Creep (reissue)

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. Creep (4:26)
  2. Waterfalls (4:17)
Review: American group TLC were way ahead of their time. An all black group who sung about their own expertises with unbridled truth. "Creep" is the strongest example of that as it is based on member Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins's experience with infidelity. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes actually threatened to wear black tape over her mouth when filming the music video as she disagreed with the sentiment but the track went on to become one of their biggest in terms of both critical acclaim but also commercial success. It went Top 10 in the UK and marked a new musical direction for the group that took them to even bigger heights.

Review: Fundamental Records, the electro music label behind the 808 Box, Electric Eclectics and Music for The Other People Place project starts with a new project and new label called Electro Records and has made something of a statement with its first release, not only opting for a striking clear and white splatter patterned slab of wax, but also by securing the services of sometime CPU, Craigie Knowes and Biosoft Record producer Phillip Washington aka Cygnus. Do not forget Fundamental Records is the home of the Dallas producer with a full album in 2016, several EPs and tracks for the 808 Box and Electric Eclectics and the project MACHINE FUNK!... a triple album released only a few months ago. Cygnus rarely disappoints, and we can safely say he's delivered the goods here too. For proof, check the robotic, vocoder-laden deep space shuffle of "Hologram Killer", the lilting melodies and emotive, starry synths of "She Work All Night" and the canny combination of bubbly acid house and deep electro tropes that is "Hologram People". Elsewhere, "Cyberian Nights" doffs a cap to original '80s electro crew Twilight 22 and closing cut "Satisfaction" flits between crunchy dancefloor aggression and drifting-through-space deepness

Review: Keeping a close eye on your dancefloors, Neighbourhood Watch Patrol is the civic-minded mystery artist at the heart of the Telomere Plastic operation. "Morning Confusion" is their second EP in as many months and once again sees the shadowy outfit join the dots between chunky tech-house, acid and electro. Bold, thickset basslines and crunchy beats are the order of the day on side A, where hip-wiggling, all-action opener "Morning Confusion" is quickly followed by the low-slung tech-house box jam that is "The Snuffles". Over on the flip it's all about electro/tech-house fusion, first via the gently pulsing, deep space shuffle of "Third Line", and then the crystalline electronic riffs and funky acid bass of EP highlight "Where's My Sofa".

Review: Two and a half years have passed since the tragic passing of Maltese electro producer Rhys Celeste AKA Microlith. He's missed badly by those who knew him, particularly fellow Maltese artist - and regular studio buddy - Keith Farrugia AKA Sound Synthesis. Here Fundamental Records offers up a collection of previously unheard tracks recorded by Farrugia and Celeste during the latter's lifetime, and as you'd expect it's very, very good. All six tracks are top notch, but our picks are melancholic, acid-flecked deep electro opener "Ecosphere", the ultra-melodic, Boards of Canada-influenced "Flying Cosmonauts", enveloping ambient-electro number "10,500 Miles" and richly emotive closing cut "Safe Travels".

Review: By now we all know Glass Animals were born in and among Oxford's psychedelic pop scene, rather than the trap spots of Atlanta. Although you could be forgiven for making that mistake, if this is your first encounter. The four piece take plenty of inspiration from sweat-soaked, kick and snare-laden southern US sounds, sexy R&B and pimp hop, but it's not a case of imitation as the highest form of flattery - the beats can seriously hold their own, even if the tones will never actually be theirs. Socio-psychological discourse aside, 'Dreamland' is the sum-total of our overall point. There's a sticky, sleazy and altogether intoxicating vibe running through most of what's here, conjuring images of slick-to-touch flesh in deep midsummer party mode. Just check the fittingly explicit 'Tokyo Drifting', featuring Florida rapper Denzel Curry, and the rest should fall into place.

Review: The Beneficiaries is an all-new collaboration between three of Detroit's finest - techno pioneers Jeff Mills and Eddie "Flashin" Fowlkes, and poet artist Jessica Care Moore - and this debut album is nothing less than a touching, whole-hearted tribute to their home city and its rich cultural history. Musically, it's intoxicating, far-sighted and otherworldly, with Care Moore adding a variety of ear-catching spoken word vocals to backing tracks that veer from acid-fired alien techno (epic opener "Metallic Stars", "Star Children of Orion"), percussive, dubbed-out late night murkiness ("People"), sun-bright analogue ambient melodiousness (the sparkling "When The Sun Loves You Back"), dark and moody electronica ("The X"), and heady, bongo-powered hypnotism ("The Crystal City Is Alive"). In other words, it's as great as we expected, and then some.

Originally recorded at the Mount Zion Baptist Church of Universal Awareness, "Do Not Pass Me By" and seen on Miami's TK Disco offshoot. Review: The late, great Betty Wright sadly departed earlier this year, but she leaves behind a mighty legacy in the American soul canon. Among her most universally adored recordings is Betty Wright Live, released in 1978, and that's where High Fashion have turned for this full-bloom yellow 12" release. "Tonight Is The Night" is arresting in any form, but Wright's engaging intro with the crowd takes this version into a whole other realm. As a foil for the tenderness of the A side, the B side finds Ben Liebrand getting in on an edit of "Where Is The Love" that lets Wright's more fiery side shine through with a surefire floor filler.

