Ennio Morricone's legacy is well known across the world, or at least the world of cinephiles. The legendary film composer is responsible or no less than 400 movie and TV scores (in fact, he's made a few more), with a 100-strong oeuvre of classical compositions to add to that storied back catalogue. Sadly lost last year at the age of 91- unrelated to coronavirus - much of his work is now rightfully returning to the release schedule.

Of course, none of his output can match the music he created to accompany Spaghetti Westerns - Italian made cowboy movies from directors such as another late-great, Sergio Leone, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars. 134 of the finest arrangements from that part of his life are included on this mammoth collector's item, which proves you don't really need visuals to be transported to the wild frontier towns of yesterday.

Review: It is not without good reason Rolling Stone magazine described The Mars Volta's as "like finding the key to another dimension teeming with monsters and magical arcana; twisted fables and dangerous lore". Pressing play, stepping through that portal, feels transformative, whether it's the first or 40th time you've heard their work, which can either be abrasive, jarring and unsettling, or beautiful and life-affirming.


Progressive rock at its most otherworldly and explorative, La realidad de los suenos is probably the most fitting career-spanning box set you could hope for them to release. From the hidden 3D glasses turning LP cover into an alien-like world, to the breadth of tracks on offer, if you're stepping into this realm be sure to leave a trail of breadcrumbs as it's difficult to remember where you are once the music takes hold.

Review: Racionais MC's (misplaced comma band's own) are one of the main Brazilian rap and hip hop outfits of their generation. Most prominent during the 90s, the Sao Paolo collective were socially and politically aware in their work and put out seven full lengths right up to 2014. This gigantic 10 LP box set includes the complete discography of the band with a new poster also included not to all the red hot beats. They're raw and real, rooted in classic boom-bap but with plenty of additional Latin flair.

Review: Brace yourselves, we potentially have some rather worrying news. It has been 25 years since 'I Should Coco' was unveiled to the world, debut album from Gaz Coombes and Co. If you remember when that happened then there's a good chance you're now reflecting, or trying to remember everything (anything?) you've done in the meantime.

The band in question - Supergrass - hope some of that involves some of the contents on this expansive box set. Or not - in many ways it's more fun to use this as a discovery tool. A mammoth six LPs, 13 CDs, 7" single ('Caught By The Fuzz / Richard III 2020 Remixes'), book, colour poster and selection of badges are offered, allowing you to get fully immersed in the kaleidoscopic world of these psychedelic-tinged alternative rock dons. A good place to be, considering the planet's current dystopian path.

Review: As if The Microphones' output wasn't comprehensive enough already, Phil Elverum and co. have decided to compile every release from the indie rock band's 25-year strong career into a singular "humungous" box set. The item itself is a heavy-duty, full-colour, foil stampled slip case, containing every moment of heartbreak captured and laid to wax by Elverum since 1997; that includes the mournful, folk-textured tones of 'The Glow, Pt. 2', 'Mount Eerie'. That's not to mention a comprehensive collection of early tapes, live recordings, unreleased outtakes, and stems for - yes - almost everything they've ever released.

Review: This compilation started out life as a CD-only release. Now it makes it to vinyl courts of Vinyl-On-Demand and gets expanded for the occasion. Zoviet France is actually a music group from Newcastle upon Tyne. They have put out a vast wealth of albums - 27 since 1982 - and all of them are experimental, at times dissonant. Drawing on industrial textures, they also touch on drone and ambient and pull you deep into their own unique sound world as a result.

Review: The Rolling Stones In Mono was first released in 2016 as a box-set charting the megagroup's entire roster of British and American studio albums. Deferring to the original mono playback format for which their music was originally recorded (and thus sounds best with) this monster compilation is a comprehensive look back at the Stones' 1960s heyday - plus their 2016 additional exclusives and rarities album, Stray Cats.

Review: Recorded over three nights at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, endlessly prolific Aussie psych-rock auteurs King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard invite you to experience their intense live shows in the closest manner to being there in person and the only way they know how (with an absurdly massive 12xLP self-proclaimed bootleg collection). Taken from performances on Oct 10th, Oct 11th and Nov 2nd of last year, these 80+ cuts run the gamut through the collective's heaviest, softest, most direct and ludicrously impenetrable sonic meanderings, whilst wrapped in individual sleeves with an accompanying photo journal of their great takeover of the Colorado plains.

Review: Illuminating the remarkable, and largely otherwise undocumented, creative ferment within and between the British and American scenes of experimental music during the mid to late 1970s, Dialogo's box set - made in full collaboration with all of the composers or their estates - contains the entire ten album output of the label, completely remastered and housed in faithful mini-replicas of their original covers and liner notes, as well as an extensive booklet. Over the last few years, the Italian imprint has showed a remarkable dedication to the history of experimental music via reissues of seminal artefacts from the Cramps catalog, and important albums by Piero Umiliani, Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, Enrico Rava, and others. This initiative now takes on a towering scale with the first ever box set gathering the entire ten album collection of Brian Eno's Obscure Records, originally issued between 1975 and 1978. A truly groundbreaking body of recordings - many of which have remained out of print and difficult to find for decades - it contains some of the most important, influential, and enduring music to emerge during the second half of the 20th Century, which collectively reconfigured the terms of Minimalism and laid the groundwork for the emerging movement of Ambient music over its short, three year run.
