Review: The prolific ambient producer Zake (Zach Frizzell) has his latest release out for out us to enjoy. B4 Plus 3 features seven compositions in all. Many of them are brilliantly done drone pieces that are expressive in beautifully done tones that rise and slide. The heavenly 'Braken' as the opener for example. The layered tones creatively mask the depth of the drones to the point of a spontaneous feel that is almost changed by anything as slight as a light wind. 'Betrayal' present bells that ring out from the meandering depth while 'Blight' is deep and foreboding tot he point of being machinelike. 'Bane' is one of the most moving pieces in drone we have heard in a long, long time. Limited to only 50 cassettes in total (+download code), act fast to get the brilliant, peaceful and moving B4 Plus 3.

Review: ASC returns with a deeply emotive album on Past Inside the Present, showcasing a new chapter in his musical journey. Known for his versatility across electronic and drum & bass genres, James Clements channels introspection and healing in Loss. Quiet bird calls and field recordings intertwine with ASC's expertly crafted synths, creating a therapeutic sonic landscape. Each track evokes a range of emotions, from melancholy to hope, acceptance to sorrow. Loss invites listeners to embark on a poignant journey, where ASC's mastery shines through in every moment. It's a captivating and beautiful testament to the power of music as a form of self-expression and healing.

Review: Dwell Time II is the second part of a three-part project on Past Inside The Present from T.R. Jordan. Each of the albums was made using the same material in the same time frame, and they are all part of one overarching and coherent suite that he refers to as "musical composting." This is the cassette tape version and it is full of grainy, fluttering howls, soft warbling pads, pastoral references like flowing streams and mossy rocks and plenty of grand spatial elegance that harks back to the likes of Hiroshi Yoshimura and early Brian Eno experiments. Another immersive offering from this fine label, then.

Review: Previously re-issued on a black sleeve, this comes back to us in a full picture sleeve. This one is a specialty album that has a great mixture of breaks, beats and is one of the rarest released Shadow's LP's to grace the vinyl medium. This is one of the records that started it all and before the 'Solesides' releases, put Shadow's name out there. Never officially released, this is a must for you Shadow collection! Review: Somebody left the gate open... The Wytches' label describe them as 'swampy', and there's something in that term. Known to those who know as a rock band that lunge, wobble and ooze in equal measure, it's easy to picture some beast or other slowly emerging from the quagmire whenever you're tuning in, and Three Mile Ditch is doing that reputation no disservice.

Scuzzy, slimy and frequently screaming hard rock 'n' roll that sounds like it's about to bust a gut before descending into an even sleazier and deeper version of itself, so much of what's here could be dubbed an earworm by the time the halfway point arrives it's hard to know which way you came in, let alone where the exit is. Don't worry though, getting lost amongst the grooves and grind is a joy in itself.

Review: Clouds Without Water is a project that came about after the chance meeting of two ambient experimentalists. They were both in attendance to perform at the same electronic music festival but came together over their shared love of Bristol Sound. Working over long distances and through the isolation of the pandemic, they sent tracks to each other "without plans or discussion, only wordless questions buried in the music." What resulted was this album, which evokes celestial dreams, moon-lit otherworldly landscapes and plenty of deep introspection. It is space music for spacing out to.

Review: Wisconsin-based Wavefiler aka Steve Zydek and Vermont-based Go Outside aka Andrew Shaffer have a shared respect for one another's work as well as a personal friendship beyond music and that is what brought them together for this new EP having first met over Instagram. They started by sharing textural washes and snippets of melody with one another and then as the comms progressed they decided to work on a proper album as "audio penpals". Each track was written and finished before the next one was started and was then used as inspiration going forwards. It lends these lush ambient sounds a real sense of narrative.

Review: US-based Mystery Circles is the next stop for Hiroshi EBINA following a previous outing here last year. This new cassette is another beautifully organic ambient soundscape with delicate pads and a sense of quiet hope and atomism. The beauty of the album cover really portrays the majesty of the music within as gentle chords linger in the air above warm and fuzzy drones. Some pieces are more empty that others which only lends the appearance of a wispy pad all the more weight while some grow in stubby intensity as sounds are layered up and draw you in ever deeper.

