Katsuya Sano - "I Need Luv" (6:18)
Junichi Soma - "Ubnormal Life" (5:19)
Shuji Wada - "Endless Load" (5:06)
Review: Rush Hour has been one of Europe's independent musical powerhouses for decades now. Now only does it have Amsterdam's best record shop, but it throws the best parties and puts put the fresh new records from several different genres. next to that of course they also know how to dig deep and unearth vital reissues, which is what they do here with a triple headed Japanese house affair. Katsuya Sano keeps it OG Chicago with his 'I Need Luv', then Junichi Soma offers the analogue depths of 'Ubnormal Life' and Shuji Wada shuts down with more brilliantly atmospheric sounds on 'Endless Load.'

I'm In Love (Caught Up version)
I'm In Love (instrumental version)
Review: Having given the Dream 2 Science album the wider audience it richly deserved earlier this year, Rush Hour dig out another NYC garage classic from the archives of Ben Cenac for a much deserved reissue. Unlike that album, this Sha-Lor record Cenac recorded in collaboration with vocalists Sharmelle and Lorrie back in 1988 gained wider success, becoming a Summer Of Love staple. It's not hard to see why "I'm In Love" proved so enduring on the A Side Caught Up mix either, with the duo's vocals still retaining a power to move some 24 years on, while Cenac's stripped back bass heavy production is NYC garage at its finest. This being Rush Hour, there's also the bonus of a previously unreleased instrumental version occupying the flip.

Review: Lars Bartkuhn sonically portrays his recent relocation to Brazil on his latest ambient / new age LP Dystopia. It's an ironic title for sure, since it hardly sounds like what we'd usually imagine a dystopia to sound like. Perhaps the LP's making could shed some light on this paradox; Bartkuhn's first solo LP for almost nine years, it was born out of two interlinked ideas: a desire to create improvised music without the aid of computer sequencers or an electronic drum set, and a deeply held love of storytelling through sound. It's this revelling in imperfection which perhaps makes the album 'dystopic' - bits like 'Largo' and 'Do You Know How To Get Out' are beautifully rhythmic and driving, despite their apparent lack of computerisation going into the process. Sonically, it's aquatic, malleting, tactile, bubbly, serene.

Review: Rush Hour Limited presents San Proper's "Amsterdam Family series". This is a series where he teams up with known and unknown producers from Amsterdam. Although new to the production game, San Proper has been DJing in the Amsterdam club scene for years. Over the last ten years he has been spinning in all the major clubs, bars and lounges in and around Holland. San is well known and praised for his house and disco sets as well as for blending a lot of different styles into an eclectic mix. On this 12", the second in the series, he collaborates with Tom Trago, who produced the well received "Live With The BBQ". They've created two mid tempo house burners, just the way we like them. While "Caterpillar Blues" is a upbeat discofied love affair, "Love Flue" is a haunting afro-disco flavoured groove. Thank you very much!

Review: "Six Track Sampler" on Rushhour is some highly recommended electronic funk. The Amsterdam based Comtron group was set-up four years ago to warn people about the sinister undertones of the corporate world. The group attach their message to their unique strain of punch driven, electric funk. Rumour has it that these industrious men made their fortune trading new media stock that, whilst making them rich, left them disillusioned and feeling exploited by the evil system they found themselves caught in.

Review: The third Rush Hour Direct Current release sees previous incumbents Cosmin TRG and Falty DL engage in some mutual back scratching activities with each remixing a standout track from the others RHDC EP. Falty DL turns the Romanian's "See Other People" into a crazed futuristic techno R&B hybrid - probably what a Kyle Hall remix of Kingdom would sound like. On the flip "St Marks Place" gets a truly menacing techno funky rerub from the Cosmin. Top release all round.

