Review: Jeff Mills has always tried to do things differently, but few could have foreseen his collaboration with classical pianist Mikhail Rudy. Back in February, the two men joined forces to write, and subsequently perform, a soundtrack for Henri-Georges Clouzot's unfinished 1964 film L'Enfer. When Time Splits is a recording of that performance, with Rudy providing evocative piano motifs and thoughtful solos, accompanied by typically spacey, sci-fi inspired electronics from the Detroit maestro. At times it's willfully discordant, at others immensely beautiful. Throughout, it remains a fascinating study in combining the worlds of modern classical, jazz, ambient and experimental electronics.

Review: Jeff Mills and the Zanza 21 project have been workmen away on this new one for sometime. It is an accumulation of ideas that take jazz principles and apply them to electronic music, or more specifically the theory that "music is most useful at the point when it touches the soul of the listener, until then, it's just sound." As such Jeff layers up his acoustic and electronic instruments - all of which he plays himself - into star gazing tunes with rich astral melodies and big, bulky grooves that are easy to attach yourself to but hard to forget. This is the first of many releases that are already done and dusted, so keep your eyes peeled for more.

Review: Another one from the Tresor vault - this one dates back to 1994. Once again it's Sir Jeff at his unrelenting best, bringing his Detroit influences to the nascent post-wall Berlin techno scene, and once again the BPMs hit the heart attack zone. If you want an idea of what those parties were like in the vaults of the former old Wertheim department store, just listen to "Whisper" or "Basic Human Design" and you'll start to get an idea of how amazing this scene actually was. Mills, we salute you. This is one for the ages.

Review: The classic album that first truly broke Jeff Mills into Europe 20 years ago gets a 21st century snazzing-up, and it's remarkable upon re-listening just what breadth there is to the earliest of the Detroit hero's output. With some sly shuffling of the running order, nothing can prepare you for the switch from visceral intensity of "Jerical" to the piano-led stompathon "Changes Of Life". The complexity within Mills' production is staggering for the time, as frantic, interlocking pulses of rhythm come daggering out of his machines. Still it's the more accessible cuts such as "Late Night" that should find favour with DJs new to the Purpose Maker's ways.

Review: For those of you who may have become enamoured with Jeff Mills' avant garde techno projects with, say, the Montpellier Philharmonic, or his minimal musings on his Something In The Sky imprint, then let's take a quick trip down memory lane. The year is 1992, and a young Detroit producer has moved to Berlin, bringing his own unique brand of stripped back, utterly banging techno with him. Waveform Volume 1 was his first ever EP, released on Tresor's record label in 1992, and it's an uncompromising mix of pounding 909s, relentless BPMs and screeching synths. This was (and still is) truly boundary pushing stuff.

Review: Back in 2016, legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen approached techno pioneer Jeff Mills with the idea of working together. A series of live gigs and off-the-radar studio sessions followed, with the first fruits of their joint efforts finally appearing on this must-have 10". As you'd expect, the duo's collaborative work combines Allen's traditional Nigerian polyrhythms, traditional Afrobeat instrumentation, and the far-sighted, sci-fi inspired electronic futurism that has always marked out Mills' work. The result is a quartet of cuts that could arguably be described as retro-futurist Afro-tech - all delay-laden beats, basslines and organs subtly sparring with gentle acid lines, Motor City electronics, beguiling deep space textures and shimmering, 31st century motifs. It's arguably Allen's stylistic contributions that dominate, but that's no bad thing.

Review: Sir Jeff returns with this sampler 12" featuring highlights from his recent album The Power, released on his own Axis Records imprint. Exploring a similar, albeit slightly denser, sonic terrain to his recent Something In The Sky releases, A Side tracks "Microbe" and "The Exchange" are imbued with tense loops and an almost overwhelming sense of intangible menace. Flip over for the stunning, hypnotic chiming melody of "Spiral Therepy" - backed by a beat so delicate and fragile you have to really listen to realise it's actually there. The beats disappear entirely on "The Diagnosis", leaving ghostly echoes and synth washes to tiptoe cautiously across the bleak sonic landscape. A supreme exploration of restraint from one of electronic music's most relentlessly forward-thinking characters.