Review: Bicep's second album is shaped by the experience of touring their debut long player for something like three years, a period during which they honed and perfected their instinct for tracks that would stand the test of time and repeated listening. What develops is a distinctive style typified by a combination of ethereal sonics and cheeky, memorable instrumental hooks, only set to a variety of beats that reference and indeed fuse the plethora of different dance genres that have sprung up since the acid house revolution if the mid-80s. So we get everything from the electro-tainted 'X' to 'Rever', where an African choir floats over a subtle deep house shuffle and 'Saku', where UKG bass pressure and skippy beats provide a hypnotic background for Clara La San's sweet but ghostly voice.

Review: Is there another artist around with such a singular vision as Jay Glass Dubs? While there's more than likely to be a few, it's certainly true that the Bokeh Versions regular has an opaque, mind-altering trademark ambient dub sound noticeably different from his peers. It's at the heart of his latest release, a short-run cassette for The Tapeworm that effectively applies his trippy "sound soup" style to the DJ mix. The two 20-minute tracks are not mixes in a traditional sense, but rather drifting, effects-laden collages featuring samples and snippets from not only his recordings, but also those from a wide range of obscure and well-known artists from across the musical spectrum, making for wonderful horizontal listening.

In February, our wish was granted in CD form and, and now, 'The Highlights' has seen an official rerelease on cassette, doing retro-justice to The Noise's cosmic collabs with Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar and Ariana Grande. Spanning cuts all the way through from 'Thursday' to 'After Hours', this album does a remarkable job of unifying the best tracks from this devilishly suited, R&B hitmaker's career.

Review: The Number of the Beast was Iron Maiden's third studio album. It came and made a huge impact in 1982 and that original version is the source for this 40th anniversary edition. It comes on cassette tape for extra nostalgic value and the chart topping tunes still carry plenty of weight today. One of them is their first UK top ten single, 'Run to the Hills,' which impressively managed to hit number 7 in the first week of March in 1982. Notably, it was also the first album form the rockers to have Bruce Dickinson on vocals.

Review: It is almost a decade since the last album from Placebo but finally fans get what they have been waiting for after so long, a nine studio long player from the perrenial indie favs. The album was written after main man Brain Molko found out his neighbours were dying on him and it set him off on a path of wonder about how our privacy has been eroded in the digital age. The record therefore tells a true to life story through a paranoid lens and displays a complete disgust from modern life. A narrator features throughout to heighten the concept and it makes for a big return to the fray.

Review: Freed from the usually harsh time constraints imposed on the band as a result of 2020's COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, Korn found themselves happily chipping away at a sound they'd always spearheaded on 'Requiem', albeit with much more freedom and time on their hands. Full of nu-metal pine and telephoned-in emo vocal drawls, this latest from the band contains more sprawling arrangements and experimentations in recording to analog tape. Don't think this is Korn going retro, though: it might as well be called nu-nu-metal, it sounds so fresh!

Review: Vital US ambient label Past Inside The Present welcomes Washington, D.C-based composer T.R. Jordan for a debut album that is focussed on the evolution "of personal relationships and the paths they take." The artist has formerly performed as The Greatest Hoax and here delves deep into contemporary classical and ambient music with a lo-fi feel and real sense of longing. The pads unfold slowly in gentle arcs, static drifts across the arrangements and muffled guitars peak through bleak clouds like little rays of hope. It is a work of subtle art and devastating emotionality.

Review: Having debuted in mid-2021 with a cassette-only mini-album, the admirable but hard-to-find Sell, mysterious, Atlanta-based ambient outfit The Lifted Index delivers its debut album proper on Past Inside The Present. Described by its creators as "a mediation on our interconnected world", Hosts of Living Form was reportedly inspired by a combination of the life cycle of plant life (in their words, "death, decay, decomposition, growth"). Musically, it's a quietly picturesque affair in which ambient electronics, crackling aural textures, effects-laden pianos and the Duratti Column style guitar sounds ebb and flow to create fluid, organic soundscapes. It's all quietly impressive, but at its finest - such as on 'In Stones & Trees, The Bones of Things', and the lilting 'Eluvium Repose' - the album is genuinely breath-taking.

