Review: Currently back at full activity, and most recently releasing their latest album Il Tradimento Silenzioso (The Silent Betrayal) in 2022, Manchester punk pioneers Slaughter & The Dogs first made their name through their connections to former Joy Division manager Rob Gretton, while their opening slot for the Sex Pistols in Manchester on July 20, 1976 (the second of their two Free Tree Hall shows within two months) played a hand in expanding the city's punk movement before extending to a UK-wide phenomenon. Originally released in 1980, Bite Back served as the feral follow up to the band's quintessential 1978 debut full-length Do It Dog Style, and continued their blistering run of playfully chaotic anthems. No sign of 'Eloise' or 'Grimy Fiendish' here though - this all about genre-defining hits like 'Love Song', 'Neat Neat Neat', 'New Rose' and 'Smash It Up', with a heap of perfectly suited and totally unlikely cover versions, from 'Pretty Vacant' to 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and 'I Walk The Line'. Review: While the 1977 debut album from punk legends The Dead Boys, aptly titled Young, Loud & Snotty, is still regarded as one of the quintessential contributions to the genre, the living members have since stood by their approval of only ONE definitive addition. Boasting the updated/extended moniker of Younger, Louder & Snottyer, these first original mixes are the only versions genuinely endorsed by the band. Recorded in March 1977 at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, by lead vocalist and punk iconoclast Stiv Bators, guitarist Cheetah Chrome and engineer Bob Clearmountain, before Genya Ravan was tapped to try and clean up the mess, don't fool yourself into thinking you've truly experienced the Dead Boys' timeless debut until you've dug deep on these "rough" mixes. Raw, tinny, unrehearsed, loose, and endearingly chaotic; just like the boys always wanted.

Review: The long-gestating follow up to 1992's initial instalment, Black Aria II would finally arrive in 2006 after years of discussion from Misfits/Samhain horror-punk visionary Glenn Danzig, and further his exploration into the cavernous realms of modern classical dark ambience. Conceptually based around Lillith, the first wife of Adam, the material here is far more minimalist and starker than its gothic predecessor, while utilising a more varied array of instruments on top of the pre-established organ and strings, with more Eastern sonic influences to conjure a mercurial vision independent of the preceding volume. Complete with eerie chimes, chants and esoteric lamentations, the project marks one of Danzig's most intriguing works when compared to, say, his Elvis covers compilations, and offers a transportive, biblical, haunting narrative delivered almost exclusively via instrumental atmospherics and insidious gloom.

Melancholic, hypnotic and playful in equal measure, this quintessential slice of coldwave goth rock is a classic forgotten to time, and now that vacant, pining spot on your shelf can be fulfilled without taking out a mortgage for an original pressing flipped to high heaven. Be warned, however, act fast or copies of this long overdue repress will suffer a similar fate.

Review: Dead or Alive's 1985 classic 'You Spin Me Round' is one of few quintessential charting darkwave cuts from the 80s and this reissue of the single is a celebration of its infectious energy. As many will recall, Pete Burns' flamboyant vocals are set against driving beats and knocky synth riffs, as the song famously compares the effect of a dizzying new liaison to the spin of a 12". Review: As part of a large and comprehensive reissues campaign of the work of both horror-punk pioneers Misfits and their most eminent creative brain Glenn Danzig, this reissue of Danzig's Black Aria should be of special note. Danzig's first ever album as a solo artist following prior forays into everything from punk to metal to industrial, it was first released in 1992, again breaking away from prior genre explorations. This time, Danzig would focus his efforts on contemporary, gothic-metallic classical music - though it's largely an instrumental album, Black Aria deals thematically with the Biblical fall from grace undergone by Lucifer, after which grace and sin were implied to have became confused, and hell on earth unleashed.

It's a suitably spectacular sequel to the first part of the Black Aria series that was originally released in 2006 and is seen as one of his most audacious ever works. It finds Danzig extends his band's already ambitious, classically-themed project with this time the infamous Lilith, the first wife of Adam, as the main theme. The cover is a super one that features an illustration by the well known Marvel comic artist Bill Sienkiewicz. All in all, a vital reissue of a metal classic.
