Tears Dry On Their Own (3:08)
Review: A collection of remixes that take the original Amy track and transform it into a dance-oriented experience. The Alix Alvarez Sol Channel mix on the A-side is a house remix that adds a driving beat and energetic synths. In contrast, the Al Usher remix on the B-side takes a more soulful approach, infusing the track with a 1970s vibe. Two remixes that showcase the versatility of the original song and offer a fresh take on Winehouse's iconic vocals.

Review: Not many people could call an album Genius and get away with it but you'd be hard pushed to find anyone who disagreed that Detroit beatmaker J Dilla wasn't just that . His beats shaped a whole sound and scene when he first emerged and he is still just as revered many years after his death. He worked on various projects and put out plenty of solo material but her we're presented with another top collection of early cassette recordings. There are all his trademark dusty beats, soulful samples, dreamy melodic motifs and more to be enjoyed here.

Review: Jinn April is a South Korean born, now Detroit based artist who moved to the Motor City in pursuit of the music she loves. She has since established herself in the city as DJ PIA with sets at all the right venues and a cross-genre style that is the norm for the originators in the Mid West. Now comes her own self released first EP, and it's a fine one. "Heal Myself N Moving On" is raw, unapologetically rough house with hi hats, gauzy chords, wooden hits and knackered kicks all chucked into a loose mix and allowed to evolve on their own. "Somewhere Deep In My Heart" is another ramshackle mix of odd melodies and detuned jazz, while "Reincarnation" is a melange of keys and chords, occult synth sounds and icy hi hats that is purely experimental and "You Can Do It Baby" ends in similarly singular fashion. This is exactly the sort of unusualness you would expect of an artist who has established herself in Detroit.

50/Fifty
120 Flashback
Review: Stunning warehouse find of the first ever Mr Roy release! These three South Londoners really knew their house music back then and have left us with some serious bangers, which still sound as fresh as ever! Title track "You Know" is a cheeky reinterpretation of Earth People's classic "Reach Up To Mars", with Mr Roy retuning those famous strings to form a powerful club bomb which just keeps on building. Over on the B Side, "50/Fifty" is a raw, acidic beatdown number which sounds surprisingly versatile and ahead if its time; followed by "120 Flashback", another timeless party tune geared up with crunchy Roland drum machines and a heavy, house bassline. Get them while they last.

Nature Of The Soul
Got To Be Right
Riding On Light
Even So
Review: Over the course of 2012, LA based producer Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker aka Gifted & Blessed aka GB has been stealthily responsible for some of our favourite releases at Juno, be it the self released and brilliantly presented EP The Provider or his return to All City with the vintage Detroit electro flex of Seven In Twenty Four or the all too on point Eglo emission The Abstract Eye. The Steoples project done in collaboration with fellow West Coast musician A Race Of Angels surfaced earlier this year and glowered with the kind of resonating warmth you would expect when Reyes-Whittaker's music is complemented by the angelic yet fragile vocal refrain of his studio partner. Despite originally being restricted to the digital domain, tracks such as "Nature Of The Soul" seem tailor-made for sliding across a slab of wax so it's great to see The Steoples EP finally get a 12" release. Such delays haven't dampened the impact either, which is a clear sign of timeless music. Along with the aforementioned "Nature Of The Soul" - a scratchy concoction of house-not house rhythms, sweet keys and swirling basslines tailor made for the vocal - the duo preside over plump and wonderfully melodic analogue beatdown excursions which bode well for future material The Steoples are apparently working on.

Review: In the week where Soma remind us of the potency of Scott Groove's 98 bump "Mothership Connection" the Detroit fixture launches his own new imprint in fine if somewhat sparse style. There's little more to the first Scott Grooves White Label Of The Month than the music itself - with both tracks presented here untitled - leaving the arrangements to speak for themselves. The A Side presents a whirlish take on Motor City Soul futurism, all bottom heavy bass and stripped down percussion leaving the utopian synth patterns to provide the personality, which they do in style. Head to the B Side for the real basement jam business as gloopy bass swirls drags the drum machine workout down to your ankles to let the acid tinged lead tease your senses in. The unexpected explosion of sonic colour will truly delight.

