Review: RECOMMENDED
Black Sabbath are one of those bands that, even if you think you've heard it all, will almost certainly have a vault of music sitting somewhere untouched. Their legacy is so significant, and covers so many decades, many of which preceded these un-inspiringly organised and archived music years, there's going to be forgotten recordings in half the UK's rock 'n' roll pubs that are still standing, and that's just for starters.

Here, ten of those overlooked, dust-covered, neglected and rejected dark metal adventures are collected into one bumper, super-collector's item. Even a quick play through proves that this record deserves to exist, whether the tracks are new to you or not these versions are nothing short of epic. More so, though, the collection shows Sabbath were not just prolific, but achingly talented and absolutely impossible to countenance. Ever. Riffs for days, energy for weeks, and innovation for all time, although we probably didn't need to point that out.

Review: Twenty-five singles, all in original sleeves. This is far 'deeper' than anything we've seen on this label before, rivalling Now Again or Cali-Tex for quality indie status while blending in the cream of the major label crop from the same period (Warner's, ATCO Josie, Reprise, Loma, etc). Packaged in an incredible heavy pasteboard box, with a handle (in the old style) and psychedelic-shack inspired artwork on all 4 sides.

Review: In addition to the ongoing series of Fela Kuti reissues undertaken by Knitting Factory, the Brooklyn label has latterly taken to irregularly calling on some celebrated fans to curate their own box set-shaped collections of personal favourites from the Nigerian legend's sizeable archives. Commencing in 2010 with Roots rhythm doctor Questlove at the helm, it seems that the series operates on a bi-annual axis with Ginger Baker's 2012 edition now complemented by this 7LP set curated by Brian Eno. Drawing from a cross section of Fela Kuti output that joins the dots between the '70s and '80s, the box set also features a 12-page booklet with a foreword by Eno, song lyrics, and in-depth commentaries by Afrobeat historian Chris May.

Review: You have to admire Ostgut Ton's ambition. While celebrating a decade in dance music with a compilation of exclusive, previously unheard music is now standard practice amongst leading underground labels, few would have the balls to release it on a box set that boasts no less than 10 slabs of wax. Unsurprisingly, the track list is like a who's who of left-of-centre techno and deep European house, with Marcel Dettmann, Boris, Virginia, Steffi, DVS1, Martyn, Tobias and Ben Klock all featuring. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, from the spacey electronics, heady textures and hypnotic rhythms of Function's "DX3 Analog Bass Seq", and the rush-inducing, string-laden house warmth of Matthew Styles' remix of Dinky's "Planes", to the picturesque intelligent techno of Doms & Deykers.

Review: Vinyl On Demand are on a bit of a roll as of late, and this extensive - and largely excellent - collection of lo-fi tape recordings is another stunning example of how these guys operate. Not happy with having explored a vast amount of music from the European quarters, Frank Maier, the head of the label, has decided to go give himself an ambitious mission here by collating rare and wonderful recordings from the American cassette culture, masterfully executed and beautifully packaged. With 12 LPs, two 7 inches, and well over 100 tracks on here, this is any collector's dream, a sign that God must exist and that we were silly to think that such perfection couldn't be packed into a compilation. From the wonky drum machine jams of Marc Barreca, to Anode Productions, K Leimer, and even Steve Roach's visionary proto-electro/techno, there is so much gold in here that we're quite taken aback ourselves. it's almost the end of 2015 already, and this might well make it into the top 5 releases of the year. No, we're not joking, it's that important, and that good. All killer, no filler.

Review: Trust Vinyl On Demand to come through with a comprehensive box set that will question the knowledge of even the most studious of Minimal Synth and primitive electronics fans. As the title suggests, the seven LP Official Guide To Scottish Minimal Synth 1979-1983 casts it's gaze over the synth scene in Scotland in the late seventies onwards with a focus on the contribution of Alistair Robertson in particular. The Glasgow-based musician ran the Synthetic Tapes label during this period, issuing music from his own various projects and others and the seven LPs deftly showcase how Robertson got involved in the synth scenes of various other Scottish cities as the eighties progressed.

