Review: Disco don and edit king Kon is a real favourite here at Juno HQ. Here he assumes his King of Nothing alias for a super limited white label 12". 'Alright' is the gorgeously upbeat a-side tune with its funky bass riffs, hip swinging claps and big horns. It's an authentic slice of dance floor disco joy that is backed with 'Stars.' This one has a more playful side to it, with falsetto female vocals and chugging drums, swirling synths that bring the cosmic vibes and a uniquely characterful sense of charm.

Commercial Music
  1. Hard Deal
  2. Dwayne's Shuffle
Review: Teppo Makynen's previous outing as The Stance Brothers, last year's 'Resolution Blue', was a sparse, eccentric, Afro-influenced chunk of loose and hazy jazz-funk rich in sharp guitar licks, chiming melodies and Tony Allen style drums. 'Commercial Music', the follow-up, boasts two similarly loose-limbed - but undeniably heavier - workouts. A-side 'Hard Deal' was original written to soundtrack a fashion brand's promotional campaign back in 2016. It sees Makynen pepper a heady, bassline-driven groove with fiendishly fuzzy, surf-rock influenced guitars. Flipside 'Dwayne's Shuffle' is a deeper and more laidback affair, with flanged guitars and glassy melodies riding a dubbty bassline and more of Makynen's trademark off-kilter live drums.

Review: Has there ever been a more reassuring album title? Not only is 'Live' in anywhere '21' going to send a message home that the privileged joys in life - for example a gig - are returning, you add the Melbourne bit into the equation and the point is even more pronounced. If one of the most militant nations in the world when it comes to COVID are getting people like King Gizzard in to play then live music really is back.

The Lizard Wizard might have only recently (well, relatively) released a live record, but that doesn't detract in the slightest from what's here. Opening with the foreboding drum solo that every decent rock concert should start on, what follows is yet another example of why this group is so vital. It's disorientating, constant, relentless, dark red lit weirds with guitars. Simply put, it's excellent. Again.

Review: The Dig This Way label outta Italy continues to build a fine head of steam with its stomping second disco release. 'Spell Bound' comes from PSK, and is taken from their one and only album Disco Season back in 1980. It was the opening track on that album, written by Austine Rigar and Jones Coakly, and is a bright, joyful groove. The big vocals bring exotic international flavours over the funky bass work, trilling drums and afro-tinged rhythms. ON the flip is another tune from that album, 'Revolution (Work Hard In Your Life)' that is all pixelated synth leads, afro-drum patterns and even a hint of ska swagger.

Review: 20/20 Vision has always been a label that sets the bar high when it comes to dancefloor releases - one of Yorkshire's most treasured institutions, to say the least. And while historically the imprint has often been on a tech-y house tip, lest we forget the is the crew that were letting a then-emergent Paul Woolford explore the outer reaches of electro house and breaks way back when, and that attitude hasn't really changed since.

Here the team hand the spotlight to another Leeds name, Alfred, who responds with three original tracks that are punchy, funky, engaging and hugely impactful. Broken beats, subtle rave hoover lines, mind-melting synth arpeggiations and a thoroughly futuristic feeling throughout. Definitely a powerful addition to any DJ's arsenal - the sort of tunes that can marry up well with so many styles and always grab maximum attention.

Review: While best known for their funk and soul reissues, Dynamite Cuts do frequently dig deeper and look further afield for musical inspiration. They're at it again here, offering up a lavishly packaged "45" featuring two killer cuts from Brazilian saxophonist and flautist Hector Costita's jazz-funk/jazz-fusion album 1981 (which, you guessed it, was first released in 1981). A-side 'Avessos' is warming, gentle and groovy, with Costita's jaunty sax motifs rising above a samba-jazz beat, restless triangle percussion and some seriously toasty electric piano lines. 'Divagacao' is a more up-tempo nd rhythmically interesting affair that reminded us of Azymuth while also boasting some genuinely dazzling sax solos.

Review: Ritmo Fantasia is the name of this superb 21 track selection, and it has been curated by Berlin-based, Venezuelan-born producer, DJ and record obsessor Trujillo. As the name suggests, this is music plucked from the outer fringes of the Spanish electronic scene from the 80s and 90 with plenty of proto sounds from the worlds of bleep, hip house, electro, boogie, Iberian pop and plenty more. It is a treasure trove of obscure but essential grooves for Balearic heads and music lovers alike. The artwork alone is worth the cover price, so big up Soundway for this one.

