Space Zone (6:36)
Etching (6:35)
Restriction (7:09)
Trapid (6:49)
Review: Zwen makes a strong impression as they circumnavigate the stars to impart their strain of machine music. This first release on Trapid has little to no reference point, placing all the focus on the tunes contained within. "Space Zone" aptly launches this mission in a muscular fashion with a hefty kick and some strafing synth blasts, while "Etching" gets tangled up in a more tightly wound loop with a raw, deliciously early 90s finish. "Restriction" keeps things stripped back, but it's certainly still orbiting the same quadrant as the other tracks. "Trapid" switches focus by embracing a more dub techno-informed approach, and Zwen does a masterful job of capturing that vibe too.

Gewissen (1:05)
Rhythm Tension (10:33)
Zephyr (6:13)
Rehash Repeat (7:11)
Review: Brawther's Negentropy label has already carried gold star material from Ron Obvious and the man himself, and now it's the turn of debutant producer Zweizig to show off his wares. This assured 12" leads in with the ambient intro "Gewissen" before the crisp minimal funk of "Rhythm Tension" kicks in with its shimmering and shuddering sound design pinging around the dexterous beat. "Zephyr" is a smoky affair with a snappy broken beat and lots of subtle organic matter writhing in the middle distance. "Rehash Repeat" takes things deep and dubby to complete the set, all mellow hiccupping rhythm accents and hazy melodic phrases.

Review: Increasingly spoken of in hushed tones by the techno community, a new album from the Giegling collective will always be regarded as a big event. It's through the Forum offshoot that has previously delivered fine long players by Vril and Prince Of Denmark that Giegling now present Aufgang, a debut set from mystery production unit Zum Goldenen Schwarm. Previously spotted in fits and spurts, Aufgang represents the most substantial statement from Zum Goldenen Schwarm yet and it's eight tracks of strange atmospheric pieces and immersive deep electronics already feel like another classic Giegling long player. How the title track develops over it's three parts to a quite epic 15 minute finale is particularly satisfying to hear.

Dr Beckett (3:06)
Review: Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint got off to a promising start last year with the Wrong Headspace 12" from Latvian artist N1L. Gamble's purview for the label is clearly international as this second UIQ release dips into the world of Zuli, aka Ahmed El Ghazoly, Egyptian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ based in Cairo. Limited to 400 copies. Jagged beat experiments merge with high definition sound design plus classic and exotic instrumentation on "Robotic Handshakes in 4D", it's an apt title, really. New frontiers in bass music are explored on "131001G", texturised minimal techno on "Ahmed?" and rather abrasive bass assisted noise experiments like on final track "Dr Beckett". What next for UIQ? Consider us intrigued.

Review: Krasnoyarsk, Siberia based producer Roma Zuckerman is back on Nina Kraviz's esteemed Trip imprint with a collection of sound of Rome style mental grooves on Stage Of Loyalty. From the dubby redux of opener 'Syntax Process', the tribal trance of 'Frequency Hole 4', to
the factory floor acid of 'Disposition part 3' and even a bit of an electro influence creeping into the elevating groove of 'I Like You' - it's altogether a solid set of secret weapons.

Zsa Zsa Laboum - "Something Scary"
HN03 - "Doughnut Dollies"
Review: Having taken some 12 years to reach its 20th release in fine style with that Neil Landstrumm/Matt Whitehead double header, the Don't imprint overseen by Jerome Hill swiftly (for them) usher in their next release which features two sublime 1988 New Beat classics from Zsa Zsa Laboum and HN03. Laboum's "Something Scary" is perhaps the archetypal New Beat track, commencing with a sample lifted from the dodgy 80s B Movie "The Entity" and displaying some excellent percussion and a powerful and obscure acid line - it still sounds excellent some twenty four years later. On the flip is the R&S classic "Doughnut Dollies" from New Beat icon Eric Beysens under his HN03 moniker features. It's grubby industrial arpeggio sounding equally vibrant today - especially pitched way down to -8 like the New Beat guys used to do!

Review: One of the first questions you have when reading up on this release from Zsa Gang is "just who is Pissflaps?" Future Times captain Max D and Jordan Jordash are Zsa Gang, and the four cuts on this Beehive Rhythms 12" were laid down in Amsterdam with the assistance of Gal 'Juju' Aner and Pissflaps, "a local drunk who is often hanging around the studio". Spend some time with the four untitled tracks and such thoughts recede as you focus on the music itself which bristles with the freeform intensity we've come to expect from an Off Minor release and is filled with the tough, off the grid drum arrangements Andrew Field Pickering has on lock down. It's four hot releases out of four for Off Minor now!

