Techno
Machine Alliance
Symbiosis
Technology Dream
Ode To The D
Review: In recent years, the producer, label head and DJ Kerrie Anderson has been gaining attention for her powerful and riveting techno sounds. The 'Machine Alliance' 12" offers four heavy and classically-fashioned techno tracks, with the title track an intense all-out energy full of tension and sensory overload. 'Symbiosis' is a heavily chord driven banger while keeping things on a sinister level and the Surgeon-like 'Technology Dream' a dark and unstoppable builder. Lastly, 'Ode To The D' is the ideal piece of futurism that is worthy of the Detroit name. For those who like their techno sci-fi as hard as it is banging, this EP should be right in your wheelhouse.

Review: Tresor joins forces with Carhartt – a company that can trace its roots back to the Motor City – to celebrate techno’s two premier cities, Detroit and Berlin. The formula is devilishly simple: brand new cuts from artists based in one of the two cities, with stone-cold legends being joined by rising stars. There are headline-grabbing contributions from Juan Atkins as Model 500 (the warped, alien, dub-flecked and Cybotron-esque electrofunk of ‘I.D.L.E’) and DJ Stingray 313 (the industrial electro clank of ‘Dynamic Instability’), plus fine contributions from JakoJako (the early morning techno hypnotism of ‘Metal Goat’), AMX (the wonderfully hazy, deep and dubbed-out electro shuffle of ‘Your Body’) and Erik Jabari (the mind-mangling modular madness of ‘Screamore’).

Review: For the legendary label Tresor to put out a breakbeat record is something very rare. The ardent techno label for over 30 years is clearly telling us without saying, how good this music is. Tresor is always in touch with rave music though and it's not fully surprising that Tresor would support any music that is so reminiscent of the old skool days like Digital Entropy is. Datashader rises from the depths to give us their wicked debut. The EP is an audio onslaught that combines blistering breakbeat gems like 'Velocity 04.22' with eerie sci-fi pieces like 'Sync Out Off'. The AFX like 'Fong' and 'Sub Osc" are early favorites from those who have heard samples of this haunting record. It is rare to see the power of rave, breakbeat and IDM presented this well on one record.

Review: Tresor is a titanic techno brand that has very much had a large say in how the genre has sounded over the last few decades. The German club and label now welcomes Parisian artist UFO95 into the fold with his Backward Improvement EP which draws on elements of all the genre's many niches from London to Detroit to Berlin. 'Cogitor' is thumping and wried up with warped lines, 'Sexual Tension' has a more seductive sound with a rubbery and funky bassline and 'Fragment' then brings panel-beating loops for peak time showdowns. There is pure sci-fi atmosphere to the bells and the sonorous synths of 'Solar' and 'Gargk' closes down with a glitchy and ambient-laced breakbeat monster. Great variation makes this a useful EP.

Review: Tresor dig deep into the vaults for a reissue of one of Robert Hood's many seminal releases. This one comes under his The Vision alias and is an impressive 30 years old in 2023. It came originally in the year he left his Detroit hometown and the safety of the Underground Resistance label and head to New York with Jeff Mills. The music is fast and furious and funky as you would expect, with funky techno drum foundations and mind melting details up top. It set a ridiculously high standard and hasn't aged one single bit. All hail Hood.

Review: DJ Shufflemaster (real name Tatsuya Kanamori) first saw fame with Tresor's release of the 'EXP' album all the way back in 2001, at a time when the Berlin clubbing institution was already aiming to shine a light on techno scenes beyond its own walls. Vastly ahead of its time, the tracks on the album (now once more called to our attention via this reissue) are what we'd have considered ourselves more liable to encounter in the UK in the mid-2010s; tracks like 'Onto The Body' have a broken beat feel to them, and many tracks verge quite readily off the edge of 4x4 kick drum orthodoxy. A compressed and washy techno album drawing on every influence from dub to Brummy sound.

Review: After a five year album-hiatus, the iconic UK artist is back with his highly-anticipated release, Crash Recoil, which has found its home on the equally iconic Tresor. Drawn from the spontaneous experimentation of Surgeon's live sets, Crash Recoil spans eight MIDI-sequenced, hardware-reconfigured tracks, inflected with the artist's signature penchant for raw and rugged sound. The first track, 'Oak Bank', builds up to a throbbing core - a cacophony of driving percussion and side-stepping melodic layers that shift expertly in and out of focus. 'Second Magnitude Stars' moves with a tidal rhythm, like waves retreating backwards across shingle before crashing forwards once again with force. 'We Laugh & Clap At The Circus' is, texturally speaking, a touch lighter and more spacious, yet still replete with a sense of spiralling chaos. 'Leadership Contes' feels closer to ground-level - earthy yet eerie atmospheres meld with drums that seem located in the subterranean. A masterful album from the techno key-player - well worth the five year wait.

