The Knife
The Knife (12")
Cat: NDATL 031. Rel: 20 Oct 21
Deep House
  1. The Knife (6:58)
  2. No Regrets (7:47)
  3. Santa Barbara (7:46)
  4. The Promenade (6:13)
Review: An exciting release this week on Kai Alce's always reliable NDATL Muzik by Detroit techno veteran Claude Young. The Knife is the first time Young has been in the studio in six years and is quite the departure from, say, his seminal Pattern Buffer series. Instead he delves into the more deeper shades of hi-tech soul on this one. We're particularly feeling the soulful and emotive mood music of 'No Regrets' on the A side, while understated B side cut 'Santa Barbara' makes perfect for perfect tackle on the warm-up slot with its a sensual vocals and velvety chords, followed by the late night jazz bar loops of 'The Promenade'.

  2. Crayfish Caper (Masters At Work mix) (5:56)
  3. New Ferrari (Harvey Sutherland Weird Flex 12" mix) (6:09)
Review: Here's a pleasant surprise: a fresh set of remixes of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Melbourne-based band Surprise Chef, whose hard-to-pigeonhole take on cinematic soul contains numerous nods to classic jazz-funk and Brit-funk jams. Masters at Work give their take on 'Crayfish Caper', first joining the dots between Afro-beat, jazz-funk and West London style bruk on the 'Nuyorican Broken' mix, before delivering two house-style revisions - the squelchy, synth-bass-propelled 'Masters at Work Mix' and the tougher, more percussive 'MAW Dub'. The EP's other interpretations come from Harvey Sutherland, whose 'Weird Flex 12" and 'Weird Flex' revisions of 'New Ferrari' add the band's jazz-funk instrumentation and spacey synths to a warming, off-kilter deep house groove.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Wheel Spin (Revision) (4:50)
  2. Giv It Up (Revision) (4:58)
Review: Acclaimed French producer Nicolas Laugier aka The Reflex is back on his Flex7 imprint. The Reflex moniker is part tribute to Nile Rodgers' remix of Duran Duran's 1984 song of the same name and a nod to the Logic Pro production software's Flextime tool, which allows users to alter and sync audio files. It's business as usual on this one, with two remixes direct from the master tapes combining creativity and functionality for maximum dancefloor impact. On the A side you've got the low slung yet elevating soul power of 'Wheel Spin' (Revision), while over on the flip there's the downtown vocal funk of 'Giv It Up' (Revision).

Review: All 4 tracks coming from a mystery selection of The Beeyou Crew, Can you guess who? the seventh instalment in the label brings together the fledging hive of bees for an EP full of colaborations. The A side kicks off the EP with the bouncy beats of Bubbling Crew before coming back for more and double dropping with Drop The Bass on the A2 which is enough to slap the wig off your head. When you flip over to the B the honey keeps dripping with the rolling grooves of No White Lines before rounding off the EP with the driving and slightly spooky We Need To Have A Think

Superstition

Funk
  1. Superstition (5:34)
  2. Shades Of Hades (3:08)
Review: When deciding on tracks to release on '45' for the first time, the Dynamite Cuts team seems to mine a mixture of sought-after sets, familiar favourites and overlooked obscurities. This single falls int the latter category, featuring as it does two killer cuts from Funk In Hell, a 1976 album by library music collective-turned-instrumental funk outfit Button Down Brass (a band founded by trumpeter and arranger Ray Davies). A-side 'Superstition' is simply superb: a down-low cover of Stevie Wonder classic 'Superstition' that sits somewhere between down-low library funk and Blaxploitation movie soundtracks, with a dash of big band funk thrown in. Instrumental flipside 'Shades of Hades' is equally as vibrant, with elongated electric guitar notes, heady hand percussion and spacey synth sounds combining superbly with spy-funk horns and weighty bass.

