Review: Sushitech toast 15 years with a plush new edition of one of the label's classic albums. Delano Smith hit a high watermark with An Odyssey when he first dropped it in 2012, and it still sounds utterly flawless as a shining example of Detroit house. From the slinky funk of 'Survival' to the minimalist dub inflections of 'Trust In Someone', this is the positively classy end of the club music spectrum. At all times a sturdy rhythm section carries the tune, whether it be the shuffling hats of 'Midnight Hours' or the shimmering jack of 'No Turning Back', but the real prize here is the seductive mood Smith weaves throughout all 11 tracks. Looped up and hypnotic, but with each piece telling its own unique story, this is a masterclass in deepest house music.

Review: A new Bruce Springsteen album is always exciting. The Boss' hardworking and hard-done-by fables, touching on the politics and socio-economics tearing America apart, still resonate. If anything, they have become more relevant in an age when class struggles have created deep cultural divides, meaning any reminder of the real enemy is a welcome release.

Save for 2014's collection of covers and alternative versions, High Hopes, Letter To You is Springsteen's first full length since 2012, and will delight die harders - this is what they've been waiting for. Opening with 'One Minute You're Here', gruff rock 'n' roll set among the railroad tracks of Nowheresville, post-industrial decline, sets the tone. This is the artist on full power, an orator of broken dreams and heartfelt promises, a guy who will always be there for us because it feels like he's one of us. The king is back, long live the king.

Review: According to the accompany information, VRIL and Rodhad's first collaborative full-length was dually inspired by a desire to "subvert the expectations of their previous work" and the real world phenomena of unusual artefacts that baffle both archaeologists and historians (in their words, "strange anomalies scattered throughout the world"). Musically, the album is something of a slown-burn treat, with the pair slowly ambling between heady ambient soundscapes, buzzing, slow-motion psychedelic techno, creepy and bass-heavy electronic experiments, acid-flecked IDM, deep dub techno and productions that cannily blur the boundaries between these various stylistic touchpoints. As a result, Out of Place Artefacts is a startling and hugely enjoyable collection of mysterious musical movements.

Roxy Music fans won't be complaining though as one of the many million special releases is this, the final piece of the Roxy Music debut album celebration jigsaw. Steven Wilson's stereo mix of the fabled original album was meant to come out as part of 2018's huge box set and has been much debated online ever since. Now, after the band have given it their full blessing, it finally arrives on strictly limited clear wax, and has been specially mastered for vinyl by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios.

Active for a quarter of a century now, the Leeds institutions pioneered a digital dub sound that transitioned the scene out of the militant jah stepper period into the future. This album perfectly embodies that with its sleek drums and contemporary studio effects, clean bass sounds and sheet metal hits. Plenty of hefty dubs make it a timeless collection and the inlay includes full discography and liner notes.

After eight years he stared working on his own music and now we get to hear the results. Kwaidan is a style of Japanese ghost stories and this album aims to translate that mood into music. It does so perfectly well, and hugely evocatively, with skills compositions and unsettling darkness sitting next to lush ambiance that keeps you enchanted throughout. Check out the awesome artwork, too, which is perfectly spooky as we head into witching season.

Review: Longtime stadium dance act Faithless are back with a new album that draws on many years' experience, but also advancing years, to cook up something spiritual and trance inducing. Maxi Jazz, the famous frontman, doesn't feature, but Sister Bliss does a fine job of soulful house, squelchy techno and plenty on between. It is a record chock full of collaborations with the likes of Suzie Breaks and Damien Jurado and Nathan Ball and will keep old ravers happy as well as entice some new ones to a more refined sound. There are sing along late night grooves like 'I Need Someone' but also lush ambient interludes such as 'What Shall I Do.'

Review: To celebrate both Record Store Day 2020 and the album's 15th birthday, Music on Vinyl has decided to deliver an expanded, marbled vinyl edition of Mew's fourth full-length, And The Glass Handed Kites. The album has aged rather well all told, with the Danish art-rock duo's fuzzy-but-elegant songs and nods towards alt-rock, prog rock and guitar-based pop standing the test of time better than much of the music of their contemporaries. The second slab of wax boasts no less than ten bonus tracks, including previously unreleased song 'Wherefore Are You Not There', the sought after 'Red Version' of 'Dark Design, and a fine Mogwai remix of 'Why Are You Looking Grave'.

Review: Earlier this year, guitarist and producer Tomayasu Takeuchi launched the Tomoyastone project with a CD-only album of psychedelic funk and soul. Here, two of the set's most vibrant and expressive cuts come to vinyl for the very first time. On the A-side you'll find 'Light & Shadow', a bustling and colourful affair in which Takeuchi's jazzy guitar solos and razor-sharp riffs rise above loose-limbed funk drum-breaks and an equally funky bassline. He opts more for a swamp funk feel on equally as impressive B-side 'Torus Blues', adding electrifying lead guitar figures and clipped chords to an altogether more humid number that's driven forwards by a chunky, hip-hop style drum-beat.

