Review: 80s Techno Tracks Volume 1 was originally a CD-only compilation put out back in 2019 by the ZYX Music label. It has proved so popular that it now comes on a special vinyl release that packs in eight of the best tunes to feature on the CD. It makes for a fun and throwback listen that very much chimes with the current trend for these sorts of sounds - hi-nrg, eurobeat, EBM, synth-pop, industrial and new beat with a bit of proto-acid house town in for good measure. It is the unmistakable characteristics of the machines that made these tunes that make them so instantly lovable and transportive.

Review: A great compilation for fans of the techno sound of the 1980s, featuring eight rare and classic tracks from the pioneers of the genre. The tracks are presented in their original extended versions, which showcase the diversity and innovation of the early techno scene. The tracks range from the synth-pop influenced electro of MCL's 'New York' and Moskwa TV's 'Generator 7/8', to the dark and industrial sounds of Hypnopedia's '666' and Bigod 20's 'Body To Body'. There are also some examples of the EBM style, such as Aircrash Bureau's 'Exhibition' and The Invincible Spirit's 'Push!', which combine hard beats, distorted vocals and aggressive synths. The compilation also features some more experimental and atmospheric tracks, such as Moskwa TV's 'Tekno Talk' and Bigod 20's 'America'.

Review: Mario Piu is a tried and tested techno workhorse who has been at this since almost day once. He started in the golden days of the 90s and still keeps on turning out the jams today. This new coloured album on ZYX brings together some of his best bits from over those years. Review: Long-standing Dutch acid-electro outpost Zodiak Commune are back with another trip into the creepy underbelly of the scene guided by the combined powers of Sound Synthesis and Acidulant. On the A-side of the record, the pair join forces for a collaboration they call Raim, in which they deliver creepy pads, edgy arpeggios and slamming beats aplenty. 'Zenhiser 303' in particular has a seductively dystopian tone which will be perfect for when you want to take the party somewhere darker. On the flip, Acidulant goes it alone for the downright nasty machine funk of 'Institutionize Planet X' while Sound Synthesis creates a widescreen extension of the A-side vibe with the epic 'Protect Our Freedom'.

Review: Zodiak Commune has become a tried and true outpost for edgy electro in recent times, and they've been incubating the talent of Dima Gastroler across a run of releases in 2024. The run of form continues as Gastroler locks in with 'Zero Tolerance', an icy blast of machine funk with strafing synths in the classic electro style. There's similar movement sweeping across 'REConnection', albeit with more pronounced acidity in the lead lines. Review: Only 100 copies of this mystical and deeply moody 12" from Zimp Recordings main man Filthy Rich, meaning you'll have to act fast if you want one. It's well worth picking up though, not least because opener 'The Kraken (Davy Jones Mix)' is a deliciously clandestine chunk of underwater techno full of nightmare-inducing spoken word vocals and creepy electronics. The EP's other significant moment is 'Two Tone Bass', a stomping slab of fuzz-soaked industrial techno that remixer Randolph also turns into a slamming, lo-fi techno assault on the senses. Elsewhere, 'Wiff Waff (Wallpaper Mix)' is a bouncy techno roller that (somewhat hilariously) samples speeches by Alexander Boris De Pfeffel Johnson, and 'Stinky Funk' is a thrusting masterclass in weighty techno-funk.

Review: Roger Gerressen's previous album, 2017's Sushitech-released "Monoaware", did a fine job in delivering atmospheric slabs of dancefloor hypnotism that were variously inspired by tech-house, dub techno and the deeper end of the European techno sound. "Heading In A Backwards Direction" feels like a more open and expansive take on the same basic blueprint, with Gerressen quietly slipping between beat-free dub techno soundscapes (blissful opener "Fragil (Dub)"), sun-kissed tech-house/dub techno fusion (the ear-pleasing "Draxis"), deep house inspired dancefloor warmth ("Cerendipity"), heavier peak-time workouts (bass-heavy tech-house jack track "Don't Be Neutron"), crackling minimalism ("Continued Momentum") and hushed, sub-heavy goodness (closing cut "Holding Thoughts"). It all adds up to another impressively atmospheric excursion.

