Pentamerous Metamorphosis (remastered) (limited numbered gatefold 180 gram audiophile transparent blue marbled vinyl 2xLP in spot-varnished sleeve)

Review: Pioneering ambient duo Global Communication were invited to rework the Blood Music album from Chapterhouse for this 1993 album, originally on Dedicated Records. It might technically be a remix album, then, but you'd be hard pushed to notice much of the original material left intact. Instead, in the hands of these two skilled sonic craftsmen, it becomes an hour long work over five tracks, various multi-track tapes and thematic embellishments that make for a whole new world of cinematic sound. Floating ambience is paired with slow and deep electronic beats to classic effect throughout, making it yet another masterclass from Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton.

Review: Given The Primitive Painter would go on to become Alter Ego it should come as no surprise to anyone that this self titled debut from 1994 still sounds incredibly polished, and manages to hit a multitude of electronic notes in one very impressive swoop - some melancholic, some otherworldly, others punchy and direct. Re-releases like this are enough to convince even the most cynical first-pressing militants of the value in re-releasing. Why shouldn't a new generation of heads be won over by the beautiful acid ravescape painted by 'A Pagan Place', the slamming toybox percussion of 'Click Song', the emotionally charged euphoric downtempo joy of appropriately-titled 'Hope' or the retro futurism of electro-stepper 'Levitation'? As essential today as it would have been 25 years ago.

Review: Solar One Music's cofounder Robert Witschakowski and Dopplereffek's Gerald Donald return with another sauced out electro offering that takes you to another dimension. Their trademark sounds jump out of the speakers across four glorious sides of vinyl. The slipper baselines, the sci-fi motifs, the feeling of high speed space travel all define these cuts as you guide n bumpy beats or get lost in glistening synths. The duo first worked together a number of year ago but are still finding fresh new forms that make them as essential as ever.

Review: When it comes to interesting, inventive, off-kilter sounds, few labels can claim quite a strong a discography as Andrea Zarza and Matthew Kent's Mana imprint. Should you require further proof, we'd recommend checking out this superb debut album from hotly tipped "mystery artist" Pretty Sneaky. Like the shadowy producer/producer's previous, self-released work, the album offers up a take on dub techno that's loose, melodious and undeniably more fluid than most records in the style, with clear nods towards the likes of Pole, Burnt Friedman and spaced-put ambient dub. The rhythms are often thrillingly off-kilter, too, while the artist's extensive use of atmospheric field recordings makes each of the 15-minute tracks a calming, mood-enhancing event. Recommended.

Review: Helena Hauff's distinctive musical vision has made her one of techno and electro's most unique and celebrated selectors, and it's this side of her work that's showcased on "Kern Volume 5: Exclusives & Rarities", a triple-vinyl set that focuses on the numerous hard-to-find and previously unreleased tracks featured on her new DJ mix for Tresor. As you'd expect the quality threshold remains thrillingly high throughout, with Hauff focusing on fuzzy and scuzzy heavyweight slabs of electro, techno, ghetto tech and industrial-strength hardcore. Amongst the unreleased highlights are tracks from Umwelt, Machino, Galaxian, L.F.T and her good self (alongside Morah), while crate diggers will note the inclusion of rarities from Esoterik, Andrea Parker and David Morley, and DJ Godfather and DJ Starkski.

Review: After spending so much of their career to date releasing on Jazzman, it's interesting to see The Greg Foat Group make their way over to Athens Of The North for this cool and deadly new record. "The Dreaming Jewels" keeps the grooves simmering low down - all the sweeter to sink into. Just lock in on "Eric's Breakdown" and ask yourself if the track needs any more than that sweet conga flex. "The Door Into Summer" is a beautifully mellow jam too, all sultry Rhodes and sax to signal the start of lazy days. There are more tender moments and some breezier affairs, but the vibe remains chilled throughout this wonderful set from an accomplished band.

Review: Having previously offered up two vinyl compilations focusing on his book Life & Death on the New York Dancefloor 1980-83, dance music documentarian Tim Lawrence has decided to travel back in time to the decade covered in his previous book, Love Will Save The Day. This second part (of two) gathers together some of the greatest American dance music of the 1970s, deftly showcasing what some might call the disco continuum. It covers a lot of ground, moving from the sparkling orchestrated soul of Willie Hutch and the intergalactic jazz-funk of Charles Earland, to the punk-funk hedonism of Miroslave Vituous and the boogie-era brilliance of Edgar Winter, via a string of surging underground disco treats.

Review: Earlier this year, Jeff Mills decided to don his occasional Millsart alias for the first time in 17 years, in order to release the fifth volume in the long-running "Every Dog Has Its Day" series. The Motor City stalwart is obviously in a rich vein of form, because he's now ready to serve up volume six, which at nine tracks deep is the series' most expansive release to date. There's much to set the pulse racing throughout, from the hybrid deep house/Detroit techno warmth of opener "Phoenix Rising" and the summery, sun-kissed tech-jazz of "What's So Funny", to the Robert Hood style Motor City minimalism of "Six By Six By Nine" and the classic, sci-fi-fired futurism of "World Wide Whoops".

