Review: Joyce Cooling went on to become a hugely successful pop and jazz singer and guitarist but before all that she recorded 'Cameo', a much-revered debut album that now gets reissued for the very first time. It's a tune with rich Brazilian influences that veers from swing to pop and back again with her vocals on three of the seven tunes as much of the focus is on her guitar. She is joined by skilled sideman such as keyboardist Jay Wagner and it makes for a superb listen featuring several fine performances.

Base Camp Alpha 808
Review: If you ever needed to understand the core principles of Detroit electro, then look no further than this timely reissue from Underground Resistance. In light of the new music coming out in these times that is indebted to this particular side to the masked crew, it's refreshing to hear how vital and uncompromising a track as well worn as "The Final Frontier" sounds now. The pace doesn't let up as the cosmic surge of "Entering Quadrant Five" takes over, but hold tight for "Base Camp Alpha 808" as it sports perhaps the most compatible structure of all the tracks in light of more modern juxtapositions.

UK artist David Duncan recorded only one EP as Ability II but it is one of those which has become an utter cult classic and much sought-after 12". The story goes that the bassline on this one was so deep the mastering engineer had a problem cutting it. There is no evidence of it on this reissue though - that bassline powers the tune perfectly as the plunging kick drums and dancing synths get you moving your body. Perfectly deployed vocals bring heart-aching soul as this most warm and dubby cut drowns you in timeless deep techno. Next to the gorgeous original mix is an extended dub for even more drawn-out late-night dance floor pleasures.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped, otherwise in excellent condition***

As one of his more intermittent labels, Modified Suede has only put out a small handful of Scott Grooves releases previously, but now the imprint is back in action to offer up a few unreleased gems from the vaults. "Movin' On" is rich with vocals from Seoulonnie, keeping a smooth lounge tone to the deep house backing track with occasional chorus key-change flourishes. "Red Crates" is equally soulful although its righteous piano stealing the show instead of vocals here, while "Me Solista" gets into a Latin frame of mind with its chimes and shuffles. "French Road" represents the more adventurous side of the EP, heading into a more subtle soundscape populated by dubbed out melodics and low-bubbling percussion.

There's currently a vogue for modern artists reworking the work of soul legends. One of our favourites from said crop has to be this 12" by nu-jazz and broken beat mainstay Atjazz, whose latest efforts come in the form Nina Simone cover, 'See-Line Woman'. Working with Dominique Fils-Aime - a Montreal singer-songwriter noted for taking inspiration from soul icons from the 40s and 60s like Simone and Billie Holiday - the result is a smooth, subdued take on the original Simone B-side. Happier light is shed on a song that originated as a 19th-Century African American folk song for sailors and sex workers.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record ever so slightly warped & creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent working condition***

The latest drop on Glenn Underground's Strictly Jazz Unit features Sandman & Riverside delivering a sumptuous strain of deep house. 'Your Eyes' is impossibly warm and soulful, basking in honey-coated Rhodes and softly processed vocals. As much as the pristine original, the emphasis is also on the remixes on this package. First up is Atlanta master Kai Alce, whose NDATL mix brings a sharper club focus to the track replete with dusky trumpet and choice chord hooks. Then Underground himself steps up on the flip with vocal and instrumental takes on the original that strike a fine balance between the mellow musicality and a sturdy dancefloor snap.

From the peak of David Bowie's glam era, here's one of the all-time greatest albums which is, quite simply, beyond iconic. From the cover photography to every single tune, this is bedded in the popular consciousness like few other records, and so of course it deserves a monumental tribute 50 years after its initial release. All the classics are here from 'Panic In Detroit' to 'The Jean Genie', pressed up as a half-speed remastered edition which will be an essential purchase for all Bowie collectors and devotees, even if they know the album inside and out already.

Japanese jazz great Takehiro Honda began his career with a series of classical hard-bop albums and ended it with a swathe of fine fusion sets. Sandwiched in between you'll find a series of excursions into different sides of the jazz spectrum, including this rare - and genuinely brilliant - set of instrumental and soul-jazz tracks recorded with the assistance of a big-band style 'jazz orchestra'. With Honda's killer keys-work (both on piano and organ) at the centre of the action, the assembled collective dashes between energetic run-throughs of original compositions ('Ain't Tell You A Good Way But', 'Ain't Funky Now') and some genuinely killer covers. In the latter category you'll find a thrilling rendition of Curtis Mayfield's 'Check Out Your Mind', a deep and emotive take on Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On', and a life-affirming interpretation of Otis Redding's 'Sitting on the Dock of the Bay'.