Will We Ever Dance Again/As Above
Cat: IIB 058. Rel: 18 Oct 21
Balearic/Downtempo
  1. Will We Ever Dance Again (6:49)
  2. As Above (6:01)
Review: If you need a little pick me up as the weather gets colder, darker and wetter, then stick this new now from Coyote on your turntable and feel your woes drain away. It is another classy offering from Is It Balearic across two sides of proudly Balearic-influenced house music. You can picture the scenes when this will go down best - as the sun sinks into the sea in India or Croatia, with a happy and smiling crowd ready for the daytime vibes to make way for something a little naughtier. 'Will We Ever Dance Again' is pure celebratory joy, with swirling chords rising ever higher like a heat haze, then 'As Above' gets playful with squelchy acid, steely drums and a great sense of bounce.

Review: British crime television series Sherlock has proved hugely popular in recent years. The latest adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings have also been hugely enhanced by the soundtrack. That score has been composed by David Arnold and Michael Price, and has won the pair numerous awards including a 2014 EMMY as well as two further nominations for an EMMY and a BAFTA nomination. Their contribution to Sherlock is immeasurable as exemplified by this soundtrack which is thrilling and sinister, playful and suspenseful in equal measure. The music from all three of the first series is captured here on this limited blue vinyl.

Review: Serbian label serves up the third Disco Fruit Sampler release here with re-edits, revisions and reworks from fruit bowl favourites and a new member - Brian SNR from South Africa. On the A side Hotmood fires up the furnace for the disco inferno that is 'My Dream Come True' followed by Mitiko getting some slo-mo and seriously low slung funk in effect on 'Are You Ready'. Over on the flip, loshi lends his deft hand to one that's certainly an oldie but definitely still a goodie, on 'Yes It Is'.

The Different Shapes EP features the soulful Prescription Records style of 'Make You Feel' which is as uplifting as you like it, and that organ solo is just wonderful. It's followed by a fantastic Mike Millrain remix that's packed full of swing as well as the Harddrive sampling thump of 'Inside Deep'. Rhythm Vibe is a sub label of the more established Plastik People Recordings that Cotterell has been running since 2016.

  2. Obame (dub mix) (7:02)
  3. Zone (7:55)
  4. Zone (Drum mix) (7:55)
Review: It's a little unclear of the intentions behind London-based Japanese duo Afrobuddha's name, but on their first release they were certainly working in collaboration with African musicians. Afrobuddha's two previous 12"s came out in the first half of the last decade, and have since become highly sought after. Mysticisms now gathers the tracks together on this 12", leading in with 'Obame', which was originally recorded with the Kakatsitsi Drummers in Accra, Ghana. Both the original and the dub mix channel a powerful Afrobeat flavour, with the source material from the Ghanaian singers and players front and centre of the mix. 'Zone' takes things back into a more club-oriented sphere, with plenty of synth layers and some nimble hand drumming from Davide Salvietti, which of course comes to the fore on the purely percussive 'Drum Mix'.

Review: Edinburgh's Athens Of The North label is endlessly flawless and this time around they pull together the special lovers rock covers they put out at the end of last year onto a superbly strong 12 track compilation. It arrives just in time for the warmer months and has been curated by Sam Don and overseen by label boss Euan Fryer. Standouts include Christine Lewin's lush take on the heavily sampled "Juicy Fruit" while the lo-fi bliss of Al Charles's "Outstanding" is another one to swell the heart and sooth the soul. For more sentimental moments check Family Love's "Do Me Baby." Overall, though, this is a must buy.

Review: Pilot comes correct with a third new release in quick succession. We were big fans of the first two and this one is another muscular, action packed slab of wax from North Phase. Once again he draws on many different genres to cook up his floor filling beats. 'Electronic Funk' is a bit of a throw back to when the Plump DJs were good, while 'D1000' then gets more down and dirty on scuzzy bass and electro pops. 'Escape & Evasion' is the most heady of the lot with its sparse atmosphere and old school breaks and 'Halo' closes on a cosmic borne beat wig out.

Included is an unreleased vinyl mix of Costin's psychedelic folk balearic cut 'Disconnected' from 2015 on the first side. Review: Kim Ann Foxman takes us direct to the heart of a sweaty warehouse rave with these two red hot new singles. 'Connection' is all bright stabs, sci-fi effects and coruscated old school house jack that is impossible to ignore. Luca Lozano smooths it out slightly and races ahead with a big baseline that gets you making elastic moves. Foxmann's 'Magic Magic' then keeps up the rave house vibe but with a tinge of trancey-euphoria in the big, bright synths. Matisa's remix is all about smoother house pleasures. This is functional music with a big heart.