Assimilated (FaltyDL remix)
Detroit State Of Mind (Space Dimension Controller remix)
Review: Kyle Hall aside, it's hard to pick two up-and-coming producers better suited to the task of giving Anthony Shake Shakir's off kilter Detroitisms a contemporary tweak than FaltyDL and Space Dimension Controller. In the first of two Rush Hour-curated releases, Belfast youngster SDC, fresh off a stunning EP released on resurgent Belgian imprint R&S, turns his intergalactic remixing hand on the seminal "Detroit State Of Mind", first released in 1998. He slows down the tempo here, opting for slo-mo, bubbling synths, claps and a vintage analogue electro-disco funk melodies that are fast becoming the SDC signature sound. FaltyDL (real name Drew Lustman) meanwhile remixes "Assimilated" over on the flip. Despite being based in New York, Falty's sound has its roots in the UK, with his releases displaying a clear affection for dubstep, funky and old-school garage as well as house. On this effort he goes for a dense, layered approach, with snare hits busily chopping and changing direction amid a flurry of analogue squiggles, with a bassline groove that is slowed down, tweaked and generally messed with in an insouciant manner that would no doubt make Shakir smile. More than merely a nice idea for a remix project, this release serves as a neat snapshot of what electronic music is all about in 2010: a fertile breeding ground between genres, eras and continents, with one foot respectfully planted in the past and the other holding the door open for the future.

Review: Tom Trago is a busy man. Here he takes time out from finalising "Iris" his forthcoming album and the epic Alfabet project (a collaboration with Awanto3, one half of Rednose Distrikt) to lay down a promo-only single. "Shutters" is in many ways typical Trago fare. It boasts that huggingly soft, atmospheric production for which he's renowned, clever use of instrumental soul samples (particularly after the second breakdown) and a nagging, relentless live bassline. It's heavy pace and thumping groove combine with his wall of sound production to great effect, too. The impeccable Extended Version is joined by an Extended Dub, which strips some of the soul samples to give a simpler, late night feel.

Review: Tom Trago's voyage with "Voyage Direct" keeps on going and going, this time the journey continues as the Amsterdam DJ / producer unleashes two of his live versions.

Last year's seven track mini-album was received with much critical acclaim. It served as a reminder to many that house music can still be deep, raw, sexy and passionate. Following its success, two EPs followed with remixes from Motor City Drum Ensemble, Actress, Ardvarck or Sotu the Travller.

Now, Tom Trago goes back for another adaptation of the album one last time. Live Takes consists of outtakes from his live performances, as the title would suggest.

Opening with an extended disco version of "Use Me Again" this release bridges the gap between the studio and the live performance, between old and new. It shifts in and out of the original unassumingly, meandering between the two for over eight minutes. Rather than just your straight up re-edit, this version is more akin to a new, modern version of the original.

The flip side is much more club orientated. An exclusive from his live sets, here Tom strips the classic "Over and Over" right down to the minimum, only allowing the original groove to appear momentarily before the updated, Chigargo-esque rhythm takes over again.

These two tracks cover two shades of equally compelling disco house. First we get the deep and funky side from "Use Me Again" and then there is the more pumping, jacking style from "Over and Over." Either way, they both get the dancefloor rocking!

Review: Given his reputation for pioneering techno in the Netherlands in the '90s, it is no surprise a broad range of labels are looking to work with Steve Rachmad. Not soon after the man known as Sterac contributed a pair of remixes to an Aera 12" on the mighty Innervisions, Rachmad's earlier material is the subject of a reissue 12" on home turf titans Rush Hour. It's his mid-'90s work for Dutch techno label 100% Pure that is the focus of the Amsterdam operation's attentions here, specifically the cuts "Osirion" and "Primus." Issued together on a '96 12" on 100% Pure, both these tracks are not as widely feted as Sterac classics from the same era like "Sitting On Clouds" but they do demonstrate Rachmad's innate mastery of the Motor City sound. Remastered for 2016, they sound just as fresh some 20 years on!!