Review: Prepare to be utterly bewitched by this highly collectable Groove Merchant boxset, which is just so damn adorable you can't help but fall in love with it. Housed in a handmade wooden box, this limited edition set contains ten 7"s pressed exclusively for this release. The music itself is in keeping with the bespoke packaging; we'll nominate the late night smoky soul of The McCrary's "Emerge" and uber-rare repress of Darondo's "Legs (Part 1)" as the Juno highlights. However everything contained in this set is the aural equivalent of a multiple orgasm, with Groove Merchant trusted purveyors of funk, soul and Latin sounds for nigh on two decades. Don't um and ah about this one - only 250 have been made and once they're gone, they're gone.

Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing for all those who love Al Green's distinctive brand of soul: a deluxe box set containing re-mastered, replica versions of "45s" released by the singer on Hi Records between 1969 and '78. It's a wonderfully packaged and produced item, with no less than 26 seven-inch singles being joined by a 56-page hardback book and an ultra-limited Hi Records 45 adaptor. The music is, of course, superb, with the singles containing many of Green's most potent, celebrated and well-known works alongside largely forgotten B-sides and lesser-celebrated bonus cuts.

Review: Trance and progressive house stalwarts Bonzai Records are celebrating their thirtieth year on this Earth, and with that, they've come out with a whopping 5xLP box set charting all their best tunes over the years. Classics from Push, Thunderball, Trancescape, Airwave, The Green Martian and yes, DJ Looney Tune all appear here, on a monumental 10 sides of vinyl. For the seasoned trance digger (which many of the younger generations of dance music lovers have become recently, too), this is a daydream. Also comes with an exclusive mug (sold separately).

Review: If you type ELO into Google today the first suggestion is Elon Musk. Sure, he might have cracked, to some extent at least, the mass-marketed electric car, and all the best to him in the space race. Nevertheless, it's disputable whether or not he was ever quite the visionary Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan were in the early-mid-1970s. The undisputed heyday of Electric Light Orchestra, fourth album Eldorado was arguably at the peak of their creative force. Already having firmly established their sound - a surreal hybrid of bar rock, soul, blues, and grand strings - this record really sees them explore the possibilities of that abstract brew. Better yet, ears were open enough at the time to ensure they didn't languish in obscurity, sole reserve of the obsessives or deliberately contrary listeners, and instead claimed a spot in the upper echelons of British pop at the time.

Review: Where do you start with Carole King? From her reign as the most successful female songwriter in the UK album charts from 1962 to 2005, a staggering achievement for any foreigner, to the New York-born artist's claim of charting 118 Billboard Hot 100 tracks in the US at the time of writing, some of which were written during her tenure as a scribe at the Big Apple's Brill Building, often cited as the centre of the American pop industry during the latter half of the 20th Century.

Focusing on her own work, though, and by 2022 we've had no less than 25 full length releases from King, with Tapestry her second, and without question one of her finest hours. Songs like '(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman', and 'You've Got A Friend' remain timeless examples of what timeless pop music sounded like in decades when tracks regularly had a shelf-life well beyond a year or two.

Review: 1975's Black Sabbath album, Sabotage, was written at a time when the band were caught up in an ongoing legal battle with their former manager. That is what gave the album its title and no doubt fuelled some of the more abrasive and angry tracks. The newly remastered reissue is now paired with a complete live show that was recorded during the band's 1975 tour. Of the 16 tracks, 13 have never before been released. As well as a special new booklet with further fan delights, two extra tracks feature on a bonus 7" with artwork that replicates a rare Japanese version of the single.

Review: American alt-rock hero Bob Mould has had a long and storied career that started in 1996. On this new and impressively large collection of tracks across nine slabs of vinyl he looks back at his best moments right up until 2007. The 70 year old has a left of centre sound that has never quite received the recognition it deserves whether he was working solo or with the punk-ish Husker Du, Sugar, his second band. The tracks cover a wide remit of sounds from angsty and tense to more reflective and mournful and show that Mould is one of those rare musicians who could do whatever he wanted to, and do it well.

