Distorted Dreams EP
Cat: ZEDD 12262. Rel: 27 Jun 18

Disco/Nu-Disco
Distorting Space Time (Ron Trent remix) (8:51)
Latican Boogie (Crackazat remix) (5:38)
In Search Of The Dream (feat Angela Johnson - Lay-Far remix) (6:36)
Distorting Space Time (Fouk remix) (6:56)
Review: The veteran producer's latest EP, in which a quartet of highly regarded producers tinker with tracks from his vast catalogue, contains some real gems. Top of the pile is Ron Trent's rework of "Distorting Space Time", which is not only typically warm, woozy and percussion rich, but also makes great use of some decidedly trippy, delay style effects. Elsewhere, Crackazat grins his way towards piano house anthem territory via an arms-aloft revision of "Latican Boogie", Lay-Far joins the dots between jazz-funk, boogie and sumptuous deep house on a delightful rework of "In Search of the Dream" and Fouk successfully breaks up the beats on a jazzy and bass-heavy mix of "Distorting Space Time".

Prospect Park - "The Kinda Love" (Jkriv remix) (8:06)
Jakatta - "My Vision" (feat Seal - The Vision remix) (7:03)
Review: Dave Lee aka Joey Negro has pulled together a fine team of remixers here to serve up their own versions of tunes by him, Jakarta, The Sunburst Band and Prospect Park, all for his own Z Records. Freerange boss and deep house Don Jimspter goes first and brings real sunshine to his take on 'He Is.' Detroit badman Andres then does what he does best to 'I Recognise', that is layering in hip hop slanted beats and nice rolling baselines under lush chords. On the flip are two more positive house vibrations to make this a handy EP.

Ashford & Simpson - "Found A Cure" (Joey Negro Found A dub mix) (6:41)
Review: Dave Lee aka Joey Negro is turning into a contemporary version of original disco mixer Tom Moulton. Like that producer's now legendary disco era reworks, the revisions on Lee's "Remixed With Love" albums are floor-focused interpretations that use little more than the original vocal and instrumental parts and some well-placed effects. There are plenty of fine examples of Moulton and Negro's craft on the Essex producer's latest collection of disco-mixes, including a slightly more dubby and spaced-out take on Evelyn 'Champagne' King electrofunk hit "I'm In Love", a swinging, jazz-funk influenced interpretation of Odyssey sing-along "Going Back To My Roots" and a superb dub of Ashford and Simpson's "Found a Cure" that brilliantly builds towards a sweaty vocal conclusion.

Review: It's been eight years since Joey Negro put together Backstreet Brit Funk, a fine compilation that shone a light on Britain's late '70s and early '80s underground disco, soul, jazz-funk and electro scenes. This belated sequel, then, is long overdue. This time round, the selections are arguably even deeper, with highlights including the low-slung disco-funk of Rick Clarke's "Potion", the glassy-eyed breeziness of Paradise's "Stop & Think", the footworker-friendly jazz-funk riot of Touchdown's "Ease Your Mind" and the samba-fired carnival flavours of "Brazelia" by Brazelia. There's also a fine bonus in the shape of a previously unreleased dub of Janet Kay's overlooked Brit-boogie slammer "Eternally Grateful" that's almost worth the admission price on its own.

Review: Surprisingly, Produced With Love is Dave Lee's first album of original productions under the Joey Negro alias for nearly 20 years. Predictably, it's a fine set, as you'll discover by checking the clips of CD1. This time round, Lee has wisely chosen to indulge his disco and boogie influences, delivering tracks that tiptoe the fine line between stylistic authenticity and the feel-good house music he's long been known for. Highlights include a new disco version of classic Diane Charlamagne hook-up "Must Be The Music", the Arthur Russell inspired "Distorting Space & Time" and a fine, electrofunk style cover of Kraftwerk's "It's More Fun To Compute". Disc two boasts a swathe of bonus material, including a string of sublime remixes and Lee's superb productions for Peven Everett and Alex Mills.

Gwen McCrae - "Keep The Fire Burning" (JN Special dub #3) (6:49)
Wardell Piper - "The Power Of Love" (JN Power Of The Boogie mix) (7:11)
Review: Thanks to soaring demand on the second-hand market, Joey Negro has decided to re-press this killer collection of disco remixes that originally appeared on a limited-edition Record Store Day release. All four were created, but not released, during the making of his superb Remixed With Love albums. The A-side boasts two versions of Lonnie Liston Smith classic "Space Princess"; an epic, peak-time disco revision and a brilliant beats version (the "Break Mix"") that consists of little more than punchy percussion, trippy effects and bags of energy. Turn to the flip for Negro's impeccably delay-laden, New York style dub of Gwen McCrae's "Keep The Fire Burning" and a spine-tingling, sing-along rearrangement of Wardell Piper's lesser-celebrated disco-boogie classic "The Power of Love".

