Review: Four Flies are dab hands at digging out the finest curios from the hidden depths of Italian music culture, and this is surely one of their proudest proclamations. Guiliano Sorgini recorded the soundtrack to Riccardo Fellini's TV movie Zoo Folle in 1974, and the soundtrack came out the same year. Far more than a set of modest instrumentals or functional library music, this is raging, heavy psych funk of the highest order, with raunchy riffs, bugged-out flute, intense percussive beatdowns and so much more besides. Whichever plucky diggers originally unearthed this holy grail must have lost their tiny minds, because even framed with the significance it deserves, this is an out-of-this world record we're very fortunate to have back in our reach.

Review: K.O.G. serves up new album Zone 6 Agege, his first offering for the Heavenly Sweetness label. The title of it pays homage to a small coastal suburb in Accra the capital of Ghana where he grew up. The record is an ode to its nature and was recorded back in November 2020. It is a dramatic album steep in history and traditional sounds as well as looking forward and taking Afro-jazz in bold new directions. It is a hugely expansive and dramatic listen with shuffling funk grooves, more spacious and spiritual cuts and sun kissed rhythms perfect for those warmer days.

Review: Amaro Freitas, hails from Recife, Brazil, and is propelled through life through by searching out different experiences. Venturing to Manaus in the Amazon basin in 2020 before starting work on this album, pianist Freitas immersed himself in a transformative journey that influenced his musical creation profoundly. Collaborating with the Satere Mawe indigenous community, his album Y'Y pays homage to nature and ancestral wisdom. Through tracks like 'Mapinguari (Encantado da Mata)' and 'Uiara (Encantada da Agua) - Life and Cure,' Freitas weaves tales of powerful spirits and mystical encounters. Incorporating elements from Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous cultures, the record is a significant exploration of connection, tradition, and the incandescent power of enchanted spirits.

Review: 'You Must Believe In Spring' is the celebrated 70th studio album from pioneering jazz pianist Bill Evans. Now remastered by the legendary artist of the trade Kevin Gray for Concord, the smoking, kiss-curled jazz piano great gets a full-on reminisce in stereo, this time charting his dextrous, chromatic ivory-straddling as part of a trio, with Eddie Gomnez on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums. Soft, pining and full of harmonic curiosities and indistinct tempi, it includes a range of Evans' originals and covers, including Frank Laico's 'You Must Believe In Spring' and Johnny Mandel's 'Theme From M*A*S*H*'.

Review: This is one of the greatest albums of spiritual jazz related back in the 80's by Prince Billy Mahdi Wright who is a jazz saxophonist in the underground scene of Chicago. This is his only record as band leader and it finds him link up with Eldee Young who is well known as member of Young Holt Unlimited. She is credited as bassist of this album, and what an album it is. P-VINE released it as CD this summer and now present it as reissue LP for the first time, so do not sleep.

It is a fine showcase of Counces's bass playing skills while his sidemen here Jack Shelton on trumpet, Harold Land on tenor sax, Carl Perkins on piano and Frank Butler on drums do not disappoint either. This newly reissued album has been cut from the original tapes and comes on nice heavyweight vinyl with a tip-on jacket making it a real collectors piece.

You Can Tell Me Goodbye (2:41)
I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You (4:10)
Review: Athens of The North delivers once again here with another delightful reissue of a soul classic by Bernetia Miller And The Soul Groovers. An original of this Georgian gem is insanely rare and in fact the Athens boss himself has never actually seen a copy. It was recorded in the studio of Phil Walden's studio in Macon, Georgia and Bernetia herself has said it took many takes and plenty of hard work to get the result they wanted. Backing band The Soul Groovers had their own bus on which they toured plenty and this reissue is from the master tapes owned by Bernetia. 'You Can Tell Me Goodbye' has lo-fi drums and raw horns with a yearning vocal while 'I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You' is more slow and steady and emotionally moving with a more tender vocal.

Spanning downtempo funk, robo-disco and loopy ambient, this new reissue of the album by LITA is its best rendition yet, with a new remaster shedding stellar light on the production chops of Shigeaki Saegusa. An instrumental dream for new age collectors the world over.

