Cat: EM 003. Rel: 06 Feb 20

Electro
122 BPM (4:22)
130 BPM (4:02)
Review: Electric Mojo is on a mission to delve into the history of electronic music and serve up some of its best moments. This new one is just that - a classic b-boy DJ tool that's linked to the first wave of breakdancing, and will likely turn all who hear it into aspiring body-poppers. First up, "122BPM" is a crisp future-retro electro tune with bubbling leads and warm, smeared chords that oozes essential feels. "130BPM" has wobbly toms and crashing hits that make for perfect body music. In the right hands, these tasteful tunes will easily become weapons of mass dance floor destruction.

Black Humour (3:44)
Limbo Line (3:07)
Review: Mauopa Mazzochetti makes crusty, lo-fi analogue techno in the vein of Container and has seen him release previously on Unknown Precept and now he's inaugurating promising Belgian imprint PRR! PRR! On the first side of this techno 7", the modular sensibilities of "O Horror Na" warble away in a guttural fashion backed up by thumping tom drums. "Mona" meanwhile is more uptempo with its overdriven kick drum tearing through the speaker while accompanying woodblocks and loop on aggressively. "Black Humor" on the B side is another slobbering affair with a dark reverberated melody flatting on top of a sick acidic baseline and rusty analogue drum patterns. Finally "Limbo Line" goes out all guns blazing in a hardened minimal synth style; bleeping, zapping and hissing all over the shop.

Track 1 (5:34)

Track 3 (2:44)
Review: For their seventh release, Parisian techno mavericks Collapsing Market have turned to Pavel Milyakov's Buttechno project. It marks the producer's first outing on a label other than his own, and contains A trio of contrasting tracks. The untitled A-side is something of a dark and spooky throb-fest, with moody stabs, foreboding pads and creeping acid lines enveloping a booming rhythm. On the flip's "Track 2", he wanders further towards the broken, bass music-influenced heaviness of Livity Sound, whilst showcasing a surprising devotion to melody. The EP closes with a dose of warm, hazy and notably foggy dub disco.

Crystal Doves (4:44)
Review: Cheesy electro goodness from Canadian edit and remix machine Nick Bike, here indulging the humorous moniker Nicholas Bicicletta for the second of two 7" Kon editions. '808 Doves' comes through with glitzing hits, filter-freqqed lasershots, synth claves, and arpy sixteenths, all chalking up a downtown New York circa 1987 vibe. The free-as-a-bird theme is kept up with 'Crystal Doves', which concocts a sonic landscape picture of cathartic vocal gurgles and subby progressions, all against an epic collage made up of Crystal-Watery recognisance.

Mighty Baron III - "Screwe'd" (3:34)
Sun Runners - "The Finest" (4:14)
Review: The latest audio missive from Funkineven's Apron camp has been receiving a lot of heat, and it's easy to see why. In typical style, both tracks take classic boogie and '80s soul jams, impressively mangling them in distinctly different ways. Mighty Baron III's "Screwed" is a "chopped and screwed" masterpiece - a fusion of sludgy, slowed-down electrfunk loops, pitched-down vocals and wonky beatbox rhythms. It's distinctively odd, but really rather special. Flip for the Sun Runners' "The Finest", a smart and melodious S.O.S Band re-edit that's been pepped up with additional drum machine hits and special effects. It will do the business on both boogie and R&B dancefloors.

Family 83 (4:35)
Korma (5:19)
Review: Greek label Acid Cuts continues to serve up its unique 8" offerings with lashings of great acid sounds on each one. This 18th helping comes from Acidaloius and opens with 'Family 83', a meandering acid line weaves in and out of jacked up, early Chicago house drums. It's dark and direct but has plenty of mystery in the distant synth work. The highlight of this particular package though is the flipside 'Korma' with its pinging kicks and clipped sense of techno funk. It is again run through with a soft acid line and makes for a nice fresh take on the sound.

Quickstart Guide (6:42)
The Test Case Monologue (5:32)
Review: Well, we have to admit this is first time we've ever been made aware that music can be pressed onto 8" vinyl. It is the permanent MO of the Greece-based Acid Cuts label and this latest mid-sized slice of goodness comes from Hannibal Peck. 'Quickstart Guide' is a perfect acid track with bright, prickly 303 lines weaving their way in and out of hefty drums and splashy cymbals. It's a mind melter for sure. 'The Test Case Monologue' then gets more gritty, with snap electro drums and bumping bass making you jack.

Review: Raving romancers Schlachthofbronx creep out of their Munich hidey hole with two system wallopers for Zam Zam Sounds. Taking off where 'Dun Dem' left us in 2018, there's a real industrial weight to 'Akkord' as a bulging bassline, steel foundry clangs and a rainbow of risers lead us into the big skank payoff. 'Shell' on the flip is a grumpier affair; classic heavily reverbed drums, a manic siren and rim shots galore, this won't so much as turn heads but twist them right off.

Gallium (5:43)
Iron Ferrum (5:42)
Review: When launching Jeff Thompson and co-producer Eqwel's Amalgamated Metals series of seven-inch singles earlier in the year, Sacred Rhythm chief Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell warned that a number of releases would be needed to, in his words, "harden the strongest solder possible to resist the corrosive nature of tasteless dance music". Release number two is certainly sturdily soldered, with A-side 'Gallium' delivering a forthright blend of galloping, metallic drum hits, hissing cymbals and spooky, otherworldly synth sounds. 'Iron Ferrum' is strikingly different, with distant-sounding metallic noises disappearing underneath a thick, beat-free coat of bubbly acid lines and immersive ambient chords.

An Die Freude (5:20)
Pass In Light (5:00)
Review: Hoga Nord certainly ranks up their with Sweden's most imaginative and enjoyable electronic music labels, with Hanna Ostergen's Laughing Eye project exemplary of what we mean. The percussionist and drummer (known for her part in Hanna & Axel, Hills and Traden) manages to deliver two tracks that are extremely dance floor friendly but quite unlike most of the dance floor friendly stuff you'll come across today. Or tomorrow. Irrespective of genre.

Opening on the warm, atmospheric and low slung 'An Die Freude', there's a stripped Hivern Discs feel about things, somehow nodding to progressive, tech, and disco all at the same time, before the musicality reveals itself by way of wistful woodwind melodies. These are carried through to the second tune, 'Pass In Light', which ups the weirdness via a strange alt-four-four rhythm that feels like you're grooving through the world of Mr Soft, only with added mystery from those folk-ish harmonies.

Ark Welders Dub (4:01)
This Bitter Dub (4:08)
Review: Techno doesn't often come on 7" but do not let that put you off this superb new drop from Bump'n'Grind. It features dub techno legend Deadbeat in fine form across two devastating cuts. A-side 'Ark Welders Dub' is a menacing and prowling track with a picked bassline and smeared chords to add real depth and weight. It's one to foster a heads down mood on the dancefloor, while emotional release comes in the form of the flip side. 'This Bitter Dub' is a more sparse sounds with hissing hi-hats skating over the drums while bittersweet synths and an aching blues vocal ring out up top.

Review: B+'s B-Beat Classic is originally from 1983. It is an early hip-hop and electronic fusion with some great talk-box vocals and a loose-limbed mix of percussion and drums. It moves slowly and purposefully, with scratches over the top and unhinged funk soon permeating your body. Leftover tape was used to create the effects and original copies have a note that the tune was dedicated to a first generation Boston disco DJ named Jim Stuard whose career was cut short by the Everard Baths fire in New York City in 1977.