The APX - "Lose Yourself To The Groove" (JN Future Boogie edit) (6:55)
Review: Z Records' compilation style "Attack The Dancefloor" EPs rarely fail to deliver, with big cheese Dave Lee (AKA Joey Negro) collecting together floor-friendly treats with the label's vast catalogue. There's plenty to set the pulse racing on this 12th volume, starting with Negro's organ-heavy revision of Bobby D'Ambrosio and Michelle Weeks' classic '90s house cover of Inner Life disco classic "Moment of My Life". Purist disco thrills are provided by Lee's tidy Doug Willis re-edit of Carlos Romanos' boogie-era disco-funk bumper "121", as well as his vintage cover of MFSB classic "K-Jee". Arguably best of all, though, is Lee's sparkling, synth-heavy "Future Boogie" mix of The APX's revivalist electrofunk jam, "Lose Yourself To The Groove".

I'm Not Afraid Of The Future (reprise)
Review: Next up for Z is this long awaited remix package for the classic Akabu track, "I'm Not Afraid Of The Future". The original was released in 2006 and was supported by the likes of Pete Tong, Gilles Peterson and Aaron Ross. Gilles Peterson described the original track as "Mizzel Brothers go to Chicago", which pretty well sums it up. Other DJ's who supported the original are Bob Sinclair, Martin Solveig, Miguel Miggs, Tom Middleton, Knee Deep, Ame, Danny Howells, Paul Woolford, Liquid People, Grant Nelson, Seamus Haji, Neil Pierce, Nic Fanciulli, Mync Project, Unabombers, Soul Central and Osama Bin Laden (maybe). These new mixes are receiving huge support too. First up on remix duties is DJ Fudge who made his name on the Atlanta music scene through his rocking DJ sets and minimal turntable approach. For this remix he takes the original deep vibe into a more atmospheric, tech house zone. The second remix comes from the jumping Jimpster (aka Jamie Odell) who runs the influential Freerange label as well as being part of acclaimed live outfit The Bays. Here he turns in a minimal take on the original by swinging into deep house and electronica heaven.

DJ Leandre - "I Tried 4 U"
Review: Charity-driven imprint House Is The Cure have been doing an excellent job of drafting in big hitters to donate tracks and nominate recipients of funds, and this package looks like it could be one of the biggest yet. The Nathaniel X Project is on fire on "Bring The Organs", crafting the most dextrous kind of garage house swing without sounding like any sort of imitation as the live snare hits bounce all over the shop with grace and the organ licks get equally frisky. Joey Negro gets crafty with a full-blooded re-edit of Krystol on "Beyond The Dance", and Patchworks are on fine form with their stripped back groover. DJ Leandre is on searing form with the deep burner "I Won't Meet Your Love", full of delicious disco stomp but completely played down for maximum effect.

Review: Given the length of his career - 25 years and counting - it's a bit surprising it's taken this long for Defected to invite Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee into their House Master hall of fame. Happily, they've done a good job summarising his career to date, getting a good balance between both big hits ("American Dream", "Ride The Storn", "Everyday" etc) and lesser-known remixes (early tweaks of Reece Project, Simphonia, Extortion), as well as showcasing the disco side of Lee's output (superb reworks of Candido and Patrice Rushen, for starters). It's surprising how many of Lee's vintage productions and reworks have stood the test of time - something that can't be said for many of his contemporaries.

As the suffix suggests, this compilation handily draws together all manner of 80s classics from the boogie and electro funk canon and is a must for any budding Greg Wilson's out there. Naturally pared down from the sizeable original 20 track Double CD release, this double vinyl edition nonetheless still brandishes ten cuts primed for the open minded discotheques and you'll be hooked as soon as the 1983 one hit wonder "Ease Out" from Mid Air reverberates into action.

Review: One half of Joey Negro's most daring re-edit project to date, here we find eight more disco delights sparkling with the Dave Lee treatment. Paying complete respect to the original grooves, melodies and elements, each track has been given the perfect amount of contemporary disco polish. From the soft, sensuous soul jam "May My Love Be With You" to the jazzier vibraphonic leanings of Ayers' "Get On Up" via an incredible dubbed-out, near-instrumental swagger on "I Should've Loved Ya", not only does it join the dots between dancefloors of the last 40 years, but also showcases Dave Lee's boldly broad production - and selection - style. Feel the love.

