Review: Toy Tonic always deliver interesting, functional, emotional house music and here comes another such serving from the so-far so-excellent Cody Currie. The opener is as deep and jazzy as they come, with rich chords and twinkling pads all floating way above a nice warm bassline. 'LS Anthem' plays with broken beats and warped chords that are woozy and rich as a spoken word sample brings a sense of cool. 'When The Time Is Right' then keeps up the magical Rhodes work and a soulful, shuffling groove before 'M9' picks up the pace a little without loosing any of the heart and version of 'Moves' closes in steamy fashion.

Review: Parisian producer Leo Pol is back after a great release on Velvet back in 2014 that showed his potential to create some deep, dusty and totally tripped out house for the afterhours, particularly on the Le Chat Qui Danse EP. He now inaugurates local label IILE (a sublabel of Uniile) with some more hypnotic subtlety; even if it is tougher and faster than his previous effort. There's the opener "2 La Deep De Bretagne" which really rolls deep. "Korben Dallas" gets its swing on in infectious fashion, much like local homeboy Varhat can. On the flip, he teams up with Marc on "21" for a bumpy and minimal jam while closing out the EP is the absolutely sublime "Parking" which is sexy and summery and has a certain DJ Gregory flavour about it.

Review: After a turn from Ted Amber last year, Romana returns with a split release from FilOu and label mainstay Magnus Asberg. FilOu takes the lead on the A side with dark and seductive piece 'Avron', which Asberg then completely shakes up with a classically minimal remix populated by all kinds of wriggling blips and beeps. On the B side, Asberg's original 'Do It' continues the theme of playful micro elements bobbing around the mix. FilOu then hops back on for a remix, dutifully spacing out the original with some more immersive elements that sit around the steady, stripped-back beat

Review: Miguel "Pional" Barras returns for the first time since the release of his excellent debut album, When Love Hurts, on Counter Records back in 2016. Miracle also marks the Madrid-based producer's first appearance on Munich stable Permanent Vacation for almost four years. Opener "Miracle" is far dirtier and sleazier than mucj of When Love Hurts, with ultra-soulful vocals and piercing acid lines wrapping themselves around a sturdy, peak-time tech-house groove. Speaking of tech-house, there's a brilliantly bouncy bonus version in the shape of the Open Up Mix, while flipside "Tempest" combines the spiraling, synthesizer-driven riffs of big room techno with the foreboding bottom-end of early morning heads-down house.

Review: The mysterious Waffles series, rumoured to be the work of Belgian legends Soulwax, has been one of the success stories of 2016. It has succeeded, in part, due to the eccentricity of much of the source material. There's plenty more madness on this fifth volume in the series, with A-side "Aqua Dolphin", offering a skewed fusion of razor-sharp, acid-style electronics, mind-altering new beat rhythms, and plenty of weird, chopped-up vocal samples. Flipside "Computer" boasts similarly psychedelic acid lines, alongside gravelly, end-of-days vocals, synth riffs seemingly inspired by the original 1988 version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love", and a head nodding, toe-tapping breakbeat rhythm. We have no idea what the original source material is, but it's a deliciously weird and wonderful re-edit.

Review: Three distinctly outer space-themed cuts from Greece's Alex Celler, each with a linear minimal/tech skeleton that has other, interloping musical influences draped elegantly and classily across it. 'Ancient Astronuats' has the weird, wired mystical stirrings of early Black Dog about it, complete with melting, bendy electro notations that coax it along and add a psychedelic dimension. 'Stargate To Cosmos' has a playful, Drexciyan feel to it, with crunchy, organic drum beats flirting alongside the more rigid electrics. 'Object In The Sky' is the most minimal of the pack, sleek and stalker-like, but still contains enough action - mainly floating around up there in the ether - to hold and build attention.

Review: Although he's been releasing music since the tail end of the noughties, it's a while since vinyl lovers got the chance to hear fresh material from Trevor Vichas. This surprise 12" for the fast-rising Purveyor Underground Ltd label is therefore a welcome surprise. On title track 'Miss Nice' Vichas wraps jazzy guitar, keys and vocal samples around a chunky, loopy, filter-sporting deep house groove. Demarkus Lewis successfully takes the track up a notch or two on his accompanying remix, before Vichas doffs a cap to the jazz-fired Chicago boompty sounds of Greens Keepers and Mike Dixon on 'Monday Jazz'. The Come Connect mix of that track, which rounds off the EP, is a pleasingly bumpy, bass-heavy and energetic revision that's crying out for peak-time plays.

Review: Last year's 'Will We Ever Dance Again' 12" was a big one for Coyote who now follow it up and impress once more. First up they do so on 'Baka Re-Rub' by paying their respects to the iconic Jon da Silva remix of The FADS track. It's steamy, tropical, full of loose drum energy and jangling synths that lightened up any club. On the flip you find 'No Entry' which is a big house anthem plenty of classic tops, uplifting arpeggios and pianos, and dramatic strings next to big acid lines. It's an all out, hands in the air gem that brings the good times.

