Detroit Get Down EP
Cat: 4EVR 007. Rel: 12 Oct 21
Deep House
  1. On My Own (feat Moodymann & Kasan Belgrave) (7:21)
  2. How We Get Down (In Detroit) (6:37)
  3. Words Can't Express (feat Britt Frappier & Ian Fink) (6:24)
  4. Lisbon Nights (feat Sarah Elizabeth Charles - Minor Invention edit) (3:54)
  5. Lisbon Nights (feat Sarah Elizabeth Charles - Darrius Quince edit) (3:26)
Review: A former protege of local legends such as Marcus Belgrave and Mike Banks, the Motor City's Jon Dixon serves up more hi-tech jazz here on the Detroit Get Down EP - on his very own 4evr 4wrd imprint. Features the deep and spiritual house journey of 'On My Own' featuring the inimitable Moodymann & Kasan Belgrave, followed by the elevating techno soul of "How We Get Down (In Detroit)". Over on the flip, we have a couple of edits of the utterly hypnotic "Lisbon Nights" (feat Sarah Elizabeth Charles) with our pick being the Minor Invention version.

  1. Wine (6:46)
  2. Babeh (4:11)
  3. I Know (5:17)
Review: As is often the way, this new one Instinct is as rude as flicking the bird in a pair of Nike TNs and a full tech fleece. It comes from Soul Mass Transit System, a Leeds based duo made up of D. Jason and Baby J known for their retro tinged garage bangers. 'Wine' is all naughty bass, slamming drums and jungle samples, while 'Babeh' gets more down and dirty on tightly programmed kicks, dark bass and echoing vocals that are all made for the peak time. Last of all, 'I Know' is a cluster of percussive hits and reversed effects, warped bass and twisted rhythms that make for perfect body music.

Review: Is there a label as iconic Nervous in all of house music? Probably not. The New York staple is responsible for shaping and reshaping the genre many times over the years and in 2021 turns an impressive 30. Of course, there are plenty of celebrations going on to mark the occasion, including a bumper multi-part compilation feature all the label's many golden grooves and classic tunes from over the years. Next to enduring label associates like David Morales and Mood II Swing, Armand Van Helden and Kim English, plenty of new school names get in on the act such as Danny Howard, Darius Syrossian and Gerd Janson. Superb.

Review: They don't call him the Stevie Wonder of house music for nothing: Kerri Chandler brings musicality and unbridled joy to everything he does. For this one, there is even more of a celebratory and raptors feeling than normal because of the appearance of Rev F. L. Brown. His impassioned, gravelly toned sermons are cut up and dropped into one of Kerri's timeless house beats, and the results are exceptional. HIs famous kicks punk as heavily as always, the chords are simple but effective, and the whole thing is sure to become a classic that can always be reached for to make a dance floor erupt. Take your pick of the different versions, because they all hit home.

  2. Shhh...t (5:49)
  3. 420 Reve (4:21)
  4. Locked Steps (5:33)
Review: Laidlaw and Jamie Mannion's Subee label (itself a spin-off from BEEYOU), strides into its fourth release following excellent drops from Haass, b0n & t3x3 and Mathijs Smit. Committed to the tech house underground, the label now offers up some bubbling party tackle from French producer Aladdin. Even if the name isn't instantly familiar, the tunes are so damn catchy they'll soon be staples in your bag. 'GIVEMETHEFUNK' bounces with a 90s garage house organ riff which gets smoothed out by subtly dubby FX touches and an overall moodiness to balance out the boisterous rhythm section. The swinging bounce abounds on 'Shhh...t' while '420 Reve' offers up a more clattering, bleep-flecked kind of old-skool. 'Locked Steps' keeps the pressure up, ensuring this 12" stays firmly at the front of the pile when you're thinking about artfully crafted tackle to whip the crowd up good n' proper.

The record was noted for its innovative recording techniques at the time and was met with critical acclaim as a result and went on to receive multi-platinum certifications in several territories as a result.

