Review: The brilliant Chronicle has been quiet for a minute, but comes back in fine form with this keenly curated various artists 12" that re-affirms the label's vision of cerebral, deep and driving techno. Damon Wild shows his tender side on the gorgeous, immersive "Constant Search", while Ben Sims brings a tougher palette to bear on peak time percussive belter "Vicious Cycle". Steve Bicknell summons a fearsome, metallic dervish on the monolithic "Chapter Of Self", and Tadeo takes things bleepy, loopy and uplifting on "X Marks The Spot". It's a 12" of stunning modern techno from start to finish.

Review: Ben Sims's label delivers a diverse but hard-hitting three-tracker. The label boss is first up and "Bite This" sees him sever the links with his loopy past. It's still a repetitive track, but as its basis Sims deploys a pulsing electronic groove and firing percussion, while a malevolent riff makes the transition from jarring and abrasive to atmospheric and eerie. Ritzi Lee travels a similar path on "Reverse Processed", where snappy percussion and a nagging bassline underpin metallic stabs and jarring riffs that reach out into the darkness. By contrast, Paul Mac's "Dry Run" is a more soulful experience. Despite the proliferation of spiky, metallic drums, it's the screeching, slightly deranged male vocal that stands out.

Review: Ben Sims made his name as a DJ, but increasingly, his productions are proving to be impressive. The title track is a huge club track: based on steely, slamming beats, it features a whooshing filter and jarring, discordant riffs, while its 'in my life' and 'hardcore sucker' samples provide a reminder about Sims' own rave background. Orlando Voorn's "Search & Destroy" remix also mines the past and sees the Dutch producer drop heavy claps and evil siren riffs. Ritzi Lee's version is more restrained, featuring a walking funk bassline, and even the siren riffs that cascade in over the arrangement sound tame by comparison.

Review: Enjoying something of a renaissance recently, Stephen Brown steps up to Theory to deliver two tracks and surrender them to Ben Sims for surgery. In their original forms, "Fuego" and "Polar" are stunning slices of stripped-back techno. The first pumps on a prominent shuffle carved out of tough, funky drums, but keeps the synths subtle and spacious, while "Polar" gets dubbier and freakier with a soft beat and an ace hiccupping vocal slice. Sims' remixes unsurprisingly jack things up noticeably, retaining both tracks' inherent qualities but giving them a good old UK techno injection to cut it in rougher situations.

Review: The first release of the year for Ben Sims' Theory label sees the man himself return with "Something"; Sims' own take on the track is filled with all the wiry funk we've come to expect from the UK techno veteran, pairing a pounding kick, noisy snares and a flanged sonics with an unexpectedly soulful vocal sample, while his other offering, "The Little Jam" offers a devastating peak time tool characterised by its undulating atonal synth lines and stony rhythmic stomp. Two similarly minded techno characters also conspire to offer their own versions of the title track; Truncate offers a ghetto house inspired take, whose jacking drums are accented with some deeper Chicago strings, and the masked enigma Rivet, whose version injects a bit of rhythmic swing into the more rigid original thanks to its rolling toms and techy piano stabs.

Review: Ben Sims and Kirk DeGiorgio need no introduction, but the Machine label, now at its second release, does. The two inaugurated the imprint last year with the Machine Theme EP, which saw the two supply a track each, while Sims remixed Degiorgio. The second EP mirrors the first, only Degiorgio returns the favour by reworking Sims "Strike", turning a bouncy and peak time production into something deep and hypnotic. Degiorgio then turns the EP on its head by providing the Daft Punk and anime soundtrack-sounding "Guardian Angel".

Review: For those who had assumed Sims was merely a loop techno producer, 0401 provides a pleasant surprise. The UK producer's love of slamming beats and dense, claustrophobic rhythms is present and correct, but on this occasion it sounds like there is a more fluid, dynamic approach at play. This is due to the use of rasping percussion and a malevolent filter that rises through the track. Former UR operative Rolando shows that he hasn't lost his magic touch on the remix of "New Blood". Coruscating drums and a wild acid line make for a thrilling combination, but Rolando hasn't forgotten his house leanings and the swinging rhythm also features a repetitive vocal sample.

Review: The UK techno veteran Ben Sims twists and teases his machines to the point of exhaustion on Air Rage Part 2. "Machine Funk" sees Sims deliver a more upfront, slamming approach, its tunnelling, filtered riff swirling above the terse metallic framework, while the title track takes the prize for most intense cut. Powered by hissing percussion and propulsive drums, it's the grinding air raid siren that powers in overhead that makes it so memorable.

The Hardgroove head honcho and all round techno legend delivers three cuts of bangin' and dusty house that's full of attitude under his new Ron Bacardi alias. "Rock Your Body" features massive drums and a cavernous bassline this side of Shed or Special Request plus mysterious, crooning vocals; it's wicked! "First Effort" is jacking, funky and a downright loopy workout reminiscent of classic DJ Sneak. "The Money" is more like the Sims we know on this tough and tribal DJ tool that delivers all the funk and 'oomph!' so typical of his sound.

Review: All the secret weapons a techno DJ needs right now on one handy EP, courtesy of Netherlands-based EPM Music. The minister of techno himself Robert Hood is first up on EPM20 EP1, kicking off the A side with his idiosyncratic sound as always on the chiming and hypnotic cyclicality of 'Shadows', followed by Hardgroove chief Ben Sims who brings the polyrhythmic tribal funk as always on 'Xotnuc'. Over on the flip, UK veterans James Ruskin and Mark Broom appear, fresh off their recent Deadhand release, albeit separately. The former's contribution is the austere pressurizer 'There Was A Time' which ventures into truly ominous territory.