Review: With techno celebrating its 25th birthday in 2010, Rush Hour pick an opportune time to reissue some vintage Derrick May. Here we see four slabs of raw analogue machine funk from the outspoken producer and DJ - one under his Rhythm Is Rhythm alias, with three .relics' squeezed onto the B Side. "MS" predates the current vogue for stripped back house and techno music by some two decades, while the so-called .relics' on the flip offer a fascinating insight into May's nascent output. Simply put, this is a must for all Detroit completists and another opportunity to recognise the sheer importance of Derrick May in shaping the modern electronic music landscape.

Both these tracks were initially released on his own Art Of Dance label as a 12" only, limited to 300. While "Chasers" saw a reissue an Art Of Dance compilation album, "Track" was left exclusively to that 12" only (it had appeared earlier on his Warp album in a different version). I'm Cumming Baby
Review: Rednose Distrikt's Steven De Peven emerges from his producing slumber under this new alias with two excellent productions for Voyages Direct; the Tom Trago curated Rush Hour off-shoot. "Get That BeeDeeBee" bumps at a mid tempo pace, with a searing keyboard riff that drops intermittently to a backdrop of emotive uplifting chords and an ever mutating heavy beat augmented by barely audible vocal grunts. De Peven ups the pace on the flip with "I'm Coming Baby" filtering luscious disco vibes through crisp house drum programming and Detroit chords that radiate dancefloor heat. The final product is something that wouldn't sound out of place on the recent Rick Wilhite compilation.

Use Me (San Proper remix)
Voyage Direct (Sotu The Traveller remix)
Review: Dutch electronic institute Rush Hour unleash the second and final Voyage Direct remix EP. Keeping their local sentiment, all four featured remixers come straight out of the label's Amsterdam base.
Aardvarck, Boris Werner, San Proper and Sotu The Traveler deliver a diverse set of mixes that continue to retain the interest in Tom Trago's debut album. Following a string of acclaimed singles over three years, April 2009 saw the release of the hot Amsterdam producer’s debut album. Turning heads instantly, the album was a hit and was followed up with a remix EP in August last year. Earlier this year, we saw the release of the Live Takes and now the final instalment drops to round off what has been a highly successful Voyage Direct campaign for Tom Trago. Opening the EP, Boris Werner provides a latin infected house version of "Lost in the Streets of NYC." With shades of disco, the rework has an airy quality to, induced by an intricately delicate piano pattern. A flowing groove keeps the rest of the track grounded as the other components drift off in a dream-like trance. Famed for his distorted dupstep-techno crossovers, Ardvarck hands in a tough electrodisco version of "On the Side." Roughed up kicks combine with Soundstream-style string edits. Highly energised and full of power, the track is roughened up in Ardvarck’s trademark Cult Copy style. San Proper ‘s "Use Me" remix sees disco looping edits, acidic synthbass merging with a Detroit feel before Sotu the Traveller closes the release with his hybrid of dupstep and electrohouse on his interpretation of "Voyage Direct." As the long journey of his Voyage Direct draws to a close, Tom Trago will no doubt look back with starry eyes. Stretching the output from the album to the max but always maintaining the quality, he could have surely never imagined the ride would be this long and prosperous.

Review: If Tom Trago's debut album, Voyage Direct, was an impressive exercise in developing a signature style, then this sophomore set has clearly been designed to show the sheer scale of the Dutchman's growing ambition. It's almost as if Trago is setting out his stall: he's not just a simple disco/house fusionist, but a musical alchemist with more strings to his bow than a twelve-string player with an impressive collection of lutes, mandarins and sitars. The 15 tracks that make up Iris include forays into noughties hip-house (Tyree Cooper collaboration "What You Do"), crisp, late night electro-funk ("Suckers For Fools", with Olivier Day Soul), ambient soundscapes ("Soon In A Cinema"), rush-inducing Joy Orbison-ish future garage ("Joys Of Choice") and, curiously, hooky, radio-friendly pop-house. Of course, there are some typical Trago moments ("Scent Of Heaven", the Dam Funk-does-deep house vibes of "Space Balloon"), but these are sandwiched between a kaleidoscopic array of rainbow-tinted songs and collaborations (Romanthony, Meikbar and San Proper also feature).