Review: Always fun house craftsman Ali Renault secured another big tune with his 'Piano For The People' which is a chuggy groover that locks you in with its rich atmospheres. Now it gets offered up with remixes from, firstly, Aikhi, who flip it with laidback downtempo drums and some classic and well known chords. Calm then brings his Mellow Acid Dub to sink you in even further and last of all Double Geography bring some more crunchy drum textures and psyched-out synth sounds with echoing vocals and dark, late night sense of mischief.

Review: Chad Pulley makes his first solo appearance on John Beltran's All Good Music label, although keener eyed spotters will know that Pulley and Beltran previously collaborated on a track under the Bel-Pull Productions moniker. He steps up to the task ably, slipping into All Good style comfortably with the calm and melodic, gracefully coasting techno of 'Through My Eyes', before the flip side reveals the wistful 'Mesmerizing Blue', where pianos and synths call and respond over exotic rhythms. 'Sticks' completes the set, slightly harder and funkier than its two predecessors but again with an emphasis on musicality, off kilter danceability and originality. On this showing, a name to watch.

Review: Allnite Music boss APOENA returns with the label's second essential release in a mere matter of weeks. Four slices of exceptionally cool house music, from 'Soul People' with its chuntering organs and inspirational rabble rousing sampled from Martin Luther King to 'Meditation' with its cowbell-enhanced groove and oozing, soulful vocals. The serene glide and billowing synths of 'Jus Dance' and the meditational hypnotism of 'Shapeshifters' complete the package, all going to make one neat selection of tasteful, addictive cuts.

Review: Naples does disco like nowhere else and that is from where this EP originates. It is like a siren call to Balearic beat lovers with its hypnotic drum loops and dazzling Italo melodies, The angelic vocals rise out of the mix next to pixelated pads on 'Sirenusa' and soon have you shaking your ass. On the flipside is 'Vetara' which is edgier and driving for the later night hours. But it is still lush and cosmic disco, with swathes of retro-future synth sounds, chugging drums and crispy 80s textures. Irresistible stuff.

Review: K.O.G's Zone 6 Agege album was recorded back in November 2020 and it pays homage to a small coastal suburb in Accra, the Ghanaian capital where he grew up. Now it gets revisited for a series of superb remixes alongside a couple of the original standout tunes. Poirier, Captain Planet and Aroop Roy all bring the class here. Each one is a fresh fusion of Afro-jazz with compelling rhythms at their heart. Originals 'Shidaa' and 'No Way' are still fresh, too.

Today's lesson's in love, are provided by some of our closest friends and label regulars. Each delivering a scorchingly hot original, set to send you into sensory overload.
First up is Okain who, having brought us the incredible 'Acrobat' back in January, steps up again to reveal, what for us, is one of his finest works to date. 'Corner Boys' couldn't be more fitting for 'Love Session'. Its classic beats, sexy vocal sample and hip-grinding, oldschool bassline make it, ok not 'love', but most definitely, SEX!!
Alex steps up himself on track two, and brings us the deliciously sweet and creamy, 'Sundae'. Inventive and ever so tongue in cheek, Alex matches iconic hip-hop, with his modern Parisian beats, to create a perfect party anthem.
From the house-party, to the rave on track number three from, Varoslav. As its name suggests, 'Dancin' Like Ghosts' has a spooky and hypnotic feel. The constant pulse of delicate synths, pierced by hollow beats and piercing hats, together with its demonic vocal, make it a perfect number for those dark cellar gigs.
Finally, and rounding out the EP is Yakine, who delivers a fresh slab of Chicago-inspired house with 'U Dance'. Its killer B-Line, filtered Rhodes and spoken vocal, warms the heart as well as the feet, and make it the perfect track to round out the EP.

Review: Fresh from an appearance on the excellent Rush Hour Amsterdam All Stars compilation, Simon Weiss breaks free with a debut solo release on the Hometaping imprint. A label that has provided a boost to many a producer's profile, Weiss is likely to countenance a few remix and booking requests off the back of the sumptuous sounds here, not least the title track "Yesterday Is Around". Very much influenced by the likes of Parrish and Dixon Jnr, there is an undeniable warmth to the expertly looped strings and delicate vocal sample that will turn many an ear, whilst the rhythms and textures are delightfully fuzzy. Alongside it Weiss flexes his percussive muscle on the expertly poised beatdown of "Bird Movement" which is notable for some excellent pitch shifted melodics, whilst "Body Signature" is delightfully sloppy. Best Hometaping release in ages!