Review: Over the last six years, Toulouse twosome Zendid has offered up a swathe of singles for the likes of Infuse, Elephant Moon and Discobar that cannily blur the boundaries between tech-house, minimal and intergalactic electronic deepness. They continue to develop this trademark sound on debut album "In the Shell", a set rich in fuzzy (and funky) analogue-sounding basslines, dusty and glitchy beats, spaced-out synthesizer sounds and darting, off-kilter electronic riffs. While some others would have used the opportunity given by an album to showcase their eclecticism, the French pair have instead stuck to their guns and merely subtly twisted their quirky tech-house template. Given the quality of material on show, it was a wise move.

Review: Just when you think you've heard the last of Covid in music, along comes this Covid 2020 EP from Yotsume Music label head Saki Hiroaki, indicating that it was written during those most weird and dark times, specifically in the city of Kurashiki. 'I Say' (part 2) is a seriously silky deep house with wispy and liquid chords rippling out to an infinite horizon as the persuasive drums get you into the groove. 'Improvisation' is a more crisp tech cut but is still unhurried and detailed with nice deft synth curlicues and the trio of escapist gems is completed with 'TRAP'. This one again sinks you into a pillowy and gentle groove with muted chords drifting up top like clouds.

Review: Yore Records have past form in sneaking out Detroit-rooted gear from legends masquerading under pseudonyms - rumours abounded around the one-shot Trackleton release back in 2009. Now here comes P0lyrhythm with a minimal amount of background information and some highly refined machine soul referencing the origins of techno in its title. It's either an extremely authentic-sounding tribute or a sneaky gift from a pioneer, who knows for sure, and more to the point who cares? It's magical techno with pure uplift in its bones, offering the kind of restorative approach which is so desperately needed when so much club music tilts towards annihilation. Highly recommended for all lovers of the original techno sound.

P0lyrhythm is the artist behind it and the title, 'Motor City Dreams' gives you an idea of what to expect inside - Detroit-style techno with retro-future synth work. Opener '313 Hazy Days' is just that - an acidic mix of swirling pads and driving techno drums full of hi-tek soul. 'Shimmering Lights' has old school percussive sounds and singing synth patterns that light up the deeper drums and then the title cut takes off to the stars on wispy leads and sleek beats. 'Ray Eyes' completes this most tasteful of deep techno EPs.

Review: It comes as a surprise that brothers Tom and Ed Russell - Tessela and Truss, together known as Overmono - are set to release their debut album. That's because their names are synonymous with a certain bleak UK techno sound, following the trend of imagery associated with the likes of St. Etienne, Mt. Kimbie or Real Lies, plus their music and live sets have seen to a wealth of stonking tracks over the years. Review: With a run of knockout singles on XL reaching back to 2016, Tom and Ed Russell finally deliver the album we always knew they had in them. Overmono is a project which happily gorges on the best bits of rave culture and spits back out something fresh, universal and yet still headsy enough to keep the underground faithful happy. Good Lies builds on that promise in every way, threading in anthemic vocal hooks and massive emotive brushstrokes without losing that legit bite which has made them so enduringly popular. 'Is U' has an eye on the charts for sure, with plenty of big festival moments bagged along the way for their live shows and everyone else DJ sets. 'Walk Thru Water' hits a more melancholic note with St. Panther on vocals, but it's still masterfully crafted to bring out joyous escapism with gnarly synth flex on top. Something for everyone, then.

Review: Hungarian-born, Dublin-based Phil Robertson has some pedigree but Arbilla is a new name he's operating under, and indeed there seems to be a slightly more musical, less relentless angle to his once defiantly minimal sound to go with the new moniker too. He provides three of the four tracks here, from the chunky and dramatic 'Stranger Things' and the breezy, spacious 'Fragrance' to the EP's glorious title track, with its Plaid-like syncopation and spiralling melodies. Mysterious techno 'supergroup' from Detroit, Scan 7 remix 'Virtual Reality' and they whip it into thunderclapping Underground Resistance shape. Greatness in evidence whichever way you turn.

Review: The recently started Xistence Records, is dedicated to being a beacon of quality Detroit inspired techno. The label is the home base for Phil Robertson and his own music (so far). Under the name Arbilla, this is the third release on the label. The Movement is a massive classic sounding Detroit techno that would could easily be found in the UR camp. This is that large futuristic, dystopian hi-tech jazz type sound. The B-side features remixes by Biz and then Microworld. The Biz remix is more pronounced on the rhythm and works out a few additions to the original melody successfully. Australian veteran Microworld puts a bit more muscle into the groove while still keeping things melodic and up-tempo. For fans of Detroit techno, you are going to love this.

