Review: Roma Zuckerman investigates the intriguing idea of 'The Phenomenon of Provincial Mentality' on his new EP for Gost Zvuk. As is often the way with techno from Russia, this is evocative, sparse material with fizzing lo-fi details and hints of distant transmissions from long-lost worlds. 'Nightmare Forms' gets things underway in dubby and rolling fashion and elsewhere you have warped mind melters like 'Arzt' with their pulsing sonar signals, more crunchy and off-grid workouts like the trippy 'I Play Everyday'. There a more frozen techno landscapes like the icy '4CH005I' to complete what is a bold double album.

New Life (Planet Earth mix) (7:14)
Review: The cultured La Bella Di Notte label out of Italy has already won our hearts with an array of fine reissues and here comes another one to start off 2024 right. Zero Origin's 'New Life' came in 1996 and is the work of Nathanael Heres, who dropped only a handful of EPs between 1994 and 1996. This one, like most of them, is much sought after and fairly pricey if you can find it. It is a raw exploration of stripped back house, techno and dub with well swung drums with an original, Se Da remix and more breakbeat driven Planet Earth mix.

Review: Resilient Recordings launches with a strong sonic statement from Zero Dayz that presumably lays out its intent going forwards. His 'Sacred Business' is a fizzing and full throttle techno cut with old school 90s influences from view game soundtracks. It fires lasers out like bullets from a machine gun and never quits. 'Energy Flash' legend Joey Beltram remixes with even more potency and DAVE The Drummer adds some flat-footed drums to his version. Gareth Wild closes out with jungle breaks but techno kicks that keep you rooted.

El Susurro Del Diablo (7:31)
Review: After a sweet debut offering in July of 2023, Alter Alter makes a return to the fry with a first new offering of the new year. The Zurich-based imprint is doing a fine job of turning attention on its home scene and this time out it is Zenk at the buttons. He offers four fresh sounds, starting with 'Fubrilion' which is all silvery tech loops and minimal glitch. 'Gork' explores a similar sound world but with even more gritty sounds and silky drum loops. 'Dark Pleasure' is then a fleshy and dubbed-out sound that is in constant motion with its myriad little sonic details and 'El Susurro Del Diablo' closes out with heavy, dubby loops and mystic synth ambience.

Review: An incredible roster is drafted for this very rare rethink and revisitation of work by the mighty Dutch oddities ZEA, a band most probably won't be too familiar with, and, as a quick Google will tell you, are definitely not ZE:A, a South Korean boy band who make decidedly more chart friendly (in South East Asia at least) forms of music. Instead, these Netherlanders are known for their Kraut, kosmische, post punk, DIY electro stylings, and those building blocks make for some excellent reworking courtesy of a cast from various sites of steeped musical heritage. Andy Moor (The Ex, Amsterdam), Desmond Denker, Phanton, and Begritty (Cologne), Yurke (Dusseldorf), Istari Lasterfahrer (Hamburg), Dubby King Knarf (Knarf Rellom, Hamburg) all offer their own takes on that which was already difficult to describe, making for a strange and beguiling collection which is impossible to say no to.

Review: Zackey Force Funk and XL Middleton joined forces on the boogie powered electro-disco album Blue Blade Piranha and served up a journey that fuses funk and electronica in fresh new ways. The album features Zackey's distinctive vocals, known for their raw energy, paired with XL Middleton's unrivalled production prowess. The result is a genre-defying experience, where funky basslines intertwine with futuristic beats that showcase this duo's ability to push sonic boundaries and create a groove-laden soundscape that nods to the past while embracing the cutting edge. With its infectious rhythm and experimental flair, the collaboration stands as a testament to innovation as well as being irresistible to the hips.

Review: YTP, Raw Takes, Ole Mic Odd & Alonzo, and Chupacabras are all back once again for some more authentic sounds from the underground. These more than able producers land on a hand-stamped translucent green wax 12" that marks the second installment in the Source Material Various Artist series. Just like the first, this is a monster outing with four searing electro cuts that bring intergalactic warfare to any party. '116ctro' is a visceral cut with corrugated rhythms and zippy synths. 'And We Rock' has a funky broken beat and tons of reverb and 'Compassion' slows it down a touch but has lashing synths and thunderous kicks to keep you moving.

