Review: ZKY who minimal fans will know as one half of Cab Drivers now finds himself on fine French label Phonogramme with a new EP that offers up his lovely and warm analogue house jams. 'Love Train' kicks off with a nagging, wobbly baseline between silvery drum loops and fleshy bass. 'Instant Delight' has the sort of synths that bring to mind deep Detroit techno and they're paired with over sized hi hats and a serene sense of futurism. Last of all is the most playful - 'Punky Music' with James Brown samples, smeared chords and steamy vocals.

Review: The cultured La Bella Di Notte label out of Italy has already won our hearts with an array of fine reissues and here comes another one to start off 2024 right. Zero Origin's 'New Life' came in 1996 and is the work of Nathanael Heres, who dropped only a handful of EPs between 1994 and 1996. This one, like most of them, is much sought after and fairly pricey if you can find it. It is a raw exploration of stripped back house, techno and dub with well swung drums with an original, Se Da remix and more breakbeat driven Planet Earth mix.

Flip over and take on more of the frozen seascape on the deeply hypnotic groove of "Empty" before one more emotional ambient outro in the form of 'Endgame'.

Review: YTP, Raw Takes, Ole Mic Odd & Alonzo, and Chupacabras are all back once again for some more authentic sounds from the underground. These more than able producers land on a hand-stamped translucent green wax 12" that marks the second installment in the Source Material Various Artist series. Just like the first, this is a monster outing with four searing electro cuts that bring intergalactic warfare to any party. '116ctro' is a visceral cut with corrugated rhythms and zippy synths. 'And We Rock' has a funky broken beat and tons of reverb and 'Compassion' slows it down a touch but has lashing synths and thunderous kicks to keep you moving.

Review: Wanderwelle & Bandhagens Musikforening's masterful Victory Over The Sun album gets skilfully reinterpreted by some of techno's most forward thinking protagonists. Amsterdam pair Wanderwelle themselves go first with a misty ambient take of 'An Unusual Sunrise' that sets a perfectly dramatic scene. Label boss Sverca serves up one of the highlights with his deep, pulsing hypnotic version of the title track and Anthony Linell sinks us way down below the ocean surface on his meditative dub roller. Review: Orlando Voorn has always been a vital link between the US and European techno scenes but he is just as adept at cooking up fresh electro sounds. It is that headspace that he is in here with this typically deep three-track offering on the Partout label. It is a journeying selection from the off as 'OV Chatterbox' layers up the heavy drums with squealing leads and prickly acid. 'Know The Ledge' is an off-grid jumble of bleeping electronics and crunchy rhythms then 'Baby' spins out on filtered loops and jungle sound effects that manage to sound summary and bright while also making for a physical groove.

Their eleventh release is by hometown hero Craig McWhinney aka Vohkinne, who presents three excursions into the more hypnotic fringes of techno on the Set Theory EP. 'Infinite Space' is a tunnelling and mental strain of the genre which will appeal to fans of Mike Parker or Ness, receiving a pummelling rework by Berlin's Denise Rabe up next who takes the track into deep space territory. Review: Voal is Shoal and Vand and is already a stamp of quality off this one EP alone if you like your techno deep. 'Carpet Crawler' is a great name for a track that is all about bendy bass and warped, low lying synth lines that creep like snakes thorough the undergrowth. 'Luficer' then has a more hiccupping deep tech rhythm that is embellished with spooky and watery sound effects. 'Saffron' is another mind melting trip through bendy techno brilliance and last of all, 'Take My Hand' slows things down and strips things back to more expert atmospherics.

Review: If you ever wondered where the line between techno and hard dance lies these days, let Viper Diva be your guide. The collaborative project from Shlomo and Hadone is a boisterous barrel of fist-pumping fun with plenty of hard trance motifs filtered through that evil techno veneer. As 'Broken Dreams Club' explicitly "welcomes you to the gates of hell", you might well be reminded of the sound you'd as likely hear at an early 00s Tidy Weekender, but that's absolutely fine with us. '24/7 You' has a slightly more melodic tint, although still shot through with certain gothic malaise, while 'Love & Riot' brings some poppy vocal slithers into the mix to up the emotional factor without dialling back the punishing rhythm section.