Review: For the latest edition in the label's superb Brazil 45s series, the Mr Bongo crew has decided to reissue one of their all-time favourite tracks, Os Devaneios' 'Embala Differente'. Situated here on side B, the track is one of the funkiest and heaviest samba floor-fillers going - a 1978 workout that adds punchy horns, disco-boogie bass, strong male lead vocals and mazy organ solos to an infectious and percussively dense rhythm track. A-side 'A Beleza E Voce Menina', a slightly later recording, is equally as impressive, with the obscure Brazilian band adding elements of soul, South American boogie and AOR to their funky-as-hell samba template. Another essential instalment in one of the most on-point reissue series around.

Review: Chicago collective Starvue's sole album, 1980's Upward Bound, has long been considered something of an underground classic by disco, soul and jazz-funk collectors, with numerous reissues and bootleg editions of the album appearing at various points over the last four decades. This licensed seven-inch single boasts two of the set's most potent tracks: single 'Body Fusion', a super-sweet, string-drenched slab of dewy-eyed jazz-funk/disco fusion that has been sampled on numerous occasions by house and nu-disco producers, and the lesser-celebrated 'Put The BS Aside'. This is arguably even better: a super-soulful post-disco number that boasts sumptuous orchestration and lusciously loved-up male and female vocals.

Review: Cult American ambient label Past Inside The Present looks to New York City-based composer Christina Giannone for her new full length Glazed Vision, which is pressed to nice heavy 160 gram transparent clear vinyl. This is her third full length following 202's The Faint and a collaborative work also last year, and it is another development of her dark, heavy, drone fulled ambient landscapes. These are lo-fi, foggy tracks that hang in mid air and make you feel like you're doing the same as only the most subtle of shapeshifting chords brings a sense of motion. It is bleak yet beautiful and never less than hugely absorbing.

Review: To date, Kim Cosmik has generally done her own thing - self-releasing a string of digital-only singles and albums which variously mix and mangle elements of electro, IDM, techno and dubstep. Here she pops up on an established label - Ralph Lawson's 2020 Vision to be exact - for the very first time. First, she whips up a frenzy courtesy of the fuzzy and aggressive riffs of techno roller 'Night Flight', complete with creepy chords and foreboding motifs. She then delivers raw, heavy, industrial-fired electro on 'Ore', whilst warped dubstep and electro are brilliantly mixed on 'Nocturnal'. To round things up nicely, 'Drifting' is a partial vocal number built around a wobbling dubstep bass with punchy electro drums and twinkling pianos.

Review: Instinct has been one of the key protagonists in garage's ongoing renaissance. Not only have his tunes given a fresh take on the much loved old sound, but there have been plenty of them, too. Now he's back with yet another full length, and once again it's packed with heat. There are deep shufflers that nod to the original US garage sound, as well as darker, 2-step tinged get downs. More so than before, there seem to be plenty of reversed bass stabs and MC vocals, old school signifiers and jungle breaks that pay homage to the roots of the sound while never simply copying it. The heart aching vocal of 'Don't Know' is our fave and a likely candidate for one of this summer's standout tunes.

Review: Four sides of frisky, twitchy tech-orientated grooves, spacious enough to be pliable, desirable DJ tools in the mix but embellished with enough melodic frills and spills to work under their own steam. 'What Are We Going To Do?' kicks off proceedings, with a rhythm that owes a bit to the skippy US garage energy pf Todd Edwards or Roy Davis Jr, stripped back but with a slinky bassline and mysterious mutterings voices adding additional atmosphere. 'Free' operates under similarly slanted syncopation template but counters it with echoing dub effects. 'Want It' and 'Colour' populate sides three and four, a little more low key but still steady, solid club tracks that should warm up your public nicely. Constant entertainment.

