Banded
Review: Ilian Tapes meets The Trilogy Tapes! Munich-based DJ and producer Dario Zenker aligns with Will Bankhead's unassailable label for a quartet of aces housed in the most distinctive of record sleeves. Alongside his brother Marco, Dario Zenker has stealthily built Ilian Tape into one of our favourite techno outlets thanks to their focus on artists and productions that never slump into tracky functionality. This sense of personality is very much evident across the four tracks on Morsin; take for example the A Side where the murky rolling techno of the title track is complemented by the exercise in building breakbeat pressure that is "W3". There's a wonderful freneticism to "WM2" where a strident bass drum thud is attacked by a dizzying array of zigzagging rhythms, whilst "Banded" ends proceedings in resolutely abstract territory.

Untamed
Review: The Trilogy Tapes continue to slay all in their path, with TTT015 featuring four slabs of suffocating sonics from Oliver Vereker. The pair of records for LIES last year ensured Oliver graduated from Professor Morelli's class of 2013 with honours, whilst the young San Francisco-based producer was also spotted duking it out with Florian Kupfer on one of those blink-and-you-missed-it Russian Torrent Versions platters. If you picked up on one of those records you will know what to expect from Slain, which begins in particularly crepuscular form with the title track, as the ghostly remains of Detroit electro are dragged straight to hell. This sense of claustrophobia remains throughout, with pressure seemingly exerted on each lurching drum beat - the woozy box jam "Marked" is the one exception and our personal highlight.

Leg Man
Review: Will Bankhead's Trilogy Tapes imprint continues their assault on 2012 with the latest release of Tuff Sherm - an alias of TTT regular Dro Carey. Sitting nicely alongside the KM/MM and Willie Burns releases on TTT this year, the Pharmacy EP showcases a sound that is part raw techno, part submerged house; the title track combines rolling tom-heavy percussion with abrasive unprocessed synth tones, like Drexciya jamming with Kassem Mosse. On the flip, "Hydlide" makes things even murkier, with some abstract beatdown house that would give Madteo a run for his money, while "Leg Man" is another trip down the wormhole of abstract loops and minimal clockwork rhythms. We probably don't need to tell you, but this is another essential 12" from TTT!

Review: The Trilogy Tapes label signal the start of a potentially devastating series of releases with the Burglar Loops EP from Tuff Sherm, the slightly less leaned on production alias of Eugene Hector, the tireless Australian producer known to most as Dro Carey. Hector's appeared on Will Bankhead's label under both aliases previously, most recently under the Tuff Sherm banner with the Pharmacy EP, whose understated take on house music has shades of Kassem Mosse's monochromatic productions. Hector is seemingly in a much rowdier mood here as the opening track "Cleric" demonstrates, seemingly culling influences from the last decade of niche house movements and cramming them in the spaces between a booming kick drum. Elsewhere, the title track sees Sherm opt for the abstract approach with a vocal sample that lends the production a certain degree of ghetto roughness that doesn't detract from it's overall affecting nature. With 12"s from _moonraker, DJ Spider & Marshalitto and obscure Youtube presence Rezettstill to come it feels like 2013 is going to be The Trilogy Tapes finest year thus far.

Review: Given the respective recent outputs of Low Jack and D.K, you'd expect this first collaborative missive under the Slack DJ's alias to be rather good. It is, of course, though it's probably the most experimental release either producer has been involved with. Opener "Hoops" sets the tone, offering a befuddled trip through chopped-up, constantly changing leftfield techno territory - all beaten-up rhythms, dubbed-out electronics and odd noises. There's a slightly more dreamy feel to "75011", though it still sounds like it was recorded in a cement mixer full to the brim with sand and gravel. Flip for two takes on "Glasshouse Mountain", where D.K's gorgeous synthesizers are put through the ringer in the company of edgy, otherworldly rhythms and end-of-days effects.

