Wine
Wine (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: INSTINCT 17. Rel: 11 Oct 21
UK Garage
  1. Wine (6:46)
  2. Babeh (4:11)
  3. I Know (5:17)
Review: As is often the way, this new one Instinct is as rude as flicking the bird in a pair of Nike TNs and a full tech fleece. It comes from Soul Mass Transit System, a Leeds based duo made up of D. Jason and Baby J known for their retro tinged garage bangers. 'Wine' is all naughty bass, slamming drums and jungle samples, while 'Babeh' gets more down and dirty on tightly programmed kicks, dark bass and echoing vocals that are all made for the peak time. Last of all, 'I Know' is a cluster of percussive hits and reversed effects, warped bass and twisted rhythms that make for perfect body music.

Review: They don't call him the Stevie Wonder of house music for nothing: Kerri Chandler brings musicality and unbridled joy to everything he does. For this one, there is even more of a celebratory and raptors feeling than normal because of the appearance of Rev F. L. Brown. His impassioned, gravelly toned sermons are cut up and dropped into one of Kerri's timeless house beats, and the results are exceptional. HIs famous kicks punk as heavily as always, the chords are simple but effective, and the whole thing is sure to become a classic that can always be reached for to make a dance floor erupt. Take your pick of the different versions, because they all hit home.

Review: Is there a label as iconic Nervous in all of house music? Probably not. The New York staple is responsible for shaping and reshaping the genre many times over the years and in 2021 turns an impressive 30. Of course, there are plenty of celebrations going on to mark the occasion, including a bumper multi-part compilation feature all the label's many golden grooves and classic tunes from over the years. Next to enduring label associates like David Morales and Mood II Swing, Armand Van Helden and Kim English, plenty of new school names get in on the act such as Danny Howard, Darius Syrossian and Gerd Janson. Superb.

Review: A former protege of local legends such as Marcus Belgrave and Mike Banks, the Motor City's Jon Dixon serves up more hi-tech jazz here on the Detroit Get Down EP - on his very own 4evr 4wrd imprint. Features the deep and spiritual house journey of 'On My Own' featuring the inimitable Moodymann & Kasan Belgrave, followed by the elevating techno soul of "How We Get Down (In Detroit)". Over on the flip, we have a couple of edits of the utterly hypnotic "Lisbon Nights" (feat Sarah Elizabeth Charles) with our pick being the Minor Invention version.

  2. Shhh...t (5:49)
  3. 420 Reve (4:21)
  4. Locked Steps (5:33)
Review: Laidlaw and Jamie Mannion's Subee label (itself a spin-off from BEEYOU), strides into its fourth release following excellent drops from Haass, b0n & t3x3 and Mathijs Smit. Committed to the tech house underground, the label now offers up some bubbling party tackle from French producer Aladdin. Even if the name isn't instantly familiar, the tunes are so damn catchy they'll soon be staples in your bag. 'GIVEMETHEFUNK' bounces with a 90s garage house organ riff which gets smoothed out by subtly dubby FX touches and an overall moodiness to balance out the boisterous rhythm section. The swinging bounce abounds on 'Shhh...t' while '420 Reve' offers up a more clattering, bleep-flecked kind of old-skool. 'Locked Steps' keeps the pressure up, ensuring this 12" stays firmly at the front of the pile when you're thinking about artfully crafted tackle to whip the crowd up good n' proper.

It is now 26 years since their self titled debut album but here we get the 20th anniversary edition served up on limited edition vinyl. While many of the band's other albums have also been reissued on wax this year, none compare to this one. It features remastered tracks from the original analog tapes, as well as remixes and previously unreleased alternate versions of songs from the album. The record was noted for its innovative recording techniques at the time and was met with critical acclaim as a result and went on to receive multi-platinum certifications in several territories as a result.