Review: Over the last few years, Geir Jennsen has been quietly offering up re-mastered and often expanded reissues of many of his most sought-after albums, including many that have previously never been released on wax. He's at it again here, delivering a weighty triple-vinyl version of one of his lesser-celebrated LPs, 2006's "Dropsone", which boasts seven previously unheard tracks and alternate takes recorded during the same period. Musically, it's one of the most unique sets in Jennsen's catalogue, in part because it mixes his usual ambient textures, chords and melodies with simmering strings, warmer melodies and - most notably - some genuine jazz rhythms. Whereas many of his albums are icy and otherworldly, "Dropsone" is positively sun-kissed and summery.

Review: Four Tet is back with a new album of shimmering wonderment on his own Text label. As ever, it's the way that Kieran Hebden tugs at the heart strings so artfully that makes him so well-loved, and he's not holding back one iota as "Sixteen Oceans" opens up with the ineffably pretty "School". There's some advanced garage ruminations on "Baby", classic ambience on "Harpsichord", and so the eclectic and extremely soul-cleansing vibes continue across three sides of wax. In addition to this wonderful new album, Hebden has also held back the fourth side for a bunch of locked grooves so satisfying you could get lost in them all day.

Review: London-based "multi-track edit" specialist the Reflex is the latest producer to have his way with gems from Salsoul's epic back catalogue. All four rubs are up to his usual high standard - he begins by dubbing out and rearranging "Mama Don't Papa Won't", a lesser-known Loleatta Holloway cut from the halcyon days of disco, before turning piano-and-percussion-heavy Candido favourite "Dancin' and Prancin'" into a sweaty, all-action extended workout. On the second record he heads towards boogie territory, giving Skyy's "Let's Celebrate" a sweet, synth-and-delay-laden makeover before making great use of the urgent, bass-heavy groove underpinning Rafael Cameron's brilliant "Boogie's Gonna Get Ya". Recommended.

Review: 19 years ago, Ulrich Schnauss became one of the most celebrated new artists in electronic music when he released debut album "Far Away Trains Passing By", a gorgeous and life-affirming set that cheerily joined the dots between IDM, picturesque electronica and shuffling downtempo grooves. As part of his current reissue project (five albums have been given the re-master treatment), Schnauss has decided to reissue it. The main set sounds as alluring and life-affirming as ever, but the real bonus for fans is the inclusion of no less than nine previously unreleased cuts recorded in the same period. These aren't cast-offs or throwaways, either, but rather tracks every bit as good as those that were originally releases.

Iman Omari, Mick Jenkins, Estelle and many more contribute to what is a gloriously fun, accessible album that is all about making you dance. Snapping beats ride over bumping bass on "Taste", "10%" with Kali Uchis has three different betas going on and a cameo from Estelle on "Oh No" is first class. Review: Much has changed since we last hear from Gaston Arevalo back in 2013, when we were rather impressed by his "Rollin Ballads" album on Octav. Here the often-overlooked ambient producer delivers a fine belated sequel that was apparently designed as, "a themed albuk told through the lens of an expedition diary". In effect it's a kind of imaginary soundtrack, with Arevalo setting his impeccable musical movements - think colourful but enveloping ambient chords, swelling synth-strings, slow-burn electronic melodies and barely recognisable, processed guitar sounds - to atmospheric field recordings made in Patagonia. It's a stunning combination all told, with frequently emotive results.

Review: 2020's inaugural Love Record Stores campaign is an exciting prospect for those who love coloured, marbled and "split" vinyl releases. The latest essential album to get this treatment is Black Pumas' self-titled 2019 debut. Helmed by multi-instrumentalist Adrian Quesada, the Austin-based band's trademark sound tends towards the psychedelic end of soul, offering up songs that variously doff a cap to Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, Rotary Connection, Terry Callier and the Chambers Brothers - all topped off with impassioned, effortlessly soulful lead vocals from mic man Eric Burton. Given the inspirations, it's no surprise that the band's tracks sound authentically old, though there's also an inherent vibrancy and freshness that means they never stray into hollow pastiche.

Review: It has been a musical eternity since King Crimson first introduced prog rock fans to their particularly artistic interpretation of the sound, landing on the scene just before the 1960s collapsed into the 1970s, with this special edition boxset containing the band's similarly limited edition 40th anniversary series in its entirety, which itself is over a decade old. The fact nothing here really sounds like it comes from a completely different age is testament to how good their work was, and still is. The track 'Epitaph' captures the mood perfectly - compressed strings sitting in the shadows of simple piano notes. As does the low fi innocent folk of 'Moonchild'. A far cry from many of the cliches associated with this genre label, with work like 'Catfood' owing as much to blues and rock 'n' roll as anything else it's not hard to see why KC achieved such universal adoration.