Review: The forty -fourth release on Will Bankhead's highly lauded The Trilogy Tapes comes from Born Free co-founder Samo DJ, previously responsible for a fine cassette mix for the label as well as that Four Legs 12" with Skudge's Elias Landberg. Given the Swede's eclectic approach, it's perhaps unsurprising that Kicked Out of Everywhere is a pleasingly mixed-up affair. Opener "Bleeps" drags the fuzzy, sparse and bass-heavy sound of Early British techno kicking and screaming into the industrial techno age (admittedly via the broken beats of West London), while "LKF" is simultaneously dreamy, trippy and rhythmically intense. Some may hear the influence of early Belgian techno in the slippery throb of "Medellin", while the weird, spaced-out "Downer" sounds like hazy jazz after several shoe boxes full of Ketamine. Samo DJ for President!

Review: It was only a matter of time before the enigmatic Rezzett duo dropped an LP on Will Bankhead's TTT, and the time feels just right. At a time when electro, EBM and post-everything seems to be trending, the duo's organic style and ethereal melodies make a whole lot of sense, and give meaning to a new generation of listeners fascinated by future dystopia and the more melancholic side of dance music. The self-titled LP is a perfect encapsulation of everything they have released thus far, a blend of aqueous techno and ambient house that goes way, way beyond the dancefloor. The mood, the vibe, and the sounds are sticky, tainting the air with their singular distortion aesthetic that renders them personal to these two masked producers. The thing we love most, however, is their willingness to represent the UK hardcore continuum, offering two final cuts that push the d&b framework to its very limits. Highly recommended.

Review: Following the announcement that they've collaborated with perma-masked Zomby on his upcoming LP for Hyperdub, behooded hardware manglers Rezzett return to home soil for their latest, and perhaps best so far, 12" for The Trilogy Tapes. With a very defined, redlining approach to techno and hardcore tropes established across their prior output on Will Bankhead's label, the duo demonstrate there is still plenty of scope for invention on Doyce. In essence you get two versions of the same track either side of this 12"; the A-side is nominally the club cut though there is a feeling of restraint where usually Rezzett deal in speaker bursting madness. The "Yavas" version on the flip is quite something else however, discarding with any rhythmic elements over an eleven-minute journey into mind-bending sonics based around that quite exquisite mangled synth line.

Review: Publicity-shy duo Rezzett have latterly become heavily associated with The Trilogy Tapes, delivering two superb 12" singles and a live cassette for Will Bankhead's acclaimed imprint. Goodness, their third EP, continues where its' predecessors left off, packing some distorted, blurry analogue jams blessed with popping percussion and creeping beauty. This is particularly true of the title track, which contrasts hissing cymbals and muddy beats with dreamy chords and world-weary melodies. There's a tougher bump to the similarly gritty "Twizzta", while "Boiling D's" offers a quick blast of ghostly synthesizers and bustling drum machine rhythms.

Review: Will Bankhead's curatorial role at the head of The Trilogy Tapes strikes gold once more with the Firebomb EP from Rezzett. Even the most accomplished search engine detectives out there tend to come up short when it's down to attempting to uncover who is behind the Rezzett material. Aside from a YouTube channel populated by videos of gauzy electronics, a recently established Facebook artist page and plenty of online speculation, there's little tangible information out there on Rezzett. Regardless of his/her/their identity, Rezzett clearly know their way around explosive, synapse blowing techno with "Yayla" a stand out moment; despite it being nine minutes of crushing machine made music, it still ranks of one of the most beautiful things to appear on The Trilogy Tapes since it's foundation.

Review: Rezzett are arguably one of The Trilogy Tapes' "go-to" acts. The London duo has previously released a trio of impressive, off-kilter EPs of fuzzy house and techno jams for Will Bankhead's much-loved imprint. Happily, Zik Zak is every bit as essential as their previous material, expertly blurring the boundaries between techno, experimental electronics, and distorted hardcore. While the drowsy-but-sweaty "Hey Hugo" - all sampled vocal yelps, sweeping chords and clattering percussion - is probably the most obviously ear-catching of the four cuts, there's plenty to get excited about elsewhere. Check, for example, the intricate electronics and eyes-closed loveliness of the title track, and the fluid melodiousness of opener "Afyon" - or, for that matter, the comforting bliss of EP closer "Noklue".