It is a record of real ambient depth that opens with an uplifting piece riddled with joyous melody, heavenly harmonies and a hurried implied rhythm. There is more murk and emotional heaviness to 'Aligned' while 'The Hot July Moon' widens the sonic horizons and has you gazing off into space. 'Your Only Great Affirmation' is pure suspense, with long-held chords locking you in to a meditative state. 'Murmur' closes on a similar tip, but hurried deep within is a subtle sense of optimism.

Review: As if The Exploited's iconic debut album needs any introduction, 'Punks Not Dead', served less as a title and more of a rallying cry and reactionary throat-punch to those who looked down their noses at the scene, regarding it as a flash in the pan movement. Establishing the Oi-punk attitude as an essential component, delving into anti-establishment and anti-army topics, as well as laying the groundwork for a plethora of vital acts to come, if ever there was a list of quintessential, integral punk records, this would reside atop of the scuzzy mountain.

Review: zake, best known for his work on the prolific Past Inside The Present label that he co-founded, lines up with esteemed soundtrack wizard James Bernard and Marc Ertel, whose work centres on the healing, restorative powers of music. The album for Florina Cassettes boasts five tracks that veer on the grander end of the ambient scale - big, airy, blustery mini-symphonies that blow out the cobwebs, from opening tune 'Protector Of The Night' to closer 'Who Hath Listened'. If there is a moment of respite, it's the midway point, 'Sustained Beath', way more static and calm than the tracks it intersects. It's still filled with drama and emotion, as everything here does.

Review: A new double cassette box from Past Inside The Present, which sees its co-founder zake in relatively rare solo mode mixing soothing ambient sensibilities with orchestral, classical influences. 'Dernier Souffle (Pt 1)' is a great example of how the two can meld very easily and comfortably, a sense of slowly retreating heartache creeping over its open, slabs of floating sounds, whereas the three parts of 'La Paix Eternelle (Pt 1), on the other hand, evoke heavenly choirs of angels. An album with its head in the clouds, for sure, but once you join it there you won't want to come down.

Review: With a title referring to an underreported aerial incident above the Willamette Valley, when a mysterious fireball soared through the atmosphere and disappeared into the light of the rising sun, Strategy aka Paul Dicklow from Portland embarks on his third outing for the LA label Peak Oil, albeit his first for eight years. Dicklow describes this album as both a "love letter to the myriad strains of breakbeat house", and "a specific attempt to grapple with iconic samples in a kind of archaeological dissection", but results are neither as lairy and straightforward as the first definition, nor as academic and dry as the second attempt to sum it up. Rather, we get a wonderfully frisky style of electronica that is informed by classic beats and samples but finds a way to re-invent them for the 21st century rather than simply roll them out the way you'd expect. 'Bassmaker', for instance, takes a very famous hip-hop sample, loops it and weaves it into the sonic fabric of the track until you forget it's even there. 'Bug Bongo' has a madcap keyboard line that's like Luke Vibert on speed, bursting with cheeky wit. 'Inside The Pyramid' is possibly the album's natural climax, Amen breaks and nostril-tweaking sub-bass, but everything here is what too much electronica tends not to be, namely full of personality and human touches. Quite, quite, loveable.

Review: Esteemed ambient auteurs, zake and ossa's collaborative output continues to soothe and delight in equal measure. After Syntheticopia in August 2022 and the dark long-player 'A Pale Shelter' in 2021 between zake, ossa, and City of Dawn comes Module, a collaboration that includes seasoned electronic producer Ruben A. Tamayo, under the alias FAX. The power trio brings forth an eight-track excursion into heavy ambient atmospheres with moody soundscapes and a real weight of melancholy. As always, the textures are grainy and lo-fi, the drones long-held, and the chords which poke through the clouds, bring subtle rays of hope and optimism. It is the latest and maybe the greatest chapter in this ongoing story from zake and ossa with featured collaborators.

If the average ambient album has its head in the clouds, this is more grounding, more gamboling in the fields perhaps than floating in the ether, with gentle flute and guitar giving the walls of synth sounds some perspective. That said, the closing track of the four, 'Retract R (Type K)', sizzles away like something by Growing or even Spaceman 3 left to fry in the sun. Magnificent stuff..

Review: 'An Orchestral Suite For Tape' is a compilation specifically curated for playback on the noble cassette tape format, featuring orchestral arrangements by Texas-Indiana duo zake & City of Dawn. Including songs from four albums and one compilation, the first time these tracks have been available on tape, the mood is deep and meditative, the billowing clouds of synthesisers providing ample space for thought and relaxation alike.

