Review: A new project based out of Copenhagen - Aether's Spring comes shrouded in mystery but makes a bold statement with this first transmission. WATER: Dancing Moon 12" leads in with "House In Blue Rain," a downcast track bathed in melancholic pads and blown out percussion around a steady 4/4 tick. "Dancing Moon" is a more kinetic affair that works with all kinds of synth shapes alongside some primal drum machine percussion that lends the track a new wave quality that suits it just fine. Closer "Throne Of Clay" spreads across the B side in a brooding, journeying epic fit for the likes of classic James Holden or a more wave-minded Jon Hopkins.

In the early years of his career, OZY released a series of influential records on the Icelandic dub techno label Thule Records, paying homage to the Berlin dub sounds and the abstract shuffle rhythms of Cologne techno. In 2002, the legendary Force Inc./Mille Plateaux label released OZY's debut album Tokei, bringing Ozy to the attention of a wide international audience. Review: Following on from last year's impressive Redlight debut, Scott Hess is back on his Adeen label with another selection of warm and inventive house cuts splashed with colour and analogue wobbles precision-engineered to catch your ear. Lead track 'Sirius City' leans on a harmonically rich lead line and plenty of off-kilter wriggles to appeal to those who want some cheekiness in their tunes. 'UFO' sports a tasteful acid tweak running in between plush pads and snappy drums, while 'Call Me, Acid' plays around with telephone tropes to make a bleepy jam that will have the ID requests flying in. 'Stars' offers something sweeter to complete the set, spacing out the beats to leave the synths plenty of room to cavort around a celestial name-checking session for deep house dreamers.

Grand River's always-illuminating One Instrument label reawakens with a new album from Martin Sander and Michel Isorinne's Bandhagens Musikforening project. Having previously appeared on Northern Electronics and Semantica, now these two advanced synthesists place all their attention on a select few studio pieces to see how far they can take them. First up is the Roland System 100, which affords them plenty of tonal possibilities for the pulsing, kinetic 'Nedgravd I Naturen'. With the Yamaha DX-7 they create a towering ambient piece of FM synthesis, while the Roland SH-101 gets applied to a dense and detailed slice of obtuse leftfield techno. The Oberheim Matrix 6R becomes a vehicle for cinematic melancholy, and the Waldorf Microwave teases out an immersive swirl of ambience as you might well expect from the One Instrument series.

You may have already heard the track bouncing around the odd mix or two for those with a penchant for full-fat hard dance with a wry comedic edge. Review: Earlier this year Buchla synth expert and sometime Nine Inch Nails band member Alessandro Cortini delivered one of the most surprising and rewarding long players of 2014 in Sonno for Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions. The Italian pulls off another surprise move with a new project called Skarn on Shifted's Avian label, swerving from the majestic textures of Sonno into droning techno experimentation. Some three tracks long, Revolver finds Cortini toying with droning tones with the title cut a superb exercise in slowly building up a wall of oppressive, brutalist wave of noise over minimal beats. With material due on Panzerkreuz too, it's clear Cortini is currently enjoying an unpredictable chapter in a long and illustrious recording career.

Review: With an extensive legacy and a list of alter egos longer than your arm, Martin Damm aka Biochip C achieves a delicate balancing act on this 11 year old record, a handful of extras copies of which were recently unearthed in what can only be described as a highly fortunate 'warehouse find'. He pulls off a delicate balancing act here, letting the abrasive, industrial punk rock side of his music off the leash to frolic unhindered, while never losing sight of the needs of dancefloor and its needs across the six tracks. Highlights? Review: Club Night Club is a new Brooklyn label born out of an event series, and they're positioning themselves squarely in the leftfield of the contemporary techno scene with a wild EP from the lesser-spotted Herron. The Manchester-based artist has slipped out a few scattered releases over the past six years, from EPs on the meandyou label he helps run, and one big drop for Peder Mannerfelt's label. This fierce return to the fray shows the producer pushing a tough yet supple strain of mutant, stepped techno with soundsystem blood pumping in its veins. It's ludicrously high-end, swimming in needlepoint sound design and yet still rough as hell, and it comes very highly recommended.