  4. Sun Raves (Maher Daniel remix) (7:52)
Review: North Phase is an emergent collaborative project from James Burnham and Robert James, both already well-established in the minimal tech house scene under their own steam. In joining forces they're turning their focus towards breakbeat, having already appeared on Pilot opposite Kolter. This time around, they're going it alone with three original bombs of rolling breaks honed into a sharp, DJ-friendly unit. 'Look Around' is the big, chunky workout in contrast to the crafty, organ-licked touch of 'Eternals'. 'Sun Raves' meanwhile takes things into deep, evocative territory and comes off as the strongest track on the record in the process. So much so, Maher Daniel stepped up to remix it and turned it into a sparkling electro-breaks turn for sweet and spiritual sesh heads.

Review: She might be more well known these days for her open letters to Miley Ray Cyrus or public struggles with mental health, but this So Far The Best of reminds us just why Sinead O'Connor is so famous in the first place. It brings together the very best tunes from her four albums and was originally released in 1997, so of course, includes her ubiquitous and global smash Number 1 'Nothing Compares 2 U' is included, as are earlier singles 'Troy' and 'Mandinka', all of which showcase her fearless style and a rich array of emotions. Review: Butter Side Up started as a party in Leeds, then made a successful move to London, then also became a label which has so far proved to be just as popular with the real heads of the underground scene. Every EP gets lapped up and this sixth one is not about to spoil that track record. It's a fresh four tracker from Basement Space that opens with the rugged electro-techno sounds of 'Cosmonaut.' Things get more silky smooth on 'Domino' which is a perfect bit of 90s tinged tech house with cosmic references and sci-fi motifs. 'Equilibrium' opens up the flip with more well crafted breakbeats and balmy pad work before the most spaced out breaks of them all take 'Neptune Sunrise' off into some future world. Lovely stuff.

  1. Workin Scrubs (2:59)
  2. Gold Diggin (2:57)
Review: Casual Connection (real name Lukasz Ru-Kasu) has been in the edit game for a while, with his first digital-only collection of disco and boogie revisions appearing on Alpaca Edits seven years ago. Here he returns with a third 12" single of his own, which also marks his first release of 2021. A-side 'Working Scrubs' is a clever revision of a '90s R&B classic that places the now iconic group vocals atop a rubbery, synth-heavy backing track that sits somewhere between nu-disco and '80s synth-funk. 'Gold Diggin' is another mash-up of sorts, with a much-loved hip-hop vocal sitting atop a heavy, bustling, all action rhythm-track full of stuttering drum hits and cut-up, hip-house style vocal stabs. Proper party-starting music.

  3. For The Music (7:42)
Review: Coming off a successful transatlantic exchange, Brian Kage and his Michigander label keep the momentum, and the collaborative spirit, moving with an EP that hits closer to home. For any Detroit artist, working with Delano Smith would be on the bucket list, as one of the city's original, more influential DJs - before the D developed any of its "waves" - who would come into his own as a producer later to, once again, help mold the Techno City's sound. Make no mistakes about it, this tastemaker had a ripple effect back before techno even had a name, when it was just "progressive" music and mixing. The thing is, the feeling of admiration and respect here is mutual, from the moment Smith first stumbled across one of Kage's records and had to know who was making these sounds. This meeting of the minds happened organically and timely, with Keep 'em Movin' as the result.

Review: Black Cash & Theo AKA Thelonious Beats are two of the most accomplished edit masters on the Galaxy Sound Co label. Here they come back with another pair of vital nuggets, firstly with 'Not So Easy (To Be Free).' It's a bumping afro-funk gem with a majestic lead horn and plenty of uplifting chords. On the flip of the limited 7" is a remastered edit of soul gem 'Our Lives Are Shaped.' It's lead by a lung busting female vocal with sultry backing singers, plenty of noodling funk bass and colourful vibraphone work up top. A tasty pair of tunes for sure.