Review: For longer than many of us have been alive, Dimitri From Paris has been one of the disco scene's top re-editors. As a result, this box set of essential rubs from the legendary French producer is a genuine treat. Lavishly packaged and presented in a printed tote bag, the set whips through classic rearrangements of storming peak-time disco cuts from Odyssey, Dan Hartman, Phyllis Hyman and Keni Burke, before delivering dedicated 12s featuring multiple revisions of cuts by Ashford & Simpson, Jamiroquai and Chaka Khan. As you'd expect, there are many must-check tweaks to be found on the latter plates, including a slow-burn instrumental take on Ashford & Simpson's 'Stay Free', a wonderfully spacey 'Dubwize' rework of Jamiroquai's 'Cosmic Girl' and a sing-along-friendly version of Chaka Khan's stunning 'Clouds'.

Review: This limited edition 7" box set is a special 40th anniversary reissue from Chrysalis. Compiled by Jerry Dammers, it's a treasure trove of his favourite singles from the label between 1979 and 1984 with standards from Madness, The Beat and Dammers' group, The Specials. From the horn led joy of "A Message To You Rudy" to the uptempo cover of "The Tears Of A Clown" via a bristling live version of The Specials' "The Guns Of Navarone", this is a fine overview of ska's golden age.

Review: Ooh this is special. The legendary Ultravox frontman and electronic pioneer John Foxx presents a special edition version of his Cathedral Oceans trilogy across 5 LPs! In addition to the three Cathedral Oceans albums, released over a timespan of some eight years from '97 onwards, Demon Music also slip in a hardback book and DVD relating to Foxx's art exhibition of the same name. This is how you do a boxset! Definitely one for the fans.

Review: Light In The Attic presents a new, exclusive vinyl release of the soundtrack to Wong-Kar Wai's stunning romance film, Chungking Express. One listen to this new orange, green and purple vinyl pressing and we're instantly thrown back to the film's key images: rainsoaked plane tickets, macho police officers, dingy sandwich bars, metal shutters opening and closing wistfully... all is compounded by the soundtrack's blend of Cantopop, dream pop and jazz, carefully woven between our half-remembered Hong Kong haze. Aside from a movingly bespoke OST by composer Roel A. Garcia, you've also got choice songs by The Mamas And The Papas, Flying Pickets, Dinah Washington - and, of course, Faye Wong's legendary Cantonese dreamworld cover of The Cranberries' 'Dreaming'.

Review: It feels like we've seen a million albums with titles like In the Mood for Love. We probably have. However, this is the actual In the Mood for Love album, and by that we mean the score to the acclaimed Wong Kar-wai film which, as luck would have it, deals with all matters of life, love, desire and betrayal, telling the story of a man and woman whose respective spouses have an affair, leaving them to pick up the pieces together, at which point their own feelings towards one another start to become apparent.

Enough cinematic back-storytelling, though. How about the music? Well, it's accomplished stuff to say the least. Filled with mournful string sections, traditional Far Eastern folk, and, err, Nat King Cole. The result is a genuinely emotional aural journey, taking us to the depths of despair while also managing to romance you.

Review: Eddie Piller is a music authority wherever you land him. He's best known as the head of Acid Jazz Records, a genre defining label which seized a very particular energy in music culture and fostered remarkable talent in artists trying new approaches. As someone who cut his teeth as a mod DJ during the revival years in the 1980s, Piller has fathoms deep knowledge of the subculture and its sound, and he follows up the 2020 compilation The Mod Revival with a more specific look at the original British mod phenomenon in the 1960s. There's classics galore and hard to find gems you'd be spending serious money on to own on a 45, so make life that little bit easier and grab this stockpile of expertly selected tunes that succinctly capture one of the great subcultures from the early days of British youth culture.