Review: Tresor is celebrating 30 years in the game with a series of special reissue projects. This one really goes way back to almost the start, when Juan Atkins was already defining the early techno sound. For this one he linked up with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann in 1992 for a second iteration of the 3 Men in Berlin project. The monumental results join the dots between Detroit and Berlin across a collection of timeless cuts that meld bassline funk, hypnotic minimalism and soulful machine sounds into propulsive, emotive dance floor joy. The unbridled energy and cosmic elegance of 'Jazz Is The Teacher' might just be the highlight.

Review: Regis and Female's Againstnature album from 2000 gets the full reissue treatment here by Berlin label, Tresor. Released under their given names Karl O'Connor and Peter Sutton, the record is a noted zenith of the Birmingham techno scene of the era. It has had a major influence on the music that was released in the years after and has here been remastered for a fresh double vinyl pack. As well as the original sounds, there is also 'Theme From Streetwalke,' a track that was previously released on a Tresor compilation. The tracks are heavy but relatively stripped back. They're packed with texture and atmosphere and never less than hugely compelling.

Review: Given the reissue wave of Drexciya-related material has been trucking for more than 10 years now, it's quite remarkable this masterpiece from the late James Stinson has waited so long to be reissued. Originally carried on Tresor in 2002 as one of the final releases he put out in his lifetime, the one-off Shifted Phases project feels loaded with context not least with the album framed as 'Cosmic Memoirs'. This is unmistakably Stinson's work, veering from rubbery machine funk freakery to the melancholic, back room electro mood of The Other People Place, all presented with due care across three discs by the Tresor faithful and including two outstanding tracks which were previously only available on the CD edition.

Review: Legendary Berlin techno label Tresor welcome Oscean for a standout debut EP. Oscean is a collaboration between Argentinian scene-leaders Sebastian Galante, also known as Seph, and Andres Zacco. They bring a propulsive sound and dense arrangements across the four cuts. Each one moves fast, with 'Feral' having scraping textures and rubbery drums racing onwards, 'Spacion' riding on a supple drum line that bubbles and boils and as a searching synth pans about the mix and 'Austraal' ends in Millsian style with electronic funk buried deep in its bones. It is the scuffed up broken beats of opener 'Spiral' that wins us over the most, though.

Review: Electro lovers will be foaming at the mouth over this one - it is a super luxe reissue of some seminal UK electro from the late 90s. It channels plenty of Drexcyia vibes with its cinematic sound and sci-fi overtones and sounds as good now as it ever has. All of the tunes on it have been remastered from DAT tapes and included along the way is 'Original Flow' which wasn't on the album before and has never been released. It was only recently unearthed having been written in 2000.

Review: Angela and Daniele are an Italian pair from Naples who work together as Fireground. They turned heads from their first EP Dualism on Tresor in 2021 and have remained with the label since. It is there that they return with what is presumably a new series, Refreshing Part, as this is installment one. They have a frantic and frantic techno sounds rooted in the 90s school of box banging. 'Never Sleep' opens on that manic tip before 'Gaze' is a little more stripped back but no less potent. Elsewhere the caustic textures of 'Into A Diamond' are almost enough make your eyes water.

Review: Tresor's extended focus on reissuing old Drexciya and Drexciya-related projects continues here with this version of Shifted Phases' 'The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J Rosinthrope'. A short-lived alias of Drexciya's beloved James Stinson, Shifted Phases' only LP here is one of few affiliated projects that has remained out of print ever since its rather low-key release in 2002. Wildly popular despite it, the music heard on the album is undeniable early electro, locking in a characteristically frank, almost meek, yet astro-nautical electro sound. Scratchy crud and sonar feedback beeps extend to the deepest sonic reaches on this one; you better salvage it from the abyssal waters of history (by copping it), and quick.

Review: Since opting to release more music under his given name, DeepChord man Rod Modell has largely stuck to dubbed-out ambience and heady drone soundscapes. His latest full-length is a little different, though, offering up club-focused cuts that mix his usual fuzzy aural textures and dub-fired motifs with up-tempo techno rhythms. By his standards, it's a very forthright set, with highlights including the noise-soaked stomp of "Reiki", the thrusting heaviness of "ITO", the hypnotic slam of "Jade" - where breezy, early morning electronics flutter away above tough drums and a mind-altering bassline - and the boisterous peak-time techno anthem "Scrawler".

