Here Comes The Sun (Francois K remix) (8:56)
Turn Me On (Tony Humphries Got U Turned On dub) (7:50)
Save Me (Coldcut remix) (6:38)
Review: South Street's latest missive gathers together a trio of club-friendly remixes of Nina Simone classics that first appeared on the 2006 compilation "Remixed & Reimagined". Francois K impresses with an A-side revision of Simone's celebrated cover of Beatles classic "Here Comes The Sun" that sounds like a long lost Larry Heard record from his classic Fingers Inc. period. Those after something a little more rolling and funk-fuelled should wrap their ears around Tony Humphries' Dub of "Turn Me On", which boasts a seductive mixture of Romanthony style hard loops and rumbling, UK garage influenced bass. Completing the package is Coldcut's fine re-imagining of "Save Me", which places Simone's heart-arching vocal atop skittish, club-ready drums and looped guitars.

Review: Gold standard house label Razor-N-Tape looks back to Guinu's modern LP of Brazilian jazz-funk, Palago^, and has some key cuts from it remixed by a selection of assured studio hands here. First up, Jose Marquez reworks the title track into a heavy and hypnotic jam with big percussion. The Faze Action remix of 'Haha Fe' brings some fresh disco sounds and RNT stalwart Diogo Strausz brings big room synth energy and cosmic vocal filters. Last of all, Brazilian Carrot Green brings the 80s boogie brilliance to 'Porao de Ferro.'

If (Mathew Johnson & The Mole remix)
Cursor Item Only (Peter Van Hoesen remix)
He Said (Blue Hour remix)
Review: There's a definite "no-nonsense" feel about this latest Tobias EP on Ostgut Ton. Simply titled Remixes, it sees a quartet of producers turn in typically locked-in re-interpretations of classic Tobias tracks. Matthew Jonson and The Mole join forces to turn "If" into a ten-minute chunk of broken tech-house - all bubbling electronic rhythms, relentlessly bumpy acid lines and crackly late night textures. Peter Van Hoesen takes a trip back to the early '90s with his spiralling, acid-flecked rework of "Cursor Item Only" (think Brown Album era Orbital, with a little more 4/4 techno grunt), before Blue Hour deliver a pulverizing version of "He Said" that's by far and away the EP's most bowel-bothering moment. It's no-holds-barred techno and then some, with one almighty sub-heavy bassline.

Friday Fish Fry (Darq E Freaker remix)

Friday Fish Fry (Rob Garza remix)
Review: After the album comes the remix.... If Warp's signature of Nozinja was a curveball, Ninja Tune's announcement that Kelis had signed up to release an album with them was perhaps even more "huh" inducing. With the Dave Sitek produced Food a considered success, Ninja Tune usher in a rather delightful remix shaped extra course on this 12" platter. It's an impressive line up too with Dark E Freaker, Visionist, Machinedrum, Mount Kimbie and Thievery Corp dude Rob Garza all jostling for space. Given who is involved, it's little surprise the resultant flips are diverse with Mount Kimbie's atmospheric opener and Visionist's punishing take on "Friday Fish Fry" immediate highlights.

Fate (Alvin Aronson Sueno mix)
Review: Galcher Lustwerk's Tsuba debut, Nu Day, was undoubtedly one of Kevin Griffiths' label's best releases of recent years. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that Griffiths has commissioned a quartet of new remixes from Kai Alce (under his KZR guise) and fellow White Material artist. The latter's two mixes of "Fate" are particularly good, with the dreamy chords, exotic melodies and eyes-wide-shut rhythms of the Glass Mix just shading the bleep-laden minimal techno throb of the Sueno Mix. As for Alce, he delivers a pair of chunky, atmospheric, floor-focused dubs of "Fate". Of these, it's the snappy beats, loopy vocals and yearning chords of the Jefferson Avenue Cruise Dub that most impresses.

Sky Pushing (Dave Clarke remix)
Mayria (The Exaltics remix)
Trespass (Aubrey remix)
Jaz (The Traveller remix)
Review: Ostgut Ton return to Fokus, last year's accomplished debut album from Marcel Fengler with a suitably high profile remix 12". Offering a more well rounded and experimental display of Fengler's production palette than the functional techno he's issued in 12" format, Fokus has a definite highlight thus far and it's interesting to see who has been chosen to rework tracks from it. Shed and Dave Clarke are naturally the headline draws here and their respective takes on "Jaz" and "Sky Pushing" are as full throttle as one would expect but it's nice to see Solar One boss Robert Witschakowski get the exposure his work as The Exaltics deserves with a killer throbbing Italo-techno rendition of "King Of Psi".