Review: Qoso is a Paris-based producer who has previously released on In Paradisum and collaborated with Low Jack. The latter reference should give you a hint as what to expect from "Morning Routine", a four-track missive of experimental electronica and mutant techno that tends towards the fuzzy, clanking and otherworldly. There's much to enjoy, from the spaced-out Autechre-in-dub flex of "Sweatpants" and the quirky combination of twittering synth lines, post-electro beats and rumbling bass that is "Tabi Shoes", to the fizzing electronics and galloping machine beats of closing cut "Exfolio". Spacey, acid-fired opener "Cock-A-Doodle-Do", where military machine drum snares, foreboding bass and subtle acid lines catch the ear, is also pretty darn good.

Review: Fresh from a superb outing on Wisdom Teeth (the wonderfully deep and meditative Terrapin EP), Dwayne Parris-Robinson returns to The Trilogy Tapes for the first time in three years. A-side 'Harajuku Girls' boasts just the right blend of melodic accessibility, dancefloor weight and rhythmic ingenuity, with the Bristol-based producer wrapping a jumpy, UK-funky influenced beat in rumbling bass, fluttering synthesizer motifs and cut-up vocal snippets. He gets dreamier on side B, first combining crunchy, post D&B-beats with seductive ambient chords and chiming melodies on 'Yurei', before brilliantly combining barking dogs, twinkling electronics, hazy chords and dubbed-out breakbeat hardcore beats on the equally as impressive 'Aqua Surge'.

Review: Besides a cameo role on Optimo late last year, little is known about Odd Lust beyond the fact that they make some rather fascinating (and handsomely dark) techno. Take 'Planet Is Transparent', a 150 BPM broken drum electro homage that sits closer to drum & bass than it does trad techno. It's backed by the slower, more curmudgeonly electro of the title track before 'Vocation' closes with a tight weave of acid slappage. Odd by name, mesmerising by nature.

Review: Dat boy u know as Anthony Naples adds The Trilogy Tapes to his growing impressive discography with the superb El Portal EP. It only seems like last week Naples appeared out of nowhere with the modern classic Mad Disrespect EP for Mr Saturday Night and since then his rise has been meteoric, remixing Four Tet, gracing Opal Tapes, founding his own Proibito label and dropping another slayer for Mr Harkin and Mr Carter. Adding Will Bankhead's supreme TTT operation to his arsenal is a true statement and this is impressive stuff; doling out raw abstract deep house that threatens to swell over on the title track, while "Pueblo" provides a rough downtempo rhythm whose scrappy hi-hats come laden with funk and a jazzy piano refrain. On the flip, "Busy Signal" provides house track whose sweet chords are counterbalanced by a particularly driving rhythm. Watch out for the Fleetwood Mac drop too!

Interestingly, it sees him move away from the dusty, off-kilter sound that he's most famous for, towards something altogether cleaner and more melodious. A-side "Lekker" is astonishingly positive, with sparkling electronic lead lines, starry synth solos, and electro polyrhythms all catching the ear. Epic flipside "Momentos Magicos" is almost as unashamedly loved-up. It's a four-to-the-floor roller, propelled forwards by a combination of darting, electrofunk style synth bass, cascading electronics, and cheery melody lines. Like the A-side, it feels pleasingly timeless.

Review: The boy Naples hooks up with Bankhead again for what looks and sounds like a sequel to last year's much loved El Portal 12" for The Trilogy Tapes. Apparently named in honour of the hospitable reception young Anthony received whilst playing a party in the Columbian town of Zipacon, this four track release opens with "Perron" which sounds like previous Naples hit "Busy Signal" hollowed out. From here, "Zipacon" feels like a real high point with fizzing, intricate drum patterns and a warbling pad line that really captivates. Flipside cut "More Problem" offers a undeniably booming interlude before Naples gets really bugged out on the excellent "Crazy Spirit".

