Casino Classix (reissue)
Cat: IFACH 011. Rel: 26 Feb 24

Techno
Ringer (7:06)
Hoppa (2:45)
Hot Pot (6:01)
Beach Club (4:39)
Review: Casino Classix is one of several aliases for legendary minimal man Baby Ford. Here it is also the name of a four-track EP that finds the long time UK underground operative working alongside fellow British techno luminary Mark Broom on a quartet of devastating cuts. 'Ringer' opens up with some dark and nimble baselines darting about beneath a dense layer of percussion and FX. 'Hoppa' is then a more precise and minimalist cut with wonky bass snaking down low beneath the icy hi-hats and jumbled toms. There is a warm dub depth to 'Hot Pot' to kick off the flip and 'Beach Club' shuts down with a restless mix of synth daubs and deft percussion over an ice cold groove.

Klashjamz (4:44)
Showtime (4:32)
HighNRG (5:04)
Jazz Ting (4:57)
Review: Mark Broom is one of the mainstays of the global underground. The UK titan has a recognisable take on house and techno genre that is underpinned by slamming kick and that comes to bare once more now as he lands on fellow legend Radio Slave's Rekids label. These four cuts bring a more house feel to start with as 'Klashjamz' layers up disco strings and vocals into something joyous. 'Showtime' has a garage slip to the loopy, silky drum rotations and 'HighNRG' throws it back with big stabs, percussive drums and chopped up vocal shards. 'Jazz Ting' is an aptly named closer with plenty of steamy sax notes of raw, loopy grooves.

100% Juice (Sampler mix) (4:01)
Contigo (4:46)
Nod To The D (5:51)
Spiked (3:59)
Review: Following the release of his blisteringly heavy Funfzig album on Rekids last year, Mark Broom returns to Matt Edwards' imprint with a teaser for the hotly anticipated follow-up, 100% Juice. As you'd expect, there's no messing around from the UK techno veteran, with opener '100% Juice (Sampler Mix)' delivering a bowel-bothering, cranium-snapping blend of rave-igniting, minor key stabs, booming bass and stomping beats. In contrast, 'Contingo' is trippy in tone thanks to all manner of overlapping synth lines, while 'Nod To The D' sees Broom blend his own drum machine-driven take on techno with vintage Motor City sounds. Rounding off a rock-solid EP is 'Spiked', a raw and razor-sharp techno throb-job primed for peak-time floors.

Kos (6:00)
ZZZZ (4:13)
Track 4 (5:31)
F9 (4:16)
Review: On this latest drop on EPM, the steadfast UK techno label welcomes steadfast UK techno titan Mark Broom for a collaboration with Australian in Berlin Patrik Carrera. The result is four slices of no-nonsense jackhammers from two experts in the field, leading in with the edgy loops and bludgeoning kicks of 'Kos' and neatly stepping over to the shoulder-shaking pressure of 'ZZZZ'. 'Track 4' features one of those deadly chord stabs which just lands squarely between the eyes, while 'F9' rides the cymbals mercilessly and keeps an abundance of funk in the low end - pure dancefloor dynamite in action from two well-versed detonators.

DOD
Nel
Review: Two of UK techno's most reliable producers get straight to the point on Bites. Unlike The Fear Ratio project, this EP is all about the dance floor at 4am. The title track is an insistent roller, its concrete beats sounding like SP-X, but the series of break downs and chord builds coming across like that other ultra-functional new schooler, Psyk. "D.O.D" is more noisy and grinding, as splintered beats and fractured rhythms compete with ghostly chords for the listener's attention. "Nel", meanwhile, is dubbier and less uptempo, but don't let that fool you - the atonal, surging bass at its centre is tough enough to level a powerful sound system.

Mark Broom - "Vault 5"
Birds Two Cage - "Gase"
Patrick Graser - "From Foreign Territories"
Review: This sampler from Norman Nodge's new mix CD shows that the Berghain resident spends a lot of time searching out music that no one else has. The upshot of his approach is that Nodge creates a mood like no one else. From the mix opener, the gray-scale ambience of Birds Two Cage's "Gase", through the menacing builds of Mark Broom's "Vault 5" to newcomer Patrick Graser's "From Foreign Territories" - an insistent, bleep-heavy groove to rival Sleeparchive at his most austere - this taster release proves that when it comes to setting a menacing, spooky tone, no one can match Nodge.

The Future That Was
Black Lines
Review: Two of the UK's biggest techno gurus team up for three slices of no-nonsense, perfectly produced club tackle. The intriguingly titled "Erotic Misery" opens proceedings, with a granite hard techno thump complimented by frenetic hi-hats which perpetually build and build, while piercing synths arise slowly from deep inside the track's bowels. Flip over for the improbably deep "The Future That Was" and the raw, snappy "Black Lines". Fans of serious, heads down techno in the vein of Surgeon, Horizontal Ground, Ben Klock and Regis will be all over this.