Review: Having invested serious time in unearthing the original tapes of some of his all-time favourite songs, Remixed With Love is a genuine labour of love for Z Records boss Joey Negro. Paying close attention to detail throughout, each track has been edited with subtlety and soul. In some cases he's added a little more emphasis on the drums, in others he's added that all-important extension for essential dancefloor immersion. In each instance, he's nailed it. From the hazy disco mist applied to Roxy Music's "Same Old Scene" to the refocusing of elements on the Chic-flavoured guitar and bass fusion on "Tonight (I'm Alright)" each edit shimmers and sparkles with disco distinction. One of Joey Negro's ambitious projects to date, this really is an incredible piece of work.

Review: There's a reason Dave Lee aka Joey Negro puts his name to so many aliases and compilations; it's because he brandishes an encyclopaedic knowledge of disco, boogie, house, Go Go, funk and plenty more besides. As you might have guessed from the title of this compilation on his own Z Records label, the latest focus of his attentions is Italo House, more specifically the ear in Italian dance music when trace influences from the scenes in 1980s England, Chicago and New York coalesced to form a sound that was entirely it's own. Typically for a Joey Negro compilation, this double disc sets presents a deeper insight into what the movement was like with some twenty four tracks of underground Italian house which has never been given the retrospective treatment it deserves. Until now that is!

Review: Joey Negro's "Soul Of Disco" series has always been a great source of forgotten disco gems for those who like their dance music rich, stringy and soulful. This third two-disc selection from the Z Records boss is no different. For disco diggers, there's plenty to enjoy, be it the rich, horn-drenched instrumental grooves of Board Of Directors' "Hanging Tough", the raw, clavinet groove of Loi's "Body Contact" or the wobbly synth bass and perfect percussion of Phenomenal's "One Two Three". With a smattering of bonus re-edits from Joey Negro himself for those who like their grooves a bit more DJ-friendly, "The Soul Of Disco 3" is nigh on essential.

Review: For the latest release on Z Records offshoot Surround Sounds, Carly Simon's seminal Balearic pop standard "Why" gets covered by Kola Kube. Four differing versions on one twelve that all feature the vocals of legendary UK singer Diane Charlemagne, who has worked with the likes of Goldie, 2020 Soundsystem and London Elektricity. Three come from Crazy P knob twiddler Hot Toddy and there's a bonus block party style production from Negro himself. The Hot Toddy Special Dub just edges it thanks to some excellent synth phasing and a thumping bassline.

Review: Hit makers Rodgers and Edwards' mammothly influential Chic songs enjoy one of the finest curatorial salutes from UK disco's most discerning torch-bearer/creator Dave Lee. Digging deep into his vaults and unearthing some of the best homages, references and blatant covers, Negro join the dots and delivers some rarities you may have never heard before. Get lost in the music of She's shiny guitar strumming "Easy Money", freak out to Charanga 76's "Good Times" and get lucky with Van Jones's "Not About That"... Everyone knows about the hits and influence, most of us know how important a role Chic played in sample culture but Negro has gone the extra mile to celebrate some of the lesser known references Chic have had over the years. Freaking great.

Review: Some eight years after the first volume of the Supafunkanova series got disco and boogie DJs in a spin, Joey Negro and Sean P have decided to put together a follow-up. Like the first instalment - an essential set of little-known funk jams from the disco, boogie and P-funk era - Supafunkanova Vol 2 is full of high grade, little-known material. If anything, the selections are deeper than those on the predecessor; it's unlikely that many will have previously come across the sparkling, bongo-laden synth-funk of Stimulus' "Super Stimulus", Nice & Tight Band's hustlin' disco-funk party jam "Let's Get High (On The Music)" or Brenda Harris's low-slung "Making Love Will Keep You Fit" (a throwaway piece of advice that remains as true as ever).

To coincide with the release of a follow-up, the duo has decided to re-release the compilation, this time with new artwork but an almost identical track list. If you missed out first time around, it should be an essential purchase. It's packed with killer dancefloor material, from the bass-propelled dancefloor hustle of BLT's "Tighten Up" and South Bronx's "The Bottom Line", to the eccentric boogie-rap of Jahneen's "Gigolette" and sprightly, soul-meets-P-funk of Leprechaun's "Reach Out (& Touch Someone)".