Review: This special hand-stamped 12" from Heavenly Sweetness offers up unreleased remixes By Sergie Rezza of Cotonete's "Layla" track. The first is a slow motion groove with heavy electronics but a blissful set of chords and filtered vocal sounds bursting through the heavy clouds to bring moments of sheer pleasure. The no kick mix strips away the chugging drums to make for an ambient track that is almost as rhythmic thanks to the lead synth, and the final In Heaven mix is cast utterly free from this world. It leaves you drifting amongst the clouds, with slivers of melody gently drifting by.

While most of that is digital-only, now Cartulis have picked up on the considerable talents of this hardware lifer and presented five of his finest works on wax. The vibe veers tremendously, touching on dark and sinewy dungeon acid, boxy electro workouts, strangely psychedelic hardcore and plenty more besides. Hallam's style feels betrothed to the outboard approach - it's all synths and drum machines to these ears, and its immediacy is a big part of the charm. Following up their 2018 debut for Bologna-based label Random Numbers, the duo present their next collaboration for Glasgow's Phase Group which once again infuses dub electronics with cosmic and psychedelic influences. Review: Past Inside The Present is at it again, and by 'it' we mean both releasing great music and also doing so on unusual formats. This new single 'Cadere' is taken from Dawn Chorus and the Infallible Sea's forthcoming long-player, which will arrive in the Spring of next year, and it comes on a rather unusual glass-mastered 3" mini-CD which includes a download link and code. It's a lush and widescreen ambient single detailed with subtly uplifting chords coated in lo-fi hiss and hum. Also included is a live version of 'Alpha' which in its original form was on a previous album of the same name. It's from James Bernard and Kevin Sery and was recorded live at the Gothic Chapel in Indianapolis so has a decidedly spiritual edge.

Review: Following on from a successful pair of pressings Belfast based house music imprint Computer Controlled has released its next dosage of acid electronics - 'Untimely Emotions' EP courtesy of Gavin Guthrie aka TX Connect. The whole EP has a retroactive mindset with its percussion, bassline and playfulness but all the while maintaining a progressive attitude - with its layering of varying sounds seamlessly over one another on "Breaking", or even "Crystal Clear's" digitalised bleeps transcending the tone to a more science fiction locality. As a whole the production has a very physical feel which is felt throughout each piece and in particular on "Durable Chin" that begins with a simple DIY kickdrum followed by a crescendo of skilfully manufactured snares and bass. The most driving track 'Not Here' has a engrossing spooky aesthetic making it for a very interesting track to be set apart from the rest of the EP.

Review: Apoena is the alias of Henrique Casanova, a DJ and producer from Brazil who heads up Allnite Music which presents his latest effort titled Oceanos Extintos. The mesmerising dub tech house of opener 'Eu Lembro' calls to mind classic Thibideau brothers, leading in to the frozen borders of the title track which will engulf you in its cavernous sound. Review: Dealing with grief can be very tough. Many find that having a creative outlet proves useful. That's certainly the case for Seven Hills Records' regular Thee J Johanz, who wrote this EP while coming to terms with the death of his mother. Interestingly, it's not a particularly melancholic affair - it's too dancefloor-focused for that - but there's certainly a lot of emotion to be found amongst the chords, melodies and motifs. The standout, for us at least, is opener 'Where Goes Your Soul', where sharp, rising and falling electronic motifs ride a surging acid bassline and bustling machine drums. 'Two C Bee' sees him wrap wild, high-pitch acid sounds and bubbly, sequenced synth sounds around a chunky house beat, while 'Analex' is a formidably psychedelic slab of beat-free ambient exploration.

