Assanti Sana
In Xs
Review: For several years Luciano was one of the kings of the underground. The Swiss-Chilean rode the crest of the minimal wave and had his own distinctive Latin edge that marked him out in a class of one. Now he is back to DJing - often with his equally heralded brethren Ricardo Villalobos - as well as producing. Rawax has the latest goods from the man in the form of this suitably epic two-track EP. 'Assanti Sana' is all subtly shifting grooves and stringy percussive lines with some textured, expressionistic synth lines. 'In Xs' is deeper, and warmer, with ever-evolving rhythms and lots of stringy lines all woven together in an intricate fashion.

Rise Of Angel (original mix)
Rise Of Angel (Mirko Loko remix)
Review: With the sunset over Ushuaia clearly in his minds eye, the Cadenza head honcho makes a return to the production game after a noticeable absence, delivering the anthemic tones of "Rise Of Angel" to lift everyone's spirits in these gloomy winter months. "Rise Of Angel", with its tender piano chords and faintly trancey synths, should have all and sundry gazing wistfully out of the window dreaming of the summer season in Ibiza, although this is a track clearly built for the end of the night rather than the peak of a set. Mirko Loko's remix pares down the melodics and lays the glitchy textures on thick for a more versatile cut, although as with the original subtlety is the driving force in the track.

Review: Minimal techno has always been about stripping things down to their essence. Now, with Cadenza's Split Composition series, the opposite approach comes into play: building a new sound, and a new tradition, from the beats up. One record filled with dance floor music and the other with more weird stuff.

Eat - "Mission Elevator"
Luciano - "Bla Bla Bla"
Review: Diamonds & Pearls keep us busy as the final release of their first compilation "Silverbird Casino" is coming closer and closer. To raise the levels of excitement once again, the boys at DNP-Headquarters decided to drop another preview bomb in the form of a second EP release from the forthcoming compilation (which is going to be released in October). No other than Chilean sunny boy and groove scientist Luciano is taking us on the A-side for a long ride of lush but infectious minimalism. Eleven minutes strong, Luciano does what he does best and unfolds a continuous flow of subtle rhythmic changes, melodies and field recordings to create an overall hypnotic feel that sucks you in right from the start. Think his last EP on Cadenza with Thomas Melchior and add an eerie feel to it. With tracks like this the after hour will never end. On the flip side the enigmatic duo EAT (both integrate parts of the Diamonds and Pearls family) steps up for some serious dancefloor destruction. What starts off as a pulsating acidic techno monster that creeps up from the depths of a pile of analog synthesizers, turns into a breakbeat chopping electro jam that will leave you behind with bleeding ears and thumping hearts, before the track jumps right back to techno peaktime. Adding a little bit of trancey pathos to the overall experience.

Nature Reverance (11:20)
Trance Ilvana (12:41)
Review: Are there any more iconic names in underground electronic music than Swiss-Chilean Luciano? He might not be at the peak of his powers but still has a wealth of skills and experience that mean his every release is always well worth checking. Here popping up on Germany label Basic he offers up the brooding atmospheres and floating pads of 'Nature Reverance' atop a rugged and raw drum line. 'Trance Ilvana' is dialled back a notch to ear-tickling frequencies and bubbling bass and drums that are only loosely defined but fully hypnotic.

Addis Meets The 18th Parallel - "Emergency" (version) (4:03)
Review: TRS and Addis Records come together in collaboration with legendary reggae singer Luciano for this hot new 7". The well kwon messenger comes through once more with another fine song that speaks to the modern times we live in. Supported by a solid reggae rhythm that's tough but elastic, his voice serves as a positive beacon of hope for all in these difficult times. The strictly limited 7" comes backed with a nice fleshy dub, too.

Barriere De Lumiere (Felipe Venegas Interpreation) (7:48)
Review: Felipe Venegas' Drumma imprint is back with a top release from one of minimal techno's true legends: Luciano. The Cadenza head honcho delivers two examples of his superb sonic sorcery on the Quarion EP. From the slinky and hypnotic epic "Barriere De Lumiere" making use of the Swiss-Chilean producer's examples of amazing hi-tech melodies, while "Be Bap Bop" is more straight-ahead, dancefloor ready tackle with its jacking reductionist bounce. On the flip, there's a remix by Venegas himself which takes "Barriere De Lumiere" down much funkier and polyrhythmic territory. It is perfect for those daytime party vibes on The White Isle this Summer.