Review: Joey Negro unleashes more funky and soulful house classics as seen on the first volume of this compilation series and there's more where that came from. The legendary Ron Trent remixes his own USG project on "Mcameu" and once you hear that Rhodes piano melody of Bougie Soliterre's "Got That Bug" you'll realise its of those classics you always knew of, just didn't know the name! You can see how sounds on "The Murder Track" by Mike Delgado influenced producers like The Mountain People and still to this day no one makes house music as sexy as Robert Owens, as heard on the classic "Gotta Work"

Review: Given his long-standing dedication to the sound, there could be few more fitting DJs to compile a two-disc set of 90s House & Garage than Joey Negro. While there are, of course, some fairly well-known anthems present - the Masters At Work produced "Voices in My Mind" by Voices, and Kerri Chandler's brilliant "Ladbroke Grove", in particular - the vast majority of the veteran Essex DJ's "personal selections" will be unfamiliar to all but the most dedicated US garage and soulful house heads. The excellent track list includes a couple of killer Mood II Swing jams, a lesser-known Tony Humphries instrumental take on A Bitch Named Johanna's organ-heavy "Freak It", and a thunderous, sub-heavy Fire Island remix of Michael Watford.

Review: With the possible exception of The Reflex, no other producer can match the multi-track re-edits and remixes delivered by house maestro and long-time disco digger Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee. Having laid down a marker with 2013's Remixed With Love, the veteran producer has decided to emphasize his credentials with this similarly superb follow-up. Over the course of two action-packed discs, Lee skillfully re-arranges 20 disco and boogie favourites, using the inherent swing, funk and energy of his source material to create superb, dancefloor-friendly tweaks. Amongst the well-known cuts - think "Pull Up To The Bumper", "Keep The Fire Burning" and "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" - you'll also find sublimely soulful rearrangements of overlooked cuts from Nicolette Larson, Cheryl Lynn and Norman Connors.

His "personal selection" gathers together a mixture of well-known scene anthems - "Al Naafyish", "Just Give The DJ A Break", the Dub of "Release Yourself", "Scorpio", and so on - alongside some obscure gems that are well worth the admission price. Of these, we need to draw your attention to Kosmic Light Force's brilliant - and frustratingly hard to find - "Mysterious Waves", and The Russell Brothers thrillingly intergalactic "The Party Scene".

Review: You can always rely on Joey Negro when it comes to compiling the best of house, disco, soul.. anything really! And you can add this one to the list. Dave Lee presents a selection of classics that's up there alongside with The Soul of Disco compilations, Nite:life 08 and The Trip. Featuring some true classics such as the CJ Mackintosh remix of "Voices In My Mind" (complete with soaring vocals courtesy of India), Joe Clausell's classic "Ladbroke Grove" which is always a worthy addition (particularly when that absolutely mental piano roll rushes in) and there's plenty more. Legends such as Mateo & Matos, Mood II Swing and Ralphi Rosario all appear, even Joey Negro himself who turns in a sweet remix of Thelma Houston's "All of That".

Review: This tasty 12" serves as a kind of vinyl appendix to Joey Negro's Remixed With Love albums. It contains two more tracks re-built from the original studio multi-track tapes. Perhaps the headline attraction is the flipside "re-vibe" of Chic's "Everybody Dance", which the veteran British producer turns into a joyous chunk of dub disco full of echoing effects, Reflex style instrumental breakdowns and Idjuts-esque beats. Arguably even better, though, is his A-side version of Atlantic Starr's "Circles", a Southport Weekender favourite that the Z Records boss has turned into a life-affirming, string-drenched disco epic. It has great sing-along potential when played at the right time, to the right crowd.

Review: Initially released in honour of Record Store Day 2018, this tasty 12" boasts previously unheard "bonus mixes" put together by disco/house stalwart Joey Negro during work on the fantastic Remixed With Love albums. On the A-side, the Z Records chief lays down two versions of Lonnie Liston Smith's Loft classic "Space Princess", first offering up an epic, peak-time disco extension and then a brilliant beats version (the "Break Mix") that consists of little more than punchy percussion, trippy effects and bags of energy.

Review: When Joey Negro and Sean P established the Disco Spectrum series of compilations back in 1999, few DJs were digging for disco. Almost two decades on, we're told that disco was the sound of summer 2017 (and the summer before that). The time is right, then, for this "best of", containing the finest cuts from the series' three previous volumes. Review: Two years have passed since his inaugural Remixed With Love collection but Joey finally delivers another immaculate collection of official edits and reversions. A quick squizz at the artists he's refixed will confirm (if any confirmation is necessary) Joey's weight and authority: Cheryl Lynn, Willie Hutch, The O'Jays, Patti LaBelle, Kleeer and many more go under Joey's crafty knife. Extensions are made, beats and fine-tuned, percussive breakdowns are polished and subtle dubby elements are brought to the fore. Even the most ardent of Dave Lee collectors may have a few holes to fill right here.

