless bass. Over on the reverse, Flylov impresses via the bleeping, house-tempo techno-funk of 'Polygonal Funk', while Venetia's 'The Night' sounds like Daft Punk after a night out in the underground clubs of Paris and Lyon.

Review: Foliage has some respectable heritage in the realm of upfront house music for deep-digging heads, having released work from the likes of Mood II Swing, Mark de Clive Lowe, Jimpster and Jesus Gonsev. This new sampler brings together four immaculate joints which reach from a recent Atjazz reworking of Halo's 'Glory' to Moon Rocket's powerful Afro house throw down 'Reciprocity', Jimpster's immersive remix of Funkky to the Fka Mash 'Re-glitch' of N'Dinga Gaba's 'Summer Breeze'. It's all bursting with soul and perfectly tooled for the floor, so slip one in your bag and you'll have four gems just waiting to give your party a proper lift.

Review: DJ Koze is a master of his craft, and without even so much as lifting a finger, it's proven yet again with his 10th Anniversary Edition of 'Amygdala.' Known for its experimental yet minimal style - which has since trailblazed in his home country of Germany - Koze's knife-edge productions for the LP were far ahead of their time in 2013, breathing fresh life into an often exhausted genre, while also enlisting the help of fellow titans such as Caribou, Apparat, Dirt Von Lowtzow, Milosh and Matthew Dear. It's a classic album of restless detail and domestic lowercasery. Much-aped, but never outmatched.

The Collective Mind (8:37)
Neuro Funk (8:04)
Review: Andreas Werner has released tons of excellent music over the years, mostly under the familiar Audio Werner alias. This, though, is only his second release as Andrew Renew (the first, the minimal house-inclined 'Dark Memories', was released in 2019). It features two superb tracks, both of which combine the sci-fi seeped, star-gazing intent of deep, intergalactic techno, with grooves that shuffle along confidently at a deep house tempo. Our pick of the pair is the ambient techno-tinged trip of 'The Collective Mind', where echoing spoken word vocals seemingly drift above yearning, Mr YT style pads, smooth bass, spacey electronics and unfussy drums. B-side 'Neuro Funk', meanwhile, is a more lilting affair, where Werner's deep and ghostly chords ride a notably warm bassline and crispy drum machine beats.

Review: Berlin label Magic Movement brings more transcultural musical lushness to your ears here courtesy of Kermesse. This new 12", which comes with an insert, opens with the beautifully aimless and rolling house depths of 'On The Road' which empty your mind before 'Limbo' layers in more elastic basslines and subtly vamping chords to get you on your toes. 'Melting' follows that same lazy and inviting groove framework but this time with some indie male vocals while closer 'Wawanko' casts free and heads into the cosmos with rich melodies and more well treated vocals.

Guri - "Beautiful Dreamer" (6:19)
Review: Having mostly used the Pleasant Systems label as a vehicle for his own productions, Tilman has decided to use the imprint's latest release to showcase the work of likeminded artists. He first turns to old pals Rhode & Brown, whose 'Call a Wave (Flute Mix)' sits somewhere between classic Italian dream house, the 'new age house' of Lamont Booker, and their own chunkier deep house workouts, before showcasing the classic-sounding, jazz-flecked New Jersey deep house style sounds of Nu Cleo ('Move'). Experienced producer Will Buck opts for a chunkier, hazier and more warming late-night deep house sound on 'These Emotions', while Guri's flute-sporting 'beautiful Dreamer' recalls the early works of French jazz-house great St Germain.

A timely reissue of an eternal Detroit house classic, and one remastered by Yossi Amoyal and recut at MMM Berlin at that. Carl Craig and the late Mike Huckaby (RIP) remix of Delano Smith, with Craig taking on 'Midnight Hours' with dreamy synths and light, bouncy grooves blazing and some subtly dubby effects up his sleeve, and Huckaby's version of 'What I Do' typified by a cute keyboard motif and some crunchy, crunchy snares. Another tour de force from Sushitech.

Review: Although he was one of the earliest producers to record techno records - he made his debut on Metroplex in 1986 - Eddie 'Flashin' Fowlkes is rarely mentioned in the same breath as the Belleville Three or other Detroit originators. It's a shame, because his back catalogue is full of dancefloor gold and he continues to deliver killer cuts - as this surprise EP for Rekids proves. There's plenty to savour throughout, from the redlined, Inner City-circa-1989 excellence of 'Forever' and the subtly jazz-flecked tribal house of 'Shake Your Body', to the piano-sporting house joy of 'What About Us' (where Fowlkes brilliantly chops up what sound like r&b vocal samples) and the rolling deep house excellence of 'Nice'.

Review: Prognose has sniffed out another collection of retro-future minimal tech house gems here with four artists offering up one track each for this third new outing. Boss Priester's 'Let The Kids Play' is a nice loopy opener with smooth drums and cool synths that have hints of cosmic magic. Jesse Jacob gets more unsigned with the surging 90s bassline and groggy chords of 'Time To Undust This Machine' then Garouda's' 'All The People' has a bit of a garage shuffle as it hurries on through the stars. Distilled Noise' 'Agape' does some freaky things with filtered vocals and skittish percussion.

Review: Is there a more reliable production duo in deep house than Session Victim? They're naturally at the top of their game on their latest EP for long-term label Delusions of Grandeur. They begin by joining forces with dub-wise mic man Ras Stimulant on 'Motivation', a heady and hypnotic peak-time loop jam packed to the rafters with addictive electric piano riffs, delay-laden vocal snippets, jazzy flourishes and intergalactic electronics. Over on the flip side, 'Dromedary Twist' sees them wrap snaking sax lines around a chunky deep house groove laden with sustained chords and jammed-out Rhodes motifs, while 'Green Run' is a delicious downtempo jam of the sort that label co-founder Jimpster used to knock out during the early portion of his career.

Review: London scene veteran Alex Arnout has released on labels diverse as Dogmatik, S.A.S.H. and La Vie En Rose and now he is back with the second release on his very own Modern Explorer. There's four tracks on his new Mind Control EP: the deep retro techno of the title track features an array of early 90s dance music tropes for a proper throwback, being treated to a remix by Laidlaw (Beeyou/Infuse) up next, who injects the track with a nice sense of swing for more of a tech house sound. Over on the flip, Arnout goes all the way back to Detroit circa 1988 on the high tech funk of 'Complex' followed by one more old school blowout on 'Hype Over'.