Review: 2012 marks 20 years since the formation of Jeff Mills' Axis imprint, and two decades since the release of his first album. The Messenger, his 17th full-length excursion, is the fourth in the Detroit techno great's continuing series of faux sci-fi soundtracks. Underpinned by a complex, far-fetched storyline - we won't bore you with the convoluted details - the 14 tracks that make up The Messenger veer from cybernetic Detroit techno-funk to crystalline ambience via stargazing grooves and, of course, classic Mills loop techno masculinity. As with last year's equally admirable 2087, The Messenger is true to the original ethos of Detroit techno. It's emotion-rich, ambitious, melodic, far-sighted and laden with meaning.

Review: Given his well-known love of futurism, it seems fitting that Jeff Mills has chosen to eschew the CD format in favour of releasing his latest album on a specially designed 40mm square "USB cube". While the format is novel, it's the music that makes The Jungle Planet an essential purchase. It sees Mills in full-on sci-fi mode, recounting a tale (in instrumental form, of course) about "the last waking human" on a trip to "the planet of planets". In the wrong hands, this would be a pretentious mess, but there's no one better than the Detroit legend at creating alien worlds using synthesizers and drum machines. While not everyone will get the concept, few will have any complaints about his far-sighted blends of bleep-heavy ambience, swooping soundscapes and wide-eyed techno futurism.

Review: Yet another absolute must have re-press on the Tresor imprint of some classic Jeff Mills. "The Extremist" is Jeff Mills in uncompromising, relentless form with four varying takes on the track that opened his 1994 Waveform Transmission Vol. 3 album. The original mix is hard, highly compressed industrial machine funk of the highest order. Next up the "Fusion" mix sees a two note string sample fight for it's life against a barrage of schizophrenic percussion. Flip over for the most straight up techno moment on the "Retro" mix with the synth melody practically riding the hi-hats like an exercise bike. Lastly we have the "DNA" mix which is what the likes of Dave Clarke and Laurent Garnier were dropping back in 1994 - a real aggressive slice of techno which is not for the faint hearted.

Review: More conceptual techno from the The Wizard. Jeff Mills presents the Domino Effect, the first installment of 12" EP from Jeff Mills new solo LP, Free Fall Galaxy, the ninth chapter of his "science-fiction story" Sleeper Wakes and first since 2014's Emerging Crystal Universe. It is a sublime serving of Millsian intergalactic ambience on "The Hunted", while "Solar Crossroads" sees the man employ his classic, cyclical minimalism on this bleepy and hypnotic groove full of rich strings his magical 909 touch. On the flip he takes us deeper into the void on "Rabid Star Clusters" with its snarling use of 303 acid and "Triangularism" which keeps things stripped and minimal on this wonderfully executed method of trance induction. Often imitated yet never matched, Mills still has it and this EP is brilliant from start to finish. Oh... And that cover art!

Review: For the latest volume in his ongoing retrospective series "The Director's Cut", Jeff Mills has decided to offer us another chance to own his most iconic and celebrated track, "The Bells". All techno heads should know the 1996 original version that kicks off the EP, but if you don't, it's a stomping, heavily percussive romp rich in looped synth stabs and chiming melodies. Here it comes accompanied by the stunning version found on the "Blue Potential" DVD, in which Mills performed live with Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra), and bonus cut "The Homosapien Sapiens", which appears to be a previously unreleased cut. While of interest, it's the version of "The Bells" that make the EP an essential purchase.

Review: For those who dig Jeff Mills but don't have the time or money to hoard records from his extensive back catalogue, the ongoing "Director's Cut" series showcasing hard-to-find gems from his discography is a godsend. Volume five begins with a trip back to 2015 and "Solar Cycles" - an alien-sounding, otherworldly mid-tempo techno loop jam - from the limited edition, USB-only "Proxima Centauri" album. Side B begins with the bleeping tribal techno hustle of "L8" from 1998's "Skin Deep EP", before Mills offers us a chance to drift through space via 2006 track "Above Waiting Worlds", which is one of his most intergalactic and cinematic dancefloor cuts to date (and that's saying something).

Review: For those new to Jeff Mills' vast - and largely incredible - back catalogue, the Director's Cut series should be essential. Like its predecessors, this fourth volume gathers together various versions of killer cuts previously produced and released by the Motor City legend over the past two decades. Highlights include deep space techno workout "Deadly Rays (Of A Hot White Sun)", the densely layered African percussion, low slung bass and echoing organ stabs of "Gateway Of Zen (Percussion Mix)", the bleep-heavy electro/techno fusion of sweaty workout "999" and the alien-sounding, minor-key hypnotism of "The Industry Of Dreams". Each track is accompanied by a separate "audio commentary" from the man himself, which is ideal for those who love to hear artists talking about their work.
