Review: This 40th anniversary reissue of The Pop Group's seminal Y Live album is a timely reminder of what a game changer it was. Hugely inventive and original upon initial release in 1979, it is still an alarming and arresting record of experimental noise. Manic vocal samples, caustic guitars, detuned synths and dishevelled drums make it a tribal and dystopian fusion of unease and terror. It includes tracks recorded in New York, Manchester and Brussels and all re-cut to half speed vinyl, with a special 12" including "She Is Beyond Good & Evil" and "3'38" as well as a special poster.

This is no criticism, though, just a reflection that while contemplative at times, one of the most joyous things about the album is Cortini's ability to build thrilling walls of sound.

'Auris' is a clean and colourful EP aimed more at the listener hoping to lock in than let loose; this is music for flow states, not uppers, downers or benders. Review: With Ben Frost's Aurora album amongst many people's end of year lists, Mute draw together a selection of remixers for this Variant 12" whose collective reputation is every bit as impressive. You really aren't ready for this line up. First up, you got Evian Christ's broken, pseudo-bass version; next, Dutch E Germ transforms the original into a broken, swinging bundle of percussion; while HTRK delivers a fine concoction of steely drum machine licks and kicks on their slower remix. On the flip it's all about the floor, where Kangding Ray calls all the ravers and dishes out the techno servings on his mutation of "No Sorrows", whereas Downwards boss and Birmingham techno pioneer Regis turns up with a hollow, muscled roller for the late hours. All in all, a pretty banging affair.

Now we have the remixes, which have a lot to live up to but come with plenty of promise.
After all, the chosen producers involved are all heavyweights in their own right, and were certainly ready to step up to the mantle here. Opening with a pair of tracks made different by two of Brazil's most revered techno heads - ANNA and Wehbba - from there we get Berghain bass experimentalist Barker, the fury of Rrose, and percussive wonder of JLin, and that's before we come to the likes of Chris Liebing and Kangding Ray.

Review: Depeche Mode man Martin Gore's The Third Chimpanzee, his first solo release for years, rightly won plenty of plaudits on its release earlier this year, with fans and critics warming to its modular synthesizer-driven blend of industrial-influenced rhythms, IDM electronics and growling, post-ambient noise. There was certainly plenty of great sounds for remixers to play with, so it's little surprise to find that this remix set is genuinely superb. Brazil's ANNA sets the tone with a gentle, IDM-meets-tech-house take on 'Howler', Chris Liebing turns 'Vervet' into a moody techno classic and Barker provides a wonderfully slow-burning, ever-building rework of 'Mandrill' that's worth the admission price on its own. Throw in equally impressive revisions from the likes of Jlin and Kangding Ray, and you have a superb set of reworks.

It's certainly a pretty wild experience. Like the preceding lone wolf album, MG, here MG the guy gives us five tracks of synth goodness made on modular consoles. Visiting post-ambient, IDM and industrial noise, or rather luring those elements out of their natural comfort zones and into an atmosphere that almost feels as though you're lost in nature, it's a real opportunity for escapism at a time when many of us have never needed one more.

Review: Solo releases from Depeche Mode mainstay Martin Gore are a genuine rarity. To date, he's released just one solo set under his given name - 2003's Counterfeit2 - and another as MG, some six years ago. The Third Chimpanzee, his first lone release of any sort since, is effectively a scaled-down sequel: a five-track EP/mini-album of electronic instrumentals created using a battery of modular synthesizers. It's as quietly impressive as you'd expect from gore, with clanking, industrial-influenced rhythms, IDM-informed synth sounds and growling, post-ambient noise being joined by early Depeche Mode style stabs and dark, growling motifs. Gore's sonic standards remain predictably high throughout, though we'd suggest starting with the Bladerunner-esque future dystopia of 'Howler' and the metallic, mind-altering intensity of 'Mandrill'.

Review: In 2015, long-serving Slovenian experimentalists Laibach became the first Western band to perform in North Korea, including a number of songs from "The Sound of Music" - a favourite in the DPRK since the 1960s - alongside their own material. Three years on, and with the assistance of Silence's Boris Benko and vocalist Marina Martensson, they've finally delivered their interpretation of the musical film's familiar soundtrack. Swaying between rock balladry, experimental synth-pop, darker tones and industrial style fuzziness, the band's covers are both revolutionary and revelatory, as staples such as "The Lonely Goatherd", "My Favorite Things" and "Do-Re-Mi" are given radical makeovers. As they did at the concert that inspired the set, they also give their interpretation of some traditional North Korean folk songs.