Review: Fela Kuti's vast back catalogue can be difficult to navigate for newcomers, so box sets like this one can be a good starting point. "Co-curated" by Kuti's son, Femi, and (for reasons that aren't explained) Coldplay's Chris Martin, the box contains five legendary albums (Why Black Man Dey Suffer, Noise For Vendor Mouth, Kalakuta Show, Excuse O, Ikoyi Business, Original Sufferhead and Overtake Don Overtake Overtake) in replica original Nigerian covers. The box also boasts an excellent 20-page booklet featuring extensive liner notes by Femi Kuti, Chris Martin and Afrobeat historian Chis May, plus a poster designed by Fela Kuti's favourite illustrator. It's a great package all told.

Review: Where do you start with a band like Depeche Mode? Easily up there with the most influential British live acts of the late-20th Century, and early-mid-21st - a term we specifically use because their work spans so many genres, from synth pop and new wave to alt and dance rock - the fact just one of their records can garner the kind of reverence that can produce 33 remixes by some of the most respected names in electronic sounds says more than we ever could even if this paragraph went on forever.

Here we have it, then, definitive collection of repurposed and rethought songs from the 2001 LP, Exciter. Veering from the deep proggyness of Danny Tenaglia's take on 'I Feel Loved', through Dave Clarke's breakneck sledgehammer-yet-spacey techno interpretation of 'Dream On', broad sounds would be putting it mildly indeed. Other highlights including the lucid downbeat of Bertrant Burgalat, epic dance metal of DJ Muggs, and sparse, stargazing atmospheres of Isan Falling Leaf.

Never residing at the top of the common conscience, Rallizes Denudes were a Japanese rock band spawned by the late-1960s, who managed to last two decades plus before disbanding, only to resurrect the project in the mid 1990s. At which point the shrieking, wailing, cacophonous guitar action sounded a lot less groundbreaking than in their formative years, with the noise scene overall having well and truly risen to prominence by that point.

By no means a criticism, as they always say originals do it better, and Denudes were unarguably well ahead of their time, and in many ways still are. This record is a case in point - a collection of live recordings from seven concerts played in and around the Tokyo metropolitan sprawl. Collated for the first time ever on record, having circulated among fans over the years between, it's a fascinating expiration of a triumphant group at their best.

In a word - epic. Nick Cave has never been one to shy away from presenting his work in commanding, theatrical, operatic ways, and this compilation of half-known cuts, covers, and barely heard tracks is probably the best example you're going to find of that, on record. Losing count at around 30 songs is just one case in point.

The collection is expansive to the point of becoming overwhelming, but more remarkably still, everything on here deserves to be loved. And we really do mean everything. Running through the highlights would be reductive, but stylistically this isn't an easy one to summarise either. As such let's leave it with this. From the raw, pared back percussion of 'Black Betty' to the heartfelt homage to The Pogues on 'Rainy Night In Soho', you can rest assured whatever your poison, it's on here.

Review: Jazz pianist Monty Alexander hails from Kingston in Jamaica, and Ernest Ranglin is often said to be one of the world's best guitarists. They are an audacious pair who cook up real magic when they work together and are the foremost act in the nice world of jazz reggae. Their sound is a perfect ad literal combination of those two genres and this album is a live recording of the Montreux Jazz Festival in June 1995. It features a cover by Bob Marley is a real cornerstone n the history of jazz reggae that is all the better for the unique interplay between Alexander's piano and Ranglin's guitar.

Review: You can always rely on the Cocoon compilations to bring you a high level of quality control and an authoritative overview of the state of techno around the time of release. This mammoth six-LP set will give you a lot of music to work with, and it's featuring a dizzying cast of high-end operators starting with the mighty Stephen Brown. Each track gets a side of vinyl to itself, serving as a kind of statement for how much faith the label put in each of these 12 tracks. Amongst the best on this top-drawer comp are Daniel Avery's metallic, spellbinding 'Your Future Looks Different In The Light' and Carl Finlow's lithe electro workout 'Surface Control', but as you might well expect each track is one you'll turn to again and again to give your mix some spice.