There is a decidedly old school feel to these tunes that harks back to the glory days of early block parties in the streets of New York and its surrounding boroughs. The vital 45rm opens with 'Put Your Catz Up,' a jumbled of big horns, lively vocal chants and tumbling, wooden drums and hits that is all about getting crowds up on their toes. Review: Three sumptuous offerings of quality grooves from the Aesthetic series, as Paris club scene fave Djebali and Argentinian DJ and producer Jorge Savorett join forces once again. This choice trio definitely veers on the side of the under rather than over stated, preferring to rely on warm rhythmic flourishes and enticing, inviting instrumentation rather than thumping firepower or gimmickry. The beats are tight and hypnotic, with perhaps just the slightest hint of a nod to the shuffling drum machine funk of early Derrick May productions like 'Nude Photo' here and the more head nodding repetition of Chicago jack house there. Aesthetically pleasing for sure.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Signal Issues
  2. Still Waiting
  3. Rush Hour
Review: These three offerings from Michael James might fit into the minimal/tech bracket comfortably but there's a free flowing, shuffling sense of funkiness that undeniably runs through them all that defies all the usual 'shoulder twitch' stereotypes about the genre. 'Signal Issues' employs a panther-like bass hovering under the radar, with the briefest of breakbeat snippets adding the growing syncopation. 'Still Waiting' continues the technofunk mission, a sea of underplayed bleepery augmenting the groove, while 'Rush Hour' has a breezier and more open vibe and perhaps a more classic techno feel, proper graceful like.

Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra have long been one of Japan's foremost purveyors of Fela Kuti-style goodness, though in the past they've shied away from covering the great man's works. With this must-check "45", the group has finally relented and delivered their interpretation of 'Water Get No Enemy', one of Kuti and Africa '70's best-loved tunes. Their interpretation, which was made in cahoots with DJ Ryuhei The Man, is simultaneously deliciously heavy - all low-register horns and Tony Allen style polyrhythmic drums - and surprisingly light and airy, with a sun-kissed vibe that draws the track towards Japanese spiritual jazz territory. Cro-Magnon collaborator DJ Jin delivers a flipside re-edit the emphasises all the good stuff while utilising a slightly more dancefloor-friendly arrangement.

Review: This production from boogie-era soul specialist Clark Jay has long been a sought-after item amongst collectors, with original copies of the 1981 Peach Tree Records 12" changing hands for significant sums online. Even if you're unfamiliar with it - and outside of record collecting circles, most people are - we'd recommend checking the sound clips of this first ever seven-inch reissue. 'Can't Stop Dancing' is particularly sweet and summery, with Jonnie 'Vibes' Lambert singing about his love of shaking his stuff atop spacey synthesizer lines and a relaxed, laidback disco-boogie groove. That tidy groove can be enjoyed further on the flipside instrumental mix, which makes excellent use of the original's female backing vocals and the aforementioned synthesizer melodies.

Review: Sheffield based Tommy Vicari Jnr's chunky, tribal and vocal house tune 'Look In Your Eyes' has been big ever since it surfaced in 2004, and it still gets great crowd reactions to this day. Politics Of Dancing now re-issue it with a fine selection of new remixes. The original still sounds future with its silky synths and metallic drums, and the bassline really is killer. Silverlining steps up with a 90's house version that is all slick electronic funk. Sweely then speeds it up further, allowing the original vocal to really tug at the heart strings. Politics Of Dancing & Djebali link for a final stripped down version that is deep as you like.

Review: A tasty pair of chunky, beefed and dubbed up disco delights courtesy of the Cardiology label and every bit as likely to get the heart rate pumping as the name would suggest. The Owl's 'Groove Engine' steps up to the breach on the A-side, the slightly slower of the pair but blessed with a thumping framework of four-to- the-floor sturdiness on which funky keys and an almost Afro vibe are tastfully and decoratively hung. Flip track 'I'm Gonna' by C Da Afro is constructed from more archetypically traditional old skool disco ingredients, from the Sister Sledge-esque female vocals to the shooting, strings. There's a nice amount of dub behaviour via the desk, enough to elevate it into orbit but not so much that the song elements of the track are obscured. Nice work all round.

Review: Back in 2018, previously unheard artist James Infiltrate impressed via a punchy EP of club-focused electro numbers. It later emerged that the mysterious producer was none other than Constant Sound founder Burnski. Here he dons the alias once more for a full-length excursion three years in the making. It's a fine album, too, with the long-serving producer delivering a winning combination of punchy, club-ready beats, sci-fi fired synth sounds, moody Michigan bass and the kind of authentically spacey atmosphere that has long been associated with the greatest electro records. There's also enough subtle variety in terms of tempo and style to guarantee that you'll not get bored of it any time soon. Highly impressive, but did we really expect anything less?