Review: Levon Vincent continues to serve up high-grade techno workouts on his own Novel Sound imprint, with releases appearing with little or no fanfare or fuss. Concrete Jungle, his latest two-tracker, is deliciously raw, fuzzy, weighty and sleazy, with Vincent's choise of sounds and arrangements conjuring mental images of late-night walks through high-rise housing projects. A-side 'Track 1' sees him build up a dense, sub-heavy, cymbal-rich techno groove featuring subtle nods to British bleep techno, onto which he then adds shimmering, life-affirming pads. 'Track 2' flips the script a little, with Vincent wrapping a dubby techno groove in metallic motifs, concrete-clad electronics and spaced-out effects. He rarely pits a foot wrong, but even by Vincent's high standards both tracks are excellent.

Review: Levon Vincent's particular brand of techno is so percussive, club-ready and mind-altering that very few realise how sonically experimental it is. In a bid to make us more aware of this, the information sent to shops and press about 'Niresa', his latest single, features the popular producer discussing his love of creating a 'unique tonal dialog'. He also frames the two-track missive as 'music for astral planing' [sic]. The untitled A-side is certainly intergalactic, with sparkling, deep space melodies weaving in and out of a crunchy, drum machine-driven techno rhythm. Over on the flip, he goes further, offering a more pared-back beat, insatiably exotic and hallucinatory electronic motifs, bubbly synth stabs and waves of psychedelic synth sounds. It's utterly brilliant and beguiling, but we'd expect little less from the NYC-based producer.

Review: Versalife is a master of the deep and one of many aliases from the Dutchman born Boris Bunnik. From dub to techno to the electro he explores here, his grainy sound is impossibly atmospheric. 'Copepods' opens up with far-sighted and sustained chords that speak of a future metropolis and 'Ultraviolet' then rides a lush broken rhythm and has melodies that glow like fireflies. 'Counter-illumination' gets more turbulent with its edgy lines and rubbery reverberating bassline and 'Vortex Storm' is like a reflective hall of mirrors with tension and eeriness in the air.

Review: You might not yet know the name Velvet Skin but you will surely know of VIL, a top-level Portuguese techno producer who co-founded the Hayes Collective. He has already impressed on labels like Klockworks but embraced a new electro sound for this project which arrives on Eupasia. There is a purity to his sound that is compelling from the word go. Track one begins with squirreling synths, pinging cowbells and dark bass and then things grow more frantic and paranoid on track two, trippy on track three and then slow down to get sludgy and acidic on track four. Track five ends with atmospheric ambient swampiness.

Review: Jersey City-based Jorge Velez has long been one of the US underground's most revered figures to those in the know. Largely predating the current fascination with lo-fi analogue productions, something shown on the excellent MMT Tape Series compilation which delved into his early archives, his work as Professor Genuis on Italians Do It Better and Thisisnotanexit was followed by the conceptual Hassan LP on L.I.E.S. which provided a soundtrack to an imaginary film based on a shadowy Middle Eastern cult formed in the 11th century. Here Velez return to Ron Morelli's stable with Territories, a six-track LP that passes through "menacing drones to EBM influenced floor tracks to Sakamoto-esque melodic experiments," with a "distinct atmosphere suitable for home listening or adventurous club play." Even for those who are familiar with the odd structures Velez creates with his hardware, this is a wild trip worthy of much closer inspection.

Review: First released as a very limited 2 x 10-inch vinyl package in 2017, Luxor Necropolitics is widely considered to be one of Domimic Fernow's most accessible albums as Vatican Shadow. It was produced in collaboration with Teflon Tel Aviv member Joshua Eustis and, as this first ever CD edition proves, boasts more relatively straightforward moments than we're used to from the American experimentalist. Of course, his usual influences and sonic traits are still present - an obsession with geopolitics and the Middle East in particular, shards of melancholic melody, dark and dystopian techno grooves - but this time packaged into accessible, often rhythm-driven chunks rather than abstract ambient excursions and sample-heavy sound collages.