One of them was Yellow Spaceship which now gets a much deserved reissue on heavyweight vinyl having first landed back in January of 2022. It is a blissed out mix of Balearic and downtempo with the effervescing guitar lens front and centre wheel swooning strings and dusty, slow motion rhythms gently propel it along. Sunny, soulful and heartfelt, this is a real winter warmer.

Get The Money (2:12)
Review: Cuban bandleader, composer and rumba magician Ramon Santamaria had a huge influence throughout his 40 year career, notably writing Coltrane's famous "Afro Blue". Here are two of many stand-out cuts from his 1963 album Watermelon Man! While most the album's focus was on his Herbie Hancock cover, it's tracks like these that really gave the album its spirit and unique character; "Yeh Yeh!" is a samba shaking horn-led cut laced with crackling percussion and party cries while "Get The Money" leans back with rhythm and blues sass and a rhythm that's as powerful as Ramon's legacy. Moneymaker shaking guaranteed.

Review: The Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongo bursts through the picture with yet another rocking 7" fire starter by two vintage pop greats - we have to say, their format simply works. First up is Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer who released a countless pop records back in the '60s, and "Ye Me Le" is a soft, seductive Brazilian soul warmer complete with blasting trumpets and that inimitable South American percussion swagger. Turkey's Senay features on the flip with "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman", an incandescent lover's ballad that makes a welcome change to the more widely heard Turkish psych sound of the '70s.

The American jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and band leader very much shows off his improvisational skills on flugelhorn and trumpet while his sidemen Renato Chico on piano, Peter Herbert on bass, Dragan Gajic on drums and Tone Jansa on tenor sax do not disappoint either. This is the first time the album has been reissued since its original release and comes in limited quantities.

Review: While Americans often get much of the credit for pioneering jazz work, there are outliers like Polish jazz trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stanko who also deserve plenty of plaudits. He was right at the vanguard of the avant garde jazz scene in Europe and this album of his is one of his homeland, and the wider scenes, greatest records. He played with a quintet that was shrouded in mystery and they constantly evolved their sound throughout their careers. Wooden Music is an album that pulls together some of their finest work from free and vigorous sounds to more structured explorations of jazz.

Review: One of this year's Mercury Prize nominees, Wisdom Of Elders sees London saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings hitting a new ambitious high as he recorded the whole body of work with a troupe of South African musicians led by Mandla Mlangeni in one single day. Aptly described as afro-futurism, the collective melt down nuances of jazz, psychedelia and traditional South African music to paint a unique picture that's delightfully frenzied yet soulfully smooth all at once. From the big Rhodes washes and vocal textures of "The Observer" to the dramatic percussive tumbles and lonely trumpet of "The Observed" by way of epic multi-suite adventures such as "The Sea" and the incendiary opener "Mzwandile", Wisdom Of Elders lives up to its name with a spirit that's at once both future and timeless.

Jothan Callins was a jazz bassist and trumpeter, who rose to prominence in the late 60s with the band Olatunji before joining the Arkestra. 'Winds Of Change' is his only LP, released in 1975. Across four long pieces that seamlessly blend, Callins brings a blissful, yet more energetic and classic jazz feel to his works, and is an example of the Strata East style, . Watch out for the 4-page booklet that comes with this reissue.

But for this project he cut loose and show a more improvisational skill and free will to go off-grid It's his debut album and was recorded with the John Dankworth Orchestra featuring a young John McLaughlin on guitar, Dave Holland on bass and various other talents who all helped make this such a fine example of modern jazz, big band and orchestral styles. Tunes like 'Propheticape' swell and build to tune peaks before all energy is dissipated and the trumpet is left to rebuild. 'Altisidora' is more quiet and subtle with oboes and gelt percussion setting the mood. 'Bachelor Sam' is a wandering wonder. Lovely.