Collaborations with Massimiliano Pagliara, Brame & Hamo, and Pablo Bozzi enrich the diverse array of sounds he explore after making a name for himself with a modern take on 90s club music that blends prog, trance, EBM, breakbeat and techno with nostalgic elements from rave culture's many idiosyncrasies. It is infused with contemporary electronic elements so tracks like 'Zarathustra Dance' and 'Eternal Sunshine Of Solitary Mind' showcase a dynamic sound, while 'Music Will Never Stop, Heartbeat Will Never Fade, Party Will Never End' encapsulates the eternal essence of the thing we call rave.

Review: Ewan Smith's first 12" of 2018 sees him return to the welcoming embrace of Aus Music, a label he last graced almost three years ago. This time round, there are three tracks to choose from. A-side "Ideal-Passage", a bouncy, techno tempo workout blessed with a restless, undulating bassline, dreamy chords and the kind of clipped guitar samples that were once the preserve of French Touch producers, undoubtedly steals the show, offering the perfect balance between funk-fuelled dancefloor antics and head-in-the-clouds beauty. This vibe continues on the arguably deeper and even more melodious "Thewizzwasfordillysmissus", while closer "Sicko" wraps a chunky, UK garage-influenced rhythm track in tech house style electronics glitches and yearning synth stabs.

When I Wake Next To You (8:20)

I Want More Of You (Superlounge remix) (7:34)
Review: Following the release of the (rather good) multi-artist EP, Balance, Satya is back to serving up solo showcases - in this case a third label outing from sometime All Day I Dream contributor YokoO. He begins in typically warm and woozy fashion, wrapping rising and falling analogue synth sounds, cut-up vocal snippets and tech-tinged electronics around a deep-tech groove ('When I Wait Next To You'), before reaching for more minimalistic beats, trippy noises and wobbly, UKG style sub-bass on 'I Look at You'. 'I Want More of You', which boasts selected vocal snippets from a late-80s classic, is pleasingly dubby, dreamy and ultra-deep - the EP's most potent moment in our book. German duo Superlounge's accompanying remix is a little breezier and looser, despite the presence of locked-in tech-house beats.

Review: The king is dead, long live the king, as they say - except in this case the late king is DJ Bone's legendary Subject Detroit label, which has now been shuttered after 25 years, and the newly anointed king is his new outlet Further, taken from his Amsterdam parties of the same name. It kicks off with a pair of new EPs on the same day and this is the first from Yeti Mind Tricks. 'We Ain't Like Them' is a hammering Motor City techno cut for the peak time which Bone remixes into a more stripped-back but no less edgy and potent cut. On the flip are 'Bimini Road' and 'Vandelay,' both of which bring stylish techno drenched in machine soul.

Review: Goettingen's long standing dub techno servant XDB takes us to Chicago At Midnight with this new 12" on Pariter. 'Fenders' is one and is a deliciously elastic rhythm with rolling kick drums setting a hypnotic groove as the bubbly synths rise up through the mix. 'Cagomi', more edgy and amped up with gritty hits and swaying bass, gets a new lease of life after first surfacing on XDB's Metrolux Music back in 2009. The same cut gets a remix from Delano Smith that's more rooted to the floor in the Detroit man's usual textbook style. A classy outing from all, then.

Review: Peak Oil welcomes UK duo Wrecked Lightship for 'Antiposition', a debut EP on the label from the pair of Laurie Osborne (once known as Appleblim) and Adam Winchester aka Dot Product. The pair refine their sound and bring a range of innovative rhythms here with elements of dub, d&b, tribal sounds and deft sound design across hard-to-define cuts. 'Hex' is a cosmic broken techno trip, 'Bizarre Servants' is a slower and heavier dub and 'Sunken Skies' is prickly and kinetic as it flirts with live sounding drum & bass tropes and 'Diminished Ark' as well as with wispy sine waves, refracted melodies and barely there rhythms.

The six tracks layer up polyrhythmic hand percussion with sonorous bells and are all brought to life with modular synthesis and deft sound design that takes you deep into a humid jungle where moisture drips from the leaves and psychedelia lurks around every corner. It is both a heady and a heavy trip into worldly and dubby techno rhythms that will leave you feeling keen to hear more from the man.

Review: All we really know about this one is that The Wolf is an artist based in Berlin. He has started his own label here to serve up his latest studio concoctions and this first one is all about slamming minimal cuts. All of them are untitled in true underground minimal fashion, of course and the first one pairs rickety lines with under-lapping bass and dreamy chords. The second one heads to the stars with Detroit style pads smeared about the mix over punchy but stripped back rubber kick patterns and last of all is a more thumping deep house groove with more liquid pad work and a sense of serenity.

