X2 - "Time Elevation Rhythm"
X2 - "Zeta 1"
Saturn V - "[Kontrol] Your Mind"
Review: Proper old-school techno acid house banger on the mighty Relief records. This is a real rugged, banging EP of throwback 303s, pounding drum machines, and mental dancefloor dynamics. "Time Elevation Rhythm" is a heavy dose of sleazy acid and droning synths over some 808 drums - love those handclaps - while "Zeta 1" builds up with some Art of Noise-ish robo-vocal samples. "Kontrol Your Mind" wiggles into your brain with its old-school drums and cut-up vocal samples for a real dark banger.

Oblivion (DJ 3000 remix)
Oblivion (Sean Deason remix)
Review: This 12" sees a new track by Arne Weinberg plus stunning remixes by Duplex, DJ 3000 and Sean Deason. The original track "Oblivion" is a funked up melodic techno track with rolling beats that suit perfectly with the warm pulsating bassline. Duplex captures the atmosphere of the original perfectly to create an excellent smooth electro remix. On the flip, DJ 3000 presents his "Motech View" on "Oblivion". His remix is pure dancefloor action with an amazing irresistible groove. Real Detroit techno from this up-and-coming Submerge artist. Last but most certainly not least Sean Deason, founder of the legendary Matrix label out of Detroit, presents his interpretation. He keeps it raw and stripped down and the result is a hypnotising techno track for both heads and feet. Collectors watch out, 200 limited clear vinyl copies pressed.

Review: A very mysterious release from Berlin, produced by Torsten Pröfrock of the Hardwax crew. Along with Robert Henke, Torsten is one half of the infamous Monolake production team. The sound is deep, textured and rich. Two tracks that will appeal greatly to fans of Deep Chord and Basic Channel etc, but it has that little something extra, pushing it a little bit further. It's very good and is one of those that will be remembered for years to come. If ever the term "future classic" was apt, that time is now. Recommended.

Review: Syncom Data Records delivers three excellent new takes of the excellent, genre-defying and astounding "Beyond The Stars". Speedy J takes off with a deep, dark and minimal techno track from the industrial realms of Rotterdam. This will freak the crowds. Syncom Data go as deep as they can with the pulsating, low-end, trippy "SD Mix". Finally Legowelt proves his love for dirty, pumping Chicago jack with this constantly rising techno mix that builds to a superb climax that will lift the roof and rock the floor.

Review: Redshape's first appearance on this new German label is filled with subliminal funk. "Pink Dust" stepping in dirty and rough with analog energy and sharp synths, mighty force for every dancefloor. "Requiem" is a short, heavy - Food & Art - influenced, moment of breath in intergalactic wars. On the flip "3 Spin Dust" is a bad monster of beat and noise, made for the third turntable. Finishing with title track "Telefunk" on B2, deep deep, scary chords, old school percussions, dark pianos from another reality, step into the funk!

Minimal/Tech House
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from deep cover tech house crew OdD, but finally they're back on their own label OdD Music. As demonstrated throughout their discography, the pairing of Damian Daley and Danny Dixon have a unique touch when it comes to their craft, edging a little bite and verve into their productions which is instantly more interesting than 90% of music in the close vicinity. Even the comparatively minimal '1m Pendulum' has more than enough intrigue in the looping phrases darting around the groove. 'Hotep' has an almost French micro house flavour to it, but with a little UK rudeness when it reaches the final third. 'Obelisk' takes the prize though, edging some genuinely moving keys into the mix across a long form, live-feeling techno trip-out.

Review: Mr Kim(mo) Rapatti (aka Mono Junk) is the well-known man from Finland who gave us the timeless track "Channel B". Now re-released, after being remastered this year, in a colour vinyl. As above, in a classic Basic Channel/Chain Reaction vein, the epochal pieces from 1995. Resembling more of a primetime club set, elegant club bangers for large sound systems. As history, these tracks are indisputably influential, but there's something even more important, the fresh, rocking nature of this music sound like nothing else. Absolutely kicking!

Review: Gene is back again fresh off his Abe Duque Records contributions. Best known for his voodoo style techno on labels Cocoon and Stripped. "Off the Wagon" is quite a journey with a rolling bass thump leading into swirling synths and mysterious stabs grab hold of the sound. A long build pauses the mix and the hair raising twist begins. Review: Collaboration from Calm and Herbest Moon. Newly formed duo consisting of Calm (Kiyotaka Fukagawa) and Herbest Moon (Kazuyuki Shimizu). Deep lush tech house with serious Detroit leanings. Crisp percussion, bright keys and building energy all culminate in quite a strong finish, very much in a classic UR, G2G vein. B-side features two remixes from Gerald Mitchell of UR and Los Hermanos fame. He opts for a harder sound with more bottom and some scratching? (yes scratching) but still retains the deep edge of the original with waves of synths and acoustic guitars, but adds a much bigger finish of blazing congas, with a touch of acid and hardened sound. The final mix is aggressive, lean and to the point with some classic UR style strings to close.