Review: Raiju Manah has been making music for well over a decade under various names. He's released on some big labels and always brings the rawness to his tracks. Now he is back with a new single on the Triamb label that comes with a wealth of great remixes. The original is 'Iron Age' and it is a raved up techno track with huge siren-like stabs, cantering drums and scraping percussion. Esther Duijn remixes it into a bulky, muscular banger and 'The Noize' is then a fizzing, spitting tune with caustic textures. Review: Tristan Watkins is exploring a horse-themed concept in earnest with his work as Phonopsia on his burgeoning Horse Category label. There's an inherent wonkiness to the sound on this third entry which possibly hints to the meaning behind this aesthetic, with 'Prepaternal (Paternal Revision)' leading in with some delightfully off-kilter synth action around a light and skipping house groove. 'Secrets Of The Pedal Bone' meanwhile deals in a quirky sound somewhere in the region of chiptune but with a little Ceephaxian bite, and 'Ooze' deals in some potent, dislocated techno. 'Figuring Out This Damn Jetpack' goes more explicitly towards 8-bit synth lines, but then gives them a walloping beat, making for some of the most distinctive club gear we've heard in a while.

Review: Following up releases by the likes of Mark Seven, Florist and Cygnus, Ari Goldman's Washington D.C-based World Building returns with this awesome varioust artist compilation. Neighborhood Watch Volume One features a wide selection of moods and grooves: NativeSun vs JamesBangura get stuck into some dark dubstep on 'Demon Mode' much like The Khan does later on the deeply meditative 'Part Of Me (Ode To DC), while Sami gets their swing on with the classic house of 'Marty & Jack', Juana's tunneling 'It's Low' gives you a dose of heroin house and over on the flip Max D gets deep down and dirty on 'No Snare'.

Review: It would be fair to say that Levon Vincent's latest single could well be one of his strongest yet - and that's saying something. We're particularly enjoying A-side "Drum Circle", a near ten-minute outing that subtly builds throughout. Creepy, clandestine and intoxicating, it sees Vincent cloak a hypnotic, cymbal and bells-heavy rhythm track with deep, booming sub-bass pulses and hard-worked, marimba style melodic loops. It's a genuine heads-down treat that packs a punch, despite its hazy and minimalist vibe. There's more atmospheric fun on the flip, where "Space Exploration" sees him conjure up a suitably dark, intergalactic mood via crackling drums, opaque chords and far-sigted electronic melodies.

Review: Some 14 years after he unleashed the original version of 'The Medium Is The Message' - an attractively deep and melancholic chunk of hypnotic, dub-tinged early morning techno hypnotism - Levon Vincent has decided to revisit and re-make the track on a surprise sequel. On the A-side 'Long Mix', his full vision for the track is materialised, with the original's familiar riffs re-played in hazier, harder form atop a raw, stabbing bassline, more subtly forthright beats and effects-laden percussive fills. It's a brilliant revision all told, which maintains some of the original's sonic poignancy whilst adding a little extra weight and energy. The flip side 'Short Mix' naturally compresses the action, emphasising his breathless percussion builds and the mind-mangling sonic stabs.

Review: Jinn April is a South Korean born, now Detroit based artist who moved to the Motor City in pursuit of the music she loves. She has since established herself in the city as DJ PIA with sets at all the right venues and a cross-genre style that is the norm for the originators in the Mid West. Now comes her own self released first EP, and it's a fine one. "Heal Myself N Moving On" is raw, unapologetically rough house with hi hats, gauzy chords, wooden hits and knackered kicks all chucked into a loose mix and allowed to evolve on their own. "Somewhere Deep In My Heart" is another ramshackle mix of odd melodies and detuned jazz, while "Reincarnation" is a melange of keys and chords, occult synth sounds and icy hi hats that is purely experimental and "You Can Do It Baby" ends in similarly singular fashion. This is exactly the sort of unusualness you would expect of an artist who has established herself in Detroit.

Review: Burnski's Instinct alias has given rise to two full-length albums and a swathe of EPs in just the past two years alone, and now he's heralding spring with the launch of a new label, Abyla, and his most delicate, ambient record to date. Happening is a far cry from what you might know of Burnski or indeed the Instinct project overall, focusing as it does on orchestral ambience with a preference for plaintive piano lines at the front of the mix and ample drone matter backing it up. These short vignettes glide between moods, hovering in moments of tender minimalism or bursting with effervescence depending on the situation.

