Yellow Jackets Vol 5

Arbeid Adelt! - "Death Disco" (Marcellus Pittman Alive Disco edit) (5:30)
Hieroglyphic Being - "An Astronomical Object" (6:29)
Review: Mother Tongue's 'Yellow Jackets' series is wilfully eclectic, meaning second-guessing what will be on the next release is nigh-on impossible, but undeniably essential. Put simply, each EP in the series so far has been nigh on essential. Happily, volume five is superb too. On side A, Detroit scene stalwart Marcellus Pittman does a superb job of reworking a cult classic - Belgian outfit Arbeit Adelt's 1983 post-punk masterpiece 'Death Disco'. His resultant re-edit emphasises the track's weighty, low-slung groove, mind-mangling electronics and weirdo noises, extending the intro and outro to allow DJs to ride the mix. Over on side B, Chicagoan genius Jamal Moss dons the Hieroglyphic Being guise and offers up a sublime slab of intergalactic excellence, peppering a deep, shuffling, distorted rhythm track with spacey electronics and shimmering, star-gazing melodies.

Keep Your Mind Open (12:40)
That Is The African Name Of God (10:46)
Review: The Bedouin imprint continues on with its quest for the sublime and exotic in modern techno and house music. Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being & The Truth Theory Trio delivers more of his signature dusty lo fi electronics but gets an industrial tinged stomp on with "Keep Your Mind Open" and it's absolutely killer. On the flip is "That Is The Name Of The African God" which is an analogue jam that sounds more like the Hieroglyphic Being we know. Where yet again he goes searching for the soul in the circuitry and he certainly finds it, as you'll hear for yourself!

Review: Jamal Moss doesn't mess around. The legendary Chicagoan is impressively prolific, and seemingly able to knock out a new album or double EP in a matter of days, rather than weeks or months. Cosmic Bebop is his latest set of no-nonsense jack tracks; an eight-track assault on the senses forged from dusty old drum machines, occasional blasts of distant melody, and all manner of mind-altering special effects. It's pretty much what you'd expect from Moss, and for the most part sits in the folder marked "box jams". There are standouts, of course - see the delicious "Track 5" and intense acid workout "Track 7" - but for the most part Moss offers killer variations on a theme.

The Doctrines Of Swedenborg (7:46)
Calling The Loas (4:55)
Dimensions Of Frequency & Vibrations (8:06)
Ashrams (4:19)
Review: Last year, Jamal Moss in conjunction with percussionist and producer Sarathy Korwar (Ninja Tune/The Steve Reid Foundation) and the highly respected British saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings recorded a live and improvised session at the iconic Lightship95 studio, moored at Trinity Buoy Wharf, London. Two and a half hours of music was recorded across two sessions, with 90 minutes streamed live via NTS Radio. Technicolour now present a 12" EP comprising of four edits from these sessions titled 'Association For Research & Enlightenment Project'. The deep analogue tribalism of "The Doctrines Of Swedenborg" is truly magical and is geared for some real tunnelling effects. The lush ambience of "Dimensions Of Frequency & Vibrations" on the flip was a highlight too, awash in celestial synths and evocative saxophone solos, accompanied by Korwar's drumming reaching near tribal moments.

Review: Over the last few years, the team behind the Moog Sound Lab has encouraged a range of forward-thinking electronic musicians to come and jam on its obscure (and very rare) Modular 55 System prototype. The latest edition in the ongoing series of session recordings sees intergalactic Afro-futurist Hieroglyphic Being treat us to The Replicant Dream Sequence - an eight-part modular electronic treat that moves from drowsy, surprisingly colourful ambience ("Seq 1") and foreboding deep space soundscapes ("Seq 3"), to dreamy electronica ("Seq 4") and hypnotic EBM (standout "Seq 6", which also features his distinctive spoken vocals), via blistering techno ("Seq 8", "Seq 2"). Unlike many of his own releases, the sound is sparkling and crystal clear, allowing the quality of his compositions and arrangements to shine through.

Review: For the first time since 2016, Jamal Moss has pitched up on Soul Jazz with a typically eccentric and mind-altering full-length excursion. As you'd expect, The Red Room is another triumph - an inspirational collection of otherworldly and melodious cuts that effortlessly combine elements from Moss's many major inspirations. One minute, you're wigging out to his jacking, piano-heavy fusion of gospel house and synth-jazz ("The Seduction Syndrome"), the next he's laying down a chunk of deep space ambient with Terry Riley synthesizer cycles ("Awake and Energize"). And so it goes on, breathlessly joining the dots between Sun Ra, Juan Atkins, Adonis, Steve Reich, L.I.E.S and Jeff Mills while sounding thoroughly different to all of them.