Honey (Glenn Underground remix)
Review: Serious house business here from veteran Glenn Underground (real name Glenn Crocker), who's previously hard-to-find remix of "Honey" gets a timely repress on one-sided, hand stamped vinyl. The Chicagoan producer - who also works under the Jaz Unit and CVO monikers - has been in the game for more than two decades, so it should come as little surprise to learn that he knows his way around a groove. "Honey" is one of his finest moments, a sugar sweet sojourn through deep, melodic house music with Erykah Badu's delicious R&B-infused vocals sitting beautifully over the top of it all. Essential.

Review: Alaska has finally taken the step to start his own label after 30 releases on various labels including Good Looking, Renegade Recordings, 720 Degrees, Offshore and Vibez. The recently released Alaska long player 'Arctic Foundations' on 13 Music has pushed the mid-90's ambient Alaska sound back into the DnB fold, so what perfect time to reveal ARCTIC MUSIC for all those who love real music. Every release will be white vinyl keeping in the Alaska vein and promises to stand the test of time in this world of stilton and blue DnB cheese. 'Ancestral' resurrects a doorway closed tightly back in the late 90's for ambient DnB lovers. Layers of pads and reverse bell tones lay the underscore with high-pass choirs and old-skool bleeps reminiscent of the Dj Crystl days. A breakdown that sends shivers of the past into 2006 introduces the wide picture of Ancestral. Enjoy!. 'Shiver' is a roller with a tight break that carrys the track with its punch perfectly. The mood of Shiver is comparable to something out of Stanley Kubrick's 2001 - an ambient but cold mood that you cant quiet place your finger on. Sub bass booms and eerie film samples about the past once again highlight the intention of AM001. Sometimes in order to go forward you have to look back.

Gregory Porter - "On My Way To Harlem" (radio edit) (4:40)
Review: NDATL owner Kai Alce has been responsible for some of the most musically expansive deep house of recent years, so you'd expect this sneaky double-album of previously unheard revisions to be pretty darn hot. It is, of course, with Alce offering up sublime takes on tracks by modern greats Kamasi Washington and Gregory Porter. Check first his gently breezy and sun-kissed Latin house take on Washington's "Askim", before reveling in the hot-stepping jazz-funk/Afro-house fusion of Alce's revision of Porter's "On My Way To Harlem". Over on the second disc, Alce offers alternative instrumental and edited versions of these headline-grabbing remixes. The "Thundercat Dub" of "Askim" is particularly alluring, though we've also been enjoying the ten-minute, solo-heavy "Extended Instrumental" of "On My Way To Harlem". Superb.

This is their second album and one that brings together various recording sessions done in Texas over the past 5 years. "Nightclub Foot" is a hiccupping mix of wave styles and hypnotic electronics, "Stammer Time" is unhinged techno experimentation and "Symbionese Take Out" is crunchy noise slowed to a paranoid and dystopian crawl. Dark and gloomy yet fascinating and filled with sound worlds you want to explore, "BW 05" is another wining effort.

Review: There's been little information released about this three-track EP, though we do known that it's the work of "a classic US label going incognito". Whatever the source, what counts is the quality of the music; happily, the EP is impeccable. Leading the charge is Karizma, whose remix of Flacko's "Lonely Town" is a breezy, soft-focus chunk of modern soul/broken house fusion smothered in hazy synthesizer chords and slowly strummed Latin guitar breakdowns. DJ Kemit dances towards peak-time floors with a wonderfully emotion-rich house version of jazz pianist Robert Glasper's "Enoch's House" built around similarly tropical drums, while KZRekchampma's glorious flipside club revision of Guy's "Groove Me" sits somewhere between bass-heavy UK house, soul-powered New Jersey garage and revivalist synth-boogie.