Review: 'Kings of Techno' is the 6th instalment in a compilation series that grows more ubiquitous with each release. Over 130,000 albums have been sold in a series that brings together globally renowned DJs & producers to reveal their favourite tracks in the genre they themselves have become best known for. 'The Kings Of' albums allow compilers to make choices well beyond the usual restraints imposed on them. Each release features striking artwork from 60s Rolling Stones photographer & bon viveur extraordinaire Michael Joseph. Techno has its roots in Detroit, more precisely in the eclectic late radio programs of Charles "The Electrifying Mojo" Johnson which heavily featured early electronic works (Moroder, Kraftwerk...) and funk, giving birth to a new genre in the mind of a fistful of African-American students, 'The Belleville Three': Derrick May, Juan Atkins & Kevin Saunderson. Featuring a percussive, synthetic sound and a 4/4 beat, techno developed from a strictly underground phenomenon to an established, global genre when it came to England and from there the rest of the world. But this album is not your average techno mix album. How could it be - it features two of dance music's most significant players of the last 15 years. Laurent Garnier was one of the first Europeans to mix American house and techno music in Britain, earning his crown in the glory days of the Hacienda in the late 80s. Some tracks of his mix will be immediately recognizable as techno, such as the obscure 'Just A Feeling' by Instinct - deeply evocative of a 101 lost weekends in the 'Hac', as it affectionately became know by regulars - or the phenomenal 'Utopia' by Jeff Mills - a track which best defines the atmospheric soundscapes associated with the genre. But far from being strictly techno, Garnier's mix is both a testimony to the genre's main influences and an eclectic tribute to the town that saw its emergence: Detroit. The great beauty of his mix is the layering of the many styles, travelling from Alice Coltrane and Aretha Franklin to The Stooges, from Motown's Temptations to Slum Village to futuristic hip-hop-anthem-in-the-making Dabrye's collaboration with Jay Dee on 'Game Over'. Carl Craig grew up in Detroit; his diverse musical output has gained him fans from a broad range of musical backgrounds. Considered as one of the main figures of the second generation of Detroit techno producers, his extensive DJing all over the world witnessed the development of the genre. In direct contrast to Laurent's mix, his takes in music that mostly emanated from Europe. Like Laurent's, some falls easily into the techno category: Nitzer Ebb's industrial bass heavy 'Join In The Chant' fits seamlessly with Capricorn's 'I Need Love' from defunct early 90s trance label Sperm Records. Visage and Human League will be remembered for European chart success in the glory days of late 70s, early 80s pop music, the former perhaps better known for their hit 'Fade To Grey', the latter for their massive 'Don't You Want Me Baby'. Both had a high voltage current running through their music and significantly these tracks still gain a cheer on today's dance floor. So expect the unexpected, once again the meeting of minds in the 'Kings Of' series has spawned an informed, genre-defying double CD that's mixed to perfection, and that takes us on a journey from which we won't want to, or simply can't, return.

Review: Ellen's third studio album follows hot on the heels of the pre album taster 'Magma' and we dare say is even bigger than the mighty 'Berlinette'. Co-produced with Smash TV's Holger Zielske (her partner on the previous albums 'Stadtkind' and 'Berlinette') 'Thrills' sees Ellen combining some newfound vintage synth gear with more modern electronics that give these tracks a more devastating dancefloor punch than ever before, coupled with her trademark vocals and bass, bass everywhere. Techno has been redefined!

Minds Into Meltdown
Data Economics
Review: The third in Delta Funktionen's Setup One series maintains the Dutch producer's ability to make deep, robust techno that simply works on the dancefloor. "Another Dimension" contains those idiosyncratic rasping hats and disturbing vocal cuts - and like all techno primed for the floor, the beat just feels that little bit more robust when it comes back in after the breakdown. "Miss Communication", up next, contains some thunderous drums rolling deep beneath radar bleeps before the unbeatably named "Minds Into Meltdown" maintains the sweaty momentum on the flip. The toughest of the lot though has to be "Data Economics", one of the most weird, paranoid, downright brilliant dancefloor tracks we've heard all year. Just don't do what we did and accidentally blast it through the office speakers at 45 RPM...

Review: The classic song, Miranda which hasn't been available on wax in over 10 years, finally resurfaces with new mastering and a new package. This song was originally released as Untitled from the first Convextion release in history (MATRIX 1). One of the most sought after and beautifully composed works to come out of Detroit in the 90s. Played by everyone across the globe, luminaries such as Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Kenny Larkin, Carl Craig, Chain Reaction Crew, DJ Rolando, Swayzak, Mad Mike Banks, James Pennington, Felix and countless others. If you are a fan of Basic Channel or Carl Craig this release is one of the most important pieces to the puzzle that is Detroit techno!

Vdub
Review: The last 4/4 techno release was his amazing release on KMS "The Book". While busy running his own cool Vmax label for his obscure and more freaky electro-techno experiments, Heath drops some amazing techno tracks on Frantic Flowers that will be appealing to a much wider audience then his release on Frantic Flower's sister label Frustrated Funk. Classic Detroit techno energetic and uplifting with smooth effective basslines.

Review: Maximum techno from Luka Baumann that heralds the return of Emergence after an almost 2-year silence; the label that brought you releases from Regis, Christian Wunsch, Grovskopa, etc. Here is some techno that doesn't jump on the minimal bandwagon! After a break of far too long, Swedish/Croatian label Emergence strike back with some proper machine music. Started by Archae and Grovskopa, in Malmo, Sweden in 2001, Emergence aims to release music on a continuum of change, to support the development and expression of artistic ideas and to create a forum for the new. This record contains two epic tracks of pagan techno by the Croatian pope of techno and part-owner of Emergence - Herr Luka Baumann. Known for his piss-in-the-face attitude and cock-hot releases on labels such as PSNZ, Main Out and RAS, Luka has become a name on the lips of many. Expect nothing but the wicked!