The Fourth Dimension
Start Time
Review: Overseen by London producer PhOtOmachine (with some assistance from Ninja Tune) the Technicolour label has been on sublime form of late, with some rare Kutmah material up their with this year's best 12" releases. This latest release is quite the statement too, with mathematics boss Jamal Moss on board for two heavy duty cuts presented on heavyweight wax. It's timed well too, with Planet Mu having just issued a Hieroglyphic Being primer drawing from a decades worth of material. Fans of Hieroglyphic Being old and new will find much to appreciate in The Fourth Dimensions Of A Nubian Mystic, with the glistening 11 minute cosmos of "Fourth Dimension" complemented well by the jack hammer B Side "Start Time."

Review: Most recently responsible for the Dopplereffekt-featuring Die Reisen 12" from Visonia, the Last Known Trajectory label adds another certified legend to their line up in the shape of Jamal Moss. Featuring two productions under his widely-known Hieroglyphic Being alias, Acid Rain Under The Stars sees a title track taking the form of a psychedelic 303 jam which indulges his more mystical qualities, while "Free The Energy" lives up to its name, a stomping piece of crushing acid techno only he could have made.

How Wet Is Your Box
Siddhartha (part 1)
Long Live The Flesh
The Human Experience
Review: Anyone with a firm grip of Jamal Moss's output in recent years will fully understand that the Mathematics boss reserves his most twisted and messed up productions for the rarely used +++ label, but you still need to approach this latest edition with caution as the A Side is mangled audio in the supreme. Originally founded as an outlet for HG material recorded during the 90s and rediscovered from the archives of his Galaxy Studios, it's hard to say where +++ is at now, other than in a place all on its own. It's a challenge in itself to sit through opening track "How Wet Is Your Box" which is more akin to hearing a neighbour rotate through the FM airwaves. "Siddhartha (part 1)" is just as obtuse, sounding very much like its been dredged up from some dust caked tape and pressed direct to vinyl, though at least there's some semblance of a saturated beat to hang onto. "Long Live The Flesh" is quite brilliant, one long loop of jack hammering disco replete with barely audible screams of joy that seems like it could go on for infinity. Proceedings end with the title track "The Human Experience" a production that exemplifies perfectly Moss's unchallenged art of mastering the sonically deranged.

The Lost Transmissions
Cosmic Bebop
Review:  The Lost Transmissions marks a second dosage of Hieroglyphic Being wrongness on Rabih Beaini's Morphine Records label, arriving some months after the Mathematics boss' bewildering take on Madteo's "Freak Inspector" as part of the Redose-1 release. It's the first full Jamal Moss Doser release in some years however and finds the Chicago native in typically uncompromising form, opening with a reworked version of the title track which originally surfaced on one of those limited Mathematics CDrs in 2010. Markedly slower and cut down in length slightly, this new version still frazzles brains all the harder, trudging slowly towards sonic oblivion and adopting a harsher and increasingly more schizophrenic approach as it progresses. It still doesn't prepare you for the mangled thump of B Side track "Cosmic Bebop" which is best described as the music you might expect gleefully emanating from a grinding carousel ride on a fairground pitched up deep into Dante's Hell.

Review: Jamal Moss steps up to the Alter stable with some of his masterful Chicago-via-outer-space house music, kicking off with the subtle rise and fall of the title track which works off a dizzying array of interlocking melodies to create a truly intergalactic synthesiser journey. "The Man With The Red Rhythm" is a more jagged affair, maximizing on cowbell hits and a delirious clashing of harmonies between organ notes, rubbery bass swells, and all manner of sonic mess flung at the canvas and falling into a mad jack all by itself. "The Ischiadic Nerve" deals more in a grotty, industrial sound palette wielded to a tough techno purpose. The drum pattern is unforgiving, the synths drifting like aimless wraiths, the intensity never letting up. It's exactly what you went when signing up for the Jamal Moss experience.

A Plutonian Love Affair (9th Planet remix)
Tache Floue De L'amour De Folie Interminable
Review: If you need any proof that Jamal Moss is currently at his busiest then check this weeks release schedules and you'll find this is the third 12" blessed with the unique touch of the Mathematics boss man. This record for the fledgling Norwegian label Modelhart features cuts from the slightly daunting Moss archives under his universally recognisable alias Hieroglyphic Being; the A Side sees the uncredited 9th Planet (another Moss alias?) tackle "A Plutonian Love Affair" which originally featured on 2010's The Sun Man Speaks, one of the countless CDrs Moss releases with little prior notice. 9th Planet's rework extends the track and the fractured, warbling chimes and organs shimmer with a beautiful sense of incandescence. "Tache Floue De L'Amour Folie Interminable" occupies the B Side, lifted from Moss's Welcome 2 The Beating Hearts Social Club CDr of last year and leaves a haunted feeling on the listener with thrusting percussion reminiscent of Squarepusher's "Red Hot Car" swamped in a land of static.
