Over the course of his long and successful career, Ennio Morricone composed many dance songs in step with the fashions of the late 60s and early 70s. These were themes not necessarily directly connected with his films' synopses, but which were nonetheless played in disco clubs, on jukeboxes, turntables and on the radio. This collection contains a selection of pieces such as the brilliant main theme from Grand Slam (1967); the shake rock (opening credits) from Dario Argento's classic Four Flies On Grey Velvet (1971) the danceable from the noir film Violent City (1970); the beat version of the opening credits of 'Pioggia Sul Tuo Viso' by the Sorrows, from How I Learned to Love Women (1966); 'Per Vittorio (Bossa)', an elegant bossa nova with flute and percussions from The Success (1963); the tribal shake from I Cantori Moderni, which winks at the dies irae from Garden of Delights (1967); 'Scuola di Ballo al sole', a wild surf piece from the Hawks and the Sparrows (1966); the supreme bossa nova from One Night at Dinner (1969) with the super iconic voice of Edda Dell'orso; the shake music of "'Ostinazione al Limone from What Have you Done to Solange? It is one of the albums in his discography that rather gets overlooked, which is not hard to understand given its breadth and depth, but that's not to say it's right. Experimental elements intertwine with his skillful knack for composition as hair-raising violin notes sit next to ominous percussion. Review: As is usually the case with Ennio Morricone soundtracks, we always end up more intrigued by the films he's scored by virtue of him being the scorer. In rare cases, in fact, do we believe we would have seen the film otherwise if it weren't for Morricone's reputation. 'Magdalena', for example, is an obscure Yugoslavian film depicting a tumultuous love affair between a devout priest and a free-spirited young woman. Morricone's soundtrack is moody, drum-brushed and suspenseful, nailing the feeling of facing the dire consequences of a grave act; falling in love with the wrong person, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Review: 1980's Un sacco bello translates as Fun Is Beautiful and is an Italian comedy movie that was produced by Sergio Leon and marked the debut for director Calro Verdone, who was also the head actor and screenwriter. The soundtrack is one of the very many by legendary composer Ennio Morricone and this was his first collaboration with Verdone. He wrote pieces for each of the main scenes in the movie with the opening being a funky rhythm workout before more nostalgic, dreamy and romantic pieces follow later, all performed by an orchestra and additional musicians.

Review: A number of Ennio Morricone's best soundtracks have been pieced together in a five part reissue series that now serves up its final instalment. Each collection centres on a different movie genre and this one, Passion, shows the more romantic and lovestruck side to the artist's sound. The Italian brings all his usual gusto, energy and passion to these pieces which range of sentimental and teary eyed ton more heavy and heart broken. Each one is pregnant with emotion and makes for truly involved listening even without the pictures to accompany them.

This volume is focussed on his work with Italian directors from the late 1960s up to the 1980s and the music was made for dark films and the occasional horror. This is the Italian's milieu, though, where he feels most at home and gets his best results. This limited pressing on translucent red vinyl includes a four page insert with liner notes written by Claudio Fuiano and plenty of eerie tracks that will have you looking over your shoulder.

The film was directed by Massimo Dallamano and tells the tale of a series of violent murders that happened at a Catholic girls' school in England where a young student has gone missing. The soundtrack is suitably taught and tense throughout, with grand moments of drama and theatre in his usual unique fashion.

Following the likes of Cosa Avete Fatto A Solange? and Theme V: Passion comes Istruttoria E Chiusa: Dimentichi from this renowned composer. The film was a 1971 Italian crime drama directed by Damiano Damiani and for it Morricone crafted an obscure score to the thriller which went on to be globally admired by fans and critics alike. A couple of tunes here were not used in the final film having been recorded in the original session and they are the B2 and B3, which both need hearing.

Review: Before you dive headfirst into this one it's probably worth pointing out 'Pitturamusica' is as much an academic exercise as it is a complete album. There are moments of such heartbreaking beauty you feel genuinely touched to the core - the sweet, sombre and hushed strings of 'Corpopaesaggio', for example. But then the artists make no secret of what the record was designed to do, namely use the basis of Musique Concrete to see what lies down some pretty abstract roads. Whether processing human voices to within one iota of coherency, as on the frenetic 'SB', or captivating listeners with the intricate flutes of 'Conchiglia', it's safe to say they make more than a few intriguing discoveries. At times these are challenging and somewhat chilling ('Apollo'), in other moments the white noise, crackles and found sounds seem to celebrate the chaos of life itself ('Venere D'Urbino').