Review: For the latest volume in their essential reissue series, Tresor has decided to offer up a brand new edition of Robert Hood's celebrated 1994 debut album, "Internal Empire". A quarter of a century after Hood first committed it to wax, it remains one of the Motor City maestro's most potent and inspired works. It effectively defined his throbbing, minimalist style, with heavy and hypnotic cuts such as the bleeping "Minus" and deep and wonky "Within" perfectly encapsulating the stripped-back genius of Hood's production. If you've yet to acquire a copy, we'd recommending grabbing one of these: in truth, no techno collection is complete without it.

Review: Given that XOR Gate is a new project from Drexciya member and all round Detroit legend Gerald Donald, we'd expect copies of Conic Sections to fly off the shelves. It helps, of course, that's the mini-album is little less than inspired. There are hints of Drexciya's alien electronics throughout, but little in the way of punchy TR-808 beats or booming bass. Instead, Donald treats us to a sublime selection of futurist soundscapes, experimental doodles, deep space ambient compositions and trippy, horror-influenced electronica. It's effectively the distilled essence of Motor City futurism with the dancefloor grooves removed and some creepy modular electronics thrown in. Which, we think you'll agree, is an enticing proposition.

Review: French techno expert Marcelus has had a long-running affiliation with Berlin's Tresor, with three stellar previous editions on the imprint which displayed his powerful signature grooves. The Singular Records boss serves up some of his most fascinating techno derivatives yet here on the Magnet EP. From the restrained fury of the title track with its sweltering polyrhythmic action, the deeply evocative "Parenthesis" with its all-consuming and textured atmosphere accompanying a tunneling aesthetic, to the raw fury of "Say It Again" on the flip. This jagged and frantic groove experiment features a collage of tonal and metallic samples to create a strobe-lit, greyscale soundscape. Rhythmic expression at its finest.

Review: A new Donato Dozzy album is more than news for us, it's a celebration. Apart from the fact that Italy's contemporary techno king is one of our favourite dance music producers, he is also extremely suited to the LP format. Each and every album the Dozzy has put out has, in some way or another, been and remained relevant even years after its release. Much in the same way, his debut alum for Berlin's mythical Tresor comes in the shape of Filo Loves Acid, an eight-track showdown of the man's magic on the 303. Moreover, unlike his previous albums, where space and ambience was significantly explored, this LP revels in its focus of the dancefloor while still retaining a vision and a narrative throughout. A crisp, magnificent production is accompanied by rolling drum machine beats, infinite acid loops, and Dozzy trademark sound. Quality.

It effectively defined his throbbing, minimalist style, with heavy and hypnotic cuts such as "Master Builder", the bleeping "Minus", deep and wonky "Within" and angular "Multiple Silence" perfectly encapsulating the stripped-back genius of Hood's production. If you've yet to acquire a copy, we'd recommending grabbing one of these: in truth, no techno collection is complete without it.

Review: Vienna's Claudia Anderson first appeared on the scene a few years back on Marcelus' Singularity, with the brilliant Hysteria EP, which was followed up three years later with "Liquid Forms". It is clear that is about quality not quantity, as her third offering Synthesis (her first in four years since) is clear evidence of. The heads down tunnel vision of "Structure" is perfect for those strobed-out moments, as is the textured and hypnotic treatment of "Involvement". On the flip, the raw repetition of the title track is reminiscent of Surgeon's early work and "Momentum" goes down a different route altogether on this freeform electronica workout.

Master Builder (Sandman Option) (4:04)
Quartz (6:29)
Review: The unstoppable techno juggernaut himself, Robert Hood is back on Tresor with some of that minimal machine music he basically defined back in the 90s. "Master Builder" is a masterclass in proper minimal techno, using a thrifty set of tools to make for utterly immersive, time-slipping techno. The subtly shifted "Sandman Option" mix of the track moves the position of the looping bleeps to create a different groove around the steadfast kick - juggling the two could be a lot of fun for creative DJs. Providing a different flavour on the flip, "Quartz" brings some bolder synth strokes into the mix, winding up with the quintessential Detroit track.

Kerri Chandler - "Cobal"
Marcelus - "Y02"
Maan - "Jackin'"
Review: According to the PR blurb, Kern is Tresor's new mix series and focuses on "where old meets new, and house meets techno". The first mix comes from Parisian legend DJ Deep, from which these three exclusive, never-heard-before tracks are taken. There's plenty to get excited about, from the dubwise Detroit hypnotism of Marcelus' "YO2", to the techno-tempo deep, jackin' house of Maan's thrilling "Jackin". Best of all, though, is the contribution from the ever-impressive Kerri Chandler. His "Cobal" - a fusion of loose, swinging house beats, darting electronics and starburst synths - is arguably his strongest track for some time.