Review: Liela Moss certainly fits the Bella Union stable; both artist and label are remarkable, capable of blowing away cobwebs and carving out spaces that always feel new, even if the reality is we've been there before. It's not that Moss' role as Duke Spirit's singer didn't already capture our imaginations, it's just that - to borrow sentiments from 'Atoms At Me' - her solo work feels that bit freer and more uninhibited. One of three tracks unveiled before this long form parent landed, in many ways it represents her fundamentals best. Dark energy colliding with a wide-eyed sense of grandeur and majesty in such a way as to wind up complete, rather than disjointed. Like comparing the power synth exhilaration of 'Turn Your Back Around' with 'Watching The Wolf''s brooding black magic atmosphere. File somewhere close to Bat For Lashes, Kate Bush and Nadine Shah.

Review: Johnny Hammond's "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is a seminal slice of long form jazz funk from 1975, which has long been coveted by collectors and DJs and flexed over by dancers for decades. Now expert disco archaeologist and multi-track remixer par excellence Moplen has taken this holy grail to task with a respectfully epic two part opus that takes up both sides of this 12" on High Fashion. This is editing as carried out with utmost reverence for the source material and the hands-on ways in which the pioneers first carried out this ritual of extending the groove. If you need a lesson on how an edit should be done, look no further.

Review: Roy Of The Ravers may be best known for his lysergic rave pelters, but there's always been a hint of grandiose melancholy in his synth work that suggested there was more to the machine botherer than tear-out acid beats. Emotional Response worked with the artist in trawling through a vast archive of material recorded between 1997 and 2017, rescued from hard drives once thought lost, and now gathered as a compelling ambient release with the full fat hardware veneer of Roy's work to date, but coming from a more reflective angle. From cathedral-quaking drones to deeply submerged aquatic excursions, this album has plenty to draw you into the inner world of an acid hero.

Review: Dynamite Cuts' latest extra-special double "45" mines ones of the earliest albums from soul and funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire, a 1971 set that was notably more psychedelic in sound than many of their more celebrated later releases. Opener "C'mon Children" is fiery, weighty and driving in the style of San Francisco funk-rock heavyweights "Tower of Power", while "Bad Tune" more than lives up to its title in a "bad meaning good" way (it also includes some crazy solos, which is no bad thing). Over on disc two, "Help Somebody" is an insanely up-tempo, horn-heavy Boogaloo style romp, while "Momet of Truth" is a low-down funk number straight out of the top drawer.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: The Original Gravity label's latest must-check missive is unusual, featuring as it does four tracks squeezed on to one limited edition seven-inch single. As the title suggests, it's Latin-themed, with two artists (overseen by Welwyn Garden City-based producer Neil Henderson) delivering two sweaty South American funk workouts apiece. Luchito Rodriguez handles side A, delivering the Tito Puente style mambo brilliance of "Hey Guajira Baby" and the insatiable, fienishly fuzzy Latin funk/boogaloo business that is "Vacilon". Over on the flip, Nestor Alvarez first offers up a beefed-up, bass-heavy taken on a familiar mambo favourite ("Lupita"), before sprinting towards heavy Latin funk territory on the insatiable "Bang The Bongo".

Review: When it comes to delivering party-starting funk and soul 45s, Jorun Bombay has an impressive track record. His latest seven-inch is rather fine, too. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Flipside "Mister Magic" is a deeper, warmer and more laidback affair, with tidy electric piano parts, toe-tapping drums, occasional string-laden disco samples and warm bass being joined by a simply wonderful new vibraphone solo.

Review: By the time he recorded "Brazilian Dorian Dream" in 1976, Brazilian composer, musician, producer and bandleader Manfedo Fest had already worked on countless bossa-nova, samba and jazz albums, both in the United States and his native Brazil. Yet the album, which Far Out has now reissued, is like nothing else he recorded before or after - and not just because it was based on "the principle of the modal diatonic scales of the Dorian mode". Musically, it's deliciously vibrant and colourful, combining elements of his native Brazilian samba and bossa-nova with Azymuth style jazz-funk, American jazz-fusion, and futuristic, then cutting edge synthesizer sounds. Above all, though, the album strikes a near perfect balance between funkiness and the sweet sunniness that defines some of the greatest Brazilian music.

Review: Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C only waited 18 months between their debut and this sophomore follow up album. Ot still manages to veer away from what you might expect, with acts like Suicide and The Beach Boys apparently more influential on the writing process than the post-punk outfits you might expect. Still the record features anthems about flirting with self-destruction and gargantuan tunes that have fast and frenetic grooves. Touches of the surrealism they experienced while on a constant and busy tour pervade the album and make it a fine follow up that show the band still have a great knack for writing urgent songs that are both personal yet relatable.