  4. Sun Raves (Maher Daniel remix) (7:52)
Review: North Phase is an emergent collaborative project from James Burnham and Robert James, both already well-established in the minimal tech house scene under their own steam. In joining forces they're turning their focus towards breakbeat, having already appeared on Pilot opposite Kolter. This time around, they're going it alone with three original bombs of rolling breaks honed into a sharp, DJ-friendly unit. 'Look Around' is the big, chunky workout in contrast to the crafty, organ-licked touch of 'Eternals'. 'Sun Raves' meanwhile takes things into deep, evocative territory and comes off as the strongest track on the record in the process. So much so, Maher Daniel stepped up to remix it and turned it into a sparkling electro-breaks turn for sweet and spiritual sesh heads.

Review: Butter Side Up started as a party in Leeds, then made a successful move to London, then also became a label which has so far proved to be just as popular with the real heads of the underground scene. Every EP gets lapped up and this sixth one is not about to spoil that track record. It's a fresh four tracker from Basement Space that opens with the rugged electro-techno sounds of 'Cosmonaut.' Things get more silky smooth on 'Domino' which is a perfect bit of 90s tinged tech house with cosmic references and sci-fi motifs. 'Equilibrium' opens up the flip with more well crafted breakbeats and balmy pad work before the most spaced out breaks of them all take 'Neptune Sunrise' off into some future world. Lovely stuff.

Review: She might be more well known these days for her open letters to Miley Ray Cyrus or public struggles with mental health, but this So Far The Best of reminds us just why Sinead O'Connor is so famous in the first place. It brings together the very best tunes from her four albums and was originally released in 1997, so of course, includes her ubiquitous and global smash Number 1 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is included, as are earlier singles 'Troy' and 'Mandinka', all of which showcase her fearless style and a rich array of emotions. 'Heroine' and 'Just Like U Said It Would B' are included for the first time having in the past only been available on the US version.

It was initially recorded between Vienna and New York in 2004 and 2006 with each artist responding to the other's compositions. Accompanying text says that the record fuses "unstructured and imaginative qualities of improvisation with the satisfying sculpture of composition." In short, it is a powerful ambient album with a quiet but devastating artistry. Heavy chords linger in the air, distant shakers take your mind away, foggy atmospheres are run through with gentle winds. It is beautifully melancholic.

Melodies Record Club #002: Ben UFO Selects
  1. Laurie Spiegel - "Drums" (7:12)
  2. Olof Dreijer - "Echoes From Mamori" (13:02)
Review: The high class Melodies International reissue label co-run by Floating Points and Elliot Bernard is back with the seance in its Melodies Record Club series. This time it is blistering club DJ Ben UFO who gets his pick after Four Tet had his go earlier in the year. The two tunes he pick have long been staples in his set either though on the surface of it neither are typical club tunes. They have never before been available on vinyl for that reason but we're glad they are now. 'Drums' is off Laurie Spiegel's 1980 experimental album The Expanding Universe and is all oscillating synths and computer generated percussion while Olof Dreijer from the Swedish band the Knife offers 'Echoes From Mamori' on the flip, a more tropical and whimsical cut of new age licked house made from arpeggios and frog samples.

Now he's stepping forth with his biggest belters to date on Return To Disorder, kicking off with the massive 'Danger' featuring certifiable legend Paris The Black Fu on vocal duties. 'Floorwax' is also packing some club scene clout into its electro fantasy, with the mighty Foremost Poets sneaking some spooky lyrics into the mix. On the flip, 'Floorwax' gets remixed by Cardopusher and Hrdvision, who respectively jack the track up and freak it right out, widening the scope of the record without leaving the seedy ambience Return To Disorder prefers to lurk in.

Review: It would be fair to say that De Las Colonias Del Rio De La Plata is something of a little-known gem. Recorded in two days in Buenos Aries back in the autumn of 1976, the album remains the sole recorded output of Argentine keyboardist and producer Jorge Lopez Ruiz's jazz-fusion outfit, Viejas Raices. The album itself has long been sought-after by Latin jazz collectors, hence this handy - if frustratingly limited - vinyl reissue. Musically, it's a blast from start to finish, with Lopez Ruiz's electric piano and ARP synthesizer sounds riding extra-percussive Latin jazz grooves and some seriously groovy upright bass. Alternately floor-friendly and pleasingly laidback, the album's funky beauty and impressive musicianship is only heightened by the lack of fiery horns.