Review: Ralph Lamb and his confrere Andy Ross are The Family Fortune. They serve up their own unique twists on sounds you would expect from James Brown with classic dance floor vibes and powerful vocals from the one and only Jessica Darling. This fresh new slice of funk gold comes on tasty 7" via the Skyline label. Both tracks are super short but super sweet. Up first is 'Andy Cafe '68' (part 1) with its prickly drumming, big horn work and playful swing. Flip it over and 'Andy Cafe '68 (part 2)' works the chords more but aside from that carries on where part one left off. Two tidy bits of funk of ever we did hear them.

Review: The Mankunku Quartet's Yakhal Inkomo album is one of South African jazz's most revered, and one Gilles Peterson has included before in a special "best of genre" radio show. It might clock in at only just over thirty minutes but there is pure bliss packed into the four compact tunes. Initially, the record was only put out on a small local label so it soon became a much sought after and hugely expensive classic after it was recorded by tenor saxophonist Winston "Mankunku" Ngoz in 1968. The b-side track 'Doodlin' is a Horace Silver composition and 'Doodlin', and 'Bessie's Blues' is a John Coltrane number, but Mankunku's own tracks on the a-side more than hold their own.

Review: Of all his many albums and live shows, A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle is often said by fans to be one Coltrane's greatest works. Until recently, this was a long lost performance from the iconic saxophonist. Recorded in 1964, it is only the second full live performance recording known after one from the Festival Mondial du Jazz Antibes in France from 1965. The quartet for the original recording of one was made up of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones next to Coltrane himself, but this recording was boosted by Pharoah Sanders on tenor sax and Donald Garrett on second bass. It's a suite packed with spirit, power and soul.

  2. Lovin' You (Smoove Disco dub remix) (4:26)
Review: The first 45 from the Belfast-based Superfly Funk & Soul label - an offshoot of a long-running club night helmed by DJ Pete Brady - is something of a doozy. It comes courtesy of the Honeyshotz, a studio band set up by Ian Stevens (bass player with The Getiup and The King Rooster) as a vehicle for his own compositions. In its A-side 'radio edit' form, 'Loving You' is a Clavinet-happy chunk of jazz-funk influenced, 1970s dancefloor soul revivalism. It naturally boasts superb musicianship but also some stellar lead vocals from Sabina Challenger. Scene heavyweight Smoove handles remix duties, delivering a heavyweight dub that adds extra percussion, beefs up the bass and showcases almost every instrument in turn. It's a weighty, effortlessly funky revision.

This double LP collection sees Hill chart Gospel music through it's 70s and 80s period as the influences of nascent disco and boogie bore fruit. The chance to own the absolutely belting cover version of Sylvester's "I Need You" by Ricky Womack & Christian Essence in edited Joey Negro format will mean instant purchase for many current disc jockeys, but there is plenty more spiritually enlightened disco heat around it. Dean Blunt is nothing short of an enigma. Whether you're reading one of his interviews of few words, listening to the records that seem to both celebrate the avant-garde and obsess over it, or watching him descend into strange, otherworldly cacophonies on stage, usually shrouded in smoke, he's never really been an easy guy to pin down. And that's exactly what he's always been going for.

It's something of a surprise, then, to learn that Black Metal 2, the long-awaited, seven years in the making sequel to his critically acclaimed Black Metal, is actually pretty straight forward. In a Dean Blunt kind of way. Opening on the compressed strings and near-spoken word of 'Vigil', the record takes us into the deep dark depths of strange, hook-fuelled guitar poetry, and we never want to find our way back.

Review: First released in the UK by Tottenham-based Atra Records in 1974, The Black Breast Has Produced Her Best Flesh of My Skin Blood By Blood has long been considered one of the edgiest roots albums of the period and a must-have for serious reggae collectors. The album resulted in its creator, the sadly departed Keith Hudson, being dubbed "the dark prince of reggae". Listening back to this welcome reissue, it's easy to see why. For starters, the lyrical content is highly politically charged and righteous, while Hudson's weighty musical arrangements are far more trippy, hazy and dimly lit than those found on most roots reggae records of the period. This edition also includes three additional tracks not found on the original release, plus exhaustive sleeve notes from Hudson biographer Vincent Ellis.