Review: Dynamo Dreesen and Sven Rieger wrote, recorded and mixed the two tracks on this limited edition, hand stamped 12"l back in spring of 2019. It was just after their first ever live tour of Japan as DRESVN's and lays out their slow, meditative take on techno. 'Track 1' slowly but surely builds the pressure with percolating bass and silvery drum loops that get you into a state of hypnosis. 'Track 2' exceeds eight minutes and is a more tight, intense series of loops that are run through with some dreamy cosmic melodies that take the edge of the machine automated sound of the drums.

Review: Bezier returns to Dark Entries with Valencia, a six track rumination on memory, geography, and transmutation. Multi-instrumentalist Robert Yang's Bezier project has appeared on Dark Entries many times over the last decade, most recently with the 2018 LP Parler Musique. Says Yang, "What started as a project to investigate the love of the sound and scenery while living in San Francisco quickly developed into a passionate search for interlocking melodies and driving rhythms." On Valencia, Bezier invokes twinned places. The Valencia Street of San Francisco is channeled, which was the center of the city's vibrant new wave scene in the 1980s. But also echoed is Valencia, Spain, and La Ruta del Bakalao aka La Ruta Destroy, the Spanish clubbing scene throughout the 80s and 90s famed for its aggressive and synthetic sounds. Valencia is a darker record for Yang, exploring themes of submission and catharsis with nods to SF's gay leather bars of the 70s and 80s. The high BPM salvos of "Valencia" and "Scrupulous" capture the frantic energy of Bakalao and Valencian wave acts like Oltima Emocion. Elsewhere Yang mines the dreamy space disco and Hi-NRG sounds they're known for, like on the brooding "Past the Marshes" or the anthemic "Reservoir", which features their partner Len.Leo on vocals. Bezier deftly navigates past and present, light and dark, pain and pleasure, the stasis of memory and the flux of time. Valencia was mastered by Alex Michalski, with EQ for vinyl done by George Horn. Gwenael Rattke designed the sleeve, which features an 80's punk zine-esque geometric grid pattern mirroring San Francisco street maps. Also included is a 5x7 postcard with notes.

Review: Bigeneric was the alias of veteran Swiss producer Marco Repetto, under which he released the now legendary Venydia EP back in 1995 on The Spacefrogs label. Diamonds & Pearls Music now reissues this seminal classic, which features the evocative title track - a true zeitgeist which treaded similar sonic territory as Laurent Garnier at the time, while on the B side 'Styrax' is a more minimalistic and rhythm-based cut similar to what another contemporary, Plastikman, was doing. Review: The second salvo on Further Electronix's Shakesphere sub-label comes courtesy of Charles Green, a producer of underground techno and electro previously best known for his releases on Four Triangles and Hardgroove. His trademark style - forthright, energetic and often intense - comes to the fore on EP opener 'Edit Generation', a slamming slab of warehouse-ready techno-pump rich in beefy kickdrums, creepy sounds and loopy late-night riffs, and can also be heard on 'Mind Restore', which sounds like a wholehearted tribute to rave-era techno (all fizzing melodic riffs, deep bass and sweaty drums). Over on side B, 'Resolve Jam' is a more sci-fi flavoured techno joint, while 'Solus' is a gorgeous fusion of echoing dub techno motifs, broken techno drums and glassy-eyed electronics.

Review: Astonishingly, nearly seven years have passed since the last 12" single from Young Marco hit stores. While he's kept himself busy co-curating two volumes of proto-trance anthology series Planet Love and recording a tropical-tinged album (2019's hazy and home listening-focused Bahasa), it's still nice to see him refocus on delivering future dancefloor anthems. 'I'm Still Mellow' is a wholehearted tribute to a psychedelic, sample-heavy Dutch style of the early '90s known as Mellow, which was a kind colourful and loved-up take on British hardcore and European techno. Young Marco's interpretation is simple but devastatingly effective, with fluttering synth sounds and gorgeous electronics tumbling down over a booming bassline and heavyweight breakbeats. Turn to the flip and you'll find a fully psychedelic backwards version. Trippy!