Review: Javi Frias has earned a solid reputation as a producer on the international disco scene since he began releasing his edits and reworks back in 2015. However, this year, during confinement, he decided to put editing aside to unleash his creativity and start recording his own productions, playing with synthesizers, electric pianos, syncopated basses and tribal percussion, and the result is this 'Sunset Disco EP'. A collection of songs that take us to a summer sunset on a beach in paradise that represent a huge leap in the career of this artist. The A side begins with 'Give Love', a hedonistic and melancholic disco song, followed by 'Noche Tropical', with Balearic overtones and reminiscences of a Caribbean party. Side B opens with 'Are You Really Fellas?', a funky little number featuring jazzy guitars and smashing bass. 'Dance With Me' brings us back to the field of the emotional and evocative disco. And finally 'Musical Connection', with touches of reggae downtempo perfect to say goodbye to this eternal and warm sunset.

Review: They're the biggest but most hated band on the planet, but that will never stop Coldplay. The band has long been at the top of the pop-rock world and once again Music of the Spheres is likely to keep them there. It is an album rather less wrought with emotional tension than they are known for but still has one eye firmly on the cosmos, like much of their material. In fact, there is a loose concept here that revolves around a distant solar system. The lead single, 'My Universe,' features K-pop kings BTS and is already a number one, and the rest of the tunes are so unashamedly big they will likely follow.

  1. Caught (5:44)

Review: We continue to have no real clue about who or what is behind the DSO label. They seem to like to serve up cheeky and divisive house edits that could erupt a dane floor or turn off the more serious chin strokers out there. But we have a confession to make: we Leo a bit of cheeky playfulness and this is another one that offers just that. It is R&B badgirl Kelis who gets cut up and stitched into a house beat on 'Caught' and for its nostalgic old school feels alone it is worth a play. The sample source for flip side tune 'Don't Ever' is a little more heady - it's a vocal from super smooth neo-soul don Maxwell. His buttery vocals sound great when paired with a similarly tender groove.

He hits the ground running with 'Everybody Get Up', sneakily adding new beats, bass and musical touches to a string-drenched old disco jam, before applying the same house-style approach to a hybrid disco/electrofunk cut on 'Get On The Floor'. Over on side B, 'Give It To Me' is a chunkier and more bass-heavy disco-house bumper, while 'Do It You Got It' is a rolling, filter-sporting revision of a particularly spacey, turn-of-the-80s disco workout.

Review: Electronic icon Jeff Mills links up with fellow Detroit talent Rafael Leafar for this one on his own Axis, and it is yet another sublime exploration of the cosmos through the medium of techno. Leafar brings all his next level multi-instrumentalist skills and strong love of jazz to the duo and when combined with Mills' ability to speak through his machines, it makes for a unique record. The icy percussion rolls deep, taking you into another dimension each and every time while the noodling sax brings sombreness and soul. Big, splashy cymbals, dark chords and a real sense of mystery and intrigue keep you utterly locked throughout.

Review: The latest drop on Glenn Underground's Strictly Jazz Unit features Sandman & Riverside delivering a sumptuous strain of deep house. 'Your Eyes' is impossibly warm and soulful, basking in honey-coated Rhodes and softly processed vocals. As much as the pristine original, the emphasis is also on the remixes on this package. First up is Atlanta master Kai Alce, whose NDATL mix brings a sharper club focus to the track replete with dusky trumpet and choice chord hooks. Then Underground himself steps up on the flip with vocal and instrumental takes on the original that strike a fine balance between the mellow musicality and a sturdy dancefloor snap.