Review: Rush Hour Limited presents San Proper's Amsterdam Family series. This is a series where he teams up with known and unknown producers from Amsterdam. Although new to the production game San Proper has been DJing in the Amsterdam club scene for years. Over the last ten years he has been spinning in all the major clubs, bars and lounges, in and around Holland. He's very known and praised for his house and disco sets, but also for blending a lot of different styles into an eclectic mix. On this, the first part, he collaborates with Steven De Peven (the driving force behind Rednose Distrikt) Together they've created three variations of a deep and steamy mid tempo house track. Tested and approved on the dancefloors of Amsterdam!

Review: Oh yes! Some of you out there will have picked up on Shout Outs to the Weirdos in Rathmines, Morgan Buckley's Rush Hour No Label debut last year which presented the young unheralded Dublin artist as both immensely creative and capable of some mind bending electronic music. We are super excited to see Buckley back on No Label with Shplitting The Shtones, a split LP with the unknown Olmo Devin that veers further off piste in the most enticing of fashions. It's Devin that mans the A-side with three tracks that range from tropical house ("Sol Baize At The Chinga") to odd krauty Balearic excursions ("Eau-De-Vie") and the unclassifiable vignette that is "Manual Greever". Buckley supplies the same amount of productions on the B side and it's fair to say 10 minute track "Miwp (Miwpy Mix)" is the highlight coming across like Stereolab jacked up on some particularly potent mushrooms.

Review: Rush Hour's intermittent "No Label" series returns in form here, opting to tap up the analogue supergroup of Torn Hawk, Secret Circuit and Willie Burns for From The Legal Pad Of, a collaborative release of two tracks that mine the post-Balearic, '80s rock vibe intersection the three do so well. As you'd expect, there a distinctly hazy '80s air to proceedings, no doubt brought by the guitar contributions of Torn Hawk, while the more vivid electronics of Secret Circuit offer a fine counterbalance to Willie Burns more driving elements, particularly on the motorik A-side. An excellent collaboration that we hope yields further material....

Review: Veteran UK producer Ed Upton steps up for duty on the No 'Label' operation by Rush Hour's distribution branch with a conceptual LP that's wholly representative of the experimental fare that's preceded it from the likes of Inga Copeland, Stellar OM Source and William Burnett. Whilst Upton's recent mini LP for Power Vacuum as EDMX was the sort of electro leaning techno he's renowned for, Reith Tracks is something else altogether. Recorded in full whilst Upton resided on an Austrian farm, the eight tracks here will resonate with Rephlex fans with Upton operating across a variety of tempos and apparently inspired by the farm's various locations. A handy postcard insert replete with prose from Upton further details the inspiration behind this compelling collection - as with previous No 'Label' releases do not sleep!

Lost Highway
Review: Having seen his series of MMT Tapes 12"s collected by Rush Hour back in 2012 for a superb double LP release, Jorge Velez marks his return to the Amsterdam emporium in fine style here with this Ausland 12". If recent reports are to be believed, this 2 track release is the first of several records from Velez planned over the course of the year with Creme Organization and the Skudge Presents series amongst his planned destinations. Both the title track and "Lost Highway" will leave you craving more productions from the New Jersey-based musician, expanding on the delicate, supple, hardware driven sound of his MMT Tapes material and delightfully strange in their execution. More please Jorge!

I'm So Deep
Review: Rush Hour's latest reissue focus is Vincent Floyd, a producer with a small clutch of 12? releases in the mid-90s for Dance Mania, Relief and Gherkin Records offshoot Resound Records. Although more from the producer is promised in the year to come, the first record is Your Eyes, a reissue the producer's debut for Dance Mania. Released back in 1990, the five-track 12? brandished a title track that was pretty much a perfect example of vocal deep house from the era, and this reissued edition from Rush Hour pares the record down to just three tracks, with the Chan-featuring title cut complemented by an instrumental and "I'm So Deep," described by the label as a "sinister haunting instrumental jackin track".
