808 Doves

Disco/Nu-Disco
808 Doves (5:00)
Crystal Doves (4:44)
Review: Cheesy electro goodness from Canadian edit and remix machine Nick Bike, here indulging the humorous moniker Nicholas Bicicletta for the second of two 7" Kon editions. '808 Doves' comes through with glitzing hits, filter-freqqed lasershots, synth claves, and arpy sixteenths, all chalking up a downtown New York circa 1987 vibe. The free-as-a-bird theme is kept up with 'Crystal Doves', which concocts a sonic landscape picture of cathartic vocal gurgles and subby progressions, all against an epic collage made up of Crystal-Watery recognisance.

Crazy Beat (3:39)
Review: Edit master and disco king KON rarely ever misses whether seeing up his own sounds or digging deep to assemble one of his legendary collections. This time out he brings the goodness across a pair of disco house fusions on a self-released 7". 'Doves Your Love' opens up and is a mix of classic Prince and rolling house drums with a funky bassline from 'I Want Your Love' by Chic. A great collision it is too. 'Crazy Beat' then mashes together two more disco and funk classics into something irresistible to dancers.

19-2000 (Soulchild remix) (3:28)
Review: We now know that Daman Albarn's face-less and animated Gorillaz project was way ahead of its time. The tunes still stand up, too, with early hit 'Clint Eastwood' one of the best they did. It gets pressed dup here to this cheeky and limited 7", its low slung and downbeat groove topped with dub harmonicas and the drawling vocals of Albarn. On the flip is the more sunny, big beat offering of '19-2000' (Soulchild remix) which is lit up with naggy vocal hooks and singalong verses that are ripe for cheery party sessions in the great outdoors.

Go No Say (4:37)
Review: Here comes an all new and unknown edits labels with some playful disco house jams packed with characterful samples from Chaka Kenn. 'Dawn Breaker' opens up with freewheeling melodies and loose drum breaks that makes for a nice sunny vibe run through with jazzy Rhodes action. 'High Steaks' takes on a heavier house vibe with layers of lo-fi synth and some muffled vocals for company. Last of all is some playful swing that fuses house and hip hop over Hall & Oates bump and grind groove and filtered vocals. Useful tools for sure.

Sweet Freedom - "The Reflex Revision" (6:56)
Review: Michael McDonald anthem 'Sweet Freedom' is an epic of its era and here it gets a special revision from edit royalty The Reflex. It's a a one sided, highly weaponised 12" that fuses disco, soul, and oodles of good time vibes, all together into one killer cut. The vocal is the main draw - its clean and pure, and tugs at the heart. The drums are silky and slinky, the bass rumbles deep down below and there is a real sense of cosmic dust being sprinkled over the whole thing.

Soul Makossa (long version)
Review: Sampled by everyone from J-Lo to Jay-Z, Manu Dibango's 1972 classic is perhaps one of the most influential and heavily referenced afrofunk tracks of all time. Echoing with shades of every genre we know and love today, it still sounds just as timeless, infectious and ultimately agenda-setting today as the first time you heard it. If your collection doesn't sport this original yet, now is most certainly the time.

Flight Of The Eisenberg (6:29)

The Jubes (4:54)
Review: Ron's Reworks is a mysterious new edit label that deals in tweaking disco gems. Whether Ron is the name of the edit artist, or a nod to the fact these tunes might have been played Ron Hardy, we don't know, but we do know they are worth having: Gilles Peterson played the lush soul grooves of "Flight Of The Eisenberg" on his 6 Music show which should be all the support you need to know about, while "Heads" is a more deep cut of late night funk with playful riffs and a gorgeous vocal sample next to jazzy Rhodes keys. "The Jubes" ends things with a heartwarming gospel vocal from beautiful outfit The Supreme Jubilees that will leave you feeling warm inside.

They Speak Colour (5:41)

The Cull (3:24)
Review: Ron's Reworks, a series of scalpel jobs and lightly beefed-up reworks from Crazy P co-founder Jim Baron AKA Ron Basejam, has now reached its fourth volume. Predictably, the included material is every bit as well-crafted as its' similarly inclined predecessors. The standout is undoubtedly A-side 'They Speak Colour', a loopy, soft-focus disco-house jam whose relentless grooves, synthesizer splashes and simmering orchestration make it sound like Soundstream after a bong full of Marijuana smoke and several disco biscuits. Elsewhere, 'The City' is a canny revision of an unusual disco-boogie number that builds through sections of drums and cut-up, scat style vocals before finally flourishing late on, while 'The Cull' is a deep and meandering head-nodder tailor-made for warm-up sets and sit-down bar gigs.

Finger Lickin' Good (instrumental) (5:08)
Review: US singer, songwriter and producer Van Jones served up his 'Finger Licking Good' in 1986 and it has become one of those super sweet mixes of disco, boogie and funk that will now cost you a chunk of your wages to own on vinyl - until now. It is the most notable tune in Jone's small but well-formed discography, which included justly one album with 1981's Time Has Made Me New. The Prince-style falsetto vocal is what adds the real spice over timeless 80s drum sounds, low-slung boogie bass and some lush chord work. The instrumental on the flip is for those who like it more discreet.

Review: Zach Witness has plenty of fun on this new series of edits, remixes and bootlegs. They tap into all the cornerstones of house music - gospel vocals, ghetto grooves, soul, funk and deepness. 'Let House Reign' is a simple but effective opener with vocals that take you straight to church, while 'Lil Freak Mafia' is much more sleazy and dirty with its stacked up drums and bumping bass. Elsewhere there are big filter gems likes 'Int'l House Anthem', juke-adjacent cuts like 'Tom Ford Workout' and playful party starters like 'Trill House ENT'. A really useful collection, all in all.

