Review: Consisting of Dennis White, Charlie May, and Dave Gardner, Quiet Places is a new project by the UK producers focusing on vivid and wide-screen journeys. Between the three, their production roots go deep into some of electronic music's most important outputs of the last few decades. Be it performing live as part of Sasha's recent Refracted shows, their own individual projects such as Spooky, Sentre and Cosmonauts or remixing the likes of M83, The XX, Thom Yorke, Little Dragon or Elizabeth Fraser, they are no strangers to electronica.

Review: Rome label Maledetta Discoteca Records encouraged a bunch of talented local musicians to get together and play live, embrace spontaneity and do their improvised best. What results is this new record, which is funk at its core, but which is coloured by so much more around the edges. Recorded in the historic Auditorium 900 studios with sound engineer Fabrizio Piccolo, the record takes in everything from 70s instrumentals to progressive funk, Hispanic rock and more with all manner of wah wah guitars, synths and organ bringing each groove to life in tiles fashion.

Review: Having successfully teased us with "Calypso Beach" earlier this year, Phil Mison and Volmer's Ambala project levels up with their debut album. As you'd expect from all parties concerned, the whole set is brimming with Balearic bliss; the languid flamenco of "Last Swimmer", the soft focus slap bass house groove of "Distant Island", the fine balance of African folk and bluesy guitar struts of "Bambari", the Steve Miller style "Walk With The Dreamers"... These are just a handful of the 11 reasons why Volume One has perfect summer soundtrack potential. Both on and off the dancefloor.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
K15 - "Elemental" (7:53)
Culross Close - "Intrinsic Value" (4:30)
Review: K15 has been a man on a mission since he first emerged. The London based musician and beat maker has a truly cosmic sound that leans heavily on jazz for inspiration. He's worked on vital labels like Wild Oates and Eglo and now pops up on Mother Tongue to care of one side of this hot 12". His "elemental" is a far sighted track with cosmic keys and spiritual pads layered up over tumbling broken beats. On the flip, his other alias Culross Close appears with "Intrinsic Value" which is a lush track at the intersection of house, jazz, broken beat and jazz-funk. It is stuffed with the sort of very real feelings that define all his work.

Connor Mikami & Michi - "January Blues" (7:38)
Zigon (8:00)
Foolish Human (6:43)
None Of My Friends Are Normal (9:26)
Review: LA breaks maestro-aggregator IYKYK (If You Know You Know) deliver four new ones in the realm of compression-moulded PVC, not to be confused with the whopping sixteen-track digital compilation of the same name that they released back in 2020. Though it may feature many of the same names, the cream - namely the regular face that is Connor Mikami - rises to the top on this new one. Indeed, the self-effacing "if you know you know" mantra does well to complement the 2-steppy, shuffly, minimal, cosmic breaksteppage that abounds on this EP, on which you'll surely come down with the 'January Blues' before coming to the just realisation, 'None Of My Friends Are Normal'.

Tin Man - "Jerkin Acid" (6:04)
Derek Carr - "The Highlander" (6:14)
Posthuman - "Going Deep" (7:33)
Dircsen - "Last Spare" (6:53)
Review: We're Going Deep started life as a popular Facebook group dedicated to deep, dancefloor-focused electronic music. Now its founder, I Love Acid mainstay Paul Wise AKA Placid, has decided to grab tracks from some of his pals and launch a related record label. Tin Man kicks things off in fine style via the bouncy, undulating acid-house bustle of 'Jerkin Acid', before Mr Melodious himself Derek Carr offers up the immersive deep space shuffle of 'The Highlander'. Posthuman's 'Going Deep' strikes a near perfect balance between immersive, life-affirming electronics and analogue deep house drums, while Dircsen's EP closer ('Last Spare') is the best - and most emotive - slow acid cut we've heard in some time.

A Stitch In Time (6:01)
Distant Echoes (6:06)
Review: Originally released back in 1994 on NuWave Recordings, Volume One by Sam Gordon aka Missing receives a much deserved reissue on Bournemouth's Vinyl Fanatiks. On the A side, have the post hardcore/intelligent jungle epic 'A Stitch In Time' which is the perfect zeitgiest of the early '90s UK undergound, sounding similar to the output of Metalheadz at the time. Over on the flip, he dives deeper into the aether on the psychedelic stepper 'Distant Echoes' featuring intoxicating and trancey 303 acid underpinned by some immaculate breakneck riddims. Gordon's affiliations and production credits also count the likes of Kemet Crew, Shogun Assassins and Demografiks (with Marlon Hart).

123 (9:55)
456 (8:02)
789 (6:13)
Review: When it comes to crafting quality edits of ludicrously obscure cuts, few can match long-serving scalpel fiend Loud-E. Having previously plied his wares on Ambassador's Reception and Berceuse Heroique's occasional re-edit series, the Netherlands-based producer has been recruited by Leeds-based, Balearic-minded imprint Passport to Paradise. Predictably, there's much to enjoy throughout, not least the trippy backwards effects, rubbery boogie bassline, starburst electronics and locked-in drums of extended cosmic disco workout "123". Elsewhere, Loud-E chops up some chiming, glassy-eyed, instrumental Balearic synth-pop on "456", before unleashing some wild and weird electronics on the out-of-this-world madness of "789".

Why I Came To California (4:11)
The Real Thing (5:57)
Review: Mystery edit label Brooklyn North catapult themselves into the dance with two superb flashbacks. Leon Ware's "That's Why I Came To California" gets the treatment on the A as full focus is fixed on that big positive chorus and the drums are touched up with a little broken energy. Flip for Sergio Mendes's "The Real Thing". Jacked with an uptempo energy, layers of instrumentation and insatiable vocal hooks, it's highlights Sergio's most driving and divine elements. Launching with two 12"s in the same week, Brooklyn North aren't messing around here.

Celebration Suite (Dan Shake cut)
La Vem Salgueiro (Dan Shake cut)
Rico Suave Bossa Nova (Dan Shake cut)
Review: Dan Shake has been making a sterling name for himself as a DJ with many strings to his bow, and now he's launching an exciting new label with a focus on edits that reach into his bag of tricks and provide some genuinely intriguing alternatives to the usual rehashed disco fodder. On this first 12" there's a distinctly Latin theme, not least on "Celebration Suite" which launches into a bona fide party classic after a hailstorm of drumming and carnival whistles. "La Vem Salguiero" is equally boisterous, but there's also "Rico Suave Bossa Nova" to cool things down for those more loungey moments.

Review: P-Balans is a new imprint in the Future Nuggets emerging constellation. A tehnodelia ramification within the Bucharest electronic scene that will host rising names like Khidja and Borusiade while introducing new characters like The Holy Fix (Camil Dumitrescu, co-member of Delusion Men) and Utopus (Ion D, producer of Steaua de Mare, Raze de Soare, Anahore?ii among others) already featured on "Sounds on the Unheard from Romania vol. 2". Keeping the same strategies of fusion and diffusion as Future Nuggets, P-Balans will explore the space traversal to techno, entering and exiting the dark halls of the club through multiple doors.