  8. Taggy Matcher - "Radioactivity" (4:00)
Review: There's nothing particularly revolutionary about the idea behind the Disco Reggae compilation series - contemporary artists deliver reggae-soaked covers of boogie and disco classics - but the sets themselves never fail to impress. The latest volume, the fourth in total, once again contains some genuinely brilliant covers. It opens with a wonderfully woozy and sumptuous take on Roy Ayers' 'We Live in Brooklyn' by Booker Gee's Soul Sugar outfit and ends with a frankly genius dub-wise take on Kraftwerk's 'Radioactivity' courtesy of Taggy Matcher. In between, you'll find highlights including a reggae-boogie revision of Chemise's 'She Can't Love You' (again by Taggy Matcher), a wonderfully soulful re-interpretation of Errol Walker classic 'In These Times' (here re-titled 'Summertime') by Wolfgang, and a killer collaboration between Blundetto and Booker Gee.

Extropy marks the final chapter in an accidental triptych of Astronomy-related exploratory albums on A Strangely Isolated Place. From the creation of the Earth and the Moon in his debut album on ASIP, Theia; to the relationship the Earth holds with the greater Galaxy in the follow-up album, Empire (2018). To now, Extropy, and the indefinite growth of the life we hold so dearly.

Review: As the title sneakily suggests, the latest volume in DJ Soopasoul's essential "Soopastole Edits" series sees the prolific re-editor and mash-up merchant take his scalpel to all time disco classic "We Are Family". We could be wrong, but it sounds like it was created using the multi-track parts, focusing as it does for much of the duration on a stripped-back, DJ-friendly groove, selected vocal snippets and delay-laden musical elements not always audible on the original version. Over on the flipside "Cosmo On The Groove" version, he takes a slightly different approach, adding a classic old school hip-hop acappella to an expertly cut-up version of the track that utilizes a little more of the sing-along chorus.

  1. H (4:25)

Review: When it comes to crafting party-starting joints featuring classic hip-hop and R&B vocals, few producers can match the output of Gallic rework fiend Jerome Potin AKA Moar. He's in prime form on this ultra-limited "45" too. A-side 'H' crafts a rolling, 4/4 hip-hop tempo beats out of some classic disco licks and then adds Ol' Dirty Bastard and Kelis' vocals from one of the biggest hip-hop hits of 1999. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. Flipside 'HH' is equally as funky and accessible, with cut-up edit effects, rubbery slap-bass sounds, jangling acoustic guitar chords, warming synths and the lead vocal from a much-loved R&B jam. Tons of fun!

Review: 15 months after dropping his first Versions EP of re-edits and reworks, sometime Shall Not Fade and SB Jamz producer Kassian has finally got round to readying volume two. If you're looking for bona-fide peak-time thrills, we'd recommend A-side 'If You Want Me', a subtly straightened and toughened-up re-arrangement of Barbara Roy and Ecstasy, Passion & Pain's 1981 disco anthem 'If You Want Me'. Kassian teases out some of the Italo-disco style elements audible on some of the early mixes of the boogie-era track, adding some twerkin' acid lines towards the end of the track. Over on the flip, 'So Nice' is a bouncy, shuffling, house-style tweak of a gorgeous disco bumper of unknown origin.

Review: To mark 30 years in the game, legendary NYC house label Nervous Records has decided to release a series of compilations that pair classic cuts with new remixes. Louie Vega kicks off the first volume by remixing one of his own productions, Willie Ninja's 'I'm Hot', reinventing the analogue-rich deep house bumper as a disco-centric, while Radio Slave turns Ralph Falcon's sleazy 'Break You' into a stomping techno anthem. Tensnake adds warmth and wooziness to The Messenger's 'End This Hate' (a classic Todd Edwards production), Agent Orange delivers a warehouse-ready techno version of Phuture Trax's 'Future Groove' and Dr Packer emphasizes the gospel influences in Kim English's 'Unspeakable Joy'. Arguably best of all though is Kevin McKay's muscular electro-disco mix of Byron Stingly's superb Sylvester cover, 'Yu Make Me Feel Mighty Real'.

Review: Casual Connection (real name Lukasz Ru-Kasu) has been in the edit game for a while, with his first digital-only collection of disco and boogie revisions appearing on Alpaca Edits seven years ago. Here he returns with a third 12" single of his own, which also marks his first release of 2021. A-side 'Working Scrubs' is a clever revision of a '90s R&B classic that places the now iconic group vocals atop a rubbery, synth-heavy backing track that sits somewhere between nu-disco and '80s synth-funk. 'Gold Diggin' is another mash-up of sorts, with a much-loved hip-hop vocal sitting atop a heavy, bustling, all action rhythm-track full of stuttering drum hits and cut-up, hip-house style vocal stabs. Proper party-starting music.