It's the world of dubby technician Stelios Vassiloudis and opens with 'Laureles', a menace and broken beat cut with a dark soul. 'Include Unistd' brings a more unsettling mix of clanging industrial sounds to an underwater world and as if by magic it is Conforce who remixes have ing put out a vast wealth of sounds that explore similar sonic territory. Review: De Niro Is Concerned is the latest compilation to surface on Nina Kraviz's trip imprint - the Siberian artist's label gaining new momentum in 2015 and diversifying thanks to a selection of fresh artists - and it's an exquisite blend of house, techno and straight-up jack-funk. Among others, you have Iceland's Bjarki with the raw and sparse "Revolution", Millsian Detroit sounds from Deniro on Dumans, and Kraviz herself with Exos on the wavey and hypnotic "No Criminals". Review: Byakku: Tai Braindance is a welcome collaboration between two retro-futurist imprints, '90s IDM revivalists Childhood Intelligence (an organization run from Berlin and Tokyo) and London-based bleep, acid, rave and hardcore specialists Tone Dropout. Featuring tracks from artists associated with both labels, it's a giddy and largely celebratory fusion of both labels' styles with an added dollop of interplanetary sci-fi futurism. But as big time breakbeat lovers we're glad they have cooked us up another serving. This fifth edition doesn't muck about either with the crashing jungle intensity of Starhawk & Friends's 'X-22' opening up. There is French rap over more crunchy analogue drums on Rambal Cochet's 'Metacortex' manic industrial electro noise on Jack Carel's contribution and an ice cold sense of cold wave funk to Neud Photo's standout 'Spark Knock.' It has proved so popular that it now comes on a special vinyl release that packs in eight of the best tunes to feature on the CD. The mysterious producer is now back on their own outlet with another four stylish offerings. 'Ancient Beauty' is all jacked up drums and mysterious chords. Review: While the heads continue debating where techno has gone in the last few years, with a new generation of ultra-hard, ultra-fast artists and DJs threatening to break through what remaining walls of sanity were still propping up warehouse parties, Use Your Difference to Make the Difference drops and proves it couldn't give a shit about labels or categories, and nor could those behind the record. Words like 'tough' don't really cut it when it comes to stuff like this. Tracks like 'Gabba Masta' might sell some down the wrong path, though - it's heavy and pounding but stops someway short of gabber itself, actually offering some of the most serene harmonies on the record before exploding into its full throttle, stripped back drum-riff-off. And nothing here really lets you off those kind of hooks. But, in a world of nuances, why should they?

Review: Troekurovo Recordings is a production team made up of Toki Fuko, Vadim Basov and Evgeny Vorontsov and they have been hidden away deep in some enchanted Russian forests recording music. Now they are putting out the results on this superb double pack. This project started back in 2016 as a live experimental jam and is now an annual tradition made on loads of analogue gear on the banks of a canyon that was formed many years ago by a melting glacier. The locale provides inspiration - from the fresh country air to the meteor showers often visible overhead - for the music making which is strictly "no preparation, no pre-programming - hardware, friends and live improvisation only."

Review: The sophomore release on Miami's Alchemista comes from Translate (Teo Pellegrino) and Joel Pulso, two rising Argentinian producers who join forces for some seriously mental techno excursions on 'Cuadricular Dreaming Pannel'. The first side of this essential 12' features the hypnotic interplanetary minimalism of 'Specific Angles' reminiscent of classic Sleeparchive, followed by the majestic and cyclical title track which this time takes its cues from Jeff Mills' unmistakable Axis sound. Review: After an incredible inauguration by legend Robert Armani, the second release on Techno Parade Vinyl comes from rising Chinese techno producer TPMP. The Chengdu-based arranger, mixer, mastering engineer and Eurorack modular designer presents eight original tracks on his debut vinyl album, with an extensive selection of remixes by some of the scene's biggest names such as the aforementioned Armani, Samuel L. Session and Waffensupermarkt. Style wise, TPMP goes for that greyscale dub techno sound, counting the likes of Basic Channel and Echospace as influences. Whether it's the locomotive minimalism of 'White Point', the cavernous and glacial body bash of "Gray Point" or the deconstructed EBM of "White Line" - Hardester High Frequency proves that TPMP is one to watch!