Review: Ambient composer and improviser Tom Leclerc shares a series of moments with WILD in which the pair experiment and go off grid in their search for immersive ambient sounds. All of the session for this album on Giraffe Tape sharpened in the same day with a stripped back studio set up featuring minimalist synths and pedals. Both artist's own restive sounds meet in a new world where distant cosmic winds gently blow over pastural chord sequences. There is subtle movement in these tracks, some of which are darker and heavier than others which have more light, hope and joy.

Review: Past Inside The Present co-founder Isaac Helsen - a multi-disciplinary artist from Michigan, creating photography and paintings as well as music - in action on this double cassette alone after a string of collaborations with labelmate 36 and fellow label co-founder zake. Helsen's sound works on a grand (electronically) orchestral scale at times, the proverbial cathedrals of sound coming to mind, at others (see 'Duniskwalgunyi') understated and intimate. On first listen, it's the simpler moments like 'Whisper At A Party' that grab you, but the 17 track selection slowly reveals itself to be quite special on repeated rotations.

Review: Past Inside The Present go big with this Winter 2022 Deluxe Boxset across three cassette tapes. It's a superb showcase of the talents on their roster and includes a collection of music made by Italian composer Sofia degli Alessandri-Hultquist aka Drum & Lace between 2016 and 2019. There is also an album by London-based Will Bolton which finds the "beauty in ruins, decay and the details and textures of everyday scenes" and an album from People Galan and David Cordero which saw the pair send sound fragments back and forth over the internet and develop them until they both liked what they heard. It all adds up to a brilliant snapshot of some of ambient's best current practitioners.

Review: Unfurled Works is a collection of back-catalogue zake tracks that have been lengthened for this new cassette, which is a slow-moving cascade of ambiance that washes over you in a delightful fashion. It's an album of frayed edges and lo-fi production, of dream-like haziness and heart-warming subtlety. The five carefully layered tracks on it slowly and stylish shift from one to another with meditative pads and organic drones that are gently peppered with sombre keys. Some pieces are light and airy, others are more moody and heavy, and all of them are perfect for daydreaming and re-setting your mood. Silence takes on all new potency and the beauty of the barely-there grows ever more striking.

Review: Brock Van Wey hails from the Bay Area but his BVDUB project is known worldwide. It sees the American provide a near-constant stream of innovative ambient music on the Past Inside The Present label - this new double album comes just a couple of months after his last one, Fumika Fades, but is essential once more. There are plenty of intense and heavily textured tracks as well as more empty and escapist pieces with heavenly melodies and subtle vocals worked into to dreamy effect. As always he serves up the album in various formats and this is the double cassette version which lends itself to the lo-fi aesthetic perfectly.

Review: The debut studio album from East Coast hip-hop group De La Soul, 3 Feet High & Rising, initially released in 1989 by Tommy Boy Records, returns to record store shelves thanks to Chrysalis. The first of three collaborations with the producer Prince Paul, the album contains the iconic singles 'Me Myself and I', 'The Magic Number', 'Buddy', and 'Eye Know', and is widely considered one of the greatest rap albums of all time. Veering masterfully between a playful, comic register, whilst still deeply engaged in late 80s US politics, particularly concerning the African American experience, this truly is an album that does it all. A real cornerstone for any hip-hop lover's record collection.

Review: Experimental guitarist and composer Carlos Ferreira is inspired by how we listen to music and the singer between sound, space, time and memory. He's dropped ambient gems on the likes of Past Inside The Present and Modern Obscure but here serves up a superb cassette on Mystery Circles. Across eight pieces he concurs up a range of feelings from rose-tinted nostalgia on the beautifully tender opener 'The Light We Lost' to more uplifting feels on 'A Pile Of Thoughts' (feat Fu_k The Zeitgeist). 'Organism' has delicate vocal whispers from Patricia Wolf that make it all the more heavenly and a second appearance feature from Fu_k The Zeitgeist on 'Primal' is another standout.