Here Dynamite Cuts gather up three essentials and press them to a 7" for your convenience, leading in with 1972's 'Why Can't People Be Colours Too?' from the Whatnauts On The Rocks album. When the break drops, you'll fully understand why it got picked - pure understated perfection. Review: Ezra Collective has described their hotly anticipated second album, 'Where I'm Meant To Be', as "a thumping celebration of life". As with their previous work, it's rooted in the band's love of on-stage improvisation - call-and-response instrument solos abound throughout - and peppered with contributions from guest vocalists including Sampa The Great, Emeli Sande and Nao. Musically, it's undoubtedly joyous, blurring the boundaries between contemporary UK jazz, afrobeat, hip-hop, dub, Latin rhythms and soft-touch electronics. The plentiful highlights include steppers-powered dub-jazz workout 'Ego Killah', sparkling opener 'Life Goes On' and the Afro-Cuban brilliance of 'Victory Dance'.

He has an enviable discography that takes in a wide range of jazz styles and the spiritual eastern leaning sounds of When The World Was One make it one of his best. It's the sort of mellifluous record that swells all round you, lifting your spirits filling you with joy and hope. Helping that be the case are the heavenly harps and shimmering piano chords, koto and bansuri flute payed by his Ensemble, but centre stage is always given to Halsall's own beautiful, heart aching trumpet playing. From bold heights to vulnerable lows, this is as good as jazz gets.

Review: Two years on from the release of their fantastic debut album, Wolo So, Balimaya Project returns with more inspired fusions of polyrhythms, percussion, heady horns, "virtuosic kora styles", contemporary jazz and traditional Mande music. It's a uniquely sweet, deep and gently sun-soaked sound - all emotive vocals, tapped out tribal rhythms, frazzled solos, dreamy acoustic guitars, glistening highlife-influenced electric guitars and sultry, soulful intent. The London-based collective has long been hard-to-pigeonhole, and it's this impeccably realised but sonically adventurous approach - along with the quality of their musicianship - that's been the key to their success. When The Dust Settles will only enhance their rising reputation - it really is that good!

Review: Legendary edit specialist and New York's Body & Soul party man Danny Krivit turns his hand to a famously spiritual house classic by Manchester band RSL that has more than a hint of gospel magic to it. Frankly that makes it perfect source material for the man and he doesn't disappoint: His work is subtle but classic, with some extra gorgeous vocal chants layered in over chunkier beats on the never before released a-side. The jazzy notes from the original and sprinkled percussion all remain next to mad drum fills. This 12" also features a 'Part 2' mix that unfolds in glorious fashion to a rapturous peak.

Review: Weldon Irvine was one of the finest American jazz pianist and composers of his generation. He released several classic albums man of which are now being reissued thanks to P-Vine, but not before being fully remastered for the occasion. Weldon and The Kats was one that he put out on his own label Nodlew Records after releasing some albums through RCA and Strata-East. It is perfectly indicative of his style and has his early work 'Mr.P.C' on it, which was recorded in 1968 with Steve Grossman on tenor sax and sometime Miles Davies associate Lenny White on drums. This one has never been reissued before so snap it up before it goes again.

They dropped their first album Welcome Adventure, Vol. 1 a while ago and it became this label's best ever selling release. Now their back again to welcome musical adventure with a second volume taken from the same now legendary recording session. Here we find just as many richly layered tunes - five in all - with plenty of improvised magic, freeform playing styles and expressive grooves taking us on a real new school jazz trip.

Review: We Jazz Records' periodic seven-inch box sets are a good way to keep up with the Finnish label's unique but often in-demand releases. This third edition is packed to the rafters with (relatively) recent treats, with highlights including the head-nodding spy-jazz suspense of the Stance Brothers' 'On Top' (which is available in two equally as alluring variations), the jaunty Steve Reich-goes-jazz brilliance of 'Erzeben Koma' by Koma Saxo, the Hamond-sporting lounge vibes of Eric Malmberg's 'Till Minne Av Lilly Lindstrom' and the experimental nu-jazz suite that is Otis Sandsjo's 'Tremendoce'. Top-notch, inventive and hugely entertaining: a must-have!

Review: Oscar Peterson had a steady thing going with Verve which carried him through his early career, but after a 14-year stretch with the label he wrapped things up with this album. The jazz pianist was joined by Ray Brown on double bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, between them tackling a number of pop songs, bossa nova, film themes and standards. Producer Jim Davis was committed to capturing the live feeling of the band and approached the recording sessions in October 1964 as such. This reissue follows Verve's exacting attention to detail, with transfers from analogue tape and presented in deluxe gatefold packaging.