The Strokes's Comedown Machine is often said by fans to be one of the most consistent albums of the much loved band's career. It showed off once again their immaculate knack for irresistible hooks and catchy grooves, all of which had been present over four previous albums but perfected on another level here. Alongside the group's signature sounds are thought-provoking, strange and sexy themes. It wasn't promoted hard but the album still hit the Top 10 of the UK charts and the same over in the US. This limited edition reissue arrives on a lovely limited yellow and red marbled slab of wax.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Split/tear on spine of outer sleeve, but otherwise in perfect working order***

REPRESS ALERT!: Pinky Perzelle, aka Sonny Rooney's debut 'No Games' featuring Eda Eren, is a true labour of love and an ode to his total passion and dedication to multi instrumental record creation without compromise. Almost every instrument was recorded and played by Perzelle at his home studio. Featuring the utterly unique, impassioned and reassuring vocals of British-Turkish artist, Eda Eren, and additional drums from world renowned Malcolm Catto (The Heliocentrics). The lead track is a timeless, heartfelt, funk-ladened portal into a world reminiscent of a cinematic movie scene or an undiscovered gem from another era all-together. The hypnotic 'Remix' from Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold aka Gerry Rooney & Joel Martin, introduces subtle electronica and dubbed out instrumentation. A true lesson in after hours, left-field Balearica. Pinky's own 'Electronic Mix' references early house music and broken-beat electronic drums. Showing yet another side of Perzelle's approach to music making.

The sixth album by Emile Facey under the Plant43 moniker and the seventh release on his Plant43 Recordings imprint since its inception in 2020, Sublunar Tides is his most expressive and stylistically wide ranging to date. Over 52 minutes and nine tracks the album whisks the listener effortlessly from fast-paced dancefloor electro through the slowmotion cloud-soaring of Concrete Breakers, the intricate experimental synths of Perfect Ruin to the lilting, songlike tones of the emotional album closer 'Tides Align'.

A co-founder of London's Bleep43 crew, Facey has been promoting underground electro and techno since the 90's. As a producer he's been releasing records since 2005 with a string of releases on respected scene favourites such as Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk, Semantica, Shipwrec and Cultivated Electronics. He has played live alongside DJ Stingray, ERP/Convextion, Sync 24, Surgeon, Legowelt, Urban Tribe, Svreca, Datassette among many others.

If anything, the hugely prolific Motor City mainstay that is Omar S seems to be getting even more prolific as time goes on. His vast catalogue grows once more here with Fun House, which finds Alister Fawnwoda exploring a wide range of dance music styles alongside guests such as FXHE regular John F.M., plus Mitchell Yoshida, Super Cool Wired, Troi Alexis, Tyesha Blount and more, with all the production, lyrics and mixing taken care of by Omar S himself. The tracks range from seductive deep house to edgy mechanical techno, dubbed out downbeat joints and smooth electronic Detroit soul. It is yet another crucial chapter in the FXHE and Omar S story.

Review: As long as there is hip-hop, debate will rage as to which album by A Tribe Called Quest is their finest. Of course, they're all superb, but 1993's "Midnight Marauders" - their third full-length - may well be the best of all. That's a big call, but we'd ask any doubters to give it another listen. The New York crew is in particularly fine form on the mic throughout, while the backing tracks, which make great use of crunchy, head-nodding beats and hundreds of superb, hand-picked samples, are amongst the most intricately produced, groovy and deep ever committed to wax. It's one of those hip-hop sets that should be in the collection of any committed music head, and not just rap fans.

On the A-Side "Planet Wall" sees horn samples drifting across a firm rhythm and looped organ, while "Mental Kombat" goes in hard with killer synth lines rolling across each other. On the flip, "Ever Body" samples the 1977 Bumblebee Limited disco track "Everybody Dance" to great effect, while "Bad Connection" provides a tough finish with its razor sharp claps and malfunctioning Millsian techno vibe.

On the flip, Drewsky takes over for something more relaxed in comparison, with "4 U All" providing jazzy undertones, "Half of Bat" offering a surprisingly smooth piece of rolling future-funk, and "Shouts Out" taking things down to a hip-hop tempo which sounds like Dilla gone chopped and screwed.