Review: The Xistence label has coaxed some brilliantly Detroit style techno out of Arbilla here. It is a still relatively new alias for Hungarian-born, Dublin-based Phil Robertson who has long since proven himself but is imaging to reach new heights here. This one follow sup his last outing here in December and kicks off with the dusty analogue drums of 'Moving Forward' which then comes as a more thumping and Motor City-slanted Suburban Knight remix. 'Windjana' is a synth laced hi-tek soul cut and 'Life Scenario' is a more driving and thumping techno sound with a groaning lead for darkened clubs.

Review: There's an irresistible machine funk and chest-beating sense of attitude to this EP from Maara. It draws on proggy techno history and trance inducing electronic futurism to make for ritualistic dances that feel at once ancient yet modern. 'Spiral 2 The Other Side' is a mind-melting tunnel of psychedelic sounds, 'Take The Wheel Miss Sweetie' is similarly but more edgy and unhinged and 'Forget The World' then gets brilliantly bouncy. The sound designs in these tracks are next level as the mighty duo waste no time in drawing you deep into their darkened world with 'Verdurous 01 [220207.2]', a streamlined sound but one with punch bottom ends and eerie pads. Review: James Bangura steps into the ring with his new Shadow Boxing EP which is named in honour of his grandfather, Carroll Daniel Smith, who boxed for the US Army in WWII. It's a punchy take on tech house from the off, with 'Hazy Recall (Airdrop mix)''s off-grid beats swinging in from all directions with same the potency as a Mike Tyson uppercut. 'Drown It Out' has a garage swing to it as it slips and sides as fluidly as Mayweather's defence and 'Shadow Boxing' floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Last of all is 'Analyze, Socialize' which will have you on the ropes and sweating in no time.

Review: Workshop is one of those labels that has always operated at the fringes of genre. Deep house and techno are the loose starting points in many cases, but artists never fail to veer off into the shadowy nether worlds that surround those basic forms. Kolorit does that here with two intriguing cuts all with the same name. The first has lumpy scattered drums, scraping sounds, ticking hi-hats and freaky noise samples all peppering them. The second has haunting chords sequences over a ticking sound that is coated in hiss and crackle. It's late night and mysterious. The third has clattering percussion and shimmering synths that rise and fall and build in tension and intensity.

Review: The latest offering from the West Norwood Cassette Library comes shrouded in mystery, as anonymous outfit Girls Of The Internet serve up four tracks of oddball electronics that swerve the usual upfront dancefloor fare that populates the label. There's still plenty of groove to be enjoyed, but the overall tone is one of leftfield analogue electronics with a rough finish and an experimental leaning. There's a pleasing directness about the likes of "Teletherapy" with its lean drums and erratic lead synth line, while "Spam Folder" creates an unhinged funk with some heavy swinging drums and oddly quiet acid lines. All in all it's a wild affair that will work for more adventurous spinners of a raw disposition, and marks an interesting diversion for the label in question.

Review: A deeply mysterious label from Barcelona, Withhold specialise in impactful trance-breaks and IDM that tend towards the vanguard, prioritising "hidden artists" whose proclivites might not be so self-promoting. This self-effacing, anonymizing tendency in dance music is often indicative of good quality, especially when done for the right reasons. It's not really something you can work out rationally, in fact; you just have to go by your best senses. And we get a good vibe from Withhold, not least from this latest long-player of curious, gushy delights. We're not sure which artists (whether individual or many) lie behind each track, but perhaps this rejection of authorship encourages deeper listening: highlights include the cleverly tricksy 'Achanhuwlmx' and the quaintly-imaged 'Order Of 11'. This album is best received by the listener at its most emotive, most cascading moments.

Review: Pressure Dome's Yussh gets busy with her debut EP on Wisdom Teeth. Flexing fully across four tracks, her signature fusion of breakbeat, bass, jungle and club hits the spot in true Bristol brutalist fashion. 'Look Mum No Hands' eases us in with a dreamy, spacious halftime trip while the recent single 'Same Same' continues to keep the subtle sense of chill with its floating chords and slinky percussion. Elsewhere 'Close Fall' sounds like it could have come from the desk of Kid Drama and dBridge's Autonomic HQ while 'Self Conscious' closes on a deep space cosmic jungle/techno hybrid. No hands, no fear.

