Review: Despite boasting a discography that stretches all the way back to 1994, Italian techno stalwart Sam Paganini has tended to shy away from the full-length format. Zenith is only his third album to date, and his first since the Drumcode-released Satellite in 2014. While largely dancefloor-focused, it's perhaps a little more varied and far-sighted than some may expect. Thrusting but rubbery club techno workouts (see the tribal-tinged "Elevator", moody "Komet" and bombastic "Hypnotise") are joined by more cerebral cuts that variously touch on Pete Namlook style ambient ("Alone"), French Touch synth-pop ("Plastique"), dreamy broken house ("Moonless") and punchy acid-electro ('Frozen").

Review: Lucy and Speedy J join forces as Zeitgeber for this self titled album through the former's Stroboscopic Artefacts label. Lucy's gradual shift towards more experimental sounds as both a producer and label boss seems to have pricked the ears of Speedy J, aka Jochem Paap, with the iconic Dutch techno producer inviting his Italian counterpart to work on a collaborative project - the results on this eight track LP speak for themselves. Together, the individual styles of each producer are represented well but there's a definite sense that Paap and Mortellaro are pushing themselves too with the results much more than your traditional techno LP, instead it's an advancement on the avant-garde approach Lucy was pushing on last year's Banality Of Evil EP.

Review: Lawrence's latest full-length, his third and final for Mule Musiq, is described by its' creator as being "deep and mystical". It was inspired, in part, by a Tokyo green space of the same name, and includes elements recorded by Lawrence's live band, Sky Walking, and plenty of field recordings to add texture. The result is a luscious deep house and techno set that veers from the dreamy and rolling ("Tensui"), and lovably bouncy (delicious IDM/electro excursions "Ava" and "Simmer"), to deep and dirty ("Joy Ride"), via wide-eyed humidity (the hypnotic and beautiful "Illuminated"). Lawrence rarely fails to disappoint, of course, but even by his standards Yoyogi Park is something special.

Review: Montreal maven Priori's continued rush of beautifully rendered club magic manifests in a new album on the NAFF label he co-steers with Ex-Terrestrial. As you may well expect by now, his approach balances beauteous ambient passages full of advanced synthesis with delicate techno and rolling broken beat, imbued with a sense of warmth and playfulness but never at the expense of the music's emotional depth. Stand-out moments on Your Own Power include slowly unfurling downtempo bliss-out 'Shkrub' and the brooding, cerebral passages of 'The Village', but truthfully the whole album plays out in a cascade of immaculate production and heartwarming composition. The NAFF gear always flies out, so don't sleep on this one.

Review: The Jasper Street Co are well known in house circles for their uplifting, gospel tinged house sounds. Pure, unadulterated joy oozes from everything they touch - it doesn't sound particularly new, but neither does it sound dated. Here the longtime house label Nervous save up a massive package of no fewer than eight remixes across a bright yellow double vinyl Tensake does a fine job of going big, Dr Packer simmers down the groove to something steamy and Teddy Douglas goes for an old school and funk licked vibe. Micfreak & DJ Spen serve up the most party ready cut of them all.

Review: Amid a ton of releases on the likes of Wrong Island and CPU in recent months, the legendary recovering optimist Automatic Tasty now flings a full album upside our faces. His ninth long'un, as always it's both jaunty and contemplative in equal measure as he tweaks his machines to create bubbling little narratives that weave in and out of the shades. At one moment you're weeping to a sartorial lament ("Illegal Trousers"), the next you're skipping on clouds on a secret level in your favourite childhood side-scroller ('One Of These Days'), the next you're doing the locomotion on Tomorrow's World ('Dialup') the next you're rolling out the lino for a slo-mo robo dance ('Scaldy Fiver') Slinky, cheery, honest analog fun; You'll Never Work In This Town Again isn't a threat... It's a promise

Review: Those who've been paying close attention will know that Alex 'Omar' Smith has been mixing things up musically of late, veering away from the deep Detroit house he's famed for in order to explore a wider range of influences. New album "You Want" doesn't exactly reverse this trend, but it is far more rooted in his particular brand of seductive, off-kilter deepness and techno-tinged hypnotism than recent singles. That's undeniably a good thing, because nobody does crunchy, machine driven club jams better than the Motor City producer. There are nods towards Italian style piano house, disco, broken beat, jazz funk, Masters at Work and - more surprisingly - industrial techno (see the filthy closing cut) - but the resultant cuts don't sound like anything other than tried-and-tested Omar-S club jams.