Review: Tresor again opens its vault, this time skipping the '90s inspired techno for four old school house cuts from Deepside, Santonio, Xperiment and AES, all of which featured on DJ Deep's excellent Kern mix CD. Deepside opens the first volume of Kern rarities with an acid based drum dance in "III", whereas Santonio plays on looped keys and jumbled strings in "Amnesia". Xperiment hits up a plodding bass line alongside a Beverly Hills Cop sounding melody and jacking drums, and AES brings the only vocals to the EP with a classic cut of Chicago house.

Review: Borderland sees the illustrious Juan Atkins & Moritz von Oswald join forces for an album of meditative techno for Tresor. The partnership marks the first time Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald have directly collaborated in 20 years, though both have regularly assisted each other's work behind the scenes. Von Oswald played an important role in engineering much of Model 500's R&S catalogue, while Atkins supplied his mixing craft and two edits on Thomas Fehlmann & Moritz von Oswald's early '90s project 3MB. This eponymously titled album is skewed toward club-orientated electronic music blessed with a freedom for organic musical experimentation and expect to sink into a soundscape where melodic and textural motifs float in and out of focus.

Review: France's reputation for underground techno is on the rise and this new album from Marcelus won't do it any harm. The Parisian producer has already a string of acclaimed releases on Tresor and Deeply Rooted House, and Vibrations showcases his ability to craft killer, purist grooves. "Forplay" and "Steel Drums (Take 2)" are heads down, tribal rollers that will cause chaos on the dance floor, while "Transient" is a dense, drum track that takes its cues from the Lost / Cosmic strain of 90s techno. On "Multiply", Marcelus flirts with the legacy of Sativa and Dave Tarrida to create an unpredictable, sprawling groove. In between these pillars of functionality and wild abstraction Marcelus also delivers the introspective "Initial Sense" and the loose house groove of "Funky Datas". It's one of the bravest techno works of 2016.

Review: Kern Volume 3 is Objekt's first commercially available mix and it's clear that he invested an inordinate amount of time and effort into it. Despite being limited to 70 odd minutes, he has crammed a total of 36 tracks into the mix, but it never sounds rushed or frenetic. If anything there is an inordinate amount of space, with Objekt breaking the mix down midway through with the glitch dream textures of Anna Caragnano & Donato Dozzy's "Love Without Sound". Before that happens, there's the abstract woozy intro, supple metallic rhythms, throbbing bass-heavy steppers and atmospheric synth-led electro and the ebm of Jeff Mills' Final Cut band to contend with. Kern also includes a number of rarities, like Kirk De Giorgio's 1992 deep techno classic "Nebula Variation" as Future Past and the jittery 808s of Pollon's "Lost Souls" a one-off release on the short-lived Scopex label. These showcase Objekt's ability to bring forgotten gems to the fore, but would mean little without his masterful programming. This is evident throughout the mix, but is most notable when he moves from The Persuader's foggy techno through Oliver Ho's Birdland edit of Blaze's "My Beat" into the aforementioned Pollon.

Review: To complement Objekt's masterful 36-track session for their irregular Kern mix series, Tresor have put out two self-explanatory 12" samplers. Kern Vol. 3: The Exclusives sees contributions from accomplished electro technicians Clatterbox and Polzer as well as Bristol's rising Shanti Celeste and Via App of 1080p fame. "Aspect Ratio" from Clatterbox and Celeste's understandably incandescent "Lights" both feature in a movement on the mix that is a real highlight of Kern Vol. 3, but DJs will be happy both have been pressed her for full club play. On the B-side, the swift and snappy metallic tunnelling of Polzer's "Static Rectifier" could be mistaken for an angry DJ Stingray, whilst Via App's "From Across The Room (Edit)" is a more playful, if pensive affair.

Review: If seeking out exclusives for his Kern mix on Tresor from artists as varied as Clatterbox, Via App and Shanti Celeste demonstrated Objekt's standing within the techno community, this 'Rarities' sampler reflects the Berlin DJ and producer's deep knowledge. The four tracks here see Objekt dip into the yawning chasm that is the techno archive, selecting '90s-era tracks from Fret, Mono Junk and Kirk Digiorgio's Future/Past alias, complemented by a turn of the century curio by Pollon. Of these four, it's "Stuck" from Fret aka Mick Harris that stands out in particular, a dark and sleek rhythmic kick that feels like a hybrid of Autechre and Hessle Audio.