Review: Winthorpe Electronics signs up Dublin musician and producer Daniel Jacobson aka ZOiD for his debut on the label. What a fine one it is too with a real creative freedom in the melodies and rich sense design bringing each of these curveball cuts to life. '2-Oh-Techno' is a loose mix of bumpy drums and smeared chords, zippy leads and pixelated melodies that shine bright. 'Winthrope Acrid 2C (2-5s On The 303)' is then a double-time and wonky workout with a collage of synth textures all intertwining. 'Sunrise Acid' is another unusual but effective techno cut with a happy heart and 'Megajazz Acidhops' is a final collision of synths and rhythms that leaves you wanting more.

Review: Kyle Hall and Steven Julien have been working together on and off for a whole decade now as Funkinevil. To mark the occasion they have pulled together their first two releases - namely 2012's 'Night / Dusk' and 2013's 'Ignorant' - on one new double album that very much sums up their raw house sound. The Detroit-London duo draw on plenty of their hometown's signature aesthetics, from well swung drums to soulful synths, and the results are still fresh sounding and captivatingly deep. Importantly, all these years later, there is still real emotional punch in these tunes as well as damn good grooves. Essential stuff from this vital pair.

Review: Robot Says A is a stunning EP that showcases the dub techno skills of Jukka Hanninen aka TM Shuffle, a Finnish producer who has been making waves in the scene since 2012. The four tracks on this vinyl are all deep and atmospheric, with lush pads, subtle melodies and crisp rhythms. 'Moonset' is a dreamy and hypnotic track with a soothing vocal sample and a warm bassline, followed by the more upbeat Infinity' an energetic track with a catchy synth hook and a driving groove. Over on the flip, 'Kupliva' is a collaboration with another Finnish dub techno artist, Monoder, and it features a swirling and spacey sound with some glitchy effects. Finally, 'Echo' is a minimal and dubby track with a sparse and haunting vibe.

Review: Deep88 is a producer who deals in real depth and stripped back analogue sounds. He's well informed by the classic Chicago and Detroit sounds and brings that to his own always atmospheric work. Here he arrives on Dutch label What About This Love with four more mindful cuts of classy backroom action. 'Multi Final' has hissing hi hats turgid chord stabs over rolling drums, then 'Intergalactic' releases the pressure with more lazy drums and claps, sweeping chords and wispy melodies. The cool rolling rhythms return for 'Leggera' then 'Regardless Of Everything' is a kaleidoscope of deep house colour.

Review: You can always count on Capracara to bring something a little spicy to the table, but the results are even more unpredictable when you throw UK house magician Simbad into the mix. If you like your house music extremely grubby, blippy, analogue and slightly unhinged, but still soulful, you're in the right place. 'Roubaix Cube' jerks and bumps along with all kinds of bleeps and rugged beats, and the pads sound delirious but still inject some real heart into the track. 'Prowler Report' heads further off into discordant freakiness, but there's still plenty of punch down low. 'The Ozone' is the smoother offering, with some gorgeous keys, chords and pads interweaving for a still-rugged but oh-so-sweet strain of deep house music.

Review: Announced with the most cryptic of statements and accompanied by a thousand online think pieces, the long awaited Ghettoville from Actress is finally here! Much like previous long players from the Werkdiscs boss, Ghettoville is not an album your brain will digest in one sitting, especially since it packs in sixteen tracks across the three slabs of vinyl. Described as "the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image," Ghettoville draws on all the familiar Actress signifiers with the ghostly remnants of hip hop, Detroit techno and Chicago house scattered across the album. On immediate listen there are a few standout tracks, the ragged Motor City soul of "Gaze" and the brilliant finale "Rule" but we'll let you discover the rest for yourselves.

Review: First released in 2006, 'Ceerial Port' is the ultimate wildcard in the electro profligate Ceephax's towering discography. The seven-or-eight track album does things with the electro form that few of Mr. Jenkinson's contemporaries would dare ever indulge, were it not for this initial fatherly stamp of approval. lead reissue cut 'Acid Whorl' is the foremost case in point, hard-limiting and soft-clipping a cyclonic 'whorlwind' of pitch-whacked acid effluence. Further 8-bit playtimes come in the form of 'Acid Highway' and 'Acid Causeway', recalling the feeling of scouring the outer edges of an Atari Kart game and encountering nothing but rolling, pixelated skies; 'Tough Grugoy Acid' and 'Woodlice Acid' make up the longer wavelengths on the spectrum, stomping and echo-rimshotting to ever-weighty, yet jolly ends.