'T Total' is a perfectly infectious swinger with rasping bass notes and crisp percussion that will get faces screwed up and floors pumping. 'Aphrodite Curse' picks up with more damn sexy sound designs and super silky grooves that will take any crowd for a cruise. There is some bright and old school piano action to 'With Me' while 'Keep It' then offers a turbocharged future house excursion that is all about the good times.

Review: A Detroit electro-bass classic! 'Boomin'' originally appeared on Will Web's second EP release, 'Extraterrestrial Phunk', on the legendary Detroit label Direct Beat in 1996. It was also featured in Dave Clarke's seminal 1998 'Electro Boogie' mix release. This long-overdue reissue includes the remastered original mix, as well as two previously unreleased versions - the 'Alt Mix' and 'Bonus Beats'. All versions of the track portrary a hollowed-out, leaden vision of the alt-future and command a fantastic use of reverb and space, as if the music were being blasted through a cybernetic bullhorn; everything sounds impressively analog, but the tracks all escape the common electro pratfall of requiring everything to sound front-and-centre.

This is his first full length LP since back in 2017 when he dropped Cosmic Path on the Infrastructure New York label. Pleasure Builder is a techno album with a difference as it has rich astral atmospheres and ambient synth adding detail to the physical drums. This one, OK, opens with 'Amber' which is a nice undulating and deep cut with lush synth smears. 'Emptiness' hangs synths in the air over more lithe broken beats and 'Felt' is a stripped back rhythm with majestic chords, blurts, bleeps and more all adding colour. 'Hesitation' and 'Burton' round out this sublimely supple and subtle synth record.

Six years ago, Vince Watson released a digital-only compilation marking two decades since his first release, in the process providing updated re-makes and remixes of some of his best-loved cuts. The versions on this 12" appeared on that set but have not been released on vinyl before. His re-wire of 1999 cut 'Mystical Rhythm' is little less than sonically gorgeous, subtly updating Watson's classic, Detroit influenced sci-fi techno sound to include all manner of spacey chords, warming organ sounds and jazzy, life-affirming synth solos. His version of 2000's 'Moments in Time' is even deeper and more intergalactic in tone, delivering heart-aching Motor City style machine soul by the boat-load. In a word: stunning.

His intricate minimal style is laid bare here from the off with 'Aesthetic Solutions' offering up a colourful mix of trippy sound designs and sci-fi moods over slick tech drum programming. 'California Cruise Control' gets deeper, with a more prominent squelchy bassline taking centre stage. 'Underexposure' then ups the ante with a more cosmic and driving techno sound and last of all is 'Areola 51', another one built from silky loops and futuristic synths over crisp tech house beats.

Voices From The Lake is the pairing of Italian techno craftsmen and sound sculptors Donato Dozzy and Neel. They came together to do a live show at the famed Labyrinth festival in Japan and that's what gave rise to this new now seminal album. It's a deeply meditative and dubbed-out world of delicate synths and rolling drums that change only slightly and slowly but manage to keep you utterly locked in for the duration. It's pure techno that has been remastered for this new edition across eight sides of wax. An absolute modern classic for sure.

Review: Italian house and techno powerhouse Vithz openly admits he can't dance, but isn't that the whole point of music production - to provide refuge for the less somatically, more cerebrally inclined? It would certainly seem so: Vithz seems perfectly happy behind the knobs and buttons, laying down four behind-the-curtain conspiracies to fill floors on behalf of label Suena Hermosa, perhaps so that he need not himself. Opener 'Break The Beat' is the choppy, vocal-stuttering, short-filling minimal house opener, shortly followed by the titular sampled mutterings of 'Can't Dance', across which oncoming tides of reversed chord stab lap against a muffed garage house propulsion. Then there's the B's wonk-out that is 'Groove Republic', sounding like the inside of a Tardis turned jazz bar, while the closing collab with Emanuele Barilli, 'Sometimez', moves the utmost deep and subbiest.

Review: **RAUM REPRESS** Although Ricardo Villalobos has already appeared on Raum Musik under the RiRom moniker together with Roman Flugel, the Baby EP is his first full release for the label. The title track sees a firm kick and wood block snares forming the backbone for a drifting piano chord and sensual vocals which lead to a climax of delightfully glitchy vocoder. On the flip, "hansup" takes on a tougher groove, as sprung bass and minimal house stabs are joined by ethereal chords and twisted vocal samples.