Review: The deep house maestro that is Ron Trent has been tapped up for some of his remix expertise by the good folk at Leng. He is charged with tackling Harks & Mudd's 'Susta' and turns out two versions. His opening remix is all grown up Balearic sounds. Gentle percussion is scattered over the leggy house drums, noodling Rhodes chords bring colour and a breathy female vocal layers in the sun kissed soul. It's an immediate classic. On the flip comes his dub, which is more fleshy and elastic, but with just as much soul and warmth.

Chiefly, that is a love of 90's dance anthems, which was rekindled in her during downtime during the pandemic. Released via her own Gudu Records, 'I Go' is a catchy, singable bit of throwback dance-pop with her own vocals front and centre. The old school beats and bass will get any party pumped, with the synth work looks to the cosmos and explores a very different vibe to her previous single. An instrumental and acappella are also included on this lovely 12".

Always bringing something a little different to the house and disco edit game, this time they've reached out to the legendary Chez Damier to team up with label boss Camille and Italian producer Nico Lahs in assembling a compilation of on point edits that will have any keen digger in a frenzy. Across two slabs of wax we get respectfully touched up versions spanning a range of styles. There's powerful singalong soul stirrers like Janice McClain's 'Giving My Love', nasty low down groovers like Love Cild's Afro Cuban Blues Band's 'SpanDisco', and lots more besides. Review: There's nothing particularly revolutionary about the idea behind the Disco Reggae compilation series - contemporary artists deliver reggae-soaked covers of boogie and disco classics - but the sets themselves never fail to impress. The latest volume, the fourth in total, once again contains some genuinely brilliant covers. It opens with a wonderfully woozy and sumptuous take on Roy Ayers' 'We Live in Brooklyn' by Booker Gee's Soul Sugar outfit and ends with a frankly genius dub-wise take on Kraftwerk's 'Radioactivity' courtesy of Taggy Matcher. In between, you'll find highlights including a reggae-boogie revision of Chemise's 'She Can't Love You' (again by Taggy Matcher), a wonderfully soulful re-interpretation of Errol Walker classic 'In These Times' (here re-titled 'Summertime') by Wolfgang, and a killer collaboration between Blundetto and Booker Gee.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.

The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.

  34. The Upsetters - "Dub Money" (3:50)
Review: The Upsetters' legendary Build The Ark album is one of the many pioneering works of dub that the late great Lee 'Scratch' Perry was involved with. It brings together the very best of Jamaican reggae with a number of the more rare tracks sitting alongside some stone cold classics. Junior Murvin's 'Cross Over', Windston Heywood's 'Long, Long Time' and Eric Donaldson's 'Freedom Street' all feature on this one, which was first put out by Trojan Records in 1990. This limited edition repress has been pressed to orange vinyl just 2000 times.

Review: DRPN GEMS is a brand new label on the block and it is here to serve up crowd rockin' block party joints. This opening gambit is a real show stopper with Wally Puma and Jim Sharp mashing up myriad different R&B and hip hop sounds into popping new jams. Label boss Puma takes care of the A side with a hybrid blend and crafty remake of two old school anthems that are deep cut and groovy. On the reverse are a couple of super sharp DJ tools and body-popping breaks that cannot fail to move a club. This is a red hot debut 7" from what looks like a promising new label.

Review: American label Mojo Electric have reissued golden oldies by the likes of Cybotron, Freestyle and Jive Rhythm Trax recently, but this could be their biggest one yet. They continue their foray into classic electronic music with this stone cold classic. Get your hands on a French Touch classic, it is of course 'Around The World', an unforgettable early anthem from Daft Punk on a cute 7" pressing. The seminal late 1997 classic is on the A-side, followed on the flip by the bombastic bounce of 'Da Funk' - another anthem by Bangalter and de Homem-Christo.

In recent times he's treated us to an epic, hip-hop style instrumental mixtape, modern jazz reworks and a massive soulful house number on Classic. So, what has he got for us this time round? Two fine revisions of noughties neo-soul nuggets, that's what. First up he has his way with a Prince-esque number, adding weighty sub-bass and house-not-house beats to the original's acoustic guitars and punchy brass. He's in smooth, soulful deep house mode on the flip, delivering a tidy and tasteful tweak of an old Erykah Badu gem.