"Snow Ball" and "Smart Ball", on the A-side, are two sides of the same coin; the former bleeps placidly to an eerie groove of molecular hypnotics, while the latter enters the rave with a slow yet brutalist assortment of bass bumps. Their highly experimental brand of techno is the kind of thing designed to warp minds and confuse limbs on the dancefloor, with the bitcrushed syncopations of "Oronimbus" offering the most floor-friendly cut here. "Plot Query" sends things even further into space with its 145bpm pace offset by a starry field of sound drifting by. Thanks to Will Bankhead's impeccable A&R skills, the showcased material is also some of Lindner's best in years, too. Check first opener "Clear Drive", where melancholic, alien-sounding sustained chords, pulsing sub bass and razor-sharp TB-303 bass stabs cluster around a deliriously snappy drum machine groove. Though closely associated with the Workshop man, Mix Mup has really developed his own style over the course of the past decade of releases and Skip Intro might be his best work yet. His is a subtle touch; see the manner in which Mix Mup teases an Asian melodic refrain out of nowhere to dominate the title track. Both "Sequoflec" and "IE" are the kind of drum tracks you'll hear Ben UFO slip into a set and wonder for ages what they are, whilst the midi sax on "Curtain Scene" makes it sound like a hollowed out remix of Pender Street Steppers jam "Love Theme (Angelo)".

Review: ANOTHER SLAB OF TTT HEAT! Known to the online dance community for his journalistic endeavours, Angus Finlayson crosses the critical divide with aplomb on this debut transmission under the Minor Science guise. Sitting in the uncomfortable yet intriguing crawlspace between Madteo and Actress, it's quite easy to see why Will Bankhead would be drawn to these five tracks. Opening with the brief fractured vignette "Lightfastness" which sounds like a FM dial being shunted through the sonic mists, the Minor Science sound then draws on four more rounded productions that offer compelling variety. The cooing stutter of "Silence" emits a succession of thick gaseous clouds of textural incandescence that are quite intoxicating, whilst the skeletal timbral patter of "Hapless" hides a vocal that's buried so far deep into the mix you'll keep pulling the needle back and messing with your bass EQ in order to try and decipher it. "The Beckoner" is woozy techno that manages to rein in the melodic chaos that always seems on the cusp of breaking out, whilst "Foggy Situation" is quite beautiful in it's abstract construction.

The man otherwise known as Manuel Gonzales has already impressed us in 2012 with 12?s for Wild Oats and Don't Be Afraid, The Near Future EP is possibly our favourite release from the producer yet. Those expecting the kind of raw Detroit techno he's become known for will be all over tracks like the deep mid-tempo cosmics of "2?, the rippling percussion and growling bassline of "The Race" and the tracky Millsian jack of "Tiles", but the real surprises come in the form of "Walk With Me", an edit of what sounds like some dusty 60s psychedelia, and "Flutter's Brother", a track which sounds like a knackered, decayed old Green Velvet demo.

Review: After a fine 2014 that saw a quite unique LP for LIES and the launch of his own Editions Gravats label, Parisian Low Jack brings some Gallic experimentalism to Will Bankhead's ever excellent TTT cause in the shape of Imaginary Boogie. Those fiending for some material to mess up the dance will gravitate immediately to the title track, which is a fuzzed out little number in a similar vein to Terekke's best work. Complementing this, Low Jack is given the space to fully indulge his more esoteric urges on five tracks that veer through the realm of sonic abstraction, landing on moments that could soundtrack horror films as well as short excercises in noise reminiscent of Haswell.

Take My Heart
Review: With the Juno research minions still none the wiser as to the true identity of Rezzett, Will Bankhead unveils another absolute mind killer from origin unknown in the shape of the Believe EP by Levantis. Don't look hopefully at that search engine son cos it won't help you here, instead bask in perhaps the best TTT transmission of the year. Opening track "Music Hall" feels less like a musical arrangement and more like a living breathing entity for the first few minutes then suddenly it finds a wonderfully rewarding house beat buried deep beneath the claustrophobic murk and that's it, you are hooked. It's positively cheery in comparison to "Pieces" which sounds like the sonic equivalent of being dragged to hell, whilst those seeking respite will find solace in "Take My Heart". Here mangled textures that feel like they're slowly enveloping themselves and some insistent rhythms built from recycled drums combine in a manner that has you slipping the needle back to that 1 mm gap midway through the vinyl to bask in it all once more.