Review: The unstoppable East End Dubs launches yet another vinyl series here: introducing the first edition of the Collaborations series which features the label chief teaming up with some of the biggest names in tech house. Four cuts on this one: on the A side you've got 'Stargaze' in conjunction with Mannheim's Fabe (Salty Nuts) where they serve up some minimal boompty-funk, while C1 is with the ever reliable Sidney Charles on the hypnotic swing of 'Mental Stealth'. On side D is where it gets serious, on the moody, heads-down groove of 'Delicut' with fellow Londoner Rich NxT, and ending with the infectious afterhours bounce of 'Static Sea' with the ascendant Cuartero.

Review: Following the success of her debut album Man Made this year, here's a reissue of London artist Aria Wells aka Greentea Peng's Rising EP from back in 2019 on Different. She worked with different producers on this one such as Fred Cox, Kiko, Samo and Earbuds who lent their various talents. Peng's soothing vocal delivery is accompanied perfectly by hypnotic polyrhythms on songs like 'Risin', the blunted urban blues of 'Inna City', and the broken beat neo-soul of 'Liberation' being just some highlights on this terrific EP.

Review: The Spaceman Reissue Program from Fat Possum Records and Spiritualized now gets the last in the series with Let It Come Down, the band's epic fourth album. This record was the first from a rather new-looking lineup for the band after the previous members melted away following intensive tours around Ladies And Gentlemen.... John Coxon's studio is where the band laid down the initial framework for these tunes before a total of 115 different musicians were reportedly enlisted down at Air and Abbey Road Studios to hone what ended up as these 11 songs. They have always been a widescreen band, but Spiritualized outdid even themselves on this one.

Review: Nothing beats a good old bit of jungle, and this surely is a good old bit of jungle from the Dutch label Vibes 93. Here we have four classic samples dropped into big tunes and pressed on turquoise vinyl to pump any party. 'I Need Your Lovin'' (dirty '97 mix) has a killer vocal that will never fail, then 'Sweet Love' douses you in rolling drums and heartfelt piano chords as well as another old school soul vocal. It's Muniz's '5 On It' that lends the next tune is deep baseline and catchy hook, before closer 'No Diggity' reworks the hip hop classic into a high energy roller complete with the OG keys.

Review: Regis and Female's Againstnature album from 2000 gets the full reissue treatment here by Berlin label, Tresor. Released under their given names Karl O'Connor and Peter Sutton, the record is a noted zenith of the Birmingham techno scene of the era. It has had a major influence on the music that was released in the years after and has here been remastered for a fresh double vinyl pack. As well as the original sounds, there is also 'Theme From Streetwalke,' a track that was previously released on a Tresor compilation. The tracks are heavy but relatively stripped back. They're packed with texture and atmosphere and never less than hugely compelling.

Review: Dystopian dramatist Djedjotronic is your pilot for this intergalactic trip on International Chrome. It is the label's ninth EP and is another standout offering that starts with twisted electro bass, cyborg funk and heavy, steel-plated drums. 'Slap' then layers up the melodies in a way that recalls Kraftwerk, but the drums and synths around them are much more militant and brutalist. 'Death Clock' then comes first as a searing, visceral rework by Jensen Interceptor and a darker, slower VIP Mix, Last of all, 'Statistics' closes out with bumping bass and crunchy hits that fizz and hiss.

Review: The legendary GAMM is as reliable as the sunrise and sunset each day. It always comes through with the DJ freindly, party ready sounds from whatever genre it sees fit. Here it is Japan's Dai San who comes back to the label with a second EP that finds him heading off on a jazzy escapade. The three tunes take in dazzling disco-jazz, fantastic fusion-funk and deep rare grooves that touch you to your core. 'Sundance' opens up in busy, peak time fashion with plenty of Japanese influences over an Azymuth style carnival beat. The flip is for the deeper workouts including the spaced-out and highly melodic 'Nite Sprite'.