This one is a gooey and loved up disco 12" from the dream team pairing of Tom Findlay from Groove Armada and James Alexander Bright. They hook up via mutual appreciation over Twitter and worked up a load of new material in the studio as Bright & Findlay. Their first offering 'Slow Dance' is perfection - lush 80s synths, slow-motion boogie beats and drum machines marbled with little guitar riffs and soulful vocals that ate you to a better place. Two further heart melters come on the flip side and we are already in love with this project.

Review: As the title sneakily suggests, the latest volume in DJ Soopasoul's essential "Soopastole Edits" series sees the prolific re-editor and mash-up merchant take his scalpel to all time disco classic "We Are Family". We could be wrong, but it sounds like it was created using the multi-track parts, focusing as it does for much of the duration on a stripped-back, DJ-friendly groove, selected vocal snippets and delay-laden musical elements not always audible on the original version. Over on the flipside "Cosmo On The Groove" version, he takes a slightly different approach, adding a classic old school hip-hop acappella to an expertly cut-up version of the track that utilizes a little more of the sing-along chorus.

  4. Kolter - "Systematic" (4:32)
Review: Earlier in the year, we heaped tons of praise on the booming, breakbeat-driven first EP from Pilot, which showcased a quartet of killer cuts from Johannes Kolter. He returns to action on this EP, taking control of the B-side to offer-up the funky, sample-heavy electro/breaks fusion of 'B2R' (think Layo & Bushwacka's classic material and you're close) and the more spacey, electro-focused bubbliness of 'Systematic'. While they're both very good, we'd argue that North Phase's A-side tracks are even better. Choose between the dubby and hypnotic breakbeat-house roll of 'Feel It', and 'Escape From Planet X', a deeper, more bass-heavy chunk of breakbeat pleasure that comes complete with fizzing electronic noises, deep bass and some suitably trippy synth sounds.

Review: Dave Lee's Remixed With Love series returns for 2021, though this time he's keeping tight-lipped about the identity of the artists and tracks he's reworked. It doesn't take a genius to work out the source material he's mined for EP highlight 'Dub Up To The Bumper', a deliciously delay-laden, Larry Levan style 1980s NYC dub of Grace Jones favourite 'Pull Up To The Bumper'. Those who prefer the more traditional end of the 1970s disco spectrum will love 'Stomp Your Feet', a heavily orchestrated affair full of sweet female vocals, percussive breakdowns, warming horns and mazy Clavinet motifs, while closing cut 'In Your Blood' is a fine revision of a solo-laden disco-funk number rich in cut-glass strings and killer horn arrangements.

Review: To mark 30 years in the game, legendary NYC house label Nervous Records has decided to release a series of compilations that pair classic cuts with new remixes. Louie Vega kicks off the first volume by remixing one of his own productions, Willie Ninja's 'I'm Hot', reinventing the analogue-rich deep house bumper as a disco-centric, while Radio Slave turns Ralph Falcon's sleazy 'Break You' into a stomping techno anthem. Tensnake adds warmth and wooziness to The Messenger's 'End This Hate' (a classic Todd Edwards production), Agent Orange delivers a warehouse-ready techno version of Phuture Trax's 'Future Groove' and Dr Packer emphasizes the gospel influences in Kim English's 'Unspeakable Joy'. Arguably best of all though is Kevin McKay's muscular electro-disco mix of Byron Stingly's superb Sylvester cover, 'Yu Make Me Feel Mighty Real'.

Review: If life came down to 'Bar Solitude' then we'd at once be in a lot of trouble and a truly easy going place. Airports aside, drinking in bars on your own is a mixture of frustration and hope. Sean La'Brooy makes the very phrase feel like it couldn't do more to invite you in, and pick up the tab. A jazz-inflected slice of late night ambience.