Review: It's impossible not to discuss Shinichi Atobe without the 'mysterious' precursor. Little is known about him besides the fact he disappeared for 13 years after his first release and that he makes exceptional techno. While his previous 'comeback' releases have been on the colder end of the spectrum, there's something about Yes which ushers in a sense of positivity and warmth. The gentle glissandos of 'Rain 3', the sprightly bounce of 'Yes' and the more driven, Detroit-inspired 'Loop 1' are just some of the bubblesome highlights from this Japanese enigma.

Review: Data Memory Access is the fun-loving duo of Jacopo Latini and Giammarco Orsini, two Italian artists who've mastered the art of cathartic breakwork. Showing that instantiating ecstasy in the listener is an art unto itself, Yearning For Cobalt comes as their first album, and contains ten tracks that do no less than lay the depth on thick. Fans of Bicep or Indopan will be satisfied, as lead cuts like 'Cobalt', 'Nowhere' and 'Transcendence' deal in chorus-doused vocal samples, spitty breaks and awestruck pads of wonder.

Review: San Fran's unstoppable and enduring tech house craftsman John Tejada is also super reliable. His sound is well established, but he always does enough with each new release to embellish it a little further. Returning now to his home label of Kompakt, he refines his palette to silky melodies, fuzzy pads and crisp beats that are superbly pleasing for both your ears and your heels. 'Sheltered' is a particularly classy cut of deft tech minimalism, 'Spectral Progressions' expires ambient broken beats with lush pad work and 'Panacea' picks up the pace in scintillant fashion. This might be his best work in years.

His manic sound has recently taken him to some sold out shows around the world and now comes Tacker, a new album that fuses rock with electronic stylings on Alter. Nirvana's 'Oh, The Guilt', Mindflayer's album 'It's Always 1999', and the Rah Bras song 'Sooop Toe Pump Girls' have all been given as points of inspiration for this most brain-fizzing, hardcore collision of worlds.

Review: Under the SolarX alias, Roman Belavkin was one of the leading lights of the Russian IDM scene in the mid-to-late '90s, though very few copies of his cassette and CD releases ever made it in to record stores outside the former Soviet Union. Furthermore, this is the first ever reissue of Belavkin's 1997 sophomore set, "X-Rated", an album that remains a firm favourite in the Russian electronic underground. There's much to admire throughout, with Belavkin effortlessly joining the dots between the skittish, angular rhythms of Autechre, Rephlex-esque "Braindance", Aphex Twin style ambient, early Squarepusher-esque "drill and bass" business and hypnotic ambient techno.

Review: Those who know, know how strong the Dutch electro scene has been since the early 90s and Netherlands label BAKK has a special compilation here with many excellent electro tracks to enjoy - no less than 11 tunes in total, spread across three pieces of wax. The list of artists is impressive, from Legowelt, Antenna, SFV Acid and more. This pack starts off with a stunner called 'Bos Ochtendmist' by Legowelt, a phased out and radiant futuristic theme song that's just downright beautiful! Rather than imitating any other city's history of the style's, these artists have their own style - see Aurora Halal's 'Spiral' as a great example, or Sfv Acid 's 'Urbanfury' which adds some nice IDM influences. The slow and deep bass on Tala Drum Corps's 'Gargoyle' is killer too. An early candidate for best electro comp of the year 2024.

Review: In all honesty, this latest compilation by Sweden's ever-impressive Kontra Musik caught us by surprise! Before we tell you how much we love this release, it's important to mention that we saw them as a label releasing disparate slices of quality techno, but hadn't predicted their unity as manifested by this get-together of artists. The opener "Weggeputscht" by The Durian Brothers is almost enough to invest the money in this release, a slow-burning tribal nodder with a deep bassline, but the rest of the material by the likes of TM404 or Jason Fine is also pure gold. Our favourites are: the 3D-layered techo of Fishermen on "Black Haze", Frak's bumpy "666", and Silent Servant's remix of "Time Track" by Mokira. Very warmly recommended.

Review: On his first solo release for some three years, Robag Wruhme is in a retrospective kind of mood. "Wuzzelbud FF" has been trailed as a "stylistic follow-up" to 2004 debut album, "Wuzzelbud KK", with the long-serving German producer stating his desire to make some "straightforward music for the dancefloor". It's certainly true that the set contains some genuinely serviceable club cuts - see the mildly foreboding techno growl of "Provol Eto", delightfully metallic and wonky tech-house bump of the title track and creepy stomp of "Veddel Braav" - but there's so much more to it than that. Elsewhere on the set, Wruhme memorably turns his hand to glacial ambient, turn-of-the-90s ambient techno, B12 style IDM and, on the memorable "Maiowu", the kind of Squarepusher and Autechre style madness that would once have been called "drill and bass".