Review: A reminder of the days when liking Morrissey was a less contentious matter than it is today, 'Honey You Know Where To Find Me' is one of his more jubilant moments musically and lyrically finds the Moz in typically defiant form. The song dates back to the recording sessions for the classic Vauxhall & I album, although the original recording was shelved, only to be re-recorded a year later. You can't keep a good song down, it seems, and here it is again in glorious 10" -- and strictly limited - orm.

Review: Those with a penchant for Latin disco pop will be in their element here, with the debut album from angel-faced Chilean-Norwegian falsetto Boy Pablo serving up a particularly generous helping with its title track. Accompanied by a worth-checking-out video helping tell its semi-autobiographical take of a young kid falling in love and playing football, it's enough to make some swoon.

Similarly slick, but heavier on the synths, 'I Hope She Loves Me Back' should make it clear that the overall theme here as anything amorous, wistful and smooth, with guitar licks and playful beats ensuring the artist is walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Which, at times, is more cocky than bashful - "Hey girl, do you like me? I guess that's a stupid ass question." Enough said.

Review: There's an undeniably far-out feel to the Zenker Brothers' second album, Cosmic Transmission, which adds further layers of trippy textures, hallucinatory sounds and smoky intensity to the aural blueprint first explored on their 2015 debut full-length Immersion. There's much to admire throughout, from the mind-bending ambient weirdness of opener 'When Nothing is Safe', and the slipped dub haze of 'Whose In Control', to the drug-addled IDM of 'Natural Connection', and the polyrhythmic techno trip of 'Divided Society'. Most striking of all is the trio of tracks that close the album, all of which are powered forwards not by heavy techno beats (or even their usual crunchy, off-kilter breakbeats) but rather a series of ear-catching, fuzz-soaked synthesizer arpeggio lines.

This process of redemption comes as drummer Mike Lowry officially joins the band as a songwriter to add to the foundational trio of William Cashion, Samuel T Herring and Gerrit Whelmers. The synth wave sound the band is famous for remains and is as bright and joyous as it has been in their nearly 15 year history. Heavenly choruses also make it last long in the memory and sure to win new fans as well as retain the old.

They do so with this latest 12", which features four accompaniment programs "designed to give the stasis user a pleasurable experience in extended hypersleep." This is hi fidelity listening music that is as cathartic and escapist as it comes. Each track is like tuning into and endless continuum of sound that ebbs and flows infinitely. Celestial and delicate, if you can't relax in the company of these then you got real problems.

Review: Sometimes known as Park Rangers, Japanese outfit Inokashira Rangers are the world's leading purveyors of unlikely, Hammond-heavy reggae cover versions. Since first emerging five years ago, they've served up countless surprise reggae takes on tracks from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Underworld. Here they continue on a similar theme by re-imagining New Order's throbbing, surging dancefloor anthem 'Blue Monday' as a cheeky chunk of turn-of-the-'70s rocksteady goodness. As usual, the band's organist is in fine form, playing mazy solos that track the vocal melody found on Bernard Sumner and company's 1983 original. Over on the flip they serve up something slower and breezier: a languid rocksteady interpretation of Simon & Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', this time utilizing plenty of Wurlitzer organ sounds. Ace!

Review: So, how long have you been waiting for this one to drop? The answer really depends on two things - whether you've just been waiting for new long form material from the UK IDM legends Autechre, or whether you've been waiting for Autechre to put a proper album together that stays true to the principles and format of a 'proper album', as this does.

Either way let's just say Signs has been some time in the making, and it's definitely a case of payoff for patience. For the most part it's the waves of space age melody that really stand out, tracks like 'Esc Desc' seem to fill the room with bands of sci-fi harmony. Of course there's plenty of glitch and bleep here, too - the stepping 'Au14' is a case in point - alongside rumbling, bass-heavy business like 'Si100', where playful drips of percussion create a juxtaposition of innocence and menace.

Review: Canadian minimal veteran Tomas Jirku has been a little quiet of late, but now he makes a welcome and unexpected return with something quite different for Silent Season. You can hear echoes of his earlier work in the soundscapes he's sculpted across Touching The Sublime, as high-definition sonic manipulation draws on his experience and eye for detail in wielding music technology, but rather than creating pointillist rhythmic structures, he's more concerned with billowing clouds of ambience. It's easy to draw parallels with the likes of Tim Hecker, but there's space for more techno-oriented productions in the midst of the maelstrom. Epic in scope and powerfully rendered, this is an album that will feed your head for a long time to come.