Review: When a label calls itself Bring Dat Ass you can bet your bottom dollar that it's going to release proper sleazy electro. Enter Toribio with a superb four track EP of just that to get this new imprint underway. 'No Pare' is a firing cut the kick off with - synths dart about with their own mind, the tested bassline never lets up and the analogue drums jack for days. 'Work Dat Shit' is a little slower and bumpier with some bright acid prickles and 'Cimarron Palace' then unfolds with the same swing of a UK funky track. Review: Toni Moralez is back with a new project by the name of Echoes From The Grave and it debuts on Mutual Pleasure with four tracks of murky underworld electro. 'Don't B Shy (Turn Around)' is pure sleaze. A dirty banger for dancefloor madness. 'I Wanna Suck Ur Dick (Long N Hard)' is a more lithe and bouncy cut with bright hooks buried below naughty vocals and hurried drums and then 'Take Off Ur Clothes' keeps the filth going with another highly potent electro groove overlaid with some urgent synth tension. 'Take Off Ur Clothes' (feat YBM - partiboi69 Cheek Spreading rework) is a slick and unrelenting minimal electro rhythm with real future charm.

Review: The Suara label is well known for being run by Coyu, a guy who really loves cats. Musically, he started out loving house, then tech, and now gets his thrills from techno if this new EP is anything to go by. It's a selection of remixes of 'Sunshine' and first up is the top tier duo of SHDW & Obscure Shape who go for the jugular with a hard hitting version, firing synths flashing for the metallic drum loops and a rising sense of melodic tension. The boss then brings a more textured and bulky remix which has some nice tripped out melodies and on the flip is a driving Funk Assault remix and whistle blowing 90s revival sound from Marlon Hoffstadt aka DJ Daddy Trance.

Review: Prolific Ukrainian producer Stanislav Tolkachev returns this week with a new one for Rotterdam's MORD imprint. The How Much Do You Know EP features once again his idiosyncratic style of techno music: whether it's the multi-layered and widescreen arrangement of opening cut 'Pockets Full Of Lighters' which is truly indicative of his majestic style on the A-side, followed by the pounding, peak-time minimal assault of 'Zero Seconds Ago'. On the second side, Tolkachev presents more off-kilter offerings like on the experimental beats of 'One-Armed Leg' or the expansive electro of 'Talking Drum'. Tolkachev continues to prove himself as one of the most innovative producers in modern techno music with this release.

Review: Moscow-based deep techno artist Toki Fuko arrives on Russian label Luck of Access with three cerebral tracks forming his glittering new EP, 'Sanctum'. Starting with the expanding and contracting spaciousness of the title track, 'Sanctum', Korotaev allows space for reverberating synthlines to extend outwards, skittering into the distance across the pulsating core of the track, exploring a reflective space that feels at once private and collective. For the second side, everything slows down to a patient, meditative pace. Luxuriating in a moment of slowed breathing, 'Draft' unfolds in a series of exhaling atmospheres, delicately punctuated with strokes of light, glistening on the surface of a rippling body of water. The final track, 'Drift', moves downstream, driven by a winding ambience and decorated with flurries of unravelling organic percussion. At the heart of each of these tracks is a force that feels eternal, held in undulating patterns that continue long beyond their end.