  4. Burial - "Space Cadet" (9:21)
Review: This surprise new EP finds celebrated music writer and producer Blackdown on the same EP as Burial for the first time since the latter remixed the former 15 years ago. There is a heavy Detroit influence in the far-sighted synths of 'This Journey' (VIP), with angsty vocal samples stitched into the bristling, swinging rhythm. Burial's 'Dark Gethsemane' bares all the producer's usual hallmarks - pitched up vocals, deft samples and a catchy 2-step shuffle. Blackdown then offers up a remix filled with chattery claps and UK funky rhythms to open the B-side, while Burial's 'Space Cadet' is another 2-step classic with its heady way up in the heavens.

Review: RECOMMENDED
It's hard not to be very impressed by Glaswegian electronic experimenter Pub. According to mythology (well, the internet), he started making music at the tender age of 14, and within three years had started his own label, Ampoule Records, since going on to release for the likes of Talent Hoover, Earplug and Vertical Form, all of which should feel blessed to have him on board.

Single is basically a compendium of his trilogy of EPs on Ampoule, now 20 years young. To describe the contents as dub techno would be unfair and over-simplistic, but it's certainly not a million miles from that camp. Stripped down but strangely detailed, this is the sound of a great soundsystem revealing the hidden depths of tracks that might otherwise feel very minimal, ambient soundscapes that ebb and flow intertwined with the more dancefloor friendly efforts. In short, you will not tire of these tunes.

Review: Many will be familiar with Milton Wright's Friends & Buddies album, a much-sampled Miami soul classic that's been in demand since its' release in 1975. Intriguingly, that version of the album was Wright's second version; the first slipped out in limited numbers on promo before the master tapes were destroyed in a fire, forcing the artist to re-record it. This, then, is the first release of Wright's original version, rescued from permanent obscurity by Athens of the North. Notably folksier, looser and breezier than the version we've all come to know and love, Original Friends & Buddies sounds more like Terry Callier than Wright's later output. Happily, he tells the whole story himself in the excellent sleeve notes.

Review: We're not sure what our answer to the question is exactly, but Honne seem intent on going out with a smile and a feeling of self-satisfaction, albeit not necessarily a bang. Hopeless romantics in the truest sense, Let's Just Say The World Ended A Week From Now What Would You Do? sees Honne wearing their upbeat, glass-half-full hearts on sleeves.

Of course that means it might not be for everyone, but naysayers will never be offended. As for those onside, this is quality saxophone-laden, lo-fi pop that has one foot in funk, another in R&B, and eyes firmly set on the broadest audience out there. If that sounds like something you've got a problem with, move on, but we guarantee you'll be missing out on something pretty special.

Review: Rotterdam-based Ukrainian duo Antenna has got a super discography that includes outings on all the finest labels out there from Pinkman to Guidance to their own Antenna International US. Here they return to Clone Royal Oak for four tracks of deeply atmospheric house music. There is a big and tribal feel to 'Timbales' which is defined by thunderous hits of the eponymous drum as well as some spooky vocals. 'MDF' is more shadowy and paired back. The drum designs are so fresh it's a killer groove before things get all aggy and in your face with the off-balance stop and twitchiness of 'Bodja.' 'Park Life' closes out in reflective fashion with lush harmonies swirling around a big open space.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Versalife continues a prolific run of deep and dynamic electro soul with this double pack on 20/20 Vision. The scene is set early on with the smoky pads and crisp drums of "Binary Worlds" - equal parts deep-diving machine soul and body-popping 808 funk. Things get nastier with the strafing monosynth punctuating "Covert Ops" and the edgy creep of "Shadow Union" on to "Manifold"s luxuriant sound world. The quality level remains staggeringly high as we trip through classically informed electro of every shade, adding yet another accomplished payload to the formidable Versalife catalogue.

Review: The hard-digging record fiends at Kalita are back with more brilliance. This one is the first-ever retrospective of work by Jamaican-born artist Desmond Chambers. The first tine is a proudly politically aware tune previously only avialbel on his 1987 album Tiger Born, while the single 'The Morning Show' has before now only been available as the B side of little known single 'I Have Seen Love In Your Eyes.' The two other tracks are mega cult, hugely loved acid-infused dub snakers with boogie-infused rhythms. Original copies will cost you a huge amount so make sure you snap this one up asap.