Review: 30 years ago in August, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery aka Janes Addiction put out their second album. It proved the most critically acclaimed and successful of all their work and in fact was their last for 13 years. Few other alternative rock albums have ever come close to the impact of the one. Fact fans will know, of course, the original record came with three different covers, and might also have read that the tortuous recording process behind the alum is what eventually lead to the group's demise.

Review: There isn't a more hit-packed Kraftwerk album than The Man Machine. First released in 1978 and here reissued on red vinyl accompanied by a fresh booklet of vintage images, the album boasts some of the German band's best loved songs, including 'The Robots', cheery sing-along 'The Model', the staggeringly good 'Neon Lights', and the bubbly title track. It shows how good the album is that such gems as 'Metropolis' and the picturesque 'Spacelab' - cuts that most other bands would kill to be able to write - tend to be ignored or overlooked. If you love electronic music, you need a copy of The Man Machine in your collection.

Review: You still won't find a more perfect electro album than Kraftwerk's Computer World, and it was the album that pretty much invented the style. That much is clear from this fresh 2020 reissue, which presents the iconic 1981 set on translucent yellow vinyl, accompanied by a slick booklet of fitting Kraftwerkian imagery. While 'Computer World', 'Pocket Calculator' and 'Computer Love' are near perfect electro-pop songs, it's the sheer heaviness and funkiness of the B-boy friendly beats on 'Home Computer', 'It's More Fun To Compute' and, most famously, 'Numbers' that make it such an essential. Put simply, Computer World still sounds like the future.

Review: Beastie Boys Music is a new greatest hits compilation album that serves as a companion to 2020's Spike Jonze-directed Beastie Boys Story and 256-page photo book, Beastie Boys Book. The double vinyl affair takes in 20 classic tracks that span the iconic group's more than 30 year career, with the biggest of the big such as 'No Sleep', 'Sabotage' and 'Intergalactic' all making the cut. By now these are well worn classics, but their impact on rap cannot be overstated, and the tunes still get any party banging thanks to the immediacy of the beats and sharpness of the rhymes.

Review: Those who've been followed the nu-jazz sound closely over the last two decades should already be familiar with the work of Italian trumpeter Gerardo Frisina; after all, this is the Schema regular's eight studio set since the dawn of the century. In our opinion, Moving Ahead is also one of the best, with Frisina expanding on his usual Latin-jazz inspired sound via tracks that variously incorporate elements of samba house, West and East African drum music, jazz house, dub and tropical-tinged jazz-funk. Yet for all the subtle eclecticism, there are constant threads that run throughout, specifically densely packed percussion and Frisina's haunting trumpet and sax solos.

Review: Demon Music's new Suede compilation spans the band's whole career and is presented no fewer than six sales of vinyl. The band's first era ran from 1993 to 2002 and took in five monstrously successful albums including their Mercury music prize-winning self-titled debut. Fans will argue the Dog Man Star follow up in 1994 was even better, and it sure was another commercial success, with the hit-packed Coming Up in 1996 another big one. Tracks from all these and more as well as some favourite b-sides and non album tracks also make the cut.

Review: The Fall's tenth album, like pretty much all the others, was met with a mixed critical response, but as well as containing one of the band's only two Top 40 UK singles - their cover of 'Victoria' by The Kinks, executed with a sideways swipe at the Victorian values of the Thatcher-led Tory government of the time - it's also got a stack of tracks that have grown to be Fall fan favourites. 'Carry Bag Man', autobiographical in a pretty loose sense, is compulsive and hilarious. The tight and taut glam stomp meet Krautrock drive of 'Bremen Nacht', complete with scraping violins and honking saxes, is about as good as the band gets in this particularly purple patch of their lengthy career. 'Athlete Cured' , as well as containing the priceless line "an odour resembling hot dogs / permeated his whole room", is all rockabilly aggression re-routed through synth drums and Moog washes, is essential Fall too.
As if that weren't enough, this re-issue package comes with a whole host of additional delights, including their biggest hit 'Ghost In My House', the electro hybrid anthem 'Hit The North', four radio session tracks, and their cover of The Beatles' 'A Day In The Life', previously only available on an NME charity album. Far from being a Fall completist's dream - they will probably have everything on here anyway - this is actually a brilliant place to start discovering one of the most important and delight-inducing bands of the past half decade.

Review: Innovative multi-percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has put together a superb full length here. Composed, arranged and conducted by the man himself, it's a powerful listen that conveys the turbulent state of the United States in 2020. It's not all bleak, with a certain sense of hope managing to shine through fantastic turns by the late Hamiet Bluiett, as well as Corey Wilkes, Tomeka Reid & the James Sanders String Qt. The jazz here is spiritual, melodic and improvised with a mix of urgency and drama and love and hope all going to the fore throughout. This is an essential listen for all jazz fans, old and new.