Review: Originally released in 1995, Joe Pippen's "Shake That Booty" may not be the most well known Dance Mania cut but its frenetic cut-up style and ultra-minimal 808 beats seem like the logical missing link between footwork and ghetto house. It's joined on this rare warehouse find by "Soul Train", a more conventional Chicago house jam filled with hands in the air soul samples, "Crazy Edit", which combines a twisted up melody with a "Bang't" vocal that may well have inspired Geeeman's track of the same name, and "Get Buck Wild", which closes proceedings with another distorted piece of ghetto leaning house.

Review: Blackalicious' debut into recorded hip-hop has come to be acknowledged as a seminal album of the 1990's. Chief XCel (in collaboration with DJ Shadow at times) does what should be unthinkable (as he does on Nia and Blazing Arrow as well somehow), and provides beats that match up to the aptly-named Gift of Gab's sensational flow. Guest appearances by Asian Born and Lateef the Dread Piper (known these days as Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker respectively) round out the album. This is the double vinyl Mo Wax version, containing an extra mix of the classic "Swan Lake". Don't miss!

Review: Next in the series of Downwards re-releases is a big one. After a long time out of press, Surgeon's debut LP "Communications" gets re-rubbed with brand new label art and a limited edition clear vinyl pressing (400 copies only). Anyone who knows the history of either Downwards or indeed of Surgeon himself will recognise what a landmark release this was, a clear statement of intent that caused dramatic ripples in the larger techno pond, and ultimately led to his further relationships with Tresor, and high-profile remixes for the likes of Dave Clarke and The Advent etc. Essentially this is an album that shows a hugely important point in his artistic development. Six tracks of raw, metallic techno, created using incredibly simple equipment (usually just one drum machine, one keyboard, and one reverb unit) but where the whole is considerably more than the sum of its parts.

Spend Some Time (version)
Review: R&S continues to combine deep house influences with disco dub vibes. The result is again a deep pulsating, pure groove. Again Paul St Hilaire 'Nices up the place' with his melancholic vocals. A dub version is provided on the B-Side.

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Track 1
Review: Wall of Sound originally dropped the Give 'em Enough Dope series way back in the nineties. Volume Three came in 1996 and is known amongst fans as ofd the best best of the lot. It rounds up house, big beat, downtempo, jungle, drum & bass and more from a wide array of artists. The whole thing is now being reissued on double vinyl and CD and features plenty of classics from enduring names like Les Rythmes Digitales, Q-Burns Abstract Message, Russ Gabriel's Audio Spectrum*, basement jazz, Faze Action and many more. A real classic from the vaults, for sure.

Track 1
Review: The classic song "Miranda", which hasn't been available on wax in over 10 years, finally resurfaces with new mastering and a new package. This is one of the most sought after and beautifully composed works to come out of Detroit in the 90's. Played by everyone across the globe, with luminaries such as Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Kenny Larkin, Carl Craig, Chain Reaction Crew, DJ Rolando, Swayzak, Mad Mike Banks, James Pennington, Felix and countless others. If you are a fan of Basic Channel or Carl Craig this release is one of the most important pieces to the puzzle that is Detroit Techno!

Review: The official anthem to the Omen party staged in the UK in 1991. The 1992 anthem for this party was a track produced by Hardfloor on the Harthouse label. Powerful headbanger classic!!! Contains a famous sample from Led Zeppelin "Whole Lotta Love". I usually don't like that someone samples a well known classic (not mention a "sacred" song like this one), into a dancefloor track. But here there's a very good combination that works! I can imagine this track without Robert Plant's screaming voice LOOOOOOOOOOOVE!!!!!

Review: Check out the 'Mind Games EP'. 'Unsoaked Girl' on the a-side is probably one of the deepest and best works that Rush has ever
delivered. Soulful strings and a bassline that sounds a lot like early Saunderson make it hard to believe that Mr snare-and-bass
has been working here. Wonder why he didn't keep up like that...? One time repress - Part of the 'Clubtracks' series on Cosmic.

Review: After his surprise drop with music writer and producer Blackdown on the Keysound label last month, the enigmatic Burial is now back with a fresh new EP all of his own. It comes on his longtime home of Hyperdub and features two more of his deft designed, ghostly deep dubstep post-nightbus joints. 'Chemz' is a strict raver filled with rushed up sounds, plenty of dance floor love and big hooks that is many different tracks, moods and vibes all rolled into one. As always, these Burial sounds look back to go forwards and do so in thrilling fashion.