Review: Amadou et Mariam is a Malian duo made up of Mariam Doumbia (vocals) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals). They are a couple and both are blind musicians who met at Mali's Institute for the Young Blind. They came together through a shared love of music and have put out no fewer than 15 albums. 'Baara' from 2009 on Sacred Rhythm proved one of their biggest hits and now fetches high sums on Discogs. This reissue is a welcome one featuring the title track - a joyous mix of live afro drumming, vocal chants and freewheeling melodies, and the touching 'Ja Pense A Toi,' with its pained male leads, desert blues and aching guitar solos. Lovely stuff.

Review: Despite scouring the Internet for the best part of an afternoon, we've been unable to identify the producer (or producers) behind "Keep Your Mouth Shut 1", an anonymous but quietly impressive four-track EP. While the untitled psychedelic techno shuffler that opens the EP sounds like a peak-time jam in the making, the cut that follows (simply titled "Track 2" here) is an exotic broken techno affair that makes superb use of raw, acid-fired sub-bass and haunting, almost child-like vocal samples. There's more hybrid fun to be found on the flip, where a driving breakbeat cut comes wrapped in shimmering, summery chords ("Track 3"), and a high-octane, acid-fired electro jam threatens to whisk us off to a deep space destination unknown.

Let The Music Play
So Special
Review: The mysterious Blue Baboon making his debut with this delicious electro-house revision of the 80s dance classic by Shannon. This could be one of the best "Let The Music Play" bootlegs ever. An acid-friendly, bass-heavy thumper of dubbed out vocals, nasty synth lines and a heavy dose of club energy. Very much a big-time floor-filler here. On the flip you've got another classic r&b dance jam getting a fresh 2006 makeover.

Review: Ryan Leslie's 1600 SAT's and outstanding academic record got him, at age 15, into Harvard, where he spent his time messing around with drum machines and cultivating an image as a "thugged-out Lothario". Like most aspiring producer/songwriter/singers, Ryan Leslie started out making his own records as a teen because he couldn't afford to pay for studio time. Counting self-contained producer/artists like Stevie Wonder and Prince as his heroes, it's been a long ride from being a 19-year-old senior in college who had no music contacts - to overseeing studio sessions with the likes of Diddy, Usher, Britney Spears, and many other of today's top stars.

Review: As a member of the legendary Flipmode Squad, Rah Digga's rap is bouncing off the walls on this cover of the Marvin Gaye classic "Sexual Healing". It takes the song to a whole new level! The remix is already causing proper dancefloor damage around the globe by all major players on the circuit.

Here I Come (6:53)
The Chi (4:45)
Review: Also known as Belizian Voodoo Priest, Miggedy and Steve Maestro, the somewhat mysterious Mortimer Snerd III makes a first appearance with this cool slab of single-sided wax. We're talking sample-focused house heaters here, with lead track 'Here I Come' being especially feisty. Riding an old funk loop and jacking it up with a rabble-rousing stomp, it's a simple but utterly effective damager to get people pushing themselves harder. 'The Chi' is a deeper affair which scatters its source material across a moody, bass-heavy arrangement for those teasing moments in the mid-section of a set.

Review: Max Tannone hails from New York City and is a producer behind several well-known mash up albums in which he takes well-known bars from hip-hop history and places them over all new beats. This one, Ghostfunk, finds Ghostface Killah and others rapping over African vintage funk sounds. It's a beguiling mix with lively beats and plenty of organ chords, tumbling drums and Afro patterns all bubbling below the ionic verses. This one comes on a nice pink marbled slab of wax and brings a whole new perspective to music by the Killah.

Review: Stones Throw bring you Med's 'Special'. Never released on any of his albums, this rare white label from 2004 features production by Madlib and guest vocals by Erykah Badu. A quick sell-out when first released and often bootlegged since, this is the "official" Stones Throw repress, but it won't be around for long so don't be caught sleeping again. Includes vocal & instrumental versions.