Review: Arthur Russell's Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face" is a stone cold classic, 40 years after it was first released to a rapturous reception. It was made an instant hit by the likes of Larry Levan and remains one of Arthur Russell's most crossover tunes. This special anniversary edition serves up a glut of versions from the female vocal to a MAW dub, Maw remix to a male vocal. There is plenty of variation in each one, with New York icons Masters at Work bring their trademark drum shuffles, while US disco and edit king Won layers in big flutes, wandering bass and plenty of loose grooves. There really is something for every club and every moment in the night here.

Review: This package is one that dedicated Depeche Mode fans won't want to miss. It documents in great detail the final date of the band's epic Global Spirit Tour in Berlin, which was the subject of the acclaimed 2019 documentary film "SPiRTS In The Forest". That documentary, a DVD of which is included in the package, interspersed concert footage with interviews with the band and six of their fans. The entire concert recording, which features a mixture of album tracks, fan favourites and big hits ("Enjoy The Silence", "Personal Jesus", "Just Can't Get Enough" and so on), is included here for the first time - both as audio across two CDs, and as a concert film via an accompanying DVD.

Review: Just how much can be done with a mere three musicians at play? In the case of GoGo Penguin, here on their fifth album and with one Mercury Music Prize nomination under their belt, the answer seems to be 'as much as those three musicians want'. This new collection of jazz-electronic-classical work again showcases how commanding and innovative the trio can be. Combining Chris Illingworth's keys, Rob Turner's percussion and the mournful double bass of Nick Blacka, this self-titled outing is a genuinely epic journey that makes transitioning between styles seem easy, seamlessly nodding to post-rock, ambient, movie score and more. Technically phenomenal, conceptually innovative and destined to transport listeners with each and every note, if you've not explored these guys before now's the time to get involved.

Review: During the 1970s, Dale O. Warren's ever-changing 24 Carat Black project delivered some of the finest hybrid soul-jazz music around, with the project's 1973 debut album considered something of an underground classic. "III" is the collective's third "official" album and was put together by Numero Group following the discovery of a number of 1980s recordings by the late, great Warren (with vocalists Princess Hearn, Vicki Gray, and LaRhonda LeGette) in a storage lock-up. Sparse but warm, languid and jazzy, it's a leisurely, soft-touch collection of cuts stripped of production trickery but high on dewy-eyed vocals, organic drums and tactile instrumentation.

Review: Libertine's popular "Traditions" series is now three years old and 15 releases deep. The latest artist to showcase their wares is Mark Wilkinson AKA Kid Machine, a producer who has previously offered up intoxicating throb-jobs on Red Laser, Cyberdance and Viewlexx. In keeping with his trademark style - think dark, foreboding and occasionally panicked fusions of Italo-disco, EBM, NYC freestyle and space disco - the eight tracks on show cannily combine moody, arpeggio-drivem grooves with hazy chords, sparkling synthesizer sounds, and chiming melodies that recall the synth-heavy horror soundtracks of John Carpenter. The quality threshold remains high throughout, meaning it should be a must-have for those in love with the more muscular and throbbing end of the electronic disco spectrum.

Review: There's so much to talk about with any instalment in the Phoebe Bridgers saga, and her latest is no exception whatsoever. A voice that has slowly garnered a seriously strong following, winning her the label of 'cult superstar' from some critics, she hits us with another series of knockout emotional bodyblows here, delivered through heartfelt sincerity and conversational lyrics. At times opting for a grunge-y, garage rock feel ('Kyoto'), in other moments taking on a far more sombre and broken air ('Moon Song' is enough to crush anyone in earshot), no matter how striking and effective the sounds are her words are what really elevates Bridgers above many peers in the alt-songwriting scene. If that's even really a thing. Digressions aside, it's hard to describe just how adept she is at hitting nail on head with turns of phrases and observations. They move past us leaving what appears to be a flesh wound when we've actually been cut to the core. Stunning.

Review: "Pyramid Pieces" is a long overdue retrospective of the golden years of Australia's modern jazz scene in the 1960s and '70s. It could hardly be called a well-known scene - it was barely celebrated in Australia, yet alone elsewhere - but over the course of two decades produced a string of fine releases showcasing fresh interpretations of then contemporary jazz from the USA and Europe, as well as a homegrown style known as 'Eco-Jazz'. Highlights are plentiful, from the magnificent modal movements of Jazz Co/Op's "A La Coltrane" and the effortlessly evocative spirituality of "Exploration of the Sun" by the John Sangster Quartet, to the heady eco-jazz beauty of the Brian Brown Quintet's "Wildflowers" and Peter Gaudion Blues Express's winding instrumental cover of jazz staple "People Make The World Go round".