Review: It's nice to be hearing new more new material by Belgian minimal house expert Lawrence Le Doux, who resurfaced after a two year hiatus last year on Kalahari Oyster Cult. In what was one of this week's most welcomed releases, the Vlek records staple brings you his latest one courtesy of Rotterdam's Nous'klaer Audio titled Compassion Lake. The title track's lush ambience sets the tone for a series of chilled-out and introspective grooves, as heard on the smooth broken beat acid of 'Alta' or the clipped jitter-funk of '1010' on the flip, followed by the sombre afterhours dancefloor reflections of 'Tout.

Review: Fourier Transform is a brand new label vying for attention in the minimal and tech house world. On the evidence of its first transmission it will do so with ease: Casey Tucker brings the space age tech funk on 'Deep Soul Calm' with its wiggy lead and crashing hits, then 'Identity' goes more deep on warmer pads and supple grooves. The Vast Profound remix of 'Deep Soul Calm' is a cosmic one, with plenty of modulated synths weaving and warping their way through the cosmos on a wave of positivity.

Review: Lazare Hoche and Malin Genie join forces for a sublime trip through psychoactive tech house that edges away from minimal and into a more colourful, analogue headspace. 'Deep Again' revels in swooping pad swells and rounded lead hooks, of course strapped to one of those impeccably executed four-to-the-floor beats. 'NMS' jacks things up with a punchy synth line and snappy claps that are perfectly honed for the peak time, but there's still a luxuriant melancholy lingering behind the rhythm section thanks to more spacious atmospherics. This is as classy as tech house gets, but what else did you expect from two operators in their absolute prime?

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from deep cover tech house crew OdD, but finally they're back on their own label OdD Music. As demonstrated throughout their discography, the pairing of Damian Daley and Danny Dixon have a unique touch when it comes to their craft, edging a little bite and verve into their productions which is instantly more interesting than 90% of music in the close vicinity. Even the comparatively minimal '1m Pendulum' has more than enough intrigue in the looping phrases darting around the groove. 'Hotep' has an almost French micro house flavour to it, but with a little UK rudeness when it reaches the final third. 'Obelisk' takes the prize though, edging some genuinely moving keys into the mix across a long form, live-feeling techno trip-out.

Review: Father & Son Records And Tapes have already had a strong 2016 with releases from Naphta, DJ Sajko and Das Komplex, and now the Polish label rounds off the year with a stunning album of style-spanning wares from Niemoc. Paramaribo is the first physical release for the emergent artist, and it sports all manner of instrumentation feeding into a wholesome, heartwarming whole. There's a danceable pulse propelling these tracks, and the likes of "Lustro" head more overtly into club territory, but by and large this is an album of plaintive melodics to tug at the heart as much as the feet.

Review: Kris Baha had a big year in 2019 with the release of his debut album on CockTail d'Amore and an EP on Pinkman, and now the Australian body music man in Berlin is back with a high-pressure heater for [Emotional] Especial. "Barely Alive" is the kind of sinewy proto-industrial cut that will appeal to fans of Ministry's earlier work, when the synths reigned supreme and there was pop to match the noir. Especial then call on a cast of remixers to interpret the track in different ways, from Timothy J Fairplay amping up the dystopian disco tropes to Das Ding creating a sleek electro-funk twist with the original's gothic undertones intact.

Review: Elbee Bad continues to provide a direct line to the heart and soul of jacking house music with every new record he throws down. After some strong turns on Thema and LaRhon last year, he's now shored up on Solid Groove with a serious grip of club workouts. "Sock It To Me Mao Fao" is an unrelenting trip through tough drum machine beats, while "In The Key Of N 90's" brings a distinctive, rave stab-like tonality to the table. "Bitten By A Zombie" is a saucy tale riding on sleazy bass and a perilous tale of undead interaction, and "Set Up The Warp Drive" pings off grid for a more experimental kind of groove.

This fourth installment comes with a slightly heavy heart as fellow Chicago titan Paul Johnson leads the way with his 'Jack Nation' remix pumping out while his sad passing still weighs on our minds. Elsewhere, Marko Nastic, Shinedoe, Zombie Nation and NUDE all deliver versions which pay tribute to the legacy of one of the most important club tracks of all time.

Review: Though 420 was originally recorded and released in April of 2020, Galcher Lustwerk's pandemic project is an exercise in counting and patience. Originally from a 16 track, 69 minute release only available for Bandcamp for $69 (or $4.20 per track), the 420 project brings us practically brand spanking new Galcher EP, just under a different name. Finally at an accessible price (and including signature Galcher vocals in a majority of the tracks to boot) this vinyl release hopes to bring more fans who missed the original release to the 420 club.