The Dreamers
The Dreamers (Leo Anibaldi Variation)
The Dreamers (Kc1 Variation)
Review: Together Giorgio Gigli and Obtane form Zooloft, and together they have produced some of the darkest, deepest, techno known to man. Their release for the Cannibald label sees the two nestle in among a host of like-minded Italians who share a love for brooding techno in the longform, pulsating basslines and ambient textures. "The Dreamers" typifies this exactly, as careful manipulations of sound provide sinister deviation and ghostly variations within the piece, while Leo Anibaldi, founder of Cannibald, sonically boils away any over powering bass in his remix to create something horror thematic. And then for something a little more industrial there's a remix from fledging artist Kc1, who so far only has the one storming 12" for hard-as-nails label Nachtstrom Schallplatten - which for some should be a hint of what to expect.

Review: The heat just keeps coming from the EYA camp as they swiftly follow up LONEWOLF 003 with this crucial care package from Kiev's Zolaa. Moody atmospheres abound on the stripped and stalking electro opener "Silver Needle, Golden Pain" before giving way to the decidedly cheekier acid snapper "Noctivagant". "Horiy Spokiy" broadens the remit of the record too, taking on a widescreen sound that takes in rich layers of melodic counterpoint to create a vivid soundscape that still kicks in all the right places. Then Etienne drops in a remix for the B2 which shakes things up with some breezy, feel good chords to counteract the punchy thrust of the drums.

Phonky Music (5:05)
Review: ZKY who minimal fans will know as one half of Cab Drivers now finds himself on fine French label Phonogramme with a new EP that offers up his lovely and warm analogue house jams. 'Love Train' kicks off with a nagging, wobbly baseline between silvery drum loops and fleshy bass. 'Instant Delight' has the sort of synths that bring to mind deep Detroit techno and they're paired with over sized hi hats and a serene sense of futurism. Last of all is the most playful - 'Punky Music' with James Brown samples, smeared chords and steamy vocals.

Don't Decelerate (7:03)
Review: Purist house done proper, just as you'd expect by a guy that's one half of legendary duo Berlin duo Cab Drivers: Jens Augustowsky to be exact. Here he inaugurates the new Ground Service imprint, providing alternate retrovert sounds to his esteemed Cabinet Records imprint. As heard on the epic acid shenanigans of the title track as well as "No Sleep" which rounds off the A side nicely with this hypnotic and similarly 303 assisted minimal house number. On the flip, things get funky on the loopy and infectious groover "That Track" featuring a sampled bass guitar loop over dusty rhythm patterns; simple yet effective until that epic chord progression comes fading in. Closing this fine EP out is the dark late night mood lighting of "Don't Decelerate". Tip!

Review: Originally founded in Manchester but now well entrenched in Berlin, SK Eleven continues to fly the flag for stern, unrelenting techno shrouded in gothic undertones with this essential drop from Zippo. The approach is one focused on needlepoint drum programming, running from the twitchy hats and thunderous kicks of 'Pulse & Distortion' to the snappy 909 hits of 'Xukro' on to the mind-warping arps of 'Cannot Stop Thinking', which also features Celina Marie's detached voice calling out the track title in the middle of the maelstrom. At all times it's techno delivered with an accomplished tone, making for must-check gear for any dedicated diggers and DJs.

Track 4
Review: Oh boy, another fine episide of L.A. Club Resource has dropped on us! Since the first Delroy Edwards EP on the imprint, this has been one of our favourite labels over the past year. However, this is not simply due to its house and techno releases, but more for how Edwards himself has given such creative freedom to his brainchild. While many were expecting straight floor cuts, releases such as this latest Zipcode demonstrate that Edwards and his tight-knit group of artists mean to showcase their own passions and skills. Zipcode aka Vereker - one of our own personal legends - drops four segments of noise and stripped beats. All apart from "Track 4" - a cavernous broken techno loop - all the other three tracks are pure machine noise from the depths of the inferno. Imagine Kevin Drumm loaded up on cough medicine and you're kinda close. Big.