Mandan (Patten version)
Feral (Odd Nosdam version)
Dark Star (Personable version - edit)
Review: Examining seminal ambient works from Harold Budd via his work on All Saints, this remix package brings a wisely curated host of modern artists in to deliver their own strung out tributes to an influential contemporary of Brian Eno et al. Patten takes to "Mandan" with a slow rising spirituality, gently feeding in threads of percussion to merge with the thick slurry of synths, winding up with a very harmonious cacophony of sound. Odd Nosdam meanwhile turns to his usual arsenal of fuzzy drone business as he tackles "Feral", the pitch bends taking on a transcendental nature as they stretch out into the ether. M. Geddes Gengras' Personable project opts for a sprawling 20 minute version of "Dark Star" that uses the ample running time to unfold a story of high drama, tension and beauty that creates a mastery out of gently discordant melodies.

Review: So far, the Clan Destine imprint has been responsible for some of the most daring noise-techno infusions of the last three years, and their Clan Destine Traxx offshoot has brought up some straight up killers thanks to the like of Tuff Sherm, Torn Hawk et al. This latest remix package of the Bestial Mouths LP comes heavy with new faces - possible aliases of various established US artists - who waste no time in getting their point across: a cold, foreboding mixture of power electronics, EBM and techno. The A-side is all muddy, swamped distortion and grainy percussion, with our top pick being the Nightchilde remix of "Cloaked". As for the B-side, things take a turn for the dancefloor, and it's Funerals' re-wiring of "Faceless" which really shines through thanks to one hell of a bassline gargle, but Dalhous' version of "Movement" is a total breath-taker, where subtle swarms of feedback collide majestically with angelic pads and sunken choir vocals. Outsider house? More like demonic techno...

Ursus Maritimus (Last Bear's Lament) (with Ripley - Kandodo remix - Extra Tweaking By Latch)
Review: Thrill Jockey present a sumptuous accompaniment to Wooden Ships' excellent LP West in the form of this Remixes EP which surely wins artwork of the week hands down! With Andrew Weatherall and Spaceman 3's Sonic Boom called on to provide the remixes, you can bet the music matches the presentation here. Weatherall steps up first with a sprawling, intoxicatingly psychedelic rendition of "Crossing" that swerves the gripping feedback of the original towards a throbbing arpeggio pulse and grinding bass line. The Sonic Boom contribution is altogether more ambitious with "Wiking Stew" Pete Kember's self styled "Red Krayola-ing" of the many tracks from the album into one heady, delay laden melange of brilliance.

No Body (Machinedrum remix)
Silo (Kobosil remix)
Crows (Blawan remix)
Schlang Bang (Third Side remix)
Review: Machinedrum, Blawan, the collaborative Third Side project and new name Kobosil remix tracks from Barker & Baumecker's brilliant debut LP Transsektoral. Up first is Machinedrum, who replaces the broken beats of "No Body" with a bassy four-to-the- floor hum-drum, starry synths and a compatible resonance that successfully maintains Barker & Baumecker's previous garage vibe. Upstart Kobosil removes any melodious element from the original "Silo" and reworks the drums suitably for peak time Berghain action. Blawan's re-command of "Crows" sees ritualistic drums swagger clumsily in and out of time to orc war-horns that sound like they're rung in the midst of battle. Third Side then turns "Schlang Bang" inside out by buckling down on a single looped-up sample. Sometimes remix additions can be a little underwhelming, this ain't one of them.

Review: Andy Vaz's first EP on Persistencebit is remixed by four masters of the art - Jan Jelinek, Detroit's Anthony Shake Shakir, Krikor and Mapstation (aka Stefan Schneider / To Rococo Rot). All mixes relay different contexts and approaches, creating a unique 12". Andy Vaz's original elements of deep house are reinterpreted as serious dance floor hits. Jan Jelinek (as Farben), delivers a minimal house version of 'People Change' that swings and flows like there’s no tomorrow, while Mapstation steps it up a notch in a more old school techno manner. On Side B, Krikor delivers a dark, sinister, bomb shelter mix, in a pumping, analogue-sounding, noisy cut-up style that he is so well known for. A superb mix that will initially twist up the floor and blow the speakers in the true sense of the meaning. Last but not least, Detroit's legend and one of the originators of the initial wave of Detroit techno Anthony Shake Shakir, takes it back to the good old days, delivering an authentic Detroit techno ain't-never-going-out-of-style mix of pure madness. This remix EP is guaranteed to stand out from the norm and is bound to be heard repeatedly. Tip