In all honesty the rest of the EP doesn't let track four down. You can pick between the wet shuffles of 'Triplet Falls', the pseudo acid house beauty that is 'Northcote Winter Solstice', the deep and timbre-filled immersive dive that is 'Thank You For Everything' (in the running for best use of guitars with synth on a chill out track), or either the post-rock or glittering chimes of 'Splash'. The point being it's all going to go your way.

The Knife is the first time Young has been in the studio in six years and is quite the departure from, say, his seminal Pattern Buffer series. Instead he delves into the more deeper shades of hi-tech soul on this one. We're particularly feeling the soulful and emotive mood music of 'No Regrets' on the A side, while understated B side cut 'Santa Barbara' makes perfect for perfect tackle on the warm-up slot with its a sensual vocals and velvety chords, followed by the late night jazz bar loops of 'The Promenade'.

Review: Here's a pleasant surprise: a fresh set of remixes of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Melbourne-based band Surprise Chef, whose hard-to-pigeonhole take on cinematic soul contains numerous nods to classic jazz-funk and Brit-funk jams. Masters at Work give their take on 'Crayfish Caper', first joining the dots between Afro-beat, jazz-funk and West London style bruk on the 'Nuyorican Broken' mix, before delivering two house-style revisions - the squelchy, synth-bass-propelled 'Masters at Work Mix' and the tougher, more percussive 'MAW Dub'. The EP's other interpretations come from Harvey Sutherland, whose 'Weird Flex 12" and 'Weird Flex' revisions of 'New Ferrari' add the band's jazz-funk instrumentation and spacey synths to a warming, off-kilter deep house groove.

Known as World Got Soul, the series begins via FIngier's first collaborations with Brazilian jazz singer Josi Dias. She's in fine form on A-side 'Um Brilho Novo', a superb slab of jazz-tinged Brazilian soul rich in energetic funk breaks, mazy vibraphone and flute solos, heavy bass and razor-sharp guitar licks. Review: Northern Irish duo Bicep has built their production career on blending, repackaging and reimagining classic house influences. It's little surprise, then, to find that this latest 12" does the same. Hammer collaboration "Dahlia" sets the tone, combining the bold pianos of vintage Italian house with the kind of dreamy pads and snappy drum machine rhythms that recall the Halcyon days of late '80s/early '80s Balearic house. There's more of a sweaty warehouse feel about "Rays" - all yelping female vocal cuts, booming garage bass and skipping beats - while "Seagulls" sits somewhere between the two tracks, offering both bottom-end bump and eyes-closed sweetness.

He's in prime form on this ultra-limited "45" too. A-side 'H' crafts a rolling, 4/4 hip-hop tempo beats out of some classic disco licks and then adds Ol' Dirty Bastard and Kelis' vocals from one of the biggest hip-hop hits of 1999. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. If you're looking for bona-fide peak-time thrills, we'd recommend A-side 'If You Want Me', a subtly straightened and toughened-up re-arrangement of Barbara Roy and Ecstasy, Passion & Pain's 1981 disco anthem 'If You Want Me'. Kassian teases out some of the Italo-disco style elements audible on some of the early mixes of the boogie-era track, adding some twerkin' acid lines towards the end of the track. Over on the flip, 'So Nice' is a bouncy, shuffling, house-style tweak of a gorgeous disco bumper of unknown origin.

Nine, the crew's latest set (and first of 2021) is every bit as incendiary, versatile and impactful as its predecessors, with the 10 collected tracks touching on everything from drowsy R&B, spoken word, classic soul and post-punk rock, to UK bass mutations, gospel, jazz-funk, Charles Stepney style excursions and hazy downtempo beats. Mixing live instrumentation and electronics with a wealth of spoken, sung and rapped vocals, Nine is a genuinely stunning, thought-provoking album full of razor-sharp lyrics and brilliantly executed musical movements.
