Review: Zodiac Childs are a real hero duo in the world of spaced out breakbeats. They don't release often - just a few times since 2018, but always on revered labels like Furthur Electronix, Exalt and their own Zodiac Wax, but when they do it is a real event. Atoms to Atoms is a long awaited debut album spread across six glorious sides of vinyl, packed with cosmic breaks, sci-fi ambience and lush future soundscapes. Plenty of subtle rave signifiers are deeply entrenched in these pieces, which range from purely atmospheric such as 'Kepler Track Two' to absolutely blissed out dance floor territory as on 'O To The M.' These tracks could have been unearthed on a DAT lost since 1994, or they could be beamed back from the future. Either way, they're excellent.

Review: Voices From The Lake is the pairing of Italian techno craftsmen and sound sculptors Donato Dozzy and Neel. They came together to do a live show at the famed Labyrinth festival in Japan and that's what gave rise to this new now seminal album. It's a deeply meditative and dubbed-out world of delicate synths and rolling drums that change only slightly and slowly but manage to keep you utterly locked in for the duration. It's pure techno that has been remastered for this new edition across eight sides of wax. An absolute modern classic for sure.

Review: The fascinating (and wholly appropriate) concept behind Ostgut Ton's fifth anniversary compilation was conceived by British born, Berlin based artist Emika. On a night out at the label's legendary affiliate club Berghain she noticed the walls were moving and giving off their own frequencies, such was the ferocity and energy of the music and revellers within. And so Funf was born; with Berghain and Panorama Bar's extensive family of artists given four gigabytes of field recordings taken from within the club after hours - be it humming fridges, creaking doors or unseen footsteps - and asked to make a track using these sounds as their foundation. The results are absolutely stunning, with a disparate yet inexorably linked selection of tracks that range from subtle soundscapes (Emika's "Changing Room") to experimental dubstep (Fiedel's debut production "Doors To Manual"), minimal house (Dinky's "Twelve To Four") and banging techno (Shed's "Boom Room"). Split across seven 12"s, this is an absolutely unmissable slice of contemporary techno history.

Review: Despite Traum Schallplatten only establishing the Telrae sub label in 2010, the dub techno operation has been in remarkably prolific form, dropping some fifteen EPs from the likes of Salz, Martin Schulte, Reimut Van Bonn and Sven Weisseman. They close proceedings on 2012 in the best way possible with the rather dashing Archive Box Set, an 11 x 10" coloured vinyl package brandishing some 22 tracks. Most of the aforementioned artists contribute, as do Stefan Gubatz, Tobias Horberg and Deepchild for a Telrae showcase that will appeal equally to the dub techno completists and limited edition vinyl lovers.

Review: It's fair to say that few other labels would retain such a degree of consistency and adventure over the duration of a compilation series as Cocoon have done with their alphabetized collections. Arriving at the letter N, Sven Vath's label once again draws together tracks from artists close to Cocoon as well as some less associated across six slabs of vinyl. If you graced Ibiza over the summer season you may well have heard papa Vath dropping some of the tracks contained within at Cocoon's residency at Amnesia. In terms of tracklisting, it's a typically diverse affair with the various shades of techno from Lucy, Ricardo Tobar and Truncate complemented by the presence of Aril Brikha, Markus Fix, Ripperton and more.

Review: If you're going to produce a box set to celebrate your label's 25th birthday, you may as well do it in style. That was certainly Michael Reinboth's thinking when he put together this luxurious set marking a quarter of a century since the launch of his admired Compost Records imprint. It boasts no less than ten slabs of wax containing fresh remixes of catalogue cuts from a stellar cast of house, techno and disco producers (think Glenn Underground, Zenker Brothers, Francois K, Ron Trent, Moodymann, Mark E and Gerd Janson) and a handful of killer bonus cuts (most notably early Move D classic "Hurt Me"). In addition, the box also contains two mix tapes, a pin badge, bag and tons of stickers. Basically, it's a beautiful item packed full of quality music and label merchandise.

Review: Sushitech's second chapter of their Tessera compilations has been in the making for over two years. It's not hard to understand why, however. This monstrous 5 disc release is riddled with techno killers of the highest calibre, from start to finish. We knew that these guys were reliable purveyors of fine electronic dance music, but this is a truly impressive showcase, and surely up there with the likes of Ostgut Ton. In fact, this compilation goes even beyond the immediate techno remit. It's difficult to pick out the highlights here; everything is solid, and even the opening dub echoes of "Prelude" is enough to get us salivating. There's a rare appearance on the dubbed-out deep house of "Skank" featuring Rhauder, Steve O'Sullivan makes a sleek appearance, Delano Smith offers two magnetic pieces of Detroit magic, XDB's "Frost" is nothing short of spectacular, and even Efdemin's glitchy, minimalist deep house seems more poignant than usual. This is a big'un - don't miss it.

Review: Anyone looking to bolster the freakier end of their techno collection could do worse than checking out this bumper compilation from Advance Public Listening. It is a mighty four vinyl box set with tens of tracks across eight sides of heavyweight vinyl (that makes the whole thing weigh in at not that for off a kilo of wax.) It takes in plenty of experimental sounds, ambient laced tracks for 5am dreaming and mind melting cuts for the after party. Review: The Stone Techno Series from The Third Room aims to pay homage to the historic coalmines at the Zollverein, Europe's largest complex of the sort. Techno's links to heavy industry are often duly noted in the press, but the likening of techno to the extraction of raw materials is not so much - which is what lends the music on this compilation a special character. With contributions from the likes of Perc, Lokier, Kink, James Ruskin, Luke Slater and Adiel, techno is lent a softer and more natural-mineral edge - as if the fast pummelling of the kick drum were caused by repetitive geological processes, not heavy pistonry or machine tools. That's all thanks to its use of samples recorded directly at the mines at Ruhr. All this complements an upcoming festival at the site, at which many of the featuring artists will play.

Just check the opening round of tense, emotionally charged tech from Mind Against & Sideral, 'Criseide' and you'll get a feel for the vibe of the whole release. While there's a big-room appeal to these tracks, the emphasis is on melancholic, introspective moods such as the heartfelt piano sneaking into Dyzen's 'Talk To Me' or the intriguing re-framing of the house diva vocal in sad-eyed chords on Ivory's 'There Would Come A Day'.