Review: Kraftwerk first toyed with the idea of making a concept album based on the Tour De France in the early 1980s, so it was probably inevitable that the cycling-mad group would eventually deliver on that promised. First released in 2003 and now reissued in re-mastered form on red and blue vinyl, the album is the most techno-centric set in the band's discography. While it still boasts their usual recurring melodic themes, tuneful motifs and robotic vocoder vocals, many of its hypnotic and euphoric tracks (particularly the three-part title track that dominates the first half of the album) are far weightier and more club-focused than their earlier releases. For that reason alone, it's worth a place in your collection.

Review: Autobhan, the 1974 album that began Kraftwerk's ascent to legendary status, is still capable of making the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. The headline attraction remains the absorbing, mesmerising, 22-minute title track, a musical whizz down an imaginary three-lane highway that's as evocative and atmospheric as they come. That said, the album's lesser-celebrated, more experimental flip-side tracks (and in particular the jaunty 'Kometenmelodie 2'), are also inspired. Here it gets the 2020 reissue treatment via a tasty blue vinyl pressing that comes packaged with a 12-page booklet of historic photos and typically utilitarian imagery.

Review: Earlier this month Louie Vega reissued his 2006 full-length collaboration with Luisito Quintero, a veteran percussionist who has long been part of New York's vibrant Latin fusion scene. Here he delivers 'Part Two' of the same project, a shorter but no less essential collection of percussion-rich Latin dance music gems. Opener 'Acid' is a high-quality traditional salsa gem, while 'Four Beat Mambo' does exactly what it says on the tin, with a killer double bassline rising and falling beneath Quintero's killer percussion. 'Son Montuno' adds a little deep jazz-funk flavour to the percussionist's infectious rhythms, while 'EOL Intro (Clap Your Hands)' is an up-tempo fusion of deep house and salsa that has long been a staple in the sets of Vega's Elements of Life band.

Review: While some would argue that it was the Orb or Pete Namlook who defined the sound of the 1990s ambient movement, you'll struggle to find a finer set of immersive electronic tracks than Global Communication's 1994 debut album 76:14. Here reissued on vinyl by its creators, Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard, with stunning, re-mastered sound (seriously, it has never sounded better), packaging and liner notes, the album still has the ability to take your breath away with its beauty, emotiveness and the almost neo-classical style of the duo's track construction. Highlights are plentiful, from the hip-hop influenced IDM shuffle of '9:25' and Namlook-ish bliss of '9:39', to the delicately layered choral vocals and deep chords of '12:18', and rushing release of the '8.01'/'5:23' double-header (better-known as 'Maiden Voyage').

Review: James Pennington is the Detroit techno talent who records as the Suburban Knight and has done since the middle of the eighties. He's got plenty of mini-classics to his name such as 'The Groove' and 'Art of Stalking' and now he is back with what amounts to his first solo record in over a decade having previously worked with Inner City and Underground Resistance. Here he offers scintillatingly soulful techno on 'Inner City', which comes with a deeper and more quickened 207737 edit. Reverse the record and you'll find 'Species', an intergalactic techno trip on bumping beats. 'Intel Bombs' (feat Ray 7) closes out with intense drum work and turbocharged stabs.

I Don't Fit In: My Wild Ride Through The Punk & Power Pop Trenches With The Nerves & The Beat
Notes: After two long years of painstaking research and development, here is the first major memoir covering the birth of DIY Power Pop, from PAUL COLLINS. From it's initial conception as a film script to it's re-birth as a full-bore rock & roll revelation, this is one crazy story from beginning to end. Outlining the first National DIY cross-country tour by an unsigned band in 1977, and by default, creating the pathway for the true indie underground network of the '80s to take as a template. It wasn't even a second thought for Collins and bandmates PETER CASE and JACK LEE, but the underground rock & roll world is a better place for it. But until now, the real details of the origins of THE NERVES, BREAKAWAYS, and The BEAT have eluded most of us, so with this tome of incredible survival stories from the trenches, Paul Collins opens up and reveals all the drama, victories and defeats with such an impassioned voice, you won't be able to put it down. The coverage of the pre-Punk 1975 landscape of both LA and San Francisco is unmatched, and your mind will be BLOWN. Featuring TONS of previously unseen photos, flyers and ephemera from the earliest days of The Nerves lineup as a four piece to the legal documents challenging The Paul Collins BEAT vs The English Beat, to the ill-fated Nerves reunion, and so much in between.