Review: Cadenza head honcho Luciano has arranged a special series of EPs to coincide with the 15 year anniversary of his revered imprint, launching the first one here to begin the festivities. This chapter is dedicated to the summer season and contains five enchanting tracks with exquisite sounds. There are moments of lush and hypnotic freefall like on "The Amazing Lilou" and equally impressive when he dives deep into the exotic like on "Hiding Hearts" or "La Tirana Del Oriente" - the latter featuring wonderfully employed classical instrumentation. Elsewhere, lose yourself in the sonic sorcery of "Magik Mechanics" and its superb melodic minimalism - classic Luciano. Each episode of the series will be released every season.

Father
Review: Luciano's studio in Berlin: on any given afternoon, half a dozen people might roll by, from the Exercise One guys in the studio next door to likeminded Berliners to whoever might be in town for a gig. Some people need to lock themselves away in a sealed bunker, but Luciano's place isn't like that: it feels more like a salon. And with the speakers buzzing, the machines fired hot, and the hour growing fuzzier with each spliff, sometimes it can be quite an alchemical combination, the stuff of everyday life being spun into gold circuitry and filigreed beats. These two tracks are a lot like that. They're the work of Luciano and Thomas Melchior, a longtime Playhouse and Perlon artist and wry-smiled philosopher who doubtless needs no introduction. These two tracks are 25 minutes of the purest wordless communication, like two Scuba divers trading hand signals 10 meters down, or a locked gaze on the dance floor. You can hear bits of each individual in the mix-Melchior's characteristic skip and swing and his dexterity with vocal samples, Luciano's gliding polyrhythms and soft, seamless ruptures-but here their signatures blur into a fluid scrawl all its own.

Review: Hector's Vatos Locos label has slowly but surely put out a steady stream of contemporary minimal and tech house cuts but now it might have the biggest EP on its hands yet? the main man, Swiss Chilean innovator and menial pinup Luciano makes his mark in collaboration with Dani Ramos on two new cuts. 'How Soon Is Now' is all gurgling synths, dark cosmic tech funk and meandering basslines that are designed to warp your mind at 5am. 'Ufo's Call' is an even busier flurry of whirring machines and raw percussive hits, balmy circular pads and punch drums. Two Dewalta remixes seal this great deal.

L'enfance (Luciano remix) (11:51)
Review: Swiss-Chilean minimal man Luciano has been slowly but surely releasing a few tunes over the last couple of years having all but disappeared before that. That came after a decade or so at the very top of his game playing the world's first clubs and leading the minimal tree to its natural conclusion. Here he shows the sound still has legs with a couple of textbook tunes - they have snaking drums and stripped-back drums with stringy percussive lines over the top. They're heady and catchy once they lock you in.

Esperanza (Luciano Flow Latino mix) (16:45)
Esperanza (David Morales Red Zone mix) (11:03)
Review: Here's something we never expected to see: a musical hook-up between tech-house titan Luciano and veteran Def Mix sort David Morales, a man whose studio output has been rather limited in recent years. The duo wrote and produced the track together, before preparing individual interpretations. You'll find Luciano's Flow Latino Mix on side A. Clocking in at almost 17 minutes, it's an impressive exercise in percussion - think South American hand percussion underpinned by drum machines - with a thrillingly blissful three-minute ambient breakdown midway through. As you might expect, Morales' Red Zone Mix is a little "fuller" sound wise, with the veteran New Yorker wrapping picturesque synth lines and bubbly electronics around the duo's impeccable Latin percussion.

Review: Luciano is back on Perlon with "Fourges Et Sabres". The Swiss-Chilean sunnyboy and boss of Cadenza Records delivers this 30 minute two-tracker and goes deep. The a-side, "Fourges Et Sabres", already gained attention in 2006, travelling on CD-R around the world, as part of DJ-sets of the usual suspects. On the flipside Luciano takes us "Back To Front".

Review: On his first ever Mule Musiq release. Swiss-Chilean minimal maestro Luciano delivers some meditative journey music, full of repetitive patterns geared for stimulating the subconscious and designed to bring you to a higher level of energy and creativity. The Cadenza chief and Ushuaia resident claims a love of music with a dimension beyond the mainstream, and that sure is evident on this EP - featuring four sublime versions of the fittingly titled "Luci Neu House". Part 1 and 2 on the A side respectively are deep and hypnotic rollers which are perfect for those solitary moments on the dancefloor. On the flip, it's all about the life-affirming deepness of Part 4, which sure nails that summertime vibe with its soulful vocals.