Review: Josh Dahlberg is The Valley and the Mountain aka TVTM and is an artist who has made a big move recently from the deep westside of Detroit all the way across to the far reaches of the Pacific Northwest. He he arrives on Central Scientific for its inaugural release with Detroit-based producer and Akka & BeepBeep founder, Jo Rad Silver, taking care of the flip. Next to an array of hardware, there is plenty of improvisation with guitars in this EP - 'Experiment Obscura' is a widescreen and dramatic ambient cut with a meditative feel and 'Immersion Theatre III' is another empty but inviting piece with curlicues, wispy pads, distant guitar echoes and moodiness to spare.

Review: Design Default first emerged back in 2018 with a release on Fragil Musique - the vivid, finely sculpted ambient LP Dawn Chorus. Now they're back with a new album, this time on New York label Club Night Club (who put out the excellent Herron Lowflow EP. The vibe is decidedly different, dealing in punchy electronica workouts with ample sonic manipulation and high production values. 'Lyrids' has enough brute force and deft dynamics to snap your head clean off, in the club or elsewhere, while 'Quarantids' teases between lush ambience and gravelly future-tech beats. 'Geminids' ramps up the industrial strength drum hits and nudges the tempo in kind, but still the artful programming and visceral mixing prowess is on full display - something Significant Other steps up to on their remix too.

Review: Oliver Hess made his first appearance way back in 2006, producing alongside Harada on Pearldiver Records. We didn't hear any more from him for a fair while, but then in 2018 he resurfaced with some quality tech house gear via the Musik Is Egall label out of Cologne. Now Hess is back for a third instalment with 'Don't Be Anybody Else', a mid-tempo chugger with an acidic bite just crying out for a dark n' dirty basement. On the flip, the tempo ramps up considerably as Orlando Voorn takes the reins for a remix bristling with Detroit techno intensity.

Review: DJ F16 Falcon's music has always been tricky to pigeonhole, with the fast-rising French producer frequently fusing dub-wise rhythms and off-kilter beats with unusual samples, Tolouse Low Tracks style experimental electronics and melodic elements that doff a cap to tropical, new age and world music. Ici Commence La Nuit, his latest excursion, treads a similar sonic path, delivering unusual but wonderfully inventive and entertaining excursions. The most accessible and warming of the lot is colourful, melodious and bass-heavy opener 'Ici Commence La Nuit', though the sludgy, modular-rich pulse of 'Trip a La Mode de Quand' and thoroughly odd 'Clope Sucree' are equally as potent.

Review: When launching Jeff Thompson and co-producer Eqwel's Amalgamated Metals series of seven-inch singles earlier in the year, Sacred Rhythm chief Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell warned that a number of releases would be needed to, in his words, "harden the strongest solder possible to resist the corrosive nature of tasteless dance music". Release number two is certainly sturdily soldered, with A-side 'Gallium' delivering a forthright blend of galloping, metallic drum hits, hissing cymbals and spooky, otherworldly synth sounds. 'Iron Ferrum' is strikingly different, with distant-sounding metallic noises disappearing underneath a thick, beat-free coat of bubbly acid lines and immersive ambient chords.

Review: Lowfreq77 is taking no prisoners as he steps up to deliver the second release on Summa Cum Laude. The Italian producer has only emerged in the past few years, despite having dedicated a great deal of his life to producing music. It was clearly worth the wait - "1804" is the kind of fist thumping techno that leaves no body motionless as it rips its way through the dance in a hail of relentless claps and nagging synth hooks. "Rails" meanwhile amps up the Robert Hood style twitchy loops, making this a techno record for those who like their beats pure and unrelenting.