Gladys Knight & The Pips - "Taste Of Bitter Love" (Joey Negro Disco re blend) (6:53)
Grace Jones - "Pull Up To The Bumper" (Joey Negro Bumper To Bumper mix) (7:41)
Robert Palmer - "Every Kinda People" (Joey Negro Multicultural Multitrack mix) (7:25)
Review: Given his credentials and track record, it's unsurprising that original disco and boogie artists are willing to let Joey Negro play around with their biggest hits. His first stab at this kind of multi-track remix, 2014's Remixed With Love, was such a success that he's decided to unleash another swathe of revisions over two vinyl double-packs. This "Part B" edition features some killer reworks, including a sublime, on-point rearrangement of Gwen McRae's "Keep The Fire Burning" and a rolling, dubbed-out version of Grace Jones' "Pull Up To The Bumper" that rivals Larry Levan's classic remix. The veteran producer also successfully turns Pockets' "Come Go With Me" into a classic soulful house rub, and pushes Thelma Houston's "I'm Here Again" further towards disco anthem territory.

Review: Second time around for Joey Negro and Sean P's peerless collection of post-punk era New York club cuts, a compilation that proved hugely influential when it was first released way back in 2000. The track listing strangely omits one track present on the original release (the full 16-minute version of Steve Miller Band's "Macho City"), but otherwise it's a faithful reproduction. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the eccentric electrofunk of Yoko Ono's "Walking On Thin Ice" and P-funk influenced strut of Material's "Over And Over", to the skittish jazz-goes-dub disco bustle of Don Cherry's "I Walk" and the low-slung percussive voodoo of Nicky Siano's "Move". The undisputed master of NYC leftfield disco, Arthur Russell, is represented via cuts from Loose Joints, Dinosaur and Indian Ocean.

Timbales Are My Way Of Life (JN beats) (3:27)
Review: More from Joey Negro's "Remixed With Love" series, in which the veteran producer puts his own spin on classic disco cuts using the original multi-track master tapes. The headline attraction on his latest batch of reworks is undoubtedly the two takes on Tamiko Jones' intergalactic disco-funk jam "Can't Live Without Your Love". There's a fine, full vocal "Space Disco Mix" and a "Super Dub" that strips the vocal back to delay-laden phrases bobbing in a sea of echoing guitars, spacey synth flourishes and killer grooves. Elsewhere, the Z Records boss delivers a beat-free "Reprise" of the Trammps' "Come Together" that makes much of their group vocals and tasty organ motifs, before turning Patti LaBelle's "Music Is My Way Of Life" into a timbales-heavy drum track.

Joey Negro unleashes more funky and soulful house classics as seen on the first volume of this compilation series and there's more where that came from.

Frankie Knuckles, Satoshi Tomiie, Andrea Mendez - "Bring Me Love" (Eventual dub) (6:56)
Review: Some serious no-nonsense house grooves for all true-school DJs to cop, dug out from the annals of club music history. Things kick off good and proper with Joey Negro's insanely powerful "Dub Groove" mix of Lenny Fontana's "A Place Called Heaven". Negro's on the buttons once again with the classic, pumping "Rhodes Dub" of "You Make Me Whole" by Jay Denes and Ada Dyer. On the flip, Julian Sanza drops the squelchy boogie inflected "To Love" before the record ends on a serious bang with the dream team of Frankie Knuckles, Satoshi Tomiie and Andrea Mendez's "Bring Me Love (Eventual Dub)". This is as actual house as actual house can get - the real deal, crystalised in four evergreen gems pressed on one handy record.

Review: We've been waiting over 20 years for this one... The second ever Joey Negro album Dave Lee has given the world is a bonafide good times bomb that's saturated in raw funk soul disco escapism. Heavily faced by the sadly departed Diane Charlemagne (notably on the Chic-busting opener "Prove That You're Feelin' Me" and a new twist on his disco thumper classic "Must Be The Music") and peppered with silky house grooves such as the dreamy east coast workout "Won't Let Go", the album is a love letter to the grooves that influenced Lee's earliest musical tastes and visions. With remixes of The O'Jays and the Fatback Band ripping up the finale, this really is a tastefully (and timely) delivered trip. Feel the love.

To mark their 50th release, Brooklyn scalpel fiends Razor-N-Tape has put together a triple-pack of tried-and-tested reworks from some of the scene's heaviest hitters. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".