Opening track 'Nauhuri' and 'Automaa' are both full of grace and gorgeous, effortless glide, while 'Lumivyory' alters the mood somewhat to get down and dirty with some thoroughly filthy acid squelch filth. 'Polaaritahti' takes its cue from the more minimal 80s sounds of Egyptian Lover or Hashim, before we draw to a close with the more serene and soothing 'Mustikka'.

Review: The latest from Burnski's Vivid label is a three way split, six track affair with Oldboy, Xander and Longeez each dispatching a pair of tunes in the label's trademark roughneck breakbeat style. - Oldboy kicks off proceedings with the speedy junglisms of 'Blackbird' before the chunkier, funkier and a little more traditionally paced breaks heft of 'Walrus Party'. Xander's 'If I Tell EM' and 'Get To The Point' both plays off two step rhythmic twists and menacing bass against dreamy synths and more breakbeaty flourishes, before Longeez closes proceedings with the slightly sparser 'Evermore' - super sharp hi hats and echoing rasta dialogue - and the appropriately spinback-peppered 'Wheel Up'.

Review: Since launching in 2018, Aaron Andrew's Chubby label has become a trusted - if frustratingly irregular - source of high-quality deep house. Their latest missive, the Aussie imprint's first release since the autumn, is their most expansive yet, with four fresh cuts (each with an accompanying remix) stretched across two slabs of wax. Aleqs Notal goes ultra-deep on immersive and hypnotic opener 'Planetary Insanity', which is subsequently given an equally spacey revision courtesy of Life Recorder. Cheerier and breezier deep house warmth comes courtesy of Jose Rico's 'Agonias' and Leonids slightly darker revision, while Nail's squelchy, early morning take on Ewan Jansen's bubbly 'Basillica' is one of the EP's standout moments. Arguably best of all though is John Beltran's gorgeous revision of David Swatten's brilliantly bittersweet 'Wave Energy'.

It is the newly emergent, in form Daffy who follows up a nice EP on Time Is Now earlier in the year with throwback mash up. There are rigid metal chords panning about the mix next to bleeping fax machines and bustling breaks on the opener and from there he doesn't let up. 'Dents' is a bass heavy garage workout with razor sharp hits and 'No Caller ID' drops deeper into warped garage basslines. 'Palm Tree' is pure jungle goodness, and last of all 'Don't Think' is maybe the best of the lot.

Review: Earlier in the year, Robert 'Dubwise' Browne followed up his superb, soft-focus reggae-soul cover of 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' with 'Love Has Found Its Way', a fine hook-up with vocalist Maya Hatch that effortlessly joined the dots between samba, lovers rock and sultry downtempo soul. On this "45" he delivers two instrumental revisions of the cut, both of which make superb use of the glistening, fluid jazz guitar solos that only made a brief appearance on the original release. The A-side 'Guitar Instrumental Version' sounds like a future Balearic classic, with his Peter Green-esque solos tumbling down across a shuffling samba rhythm. The flipside 'Dub Guitar' version explores similar sonic territory, amplifying the bass a little while making good use of reverb and delay effects. In a word: gorgeous.

In keeping with the PILOT label's breakbeat-driven, retro-futurist feel, each of the four cuts on show doff a cap to turn of the '90s rave culture. This is arguably best exemplified by weighty, funky and spacey bleep & breaks jam '2', though the arguably even more sub-heavy, UK garage influenced opener '1' comes a close second. Elsewhere, '3' delivers subtle nods towards Rob Gordon and Richard H Kirk's short-lived XON project (look it up, kids) while '4' is an acid-flecked warehouse shuffler.

Review: French jazz-funk experimentalist Jean-Luc Ponty was already a quarter of a century into his career when he recorded 'In The Fast Lane', a genuinely brilliant synth-heavy workout that added trademark violin refrains to a staccato drum machine rhythm and bold, bubbly waves of synthesizer. The record became something of an anthem in the techno clubs of Detroit on its 1989 release, while also inspiring jazz-dancers at Gilles Peterson's legendary Dingwalls sessions. Here the track gets a deserved re-release as a 12" single, with extensive sleeve notes courtesy of the man himself. This time round, there's also an inspired cover version from Opolopo, who re-creates Ponty's famous synthesizer riffs, jams out colourful new solos and adds them all to a non-stop house beat that's as infectious as they come. Simply superb.

