Zzzz EP
Zzzz EP (12")
Cat: EPM 27V. Rel: 05 Dec 23

Techno
Kos (6:00)
ZZZZ (4:13)
Track 4 (5:31)
F9 (4:16)
Review: On this latest drop on EPM, the steadfast UK techno label welcomes steadfast UK techno titan Mark Broom for a collaboration with Australian in Berlin Patrik Carrera. The result is four slices of no-nonsense jackhammers from two experts in the field, leading in with the edgy loops and bludgeoning kicks of 'Kos' and neatly stepping over to the shoulder-shaking pressure of 'ZZZZ'. 'Track 4' features one of those deadly chord stabs which just lands squarely between the eyes, while 'F9' rides the cymbals mercilessly and keeps an abundance of funk in the low end - pure dancefloor dynamite in action from two well-versed detonators.

Review: The inscrutable artist that is DB1 first appeared in 2012 alongside Martsman, courtesy of the Hidden Hawaii collective, and the producer has been an integral part of the imprint's development ever since. It is now time for an LP from the mystery artist and its name, Zwischenwelt, is as difficult to interpret in the English language as its music is to describe into written words. What we can say is that it's a fresh and singular piece of music that is successfully prolonging the dub techno continuum with the originality that it deserves. If Basic Channel broke down their favoured 4/4 format, it would sound a little bit like "KTZ1" or "Quebe (part 1)", two broken techno bombs with a heartical soul. Tunes like "Zuki" do provide a more techno-minded framework, still rich in half-step movements, while "Jona" will cater to fans of the deep techno sound of artists like Dozzy. All in all, this is not an album to underestimate, and we're pretty confident that you'd be making a mistake by not copping it. HEAVY.

Review: O! Kult was a post-punk and industrial band from Yugoslavia that was active in the 1980s. Like many of their peers at the time, they were censored by the communist party that was in charge but that didn't stop them from making music and gaining a cult following. Their cut 'Zvestoba' has been found in old Radio student archives and brought back to life here and then remixed by modern luminaries Silent Servant, Christian Kroupa (who is one half of Black Dot) and 198319831983. They add weighty tech, EBM and moody electro vibes to make for a strong package.

Review: Osaka's Koshiro "YPY" Hino built his reputation on a series of fearlessly experimental cassette releases, before breaking cover to deliver a 12" of frazzled techno on Nous last year. Zurhyrethm marks his long-form vinyl debut, and contains eight suitably experimental tracks stretched across two slabs of wax. While there are clear tropical influences, a humid feel and nods towards the visceral pleasures of ambient, Hino's greatest strength is his eccentric drum programming. Zurhyrethm's dense - but often subtly mixed - percussive backing dominates throughout, with nods to African and South American rhythms, Sweet Exorcist's C.C.CD-era "clonk techno" (look it up), and the metallic clanking of classic industrial music.

Review: De Lichting member Human Space Machine makes his debut on Re.st with four uncompromising techno / broken beat fusions. Each cut writhing and exploring a different tempo and style but painting from the same palette, 'Zone' sets the technoid/D&B tone while 'Unmade' hurls us deep into the dubby abyss. Flip for more highly contrasting dynamics as 'Sigh' goes full-on ploughman 4x4 while 'Slo' lives up to its name in a deep and dreamy way. Get lost in the zone!

Zeks In Revolt (Roy England remix) (8:59)
Review: The only thing we know about the new Wage Slave label is that they believe "freedom begins with imagination". The shadowy label launch their catalogue with an equally enigmatic EP from Emmett Perlman, who lays down a quality techno tune in "Zeks In Revolt"; the pace is sluggish, the sonics sullen and grey-scaled, but somehow Perlman manages to find the light at the end of the tunnel thanks to a crescendo of pseudo acid. The track is utterly mashed up and twisted out by Roy England, a man who obviously is not faint-hearted and who loves a bit of head-nodding. Tip!