Review: Following his impressive debut on Submersive's VA Osmotic Particles in 2021, Toki Fuko returns with his inaugural solo release on the label. His Hues of Movement EP comprises three original tracks and remixes by Anthony Linell and Artefakt, all of which embody Submersive's ethos of deep, hypnotic techno. Fuko impresses as always with his well crafted soundscapes blending electrical pulses with catchy drum sequences. Linell's Train remix fuses his style with Fuko's to make for a dub-influenced journey while Artefakt's 'Warble' remix takes things into darker worlds filled with unrelenting tension.

Review: Pretty much all Drumcode releases are colossal and anthem-like - it's the imprint's niche, after all - but this two-tracker from Stockholm stalwart Tiger Stripes is particularly sizeable. A-side 'Nocturne', for example, is as driving, mind-altering and breathless as they come, with Hardfloor style acid motifs, twinkling piano breakdowns, trancey riffs and enveloping aural textures rising above a blisteringly tough and intense beat. The pulsating tech-trance vibe is further explored on 'Renegade', a track whose elongated, slowly rising breakdown - which comes complete with glassy-eyed vocal samples, does a brilliant job in stirring the senses and raising the pressure out on the dancefloor.

Review: Terrace is a guise of Stefan Robbers and there is a sombre sense of end of the world finality to this new EP on Cyphon. 'Territorial' is a dubby electro cut that seems to want to fight for its right to party, while 'Thermon' has a nagging bassline and bittersweet chords that suggest the end is near and resistance is futile. 'Woodward' picks up the pace with some swinging drum funk and muted acid lines that all come with a healthy dose of futurism and 'Ritual' is the most prickly and kinetic rhythm of the lot. A classy EP full of cinematic musical adventures.

Review: When you look back at the first PlayStation several landmark releases spring to mind - Resident Evil, Tekken 2, Crash Bandicoot - the list could go on much longer and should definitely include Wipeout and Wipeout 2097. Both were renowned for combining high pace, futuristic visuals with contemporary electronic club music from some of the biggest producers and acts at the time. Less remembered, in Europe at least, is the Ape Escape series, an intense party-platform title which arguably has the greatest dance music game score of all time. Comprising six tracks from that saga, this compilation of Soichi Terada's soundtracks emphasises that bold point. Opening on the crisp, punchy techno drive of 'Specters Factory', we find ourselves in suitably spooky jungle ('Haunted House'), rumbling dnb ('Spectors Castle') and roughneck hardcore bass ('Coasters'), among other made up genres. A collection which resembles Terada's amazing 1996 album, Sumo Jungle and makes a case for the Japanese enigma as one of dance music's most underrated geniuses.

Tensal's intense opener 'Collusion' builds through twisted synths and frenzied pads until thunderous drums land to carry it away. Leiras opts for a much more minimal sound with pulsing synths over slipper rubber drums on 'Sensitive Data. Tuber's 'Rapid Eye Movement' is dark, tense and tunnelling techno for brain frying 5 am sets and last of all, Svreca shows his class with his smoother liner techno roller.

Review: Tensal has quickly established his self-titled label as a place to find fresh and innovative techno. The Spaniard now returns with some of his own wares in the form of this M EP. 'MA1' is an off balance stomper with psychedelic synths rippling over the hard-assed drums. 'MA2' is more raw with fizzing leads ticking your inner ear and dark stomping drums down low. 'MB1' brings percussive flair to the mix with more loose limbed drum funk and all of the above is combined on the dark and intense closer 'MB2' to make for another very useful EP.

Review: Columbus, Ohio DJ, producer and scene instigator Teakup aka Lauri Reponen is back with another EP that follows in the footsteps of local forefathers such as Titonton Duvante, Archetype and Todd Sines. His music blends perfectly the sounds of UKG, breaks, minimal and techno both past and present. 'Signal 23' is a quick-stepping dub tech cut with clipped and funky drum programming while 'Valve' is more rhythmically loose and playful in its elastic approach. 'Felopzd' has tightly wound melodic motifs and clattering percussion over a glitchy but swinging beat and 'Pad Thai Mystic' (feat Foi Oi Oi) closes out with some tense late-night minimalism.