On this follow-up, they've turned their attention to another similarly lauded label, Flying Dutchman Records, offering their interpretations of two tracks associated with one of the imprint's most-loved artists, Lonnie Liston Smith. On the A-side they handle 'Devika (Goddess)', a David Hubbard composition that they re-frame as an atmospheric, bass guitar-led slab of laidback, head-nodding jazz funk full of warming electric piano, flanged funk guitars and hazy horns. Arguably even better is their party-starting take on Liston-Smith's most celebrated tune, 'Expansions', whose familiar bassline and infectious groove never fails to get dancefloors moving.

They have already served up seven EPs and now arrive on Fauve with another new one. It is a second volume of their West & East series and kick off with the jittery analogue grooves and post-disco wonkiness of 'Focal Savor' which is a writhing mass of detuned synths and chattery percussion. Que Sakamoto+NT's remix is a little more smooth and groove based but still sounds unhinged. The same outfit then serve up an original, 'Ninja Wa Sugoi', which is all tense and drawn out electronics that become more techno at the hands of the Radial Gaze remix.

Review: More from mystery artist Surrogate, reportedly a veteran Detroit-based techno producer operating under a new alias for the first time in 20 years. As with the publicity-shy artist's recent debut on Misstress Recordings, the four cuts showcased on this EP combine crunchy, distorted and sometimes extremely lo-fi techno and electro beats with dubbed-out electronics, deep space motifs and subtle nods towards vintage rave culture. There's much to admire throughout, from the soul-flecked deep techno crunchiness of 'Poison' and hypnotic, early morning brilliance of 'LX', to the fractured techno minimalism of closing cut 'Moderno'.

Review: Zodiac Childs are a real hero duo in the world of spaced out breakbeats. They don't release often - just a few times since 2018, but always on revered labels like Furthur Electronix, Exalt and their own Zodiac Wax, but when they do it is a real event. Atoms to Atoms is a long awaited debut album spread across six glorious sides of vinyl, packed with cosmic breaks, sci-fi ambience and lush future soundscapes. Plenty of subtle rave signifiers are deeply entrenched in these pieces, which range from purely atmospheric such as 'Kepler Track Two' to absolutely blissed out dance floor territory as on 'O To The M.' These tracks could have been unearthed on a DAT lost since 1994, or they could be beamed back from the future. Either way, they're excellent.

Funk
  1. I Wanna Be With You
  2. There Comes A Time
Review: The Terrestrial Funk label aims to birth and perpetuate timeless music through the ages and boy does it do so here. This one from Teddy Studstill offers up some previously unreleased Miami boogie. It was recorded in the early eighties and somehow got shelved until now. Opener 'I Wanna Be With You' is a big tune with crashing drum hits and stark synth stabs, there is plenty of 80s production magic in the grooves and an impassioned vocal. Things slow down for the more romantic and seductive 'There Comes A Time' on the flip.

Review: Calling a spade a spade in a way we consider typical of Newport, Wales given how Goldie Lookin' Chain put the town on the map, Skindred have never been backwards at coming forwards, hearts firmly on their sleeve. This debut album title told us everything we needed to know about where they were coming from, and we don't mean geographically.

Marrying metal, funk rock, punk, and hardcore with hip hop, drum & bass, dubstep and ragga, on paper that may appear a strange meeting of sounds that potentially should have shaken hands and walked away before the first note was played. In practice, and on stage, the outfit have rightly won awards for their unique take on guitar grit, and live prowess. If you're still unconvinced, think early Chilli Peppers in a skunk-soaked roots club listening to Rage Against the Machine and you won't go too far wrong.

Review: It's time to get to know Club Magnus, a new label that launches with Moonlight 001, a various artist collection that brings together some fresh contemporary talents across three forward thinking cuts. Jay Tripwire opens up with his scintillating tech house sounds embellished with all the usual acid and after party freakiness. Magnus Asberg then keeps you on your toes with his nimble drum work and the cyborg electro funk of 'Sunset' (vs Sound Of The Suburbs) while Microman closes with the more dark, involving and intense techno convulsions of 'Inga Aviseringar'.