Review: Almanacs's new cassette for Mystery Circles finds the artist leaning heavily on the sounds of the indigenous music of his own Honduran culture. As well as that there are direct samples of punta and marimba music and its unique rhythmic structures, but all reworked through his own specific lens - a mix of minimalist, experimental and ambient music. It's an enchanting and escapist listen packed with real world detail. Even the title references that culture, as it is inspired by a speech from Berta Caceres, an indigenous and environmental activist who in 2016, was murdered by the government.

Review: Meg Mulhearn and Belly Full of Stars come together for this split release on which the former takes care of the first four tunes and the latter the other five. For her part, Mulhearn harnesses the power of fire and ice, sunshine and torrential rain in tracks that are occasionally gentle and sometimes harsh. The textures are fuzzy and grainy but synths and strings bring light and hope. Kim Rueger's Belly Full of Stars alias finds her going deep into subterranean worlds of cavernous sound detailed with the finest of wispy melodies on' Ebon Flow' while 'Perihelia' has a more organic and summery feel desire being so pressurised and tense. These are enchanting sounds for sure.

Review: G.Teixeira is an artist based in France and someone with a multi-faceted sound. His Almost Silent alias now turns out Undisclosed Fields Vol.1, a first release on Healing Sound Propagandist that takes the form of eight movements and six reworks. It's as dense as ambient gets, frankly, with heartbreaking melodies passing by and disappearing before your ears. Fizzing synth drones are layered up over crepuscular chords and the whole thing has you gazing off into the distance, your eyes glazing over as you happily get absorbed in the subtly shifting sounds, tones and timbres. This, then, is another high class album from both artist and label.

Review: You can always rely on zake to serve up some of the most magnificent ambient of the moment. He does it at an almost unbelievably frequent rate, too. This latest project is a seance part of the Orchestral Tape Studies series he minted back in 2019 and finds him paying homage to minimalist symphonic composers and orchestras through a series of pieces that focus on tone and timbre, with subtly shifting layers of carefully manipulated sounds, absorbing drones, field recordings and fragmented orchestral loops. Soundscapes shift subtly and manipulate your emotions just as deftly. This is a limited cassette version with several different vinyl versions also available.

This album's starting point was original concepts played out on guitar which were then processed and experimented with through an ages-old analog tape machine. Add in an array of iPad audio processing apps, samplers, and Ableton software and you have a perfect mix of tools to serve up a sonic journey that perfectly merges the old with the new. The resulting ambient soundscapes are immersive and sparse but packed with subtle details that convey all manner of emotions.

Pathways is his newest album and is another signature blend of deep techno, dub, and ambient sounds that explore fresh ground. This one comes on cassette - a fitting medium for his always hazy, lo-fi sounds, and opens with a gorgeous stargazer loosely tethered to a dreamy groove. 'Movement' is just much of a cosmic floater, 'Accident' has static electricity fizzing about an underwater chamber and 'Through' is a slow-motion dubscape. 'Exodus' and 'Calm' close out this beautifully unhurried exploration of the deep.

Kokubo's traditional Japanese instrumentation defines the work as it sweeps you up and transports you to someone that is serene and introspective. Across four pieces here they do just that - each one unhurried and vast in sci, with delicate keys tinkling above yawning chords and spring day energies on 'Thousand Bells 1'. The second piece is a little warmer, with synth smears and distant breezes bring in all manner of elegant percussive sounds. Side two continues the exploration of the Far Eastern countryside on a sunny day in mesmerising and soothing fashion.

Review: Russian titan Monokle is back to once again traverse many different sound worlds with his new album Ultraflowers. It is one of a number of superb albums landing on Constellation Tatsu this summer and one defined again by its warmth. The title track is a lo-fi, scruffy and deep opener with persuasive breakbeats, while 'Glassy Eyed' is an ambient jungle trip that drips with watery melody. 'Night Objects' offers some introspection and 'Moths' is a glitchy future techno cut with smeared synth soul. '1000Work' layer sup more breaks with elegant ambient melodies and 'Predteche' casts you admit in the deepest corners of space.

Xu was on synthesizers while Kladis was in charge of samples, drums and loops on the SP-555 and the final touch was lo-fi drums from John Shaughnessy. It takes the form of two extended jams that reach out to almost 15 minutes of dusty, ambient-laced soundscapes with distant percussive details and melancholic moods. 'Klaxu' has more darkness and more prominent rhythms to it but both pieces make for escapist listening.