Review: Brazilian producer Villaca's brand of minimal is uniquely airy, retro, and more tongue-in-cheek than any appeal to 'serious music' might inspire. It's this peculiar use of hollow acid and snappy drum machine analogia that makes us feel like an insomniac amnesiac as we sift through each track on the 'Nostalgia' EP. They sound like the playful theme-tunes of a trickster-god from another dimension, sent through a crack in time to ours with the sole task of sprinkling sleep dust in our eyes. A hopeful, tasteful slice of analogue exotics, 'Nostalgia E Assim' is especially convincing in its choice of samples, recalling a more novel, cutesy minimal house version of Lanark Artefax's 'Touch Absence'. Meanwhile, B-siders like 'Castle' whistle and slide away, losing the listener in ever-expanding halls of mirrors.

Review:  Vertical67, who also runs the The Vortex Traks label, gets Analogical Force underway for 2024 with this adventurous new album, Changes. The man born Thomas Pahl has worked under several aliases over the last ten years plus and uses this one for fierce electro that takes no prisoners. His discordant sound emerges again here with plenty of fusions of dreamy melodies, angst-ridden breakbeats, reflective sonic vistas and rugged machine rhythms. Some of our faves include the tumbling arps and lithe bass of 'Moments Of Jo' and more menacing moods of 'Fading Memories'. It all adds up to a far-reaching album and hugely compelling journey.

Review: Versalife is a master of the deep and one of many aliases from the Dutchman born Boris Bunnik. From dub to techno to the electro he explores here, his grainy sound is impossibly atmospheric. 'Copepods' opens up with far-sighted and sustained chords that speak of a future metropolis and 'Ultraviolet' then rides a lush broken rhythm and has melodies that glow like fireflies. 'Counter-illumination' gets more turbulent with its edgy lines and rubbery reverberating bassline and 'Vortex Storm' is like a reflective hall of mirrors with tension and eeriness in the air.

Patterns (Donato Dozzy rework) (6:45)
Patterns (Grand River rework) (8:56)
Review: Cedric Vermue's Perpetua album from this time last year explored neo-classical and ambient with a mix of piano, organ, synthesizer, electronics, woodwinds, horn and even a female choir. Now one of its most standout cuts gets reworked into a more club-ready sound by master sonic craftsmen. Italian deep techno son Donato Dozzy goes first and brings his signature smoothness, supple rhythms and bubbly drum and bass combos for a delightfully heady trip. Then comes a Grand River rework, also of 'Patterns', that is more tense and textural with fizzing drones marbling the rising synth work and suggestive minimal rhythm.

It's Funky (6:07)
Review: Adam Beyer's Drumcode label is very nearly at its 300th release, which is a fine achievement by anyone's standards. Here he taps up Veerus for more of the Swedish imprints signature main room techno tackle and he doesn't fall short. 'Cycle' is full of the sort of drama you expect from this label - flat, driving drums, synths fired from a machine gun, strobe lit pads and frazzled textures to make for exciting and impactful experiences. 'It's Funky' on the flip is another big one with thunderous clasp and drums all sweeping dancers off their feet.

Review: All Day I Dream's Lee Burridge is a man who has walks managed to reinvent himself. Right now he is in his dreamy deep house phase and his label is the best out there for these sort of organic day time grooves. Now well past the 100 releases mark it is back with a new winter sampler full of heartwarming sounds from key label associates like Simon Vuarambon. Homeless, Facundo Mohrr, Maxi Degrassi and more. Each one layers up zoned out pads, soft rhythms and gently persuasive sounds that will have you in a trance in no time.

Review: Bobby Donny has assembled a fine array of artists for this first various artists collection, Bodoace. Nanky Nimbo opens up with the deep wand warm pulsations of 'Twilight' while Boy Berger get gets more twisted with some warped synth textures over infectious and dusty drum work on 'Nexus Fusion.' Frits Wentink pumps the party with some edgy vocal loops on 'Smack Down' and the B-side trip all come good too with the subtly euphoric house of Prince Palmer's 'Pressure' and a more twisted take on things from Striker Fox. It's Wim Waldo who then shuts down with 'Nightclub Fantasies.'