Leaning Over Backwards (Efdemin remix)
Girts (Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer remix)
Review: 2012 saw Berlin kings, Ostgut Ton create their considerably more housey, Unterton sub-label, giving the opportunity to some of Berlin's less pounding tracks to surface and emanate from those cavernous Berghain walls. For their first release, Berliner Tobias is remixed by two inarguably charismatic artists. "Leaning Over Backwards" is given a re-touch by none other than Efdemin, who has shaped the original into a deeper, leftfield excursion - raw as hell percussion glides freely among a whirlpool of strange bleeps and enchanting effects. For the B-side we have Meister Villalobos and Max Loderbauer giving some of their peerless organic beats and subtle harmonics. Great stuff as always from the German capital!

Come Closer (Liit remix) (5:53)
Grind Show (Aardvarck remix) (7:34)
Rising Overheads (Herva remix) (4:52)
Review: Don't you just hate it when remix EPs come filled with dull, similar-sounding reworks? Happily, Ostgut Ton is above all of that. Their choice of producers to remix cuts from Nick Hoppner's recent album, Folk, was inspired, and the results are uniformly superb. There's a brilliantly analogue-sounding rework of "Relate" by Chicago's The Black Madonna that doffs a cap to Jeff Mills, acid house and early British rave, and a trippy, dub techno-influenced, Berghain-friendly take on "Come Closer" by Lilt. On the flip, Dutch veteran Aardvarck makes "Grind Slow" sound like a mixture of instrumental industrial pop and hypnotic techno, before Herva steals the show with a rather brilliant, ambient-meets-experimental dub revision of "Rising Overheads". The latter may not be dancefloor dynamite, but it's really rather good.

Doamne Ce Greseala Am (Mehmet Aslan remix)
1 Septembrie (Khidja remix)
Review: Emotional Especial comes together with Future Nuggets for a "Special" one-off collaboration. Reinterpreting the music of Steaua de Mare are four remixes from rising (Eastern) stars Khidja and Mehmet Aslan.

The first in a short series of Especial "Specials" - where new artists are brought together for unique releases - we start by teaming up with Future Nuggets to present again the sonic offshoot in the unique band, Steaua de Mare. Returning in remix form, songs from their self-titled album, as well as extra additions, are specially reworked.

First Khidja take album track Babadag to new psychedelic depths, adding multiple layers of guitar and synths, all inexhaustibly dubbed and re-dubbed until a whole new track emerges for the more discerning minds.

Next Mehmet Aslan is focused on the dance-floor, carefully reconstructing new track Shop into a club orientated groove, aiming straight at the feet with inevitable results. On the flip, Mehmet then reworks album highlight, Doamne ce greseala am, amassing tension in careful, subtle ways, crafting a version that is a proper meeting of hearts and minds.

To finish, Khidja return to remix the previously unreleased 1 Septembrie. Going to great lengths in managing a myriad of details, with balearic, kraut, pseudo-disco and exotica reverberations all pulsating, here then are on point examples of remix manipulation. A perfect way to start this series and showcase these wonderful artists.

Sfire 2 (Kris Baha '86 remix)
Sfire 2 (Jamie Paton remix)
Sfire 3 (INHALT Seduction remix)
Sfire 3E (Lauer remix)
Review: Especial returns to its concept of taking music it loves - in this case Sfire's debut EP - and remixing them for a stand-alone release. Teaming up with Berlin's Cocktail d'Amore Music, mixing desk duties are taken by newcomer Kris Baha, as well as label mainstays Jamie Paton and INHALT and the esteemed Lauer.

Sfire's debut EP was one of those records that comes out to little fanfare but steadily becomes a sought after classic - something unique and until the recent repress was unsurprisingly going for casino money on the second hand market.

Following Discodromo's remix of Khidja (EES019) the EP was born with an aim to include all 3 originals in remixed form. Prime space is given to Melbourne / Berlin producer Kris Baha. With is Power Station label and parties now names to watch, plus releases upcoming on Kinfolk and Bahnsteig23, his version of Sfire 2 takes the original's prominent 80s' heartfelt influences and adds arpeggio's, shredded guitar and DMode keys on a bumping, throbbing journey down the Cosmic Hole.

Next Jamie Paton goes deep, with subdued arps, dubbed percussion and haunting bass refrain, all pulsing the vocals to a Distant Dreams meets Goodbye Horses sonnet.

This is backed with versions of Sfire 3. First San Fran's INHALT return with their unique modern Italo and West Coast Cold Wave mix, adding guitar and bass on a trip across the trans-peninne highway from Mancs to Sheffield and back with love.