Review: "The Box" is a collection of the earliest and perhaps most cherished recordings by UK producer Dennis Huddleston, better known as 36. Written between 2005 and 2012, it compiles the albums Hypersona (2009), Hollow (2010) and Lithea (2012) into a 6LP boxset, alongside a bonus LP of exclusive and unreleased tracks titled Orphans. Originally written as a triptych, The Box showcases an incredibly eclectic, deeply emotional range of tracks, bridged together by that optimistic melancholy, which has since become the hallmark of the 36 sound.

Review: American singer Eva Cassidy released Nighbird posthumously in November 2015. It came 19 years after her death and was recorded at the Washington club Plus Alley in 1996. Some of the tunes had already been released as part of a live album the same year but for this album the recordings have been remixed and remastered from the original tape. It has some big jazz standards such as 'It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)' and 'Fever' as well as eight tunes that were previously unheard at the time. An exceptional record from one of the best female jazz singers of all-time.

Review: The Asylum Albums is the latest in a string of long-planned archival re-issues of Joni Mitchell's globally adored work. Together with her late-manager, Elliot Roberts, the pair announced in 2020 that fans would have an opportunity to get their hands on some of the Canadian folk, jazz, pop and rock doyen's previously unreleased stuff, while also revisiting seminal albums.

Each box set in the series follows a similar format, with original albums packaged together with brand new artwork by Mitchell, with a second musical outing for each era containing things most of us have never heard before. The Asylum Years comprises the first four albums she released for Asylum Records, and is therefore part one of the exploration of that period - widely considered a seminal era for her sound.

Review: Royksopp declared their 2014 album The Inevitable End to be the last time they would release a traditional album, and after eight years they lived up to that promise this year with a new audio-visual approach titled Profound Mysteries. The first instalment appeared in April, while the second volume landed in late summer, and now coinciding with the appropriately epic conclusion to the series, the true believers can cop the entire collection as a six-LP box set which comes embellished with a 32-page booklet designed by Jonathan Zawada, featuring every part of the series and encased in a die-cut rigid slipcase. If you're a Royksopp devotee, this is the definitive edition you need in your life.

Review: UK producer Dennis Huddleston goes by the artist name of 36. He is a much-loved producer with a fine back catalogue which is investigated here with The Box, a new collection of his earliest and perhaps most admired works. They were all written between 2005 and 2012 and are drawn from albums such as 2009's Hypersona, 2010's Hollow and 2012's Lithea. The bumper six vinyl collection also features a bonus album, Orphans, of all new and previously unreleased tracks. There is a real depth of range and emotion to these tracks so it is no wonder the artist says they are some of the most personally cherished works he has written.

Review: It's hard to know whether to bother reviewing this release at all, or simply opt for the following summary: Depeche Mode, titans of synth and one of the UK's most important bands of the late-20th Century (and today), offer a vast collection of tracks from their 2005 album, Playing the Angel, remixed by a host of massive names from the dance and electronic world.

Still not convinced? OK, how about this - Depeche Mode x Jacques Le Cont, M83, Sasha, Tiefschwarz, Tiga, Michael Mayer, Metope, Alter Ego, Robag Wruhme, Goldfrapp, Telex and more. With so much happening and such variety on offer within, it's probably best to hit play on the lot and see what takes your fancy, smart money being on all of them. Either that, or just go with your gut and buy before you try.

Review: We've been treated to reissues of everything else from PJ Harvey's spectacular catalogue, so it's only right we get a chance to savour the deeper cuts that shape out the persona of the high priestess of alternative rock. Gathering together an exhaustive 59 B sides, demos and previously unreleased tracks, this six-LP box set takes us into the heart of Polly Jean's writing process, showing the raw power in the songwriting when it's just her voice and an overdriven guitar, and showing us the broader possibilities of songs which didn't make the cut for the studio albums. This is a true treasure of music getting the authoritative release she deserves.