Review: Techno cognoscenti Mark Broom and Gary Beck team up for some serious jams on Beard Man. Sprawled across the A Side is a Broom remix of Beck's "Luxar", a driving bomb that will please fans of Frozen Border and Sandwell District immensely. Broom's own "Redial" appears on the flip, which brings a more bouncey swagger to proceedings, with a shuffling groove riding deep beneath some rather nice sonar bleeps. Top release.

Frontline (5:16)
Frontline (Ben Long & Oliver Way remix) (5:40)
Review: The ever-versatile Mark Broom returns to his own label for a storming techno release. The title track revolves around a high-paced acid pulse, with the smart use of filters making it sound even more frazzled. Robert Hood repays the favour to Broom for appearing on his M-Plant label by delivering a heavy, visceral take on the title track, with the Detroit producer's signature metallic riffing and cast iron beats to the fore. Of a bigger surprise is Ben Long and Oliver Way's remix; although it's a high octane affair, the groove is pulsing and surprisingly fluid. Adding to this unexpected turn is Ben Long's 'late night' mix, where the veteran UK producer lays down a hypnotic, ambient pulse.

Review: All the secret weapons a techno DJ needs right now on one handy EP, courtesy of Netherlands-based EPM Music. The minister of techno himself Robert Hood is first up on EPM20 EP1, kicking off the A side with his idiosyncratic sound as always on the chiming and hypnotic cyclicality of 'Shadows', followed by Hardgroove chief Ben Sims who brings the polyrhythmic tribal funk as always on 'Xotnuc'. Over on the flip, UK veterans James Ruskin and Mark Broom appear, fresh off their recent Deadhand release, albeit separately. The former's contribution is the austere pressurizer 'There Was A Time' which ventures into truly ominous territory.

Review: The second instalment in Yossi Amoyal's Fluere compilation run brings further leftfield house and techno delights into one place, in honour of Sushitech's 15th anniversary. First up on this 12" is Baby Ford's impeccable remix of Jin Choi, which adds extra layers of drama to Ford's trademark minimal clicks and pops. Sten's 'Circles' is a pristine, dubby tech house workout, while Mark Broom's 'Gira' sounds all the better for a modern remaster 25 years after its original release. Edward's 'Sender' finishes the record off on a nervy, unsettled note where lingering off-key tones hover over a dense and twitchy minimal beat.

Review: James Ruskin and Mark Broom are tow of the most iconic names in techno. They are a dream team pairing and prove that once more with this collaborative four tracker on Ruskin's legendary Blueprint label. 'Pr1' is lithe but muscular, with rubbery kick drums pounding away beneath frazzled stabs that all work you into a state of hypnosis. 'Ocs' is another subtle and supple fusion of bendy synths and well cushioned kicks and 'Tkn' heads off down a loopy melodic minimal rabbit hole. 'Sn7' is the most rave of the lot with its undulating synths bringing texture to more cantering techno drums. Classy, effective, essential.

Review: After a quiet 2016 thus far Och's Autoreply label is finally back in action with a frankly fantastic selection of workouts from Mark Broom. In keeping with the style Broom has been exercising in new Perbec jams with Baby Ford, this is more restrained than the muscular techno Broom can also be known for. Instead, you get expressive, satisfying house tracks such as "18.2" and the neatly pumping "10" with its killer array of synths to satisfy the dancefloor and the mind in equal measure. Avoiding unnecessary fireworks in favour of perfectly chosen and shaped elements, this is a glittering demonstration of Broom's cool-headed approach in the studio.

TR1 (4:59)
Review: Hardgroove have released some serious names in the techno scene before now - the likes of Mella Dee, Borrowed Identity and Charles Green. It's no surprise considering Ben Sims is at the helm, and that equally explains the fact that the legendary Mark Broom has graced the label with his latest set of taut, main room club cuts. "Outta Sight" is a mean-tempered workout with a whiff of electro in the lead synth refrain, but it's not as outwardly malevolent as noisy juggernaut "L4LV". "Five/Four" has big room chords and massive splashing rides to get fists shaking - the consummate peak time belter. "TR1" takes things in a more dungeon-esque direction, using guttural rhythmic incisions to drag you into the depths of the night.

Review: Born out of the prominent London techno night with the same name, the Machine label launches in style with the Tribology compilation mixed by label and party co-founder Ben Sims, a lynchpin of the British techno scene. This first sampler from the exclusives-packed mix sees an all star cast offering up their hard-hitting wares in uncut form. Planetary Assault Systems is on searing form with "The Grinder" while Mark Broom's "The Peak" pings all kinds of raucous, discordant synth lines around the mix. Damon Wild has a more paranoid tint to his own fist-shaking banger, and Insolate rounds the record off with the stealthy, strafing tones of "Strike".