Review: For the latest "45" in the Dusty Donuts series of edits and mash ups, the Berlin-based crew has turned to long-time crew member Jim Dunloop, a jazz-trained pianist-turned-producer best known for his work alongside Marc Hype. He begins with "Spirit De Rio", a wonderfully warm, head-nodding, hip-hop style revision of a summery-sounding old samba gem rich in dewy-eyed female vocals and glistening guitars. Long-time friend, and occasional collaborator Grizzly Adams lends a hand on flipside cut "Different Sweetnuts", a deep and woozy revision of a fragile, female-fronted soul number that wraps drowsy elements from the pair's source material around a bass-heavy beat.

Review: The deep house maestro that is Ron Trent has been tapped up for some of his remix expertise by the good folk at Leng. He is charged with tackling Harks & Mudd's 'Susta' and turns out two versions. His opening remix is all grown up Balearic sounds. Gentle percussion is scattered over the leggy house drums, noodling Rhodes chords bring colour and a breathy female vocal layers in the sun kissed soul. It's an immediate classic. On the flip comes his dub, which is more fleshy and elastic, but with just as much soul and warmth.

Review: There is, quite simply, so much to like about Vanishing Twin. In many ways they can be your everything, providing that everything is sitting in a room packed with psychedelic patterns, contemplating mind expansion beyond opioids. If you're looking for abrasive sounds, this ain't for you. However, those searching for a woozy combination of 1960s hippy and weird prog folk will find themselves at home.

Even that description feels reductive. 'Light Vessel', for example, sounds like the unearthed tapes from electro-pop year zero. Or not. 'Tub Erupt' is a spy film intro on adrenalin, while 'The Lift' comes across like a religious cult got lost and wound up at Woodstock. Or maybe Woodstock was the cult? Either way this is one of those 'buckle up' jobs.

Review: Idris Bena & Paolo Mosca take care of one side each of this tasty new 12" on Opia. Their brand of techno is hugely funky, with a healthy reverie for the past but also a passion to take things forwards. Bena kicks off with 'Earth Delight' which is all happy melodic business and tight, kinetic drums. 'Blood Moon' again brings retro video game melodies to shimmering, well polished tech drums and 'Home' gets busier with the chords and layers up woodpecker hits and sheet metal snares. The b-side is no less intergalactic with 'Different Places' riding a nice buffed up neon bassline while synth modulations get freaky, and last of all 'Orion Trance' brings the subtle waves of euphoria with its trance chords and jacked beats.

Review: After resurfacing earlier in the year with their first single since the noughties, 'Mattel', Masters at Work are not resting on their laurels. Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez and Lil' Louie Vega are in prime form on 'We Did It For Years', a typically rhythmically sweaty and on-point club cut simply dripping with dancefloor energy. The EP-opening 'Main Mix' is genuinely brilliant, with the pair peppering a heavy, Gonzalez-programmed beat - reminiscent of such classics as 'The Nervous Track' - with rave-igniting stabs, twisted electronic sounds, classic NYC house organ sounds and spoken word snippets. The accompanying KenLou Dub is a darker, tougher and even more percussive affair - raw, stripped back and deliciously weighty - while the 'Beats' version is a high-grade DJ tool that runs for no less than six minutes.

Review: Some high-grade hip-hop re-edit action here, as cut-and-paste supremo DJ Bounce takes his rusty scalpel to two classic rap cuts. On the A-side he delivers a light-touch tweak of Rakim's 1997 boom-bap classic 'Guess Who's Back', adding a few more chops, slightly heavier low-end grunt, and DJ-friendly intros and outros. Over on the flip, he takes us back further in time to the point when Eric B and Rakim were still hardcore hip-hop's premier Golden Era twosome. Bounce somehow manages to add even more energy and delicious jazziness to the pair's all-time classic 'Don't Sweat The Technique'. Again, it's another light-touch revision, but that's fine by us given that the original barely needs tampering with.
