Review: Fans of stripped-back, minimalist techno - particularly the Eastern European variant focused around Romania's thriving scene - will happily tell you that every release from Christi Cons and Vlad Caia's Sideways Invisibility Theory project (AKA SIT) is worth checking. This, a double-pack containing half of the tracks from their new album (a second part is also available) is certainly noteworthy. It features a quintet of trippy, low-slung late night workouts seemingly designed to operate in the cracks between tech-house and minimal techno. There are naturally subtle variations throughout - a nod to dub techno here, a psychedelic acid line or dreamy deep house texture there - but throughout, their focus remains firmly on wonky early morning workouts.

Review: "In music, phrygian mode is dissonant, dark, depressive and gloomy. Its use was even forbidden in classical Greece for centuries because it was considered pagan. The sound of phrygian mode is rather exotic..."
Following the excellent Lost Series (Part 1) and (Part 2), Frigio label founder Juanpablo is back, this time with a full five track mini-LP: Darkness gathers above the needle's edge as the Colombian artist delivers the shadow strewn The Hideout. Abstraction is balanced against dancefloor clout across this quintet of underworld electronics. Rhythms curve and bend, scattering into the blackened chasms of "Chrome Light" and "Shadow's Color," before resurfacing into the light of "Indumorg." The title piece burns with a slow intensity. Sinister coils of Acid drip, skies bruise and ash rains before "They Watching You" closes. Juanpablo's builds on his past releasing, melting the lines of Techno, House and Electro and remoulding genres and blurring styles. Eclipsed sounds from the centre of Spain.

Review: General Elektro/Atelier founder Daniel Pflumm and DJ Sotofett first crossed swords as Busen way back in 2009, issuing the brilliantly wonky U.S. Import 12" on Sex Tags Mania. Just two subsequent releases from the pair have surfaced, one on Wania in 2010 and the Busen 12" for General Elektro a year later. Those partial to their eccentric electronics will be all over this new self-titled double pack of odd experiments. While there's a whisper of acid, techno and stripped-back house, for the most part they stick to more out-there fare, delivering a range of tracks that variously doff a cap to industrial, drone, ambient and sparse, stripped-back IDM. All, of course, were created using machines - some modular, it seems - rather than computers.

  6. Future Blondes - "Shadow Mirror" (5:14)
Review: "Off radar dance music / elitist pop culture transmitted from the Gooiland area in Holland" according to the label themselves on the Noblesse Oblige EP " it is a gathering of artists with a different heartbeat and mind-set... uncompromising sounds for the real freaks ... in this case this means sweaty EBM, dark techno and industrial acid". Yeah we couldn't have said it better ourselves really. Take for instance the A side cut "Apertanence" by Zagreb's LCN, a slow burning EBM grinder reminiscent of early DAF or Liaisons Dangereuses, the always impressive Noah Anthony aka Profligate with his new wave electro-punk noir on "Come Back (Bleeding House)". On the flip we've also got some reduced industrial techno courtesy of Osty on "Untitled One" and the gritty and uncompromising techno-punk of "Neugeborene Nachtmusik" by Yoshiwara.

Review: Madrid's Jose Rico of Downbeat Records has also previously released on Semantica and ELEVE and now teams up with Leonid as Cygnuss for some soulful deep techno on Night Drive. Freebeat has previously brought us Chicago deep4life legends Chris Gray and Da Rand Land: so they know what's what! We particularly enjoyed the high tech soul of "Gamma" and "Delta"; emotive tracks which were reminiscent of the classic vibes of Transmat or Strobe; you'd swear they were lost tapes from 1990. The beatless journey "Ycyg" has that early 90's kind of classic vibe too but more of the UK bleep techno variety. There's a right stomper in the form "Arsec" whose tough as nails 909 and 303 workout is reminiscent of the best of Plus 8. Definitely one for the nostalgists, matter of fact it's highly recommended!

Review: While Hendrick Grothe's Blac Kolor output is usually reserved for his own Basic Unit Productions, he has recently stepped out onto new, and highly suitable, imprints that span the entirety of the wider 'industrial' domain. Hands Productions, from Germany, is one such label that seems to work very well with Grothe's bottomless array of deathly sonics, and Awakening marks his first LP outside of BUP. These 14 tracks are well-balanced and well-placed, rising in momentum with each new kick drum; our favourites have to be "Loneliness", a downpour of industrial dread ike no other, "Awakening" itself for the quasi-techno approach, and the harsh, violent kicks of "Nano Creator". All together, this is shaping up to be a rather special affair to have on our shelves. 500 numbered copies, so act fast!

