Review: 'Brat' is Charlotte Emma Aitchison's sixth studio album as Charli XCX, the follow-up from her "sell-out era", 2022's 'Crash' which topped multiple charts and gave the British pop singer a newfound notoriety that she had long been deserving. Review: Loaded is The Velvet Underground's second-most lauded album, after their scratch-n-sniffable debut LP. Among other things, it's also a cornerstone in the genre of extremely literal rock album covers, depicting a velvet red smoke wafting from an underground railway station. The album's title was an allusion to the fact that it was intended to be an appealing record, solely for radio play, hence it being 'Loaded' with hits. Glorious gems such as 'Sweet Jane' bound forward with TVU's usual euphemistic, ironic optimism, and this reissue is sure to nail the LP's full-bodied sound once more.

Review: FKA Twig's Caprisongs was the English singer-songwriter's debut mixtape back in January of last year. It's an accomplished trail through a wealth of different sounds and styles from neo-soul to trap, r&b to hyper-pop, Afro-beats to electronic abstraction. The album features spoken words intertwined between the tunes and that helps add personality to what is a captivating flow of grooves. Twigs's voice has great range as she goes from all-out sonic weirdness to melancholic angel to pop princess. Microbeats, plucky harps and music boxes add to the vibrant prediction of this most contemporary and future-sounding album.

Review: Pedestrian Verse is a critically acclaimed album by Frightened Rabbit, whose rapidly blooming career was cut short by the death of singer Scott Hutchison in May 2018. It has now been a full decade since the band dropped the mini-masterpiece and so it gets remastered at half speed and reissued by Atlantic with the full and original 12-track album on LP next to a bonus 12" with 11 extra tracks. This was the band's fourth studio album and the only one to feature guitarist and keyboardist Gordon Skene. The record is inspired in part by a break up and finds each of the members of the band stepping up their contribution to the songwriting. It's a great piece of modern indie history.

Review: American singer and songwriter Janelle Monae dropped her second album The Electric Lady back in 2013 and it was a fine follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut she broke through with in 2010. Critics again fawned over its songwriting and progressive soul style with influences of hip-hop, gospel, jazz, rock, pop and reggae. Dystopic cyborg concepts again defined the album with genre experience and plainspoken words exploring plenty of personal and emotional territory with guest appearances from high-profile names such as Miguel, Erykah Badu, Solange and Prince.

Review: Despite keeping to their pattern of releasing records on a triennial basis, 'A Deeper Understanding' shows that The War On Drugs have neither been slacking nor lost momentum in the long wait. Following 2014's stunning and ardently introspective 'Lost In The Dream', the new album sees Adam Granduciel and co. continue to explore themes of loneliness within the framework of their cinematic Americana sound. Highlights such as the euphoric catharsis of 'Holding On' and the pensive 'Strangest Thing' are evidence of a beautifully accomplished album by a group who appear to be gaining a deeper understanding not only of the experience of pain, but of who they are as a band.