Review: Charles Webster's 2020 album Decision Time - the veteran East Midlander's first full-lengthi 19 years - was predictably good, but more downtempo and immersive than dancefloor-ready. This EP of remixes from the album is therefore long overdue. The EP-opening Dazzle Drums remix of 'This Is Real' is a luscious slab of jazz and bossa-tinged deep house soul perfection, while Jazuelle's 'Retro Rhapsody' version of 'Music' effortlessly joins the dots between laidback breakbeat, street soul and warming deep house sonics. Over on the flip, Mark E reimagines 'The Spell' as an analogue-rich chunk of gently dreamy deep house hypnotism, while 'Luciano' channels the spirit of Matthew Herbert's greatest micro-house productions on an undulating, soul-enriching full vocal take on 'Music'. Grown-up fare that sounds as good at home as it does in the club.

Review: Welcome to Is A Feeling, a brand new label presumably from Triform who is also known as Scott Featherstone, and Beyond A Void, and Lemongrass. He has a kick for digging deep into his archives to turn out old but still godlier tackle and we guess that Underground Grooves Vol 01 is another such project. This 2" packs plenty of irresistible heat with the lively and low slung drums of 'Take Control', silvery tech edges of 'Skipron' and best of all, the raw, jacked up house of 'Remember Me.' All three are timeless and very useful tunes.

Review: A new label out of Mexico, Short Attention Records launches its second release with a five track offering of proper melodic house & techno from Hector Ram with the word 'quality' stamped large upon them. 'Midnight Sounds' starts things off with the grand rhythmically-building 'Midnight Sounds', almost New Order-esque at times. 'For Our Small Parties' follows, old skool again in flavour, blending subtly employed breaks and a sturdy house framework, then 'Dear Dancefloor', probably the gentlest and most fragile effort here, opens side two. 'On The Road' boasts a more electro feel and Orbital-esque synths, and is deemed worthy of a second airing via a nicely throbbing remix from Detroit's Generation Next closing proceedings.

Review: Maddjazz is an emerging talent from the hallowed streets of Chicago. After two head-turning tunes on Groove Access last May, he now makes a solo debut on the Midway Hustle label that confirmed what we already thought: he's got skill. These five tunes show his range with opener 'Everyday Of My Life' being an early evening deep house roller with soulful vocals dusty production. 'Rain Dance' is a more gritty wall-beater while 'Terror' brings late night acid jack that is primed and ready to destroy any warehouse. kings get deep on the flip with our favourite, the misty late night burner that is 'Those Eyes', then the booming kicks and smeared cosmic chords of 'Y'All Feel That'. Another great outing for this new school Chicagoan.

Review: New York champ Son Of Sound has been off the radar for a few years, but now he's back with a fresh drop that brings some of that upfront house bump that could only come from the Big Apple. Dusty samples, insistent jack and bags of attitude abound on "Don't Count On Me For Love", while "Deep Tri-State (That Love)" takes things far out into trippy broken beat territory that wouldn't sound out of place chilling next to a Hanna production. "Truth Be Told" ups the ante with some gorgeous cascading keys and an irresistibly funky rhythm section, while "Say More" has some fun with spaced out samples and a lazy loop that make up a sweet vibe to chill on.

Review: Motor City mainstay and former Slum Village associate DJ Dez Andres has many skills up his sleeve from mad scratching to vibrant Latin flavour mixes that draw on his Cuban heritage via dusty house rollers and deep hip-hop gems. Here he mixes all that up on a new EP for Beretta Music that is now available on purple vinyl. His sunny and delightful melodies are present and correct in each cut, as are his signature slouchy and hip-hop-inspired drums. All four of the tunes hit the sweet spot but the funky boucle of 'Back To Nature' is one that really stands out here.

Review: This surprise new EP finds celebrated music writer and producer Blackdown on the same EP as Burial for the first time since the latter remixed the former 15 years ago. There is a heavy Detroit influence in the far-sighted synths of 'This Journey' (VIP), with angsty vocal samples stitched into the bristling, swinging rhythm. Burial's 'Dark Gethsemane' bares all the producer's usual hallmarks - pitched up vocals, deft samples and a catchy 2-step shuffle. Review: German producer Simon Hinter has been quiet for the last year. But now, 12 months after his last outing, the quietly assured artist is backed with three more of his raw, funky, filtered and chunky house grooves. They come after years of superb sounds on the likes of Tenth Circle, Suspected and Phil Holland and have previously been supported by DJs like Osunlade. Ewan Jansen returns to RAND Musik for a tricksy foray through the standard yet effective selection of four tracks: all are disparate, seemingly enchanted worlds. From opener 'Electropolis', we're launched into a bustling, wild, alternate garden of the dance, teeming with all manner of keen creatures and organic-sonic delights. Then comes the (hopefully) anime-referencing 'Lain's Groove' and 'Dead Nights And Headlights', which edge closer to the darker cores of Jansen's shadow self in sound. We finally reach the precipice on 'Wild Shore', which hears us witness the sonic core to end all other cores, in its brimming totality.