Review: Renowned Sheffield synth-pop legends The Human League have assembled a new boxset, The Virgin Years. One of the most definitive acts of their era started out as an experimental electronic outfit before their third album Dare took them to wider commercial success. It was one of four albums they released on Virgin Records, all of which are included here on new coloured wax. It includes standout tunes like 'The Things That Dreams Are Made Of', 'Don't You Want Me' and 'Rock Me Again and Again and Again and Again and Again and Again (Six Times).' It's an essential compendium for all fans.

Review: There are various eye watering stats about the many, many million copies of this album that have been pressed and sold. For each one sold there is almost as many different versions of it, too, if you look on Discogs. But all the hype and huff aside, there is a reason it is one of jazz's most famous records. The sultry modal moods, the masterfully melancholic trumpet sounds Davis conjures and the noir, late night vibe are all perfectly realised and universally understood. Without it, music at large, let alone jazz, would sound very different. For real fans, this super deluxe, clear vinyl pressing is the one and only you need.

Review: This is a truly bumper and completist collection of work from Ontario producer, singer and songwriter Partynextdoor that brings together all four studio albums across six sides of vinyl. Most notably, the debut Partynextdoor album is included having never before been available on vinyl, which will be big news for diehard fans. It is now a decade since that breakout debut was released with singles like 'Over Here' and 'Break From Toronto' soon making their mark and establishing his sound. In the ten years since, he has gone on to produce for or write with Drake, Nipsey Hussle, Rhianna and Post Malone amongst many more.

Review: Ryan Adams is a man of many faces, and talents. Capable of tearing his own heart out to pen achingly beautiful songs, seemingly written in his own blood, he has a clear understanding of the human condition and how to tap into our most fragile moods and moments. Nevertheless, he remains a controversial character off-stage, from sexual harassment allegations - and his subsequent apologies - to reports of angry voicemails on critics answering machines and asking fans to leave gigs for 'rude outbursts'. Still, his show at New York's iconic Carnegie Hall on 14th May 2022 saw a packed house gather to listen to his work, which this recording offers a wonderful insight into. Stop-you-dead moments are here in abundance, while his clear rapport with fans - on this occasion at least - also stands out. A masterclass in alternative acoustic rock, informed by country sensibilities, listening through hits like 'New York, New York' and 'Come Pick Me Up', alongside deeper fare such as 'Romeo & Juliet' and a cover of Black Sabbath's 'The Wizard', only emphasises what one-man tour de force he is.

Review: When it was first released, George Michael's Older was something of a shock to those who were used to his chart-topping hits of yore. Certainly, 1990's Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was a mature and expansive album from one of pop's brightest talents, but six years later Older took a moodier turn on tracks like 'Jesus To A Child' and 'Spinning The Wheel'. There are of course some big bangers too, from the slinky funk of 'Fastlove' to 'Star People', but this was a turning point in Michael's career which finally delivered the creative freedom he'd always so vically called out for. This expansive special edition of the album comes with additional edits, remixes and unreleased tracks to complete the picture for a landmark slice of British pop music.

Review: Karen Dalton was an American folk singer linked to the Greenwich Village set in the 60s. She might not have received the widespread recognition of some of her peers, but she left a mark for those who know with the spectacular In My Own Time. Her cracked mid-range vocal delivery was a vital part of her charm, floating somewhere between tender and tough, and backed up with an appropriately stirring yet gritty ensemble of electric guitar, winsome violin and shaky organ. This Super Deluxe Edition of the dusky, hard-bitten downhome country blues classic features a double LP pressing, bonus double 7"s, a CD and a 20-page booklet and poster.

Review: Song Cycle Records has put together a collector's edition box set of the Solaris original soundtrack as realised by Russian composer Edward Artemiev, who was once a member of the legendary Experimental Studio of Electronic Music in Moscow. Andrey Tarkovsky's masterpiece film from 1972 is a cosmic epic with a soundtrack to match thanks to its many eerie synthesiser sounds and lo-fi, alien ambient atmospheres. The pair also worked on Mirror (1975) and Stalker (1979), but Solaris might be their best, as this compelling box set proves.