Space Planar (14:16)
Review: Next up on TTT is New York city-based DJ/producer Kiki Kudo with her fourth release which follows up some great ones on local label Incienso, as well as Good Morning Tapes and Zero Balance. There's two terrific tracks featured on both sides of the Profile Eterna 12". On the first side we have the dreamy polyrhythmic bliss of "Plotlined" which would be perfect to play as the early morning lights creep in through the blinds, while B side cut "Space Planar" is equally hypnotic, but this one's really off-kilter - and still worthy of playing at the after party too.

...And Then Leave (Brian Kage mix) (7:47)
Review: Here is the long awaited third release from John FM. He is a 24 year old rising star from Detroit who follows up two well received EP's on Omar S' esteemed FXHE records - with yet more dusty machine funk for The Trilogy Tapes. He's found a fitting home on TTT, you can really hear it on the A side epic "Ricochet" as it pumps away beneath the lo-fi tape saturation, all hypnotic arpeggios and rusty drum patterns galore. On the flip, it's a classic Motor City affair from the first wave on the rather Derrick May sounding "..And Then Leave" which is in fact remixed by local legend Brian Kage of Michigander and Reference fame. It's a great one packed full of emotive church organs, razor sharp synth melodies and evocative pads. Follows up a great release on the label in the from of Omar S' collaboration with Los Angeles based songstress Nite Jewel on the wonderful "Confess To U".

Review: Geo Rip is the trio of Aaron Leitko, John Calvin Jones and Mike Petillo who made their debut four years ago with a cassette release on U-Udios out of Takoma Park, MD (USA). Their eponymously titled sophomore effort here on The Trilogy Tapes features four experimental cuts, all said to be improvised live-to-tape. From the wonky electronics and splintered beats of opening track "Drop In Center" leading into the off-kilter deepness of "Nah Press Fake Text", their sound then diverts into more electro (-ish) sounding territory on woozy B2 track "Underwater Bodycam".

Review: Berlin-based British producer Joe Seaton dons the Onno Fudd alias once again, following up a couple of releases on Will Bankhead's The Trilogy Tapes label - namely 2016's terrific Blue Dot EP. Five deep and meditative cuts that merge classic house/techno flavours with IDM and ambient aesthetics - all with a modern experimental twist. We are loving the floaty and entrancing drifter that is the title track, the driving EBM style arpeggio that is central to the epic groove of "Joyride To My Inside" and the hypnotic heads down bounce of "Earth Queen Voice". On the flip, he even dons his more popular Call Super alias for the Rhythim Is Rhythim-ish vibe of "The Mess".

Review: Call Super last used the Ondo Fudd alias back in 2014, serving up a much-loved EP on The Trilogy Tapes. Here he dons the alias once more, returning to Will Bankhead's imprint to explore more humid, tropical influenced pastures. He begins with "Blue Dot", a delightfully evocative fusion of drifting jazz horns, ambient chords and occasional rainforest percussion. He ratchets up the intensity a little on "The Fludd", where undulating electronic percussion hits, tropical textures and snaking saxophone lines spar drowsily. Finally, "Veto Plank" sees him back on house territory, overlaying a sturdy rhythm with fevered noises and sticky electronics

Review: Four Legs are better than two! Born Free man Samo 'DJ' Forsberg continues his assault on 2016 with this killer TTT 12" as Four Legs alongside Skudge overlord Elias Landberg. The pair have already issued a 12" together under the Split Image name for Swedish label New Dimensions (which you should totally check out) and this Four Legs stuff finds Forsberg and Landberg partaking in some no-nonsense, heads down machine funk. That's the flavour for opening cut "Aguirre" whilst title track "Clarky Cat" (Chris Morris reference anyone?) finds the Swedish duo veering off into deeper, psychedelic territory. "Shark" is as marauding as the sea creature it takes its name from, whilst "Clearwater Bay" ends on a more serene note.