Review: Given that keyboardist and producer Kamaal Williams' 2018 debut album "The Return" was such a rip-roaring success critically and commercially, hopes are naturally sky-high for this delayed sequel. Happily, we can confirm that Williams has arguably excelled himself on "Wu Hen", once again blurring the boundaries between jazz-funk, seductive downtempo grooves, hazy space jazz, deep house influenced dancefloor workouts (see "Mr Wu", whose title references his other artistic alias, Henry Wu) and soft-focus soul - all with the assistance of an expanded line-up of guest musicians and vocalists. Perhaps the biggest impact is made by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, a composer whose string arrangements add an ear-catching new dimension to Williams work. Stunning stuff all told.

Review: Even by their usual high standards, the Allergies new LP - their fourth in total - is a particularly kaleidoscopic, party-starting affair. It sees the popular Bristol duo join forces with a series of guest vocals and MCs, most notably regular rapper Andy Cooper and cheeky scene veterans the Cuban Brothers, to deliver a series of funk-fuelled workouts that variously mix and match elements of hip-hop, mambo, stomping Northern Soul, deep funk, jazz and horn-heavy 1970s soul. While the samples of old are still present, it's the tightness and weightiness of the live instruments and strong vocals that make "Say The Word" such a terrific listen. In our opinion it's their strongest collection of work to date, and that's saying something. Bravo!

  1. Mexico (Parts 1) (4:00)
  2. Mexico (Parts 2) (3:49)
Review: The always on point DJ Tron comes through here with a duo of funk and breaks tunes that are heavily influenced by Mexican culture (hence the name). "Mexico (Parts 1)" comes with an archetypal trumpet lead that brings the heat before shakers, drums and percussion all froth with life. "Mexico" (Parts 2) is even more freewheeling, with layer up on layer of rhythm and sound all riding up and down in loose, limb shaking fashion. Perfect for hard dancing b-boys and DJs who like to work, these are dance floor missives that cannot miss.

Review: Having sold out in record time a couple of months back, Phil Mison's latest album as Cantoma - an all-star affair featuring a wealth of guest vocalists and musicians - has been rapidly reissued, this time with a colour insert. Musically, "Into Daylight" is sweet and soft-focused, with the Balearic veteran prioritising seductively shuffling samba beats, dewy-eyed vocals, gentle melodies, dubby basslines and tactile instrumentation (think meandering trumpet solos, acoustic guitars, flutes, twinkling Rhodes solos and Pat Metheny style jazz guitar). It's the kind of album that warms you like a hug, soothing mind and body whilst providing enough slow-motion excitement to reward repeat listens.

Review: This record is the first time PJ Harvey's demos for her 1992 debut album Dry have been put out on a standalone album. The rough edge nature of the recordings lends them plenty of extra rawness and character, meaning the low-slung guitar poems the artist serves up sound even more direct. As well as previously unseen photos by Maria Mochnacz, the record comes with brand new artwork, so is a real must for Harvey fans. This release marks the first in a planned series of reissues from UMC/Island and Beggars that will see all PJ Harvey's albums reissued with plenty more demos.

Review: Buacharest-based Vincentiulian has been an important figure in the global tech-house scene for some time, delivering largely deep and emotive dancefloor cuts for such labels as Atipic, Subtil and Contemporan. Here the Romanian makes his first outing on Eastenderz, an imprint that's fast becoming one of tech-house's most consistent outlets. For the occasion, he's offered up a quartet of cuts that fix warm, deep house style musical elements to thickset, occasionally off-kilter deep house grooves. It's a smart and attractive blend that results in numerous highlights, with the simultaneously chunky and spacey "Kald", moodier "Quatro" and lively opener "Din0zaur" standing out.

Review: The world was very different in 1992, but some of the greatest musical moments from that year stand the test of time. Just take Polly Jean Harvey's staggering debut - the making of a musical icon and one of the era's finest examples of songwriting. It still sounds exceptional and its messages still resonate, lifting the woke-washed veil of our age in one fell swoop, laying bare the fact that many toxic attitudes prevail. It's rock music, but that's hardly the point. What matters isn't so much what's being played, but how and what's being said. Delivered with an air of Pixies and nod to Patti Smith, written in the wake of a relationship imploding, our introduction to Harvey remains vital as ever. A refusal to accept simplistic, patriarchal views of womanhood and femininity, or indeed simplistic patriarchal views of anything, the record's razor sharp observations, cunning wit and deft ability to reference but feel original is remarkable.

There's a timeless quality to this stuff, whether it's the late-night swirl of "Sacrement" or the choppy, quirked-up groove of "Every Kind Of People With Any Kind Of Soul". Out of time and out of mind, the Plate just bring the kind of satisfaction to club music that could launch a thousand sessions. For the late night crew, for the mid-morning rollers and the sophisticated toe-tappers in between, sink your ear-teeth into this generous serving but whatever you do, don't call it an album.

On this new one from One By One records they take a side each, with Payoh SoulRebel's "Time fe Revolution" taking you on a long and languid journey into deep riddims, shakers and gentle vocal coos that are utterly soothing and sensuous. Payoh SoulRebel then steps up with a dub version that draws out the leads, sinks the drums even deeper and encourages you to sit back and clear your mind.