Finally, Lauer's killer 303, electro reversion is the apt end. A remix that is more than a simple Synth-Pop retake, with 909s lifting the EP to finale. "You felt so close to me..."

Sfire 3E (Lauer remix)
Review: Emotional Especial and Cocktail d'Amore Music enter 'cahoot-mode' once again with a second round of Sfire remixes that take proceedings down a deeper, more stripped-back path courtesy of the inimitable Timothy J Fairplay and Willie Burns. Two artists who need little introduction offer up two remixes each that take the unique original to new dance floor extremes. Timothy steps up first with his take on "Sfire 2" via differing vocal and instrumental versions. His trademark, echo laden rolling percussion and John Carpenter-style key lines take the original Synth-pop homage to the dark room. Adding Arps, a lifting, hedonistic breakdown and the scatter-stepper drums and claps found on the Instrumental version and this is pure COTF territory and the better for it. Mr Willie Burns meanwhile has long followed his own path for his take on "Sfire 3", offering one of his deepest remixes to date. Thudding kick, brooding pads and dark strings force the vocals to go down, way down for examination. The distorted vocals of Remix 1 are countered by Remix 2 letting the track shine via a seemingly endless 4/4 beat. Psychedelic, trance inducing, pulsating, this is an ever growing mind expanse.

Cascavel Breeze (Duplex remix) (6:18)
Ghetto Prophet (Aerea remix) (8:03)
Review: A little over a year ago, Sabre brought their brand of jaunty electronic melodies and loose machine grooves to Clone Royal Oak for the first time. Here, three tracks from that EP get the remix treatment. Gifted and Blessed steps up first, serving up a pleasingly loved-up version of "Vigilante" full of rubbery synth bass, snappy snares and dreamy, stretched-out chords. MdM handles "Ghetto Prophet", making much of the Portuguese duo's swooping strings and moody chords, before veteran Dutch twosome Clone turn in a tactile techno re-make of "Cascavel Breeze". Finally, Aera delivers a jumpy, ultra-positive version of "Ghetto Prophet" that sits somewhere between classic Detroit techno and vintage US deep house.

Cape Malay Prayer (Mehmet Aslan remix) (8:12)
Review: Brian D'Souza and Esa Williams' 2015 album, Theory of Flo - the second Auntie Flo full-length - has picked up many plaudits since it was released last year. Here, a trio of album tracks gets given a new lease of life via brand new reworks. The Revenge kicks off proceedings, in the process delivering a dreamy, evocative, hypnotic interpretation that belies his reputation as a maker of forthright house and loopy disco. Cain gets in the Afro-futurist spirit with a throbbing, polyrhythm heavy take on "Hewal3", before D'Souza's Highlife pal Mehmet Aslan steals the show with an inspired flipside remix of "Cape Malay Prayer". Full of lilting electronics, trippy effects, indigenous instrumentation and rolling percussion, it's something of a soft-spun delight.

Review: TV Baby are NYC duo Matthew McAuley and Brain (not a typo, apparently) McPeck who are what local legend James Murphy would describe as using "borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80s" with their brand revised no-wave antics. Produced by Gabriel Andruzzi of the Rapture, their music is impressive nonetheless and gets some equally impressive remixes by these guys: check 'em out. First up is Los Angelo Secret Circuit doing his trademark psychedelic synth thing on "Free Tech", Tom Of England hands in two remixes of "Wild Joy", but it's all about the "Tom Of England Astro instrumental" where it stutters and glitches away in real style. Finally "Klerin Priest" gets the remix treatment and we'd have to hand the award to Ivan Smagghe whose "Frossed Remix" channels that dirty late night Paris feel much like his early Black Strobe releases did: grinding, squealing and booming about the place. One of his best remixes in years, if you ask us.

Spring At Last (The Black 80s remix) (6:04)
Colour (Potatohead People Lights Off remix) (4:26)
Review: Pete Josef's album for Sonar Kollektiv, the aptly named Colour, was a fitting piece of future soul and downtempo for this now legendary leftfield jazz outpost. Luckily, the label are as open-minded as the music on their catalogue, and they've decided to have a selection of tunes from the LP remixed and rewired into minimal dance cuts by a fine group of names. LV adds a subtle kick-hat to "Hope", while Fabian Dikof's dub version of "Colour" spirals the listener into a deep, trip web of strobe-light minimal for the peak hours. On the flip, "Spring At Last" is retouched by The Black 80s and transformed into a delicate, bouncy house chiller, followed by another glorious remix of colour by Potatohead People Lights Off, this time taking the tune to slower, more hip-hop-leaning territories.