LB Dub Corp - "Roller" (feat Function - Len Faki interpretation) (6:28)

Substance - "Keine Angst" (5:53)
Review: Last year Berlin institution Ostgut Ton marked their ten-year anniversary with an extensive 30 track compilation housed across the width of ten 12"s and packed neatly in a rather fancy looking box set. Long since sold out, Ostgut have done the right thing by commencing a series of individual 12" reissues featuring all of the music for the label fans who missed out first time around. After Eins and Zwei, we arrive at Zehn / Drei which features a triplet of modern techno productions from four of the label's closest associates. Up top Len Faki remixes the LB Dub Corp and Function collaboration "Roller", adding a subtle few notches of intensity to the original, whilst Dave Sumner goes alone on the lead B-side track "DX3_Analog_Bass_Seq". Lastly Substance aka DJ Pete offers up "Keine Angst," a fleet-footed tribal stomper and jacking vocal samples.

Review: An intriguing release from Trensmat here as Russian pair Love Cult collaborate with Gnod's Druss on Yr Problems. Hopefully you know Petrozavodsk-based duo Anya Kuts and Ivan Afanasyev from their excellent Love Cult LP for Public Information that combined radiophonic textures and Russian folk motifs into a chillingly radioactive whole, which makes them like minded allies to Druss, a member of Salford-based krautrock-inspired band Gnod, whose solo productions cross into dark electronic territory with a similarly caustic atmosphere. The eight-track Yr Problems LP has the two acts contribute a pair of tracks under their own names each, and four collaborative tracks under the Love Cult Take Druss moniker. As you might expect, there's a foreboding sense that runs through much of this LP, as if seasick on sound waves. Wonderfully uneasy listening!

Youthman (4:53)
Youthman (Biodub remix) (5:49)
Review: Aussie duo Echo Inspectors join forces with yet two more cretive forces of nature, Subset and Prince Morella, to deliver 'Youthman' - in the artist and label's words - a "slung dubbed out, rootz laiden steppa". The dub influence rings as clear as a translucent glass bell that's just been peeled off the blowpipe; the track's vocalist, Morella, has already worked with Lee Perry, King Tubby and Scientist, so this is certainly a collaboration for those willing to follow the threads of dub as a lineage into dub techno. The original is slow and pacey enough - with Morella singing of broken barriers and Babylons - but it's the organic-atmos remix from Biodub that really takes the cake for us, with its daring additions of swing and future garage influences.

Review: Though already experts in raw as you like house and techno, FJAAK manage to outdo themselves here with another blistering selection of high grade bangers for sweaty dance floors. Twisted electronics warp round a jumbled breakbeat on 'Identity' and cannot fail to get you jacked. 'Chunks' is built on a different, softer breakbeat, but overload with darkened vocals and whirring machines that hint at a dystopian future. Things get utterly unhinged on 'Falcon Punch' which is all twisted metal and motherboard meltdowns tied to a heavy techno beat and 'Your Time Is Ov3r' is contorted, coruscated and caustic techno.

Your Mind (Charles D Epic mix) (8:00)
Your Mind (Charles D Acid Line mix) (7:38)
Review: Here's a big old belter on that biggest of techno fortresses, Drumcode. On this two-track slammer, Adam Beyer and Bart Skils' monster track 'Your Mind' gets revisited by New York up and comer Charles D. After releases on Say What? and Pryda, D is able to show off his skills twice over, on the A-side living up to the billing of the 'Epic mix' of 'Your Mind' by bringing in the big, swelling pads that can fill a stadium and get hands raised aloft. On the flip, the 'Acid Line' version unsurprisingly brings a little 303 action into the mix, and makes sure the undercarriage is a thunderous juggernaut of supersized techno.

Review: Midland has been smart about his arc as a producer, taking his time rather than churning out releases for the sake of it. As such, when we do get something new from the lad, it always feels like an occasion, and of course the music invariably matches the mood. 'You Never Take Me Dancing' is in fact the B-side opener on this new four-track record, but it plays out like the lead role on an EP bursting with fresh ideas. 'Strangers On The Train' toys with more experimental synthesis and a stripped back mix down that takes its cues from footwork, while 'Drift Into The Algorithm' plays out as the slinkier, shimmering house he's perhaps been better known for of late. The class and consideration just spills out of this record - more than worth waiting for.