Review: Best known as the figureheads of Equiknoxx, Gav Gavsborg and Jord Time Cow get super freaky on Jon K and Elle Andrews' MAL imprint with this extended EP / short LP deliciously titled Writing Ov Tomato. In keeping with their boundary-pushing experiments of yore, the results playfully twist and shout between the dancefloor and headphone wizardry with an air of subversive derring-do. The title track, for example, starts off as a surreal cascading percussive roll before turning into a hypnotic techno banger while 'No Sweat In My Sweatpants' deftly flips between soft chimes and booty shaking beats. The highlight for many, however, will be the finale 'Brent Bird'. Relentless, industrial strength but loaded with soul, it represents everything we love about Equiknoxx.

Review: The first compilation from Tom Carruthers’ Non-Stop Rhythm label – an outlet for unashamedly retro-futurist (and often authentically hardware driven) material from up-and-coming producers – is an undeniably impressive affair that takes channeling the sounds of the late 80s and early 90s very seriously. There are nods to classic, late-80s New Jersey Deep House and Chicago stalwart Larry Heard (Gynoid74 and BDSL), glassy-eyed and acid-flecked early ‘90s deep house (Carruthers’ own ‘Visions’), sweat-soaked Euro-techno (Phase-O-Matic), bleep & bass (Saftbass), LFO (Carruthers’ ‘North West’),Chicago jack-tracks (Kandacid), psychedelic electro (Caniform) and much more besides. More importantly, all of the tracks are timeless-sounding and club ready, making it the kind of set that will take up permanent residence in your record bag.

Review: With his many achievements in the field of true, critical deep house, Aybee has no need to remind anyone just what kind of imagination he has when it comes to crafting music, but he does just that on his latest LP Worlds. Just look to a track like "Landing", which shudders on some alien groove that's part jungle, part broken beat, and all sci-fi. Likewise "Moon's Whisper" plots an unknown course through galaxies of pads, and "What Is" equally revels in a cluster of starry chimes and tones. This is without a doubt an album of cosmic magnitude, carrying the futuristic torch that was passed on from the true techno fundamentalists and taking it somewhere fresh.

Review: After some time away the big man Levon comes down from on high with hands stretched aloft, the bearer of big tunes. Gone are the murky basement incantations of old - on this new album Vincent has not so much thrown open the curtains as carved a massive hole in the ceiling to let the sunlight in. Just feel the vitamin D raining down from that searing opening track, "Kiss Marry Kill". There are big Beefa-ready moments such as the DX7 bassline hook of "Flowers For Algernon", hymnal epics to part the seas like "The Vampire Lestat" and eye-swelling heart swoons for the sun down sensitive souls ("She Likes To Wave At Passing Boats"). On this record, Vincent is here for everyone, and we're so here for that.

Review: Berlin's lady of ladies, Steffi, returns to familiar settings with this latest album, a deep and calculating blend of technoid sonics for the mighty Ostgut Ton imprint. The DJ-producer has been known to deliver absurdly twisted sets at the Berlin institution over the years, but the majority of her work has been made up of short collaborations and comparatively more dance-centric material. World Of The Waking State feels like a change of gear, where the focus on dance has been replaced by something much more imperceptible and inward looking. From "Different Entities" to "All Living Things, the opening three tunes point to a noticeable struggle behind the production desk, a deep sense of melancholia which enables these spectacular electronic gems from having cross-cultural appeal. The flip of the first disc further experiments with the deeper end of the sound palette, which is something that can be said about this entire LP. While this might get the Ostgut hype at first, the passage of time will undoubtedly get people to see it as a classic. What an album - very hotly recommended.

Review: Henrik Jonsson's PST (Porn Sword Tobacco) project takes care of German imprint Workshop's latest release, with some typically drifting and dubbed-out house excursions. Whether it's cerebral, slo-mo techno as heard on 'Take One' or the particularly mental 'Limbic Soiree', or psyched-out downtempo journeys explored on of 'Limbic Soiree' or 'Tati', to the low-slung armchair dub of 'Enantiodromia' (Summer Of 2020 mix) - Workshop 31 features some of the best material we've heard from the Swedish producer since 2016's Recordings 1 - 4 with SVN. Highly recommended.