Review: Renowned producer, remixer, DJ and record label owner Carl Craig is one of the few artists who can truly claim to have shaped the sound of
modern electronic music. Making music since the tender age of 17, Craig has created everything from ambient soundscapes to jazz
during the past 20 years, but it's his work in dance music that is at his core. 'Sessions' is a long overdue album that brings together a personal
selection of Carl's incredible back catalogue, from his early work under the aliases Paperclip People and 69 to worldwide hits like 'Throw'
(recently covered live by LCD Soundsystem) and groundbreaking tracks like 'Bug in the Bassbin'. Alongside the classics, the two discs also showcase why Craig is still such a powerful force in music today with a diverse range of remixes for the likes of XPress 2, Theo Parrish and many others. For his rework for Junior Boys'. 'Like A Child' he was just nominated for a Grammy.
The selection also includes previously unreleased tracks, alternative versions of his own productions, as well as some exclusive unreleased
remixes. 'Sessions' reminds us of how exciting and unique Carl Craig's productions and remixes are and why he remains at the top of his game,
a retrospective of one of the world’s most influential and groundbreaking figures in electronic music.

On the b-side you find the remix of the track "Untitled 02" by the swedish artist Rivet and the "Secret Rave Mix" of "Rhythm Sticks" by G-23, originally released on London based label No Logo, done by the same author of the two originals.

The graphic of SECRET RAVE 01 is composed with a photo by Molly Macindoe. Heavily influenced by her father, a world traveller and architect, and her mother, a university lecturer and author, she developed a love for international travel and visited many faraway places - documenting the many diverse cultures she encountered. However, her attention was always drawn back to the free party community and, since 1997, she has participated in and documented the underground scene. Also she has already released a book called "Out Of Order" that is the culmination of ten years of work and a photographic celebration of the free party scene. Only 300 pressed....

Review: On this fine compilation, Sergey Barkalov has decided to showcase the dub techno side of his Mr Cloudy output. Bar a couple of previously unheard versions, all of the tracks were previously featured on limited edition, hard-to-find 12" singles. Although there are a couple of scratchy, experimental workouts, for the most part the tracks featured on Planets are far more melodious and ear catching than you'd perhaps expect. Barkalov's interpretation of the dub techno blueprint is a little looser than some of his contemporaries, with numerous ear pleasing electronic elements complimenting the heavy basslines and hazy sonic textures. It's these subtle tweaks, not to mention his impeccable production skills, that makes Planets such an enjoyable listen.

Review: Over the last few years, the team behind the Moog Sound Lab has encouraged a range of forward-thinking electronic musicians to come and jam on its obscure (and very rare) Modular 55 System prototype. The latest edition in the ongoing series of session recordings sees intergalactic Afro-futurist Hieroglyphic Being treat us to The Replicant Dream Sequence - an eight-part modular electronic treat that moves from drowsy, surprisingly colourful ambience ("Seq 1") and foreboding deep space soundscapes ("Seq 3"), to dreamy electronica ("Seq 4") and hypnotic EBM (standout "Seq 6", which also features his distinctive spoken vocals), via blistering techno ("Seq 8", "Seq 2"). Unlike many of his own releases, the sound is sparkling and crystal clear, allowing the quality of his compositions and arrangements to shine through.

Review: Some years back, Aleksi Perala joined forces with Rephlex co-founder Grant Wilson-Claridge to invent a custom musical scale, The Colundi Sequence, which boasts 128 frequencies "chosen via experimentation and philosophy". Perala has been using this as the basis of his attractive electronic work for some time, self-releasing 15 EPs of tracks since 2014. This epic, triple-vinyl album gathers together highlights from the previously download-only series - all with deliberately obtuse titles, made up of letters and numbers - and accurately showcases the depth and diversity of Perala's work. Clone is calling it "spiritual techno", and that's an excellent catch-all description for a set that variously touches on Motor City futurism, IDM, electro, dub techno, ambient and Rephlex-esque "braindance".