Review: As any techno head will know, Lewis Fautzi has been at the heart of the contemporary scene for a number of years. He is a hugely consistent producer who turns out effective tunes but tunes that also have something about them which makes them stand out. He's do so mostly on Soma but also labels like Figure and Polegroup. Here it is Mord who welcome him for four more powerful cuts that take in the fizzing pads and cantering drums of 'Murder The Limits', dark industrial intensity of 'No Saint, I Know' and the unreeling drum pressure of 'Into The Body'. 'Least At Last' is the trippy closer that sounds like a spacecraft in terminal meltdown.

Review: Simo Cell has been on the radar of techno lovers for a hot minute. The French artist has got something unique about the way he designs his tunes and that has never been more clear to see than on this new min album, YES.DJ. It is his first solo outing since 2018 on his own TemeT label and mixes up heavy, steel-plated bangers with lurching, bass heavy pieces of dystopian rhythm. The temps range from arounds 100 to 160 and so it alludes up to a well sequenced and coherent ride with high energy bombs like 'Cegetel' next to body-popping classics like the title track.

Hieroglyphic Being - "An Astronomical Object" (6:29)
Review: Mother Tongue's 'Yellow Jackets' series is wilfully eclectic, meaning second-guessing what will be on the next release is nigh-on impossible, but undeniably essential. Put simply, each EP in the series so far has been nigh on essential. Happily, volume five is superb too. On side A, Detroit scene stalwart Marcellus Pittman does a superb job of reworking a cult classic - Belgian outfit Arbeit Adelt's 1983 post-punk masterpiece 'Death Disco'. His resultant re-edit emphasises the track's weighty, low-slung groove, mind-mangling electronics and weirdo noises, extending the intro and outro to allow DJs to ride the mix. Over on side B, Chicagoan genius Jamal Moss dons the Hieroglyphic Being guise and offers up a sublime slab of intergalactic excellence, peppering a deep, shuffling, distorted rhythm track with spacey electronics and shimmering, star-gazing melodies.

Review: Deep techno lovers Hypnus have been showcasing the work of Paul Roeleveld aka Rambadu for some time. Only back in 2021 was he a newcomer with a sound that belied that status and now a few years on he has kept impressing. 'Yatra' is slow and deep, menacing and full of paranoia as snaking synths slithering along a desolate landscape. 'Nadi' has a dubby undercurrent and percolating grooves that gurgle and spit like molten lava, and 'Reis' is utterly stripped back to deep space pulses and a subtle, barely-there rhythm that is full of suspense. 'Setu' shuts down with more unsettling and otherworldly deepness and alien sound designs.

Review: GB aka Gifted & Blessed is one of those house artists who bring real and rare musicianship to his craft. Whenever he drops new music it is always worth hearing, as is the case here on his own Technoindigenous Studies label. The story behind this one is that GB found an old Yamaha keyboard dropped in a skip and decided to take it home and see what he could do with it. It took years until he finally turned it on but when he did he found a magical new world of souls available to him via MIDI. They are presented here on a cosmic and expansive EP of glistening synth work and fresh rhythms.

Review: Common Series founder Marco Erroi dons his XXXV Edits hat once more for a trip into the dark side of the disco, digging up heaters from the formative years of electronic dance music and giving it a gnarly tweak for the deviant techno crowd. First up is 'Walk', which does some dirty acid magic with a Skatt Bros classic, ably assisted by Robert Crash. There's more bubbling 303 magic to savour on 'Life', while 'Touch' throws down hard on the drums and vocal edits with devastating, club-wrecking results. The Mechanical Man lends a hand on 'Phone', which rides an unsettlingly reverbed vocal which comes off sounding a little like Seven Davis Jr.