Review: .Ron Basejam has always cooked up a wealth of characterful cuts across the house and disco spectrum. This unknown label is now home to a load more starting with the lovely soft focus chords and gospel tinged vocal bursts of deep house meditation 'We Need Change'. A house dub ups the energy a little with more cosmic sprinkles raining down over percussive grooves. 'BFG' then ups the disco quotient with elastic bass and leggy drums, a nice organic vibe and carefree chords. 'Blue' shuts down with some feel good soul and funk house fusion work.

Circuli (6:10)
Timer (3:45)
Review: A couple of years ago, Max Stocklosa debuted the Trii Group project - albeit under the alternative TRjj moniker - via a couple of decent releases on STROOM. This limited 45 marks the first Trii Group outing of 2021 and was made in cahoots with Hipolito, a fellow Cologne-based artist who has previously contributed to Stocklosa's cassette-heavy TRii Musik label. A-side 'Circuit' is odd but rather good, offering a glorious mixture of tipsy, inebriated new age electronics, distant vocals and chiming melodies. 'Timer' retains the same reverb-laden vocal sound, this time placing Hipolito's vocals atop undulating, lo-fi machine drums and the kind of bubbly, alien-sounding modular melodies that were once a feature of compositions by the Radiophonic Workshop.

In the past he has impressed on Kolour Limited and Banoffee Pies and now goes deep across a pair of jazz tinged deep house gems. 'Step Into Light' has a louche beat and piano lounge chords over the top of the shakers, dusty hits and mellifluous pads. 'Reflect & Heal' then speed sup little but is just as soft, cuddly, and richly melodic for those late night sessions.

Review: Get your hands in the air and wave them about like you just don't care, because this is exactly the sort of tune that will make you do that. It's built on huge old school referencing breakbeats, with just as retro piano chords layered over the top. Add in some twitchy acid sounds, slamming drums and a lung-busting diva vocal and you have an irresistible, festival sized house anthem that will unite all dancers in raptures. On the flip is a dub for those who like something slightly more subtle, but it still bangs like a heavyweight with her back against the ropes.

Review: Previously best known for their unique film scores, non-binary composer/producer Mica Levi has finally got round to recording a proper solo album. Ruff Dog, one of two such sets the artist is releasing this month (Blue Alibi being the other), is an undeniably murky and lo-fi affair, frequently combining gnarled, vicious guitar riffs, effects-laden audio fuzz, distant vocals and dream-pop tropes - as heard from a distance nd drenched in delay - to create fractured and enveloping soundscapes that defy easy categorization. The results are undeniably different and extremely hard to pigeonhole, but also curiously alluring despite their self-consciously lo-fi and challenging nature. There's great beauty within Levi's noise-seeped sonic fuzz.

As far as we know, this marks his first foray into making covers but hopefully will not be his last. On this super limited 12" he adds his own spin to music by Return To Forever, Weather Report and Chick Corea. Review: Savvas "DJ Savage" Georgiadis is a producer from Thessaloniki, Greece who put out some essential techno from the nineties onwards. Now, the best of it has been collected from the source and pressed onto and stamped wax for this white label reissue. The tunes come from between 2000 and 2002 and do not muck about. 'Long Time' is is a bumper, with sheet metal snares flapping in a stiff breeze, snatched vocal yelps and pummelling drum programming. 'Breaking Point' carries on where that one left off with its panel beaten loops. 'Cover-Up' is such a rush it nearly falls over itself and 'Threshold' brings some industrial energy.

Review: Last year, Session Victim joined forces with moustache-sporting keys-man (and fellow German producer) Erobique for a limited-edition "45" containing two live jams. That was decent, but this follow-up - a languid, laidback cover of Marc Almond song 'The City' - is even better. Sitting somewhere between Balearic soul and Rhodes-heavy horizontal jazz-funk, the trio's version features a hugely emotional, soft-touch lead vocal from Jamie Lloyd, some dazzling electric piano work from Erobique, and some suitably jazzy guitar touches. The impeccable vocal version comes backed with an equally as luscious instrumental take. There aren't many copies floating around, so move quickly if you want to acquire one.

They have put out nothing since but now return with this self released EP that is packed with heat. There is a wide array of reference points throughout, with 'Love By Figures' melting future jazz, garage and broken beat into a silky late night sound that seduces with its lithe synths and bumping drums. 'Monkey Blow' is glitchy minimal tech for the quiet hours and then its to the afters for the more tripped out 'Stretch Your Hands Out.' 'Gajin' is a lush downtempo closer.

Review: Tom Hingley And The Lovers release their second album 'Highlights' on Unknown Label. Three years in the making it is a work of art. Poetic, melodic and well worth the wait. 'Highlight' is the first release from the band since their critically acclaimed 2004 debut 'Abba Are The Enemy'. Where 'Abba' was a brash 200 mph Punk/Garage dash through topical subjects such as reality television, the Pop parade and War Mongering, 'Highlights' sees the band developing along a much more melodic soulful train of thought. Songs touch on such universal themes as love ('Highlights'), Religion ('All My Time'), Lions ('Venomous), Credit Crunch ('Kick out The Clocks') and the pretentious Manchester district of Chorlton Cum Hardy, which Tom can't afford to buy a house in and is not at all bitter about ('EverGreen').