It features on lead single 'I Think' none other than two-time GRAMMY-winner, Gregory Porter whose baritone voice is as smooth as chocolate. Review: Some expansive, cinematic, orchestral spiritual jazz for you here, from the trio of talents that Fumio Itabashi, Kuniyiki and Henrik Schwarz. While the latter two are generally better-known for their deep and sometimes tech-tinged house and ambient productions, the original mix of 'Watarese' (featured here on side B) is a dense, immersive jazz soundscape laden with evocative Japanese vocals, improvised piano, moody orchestration and definite nods towards vintage free-jazz. Spiritual Life supremo Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell provides the remix and, somewhat predictably, steals the show. His take is gently rhythmic, sun-splashed spiritual jazz full of hand percussion, fluid piano motifs and rubbery double bass.

Review: Unlike previous instalments in the 180g label's Wamono series, this isn't a compilation in the strictest sense of the term, but rather a retrospective. It showcases a range of killer jazz-funk and rare groove tunes recorded at Nippon Columbia studios in the mid 1970s by arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya, koto legend Toshiko Yonekawa and shakahuchi master Kifu Mitsuhashi. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the mellow, slow-burn lusciousness of 'Nanbu Ushioi-Uta' and the up-beat, guitar solo-laden brilliance of 'Hohai-Bushi', to the all-time Japanese jazz-funk classic that is 'Saitaro-Bushi' and the solo-laden brilliance of 'Asadoya Yunti', whose dazzling Fender Rhodes solos are reminiscent of the early '70s work of the late, great Billy Preston.

Review: On the first instalment in the Wamono A to Z compilation series, released in September 2020, dusty-fingered diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite.jp and Chintam focused on Japanese jazz-funk and rare groove gems recorded and released between 1968 and '80. For this speedy sequel, they've narrowed their focus further in order to showcase little-known Japanese funk slammers pressed to wax between 1970 and '77. As you'd expect, there's tons of absolute bangers amongst the 10 tracks on show, with highlights including the Blaxploitation movie soundtrack vibes of Mieko Hirota's 'Theme of Doberman Cop', the fuzzy, Hammond-sporting psych-funk of Fujio Tokita's quirky 'Watashi No Beatles', and the energetic, proto disco-funk of Hatsumi Shibata's 'Singer Lady'.

Review: Walking On The Grass is a debut long player from the much-touted Mush Tone Ensemble. The record was recorded fully live on analogue tape in Hameenlinna and though this is dense, challenging jazz, it also has a hugely uplifting vibe to it. Juha Sarkkola plays with an open heart as he leads the track from his bouncing drums while Tuure Tammi's trumpet and flugelhorn are ever restless and Tero Kemppainen's and bass structures plunge you in deep. This trio has really nailed it from the off with this debut and we hope there will be many more to come.

Review: There are seemingly no limits to the music Emotional Rescue will put out. This time they look back to the post punk scene of Bristol in the early 80s. Mouth was a short-lived outfit that put out just a couple of releases, but each one blazed a trail though leftfield percussive sounds, wave, weird jazz and electronics. Andy Guy and Rob Merrill were the main members with the likes of Nellie Hooper also in the band's orbit. This record is packed with tribal drumming and floating horns, broken dubs and avant-jazz but all with a proudly DIY attitude. It's packed with heady moments and wild steppers that havent aged a bit and still sound future.

Ireland himself is on bass, Nathaniel Facey is on sax, and James Maddren plays the drums as the group emulates trios like those of Sonny Rollins. This is busy, bluesy jazz that was all record live in one take. The tunes bubble and boil with spontaneity, the vibes are real and raw and it all adds up to one helluva involving sound. 'When You Know' is stately and serene, 'Mel's Mood' is unrelenting and 'Lips' is the more seductive offering to round things out.

Review: It's quite hard to comprehend that such a pivotal album in the history of free jazz has taken this long to be reissued. Originally coming out in 1980, Visions Of The Third Eye is a landmark piece of work which saw the untamed terrain of free jazz being navigated with a certain soulful, spiritual bent which lands differently compared to a lot of other works in the genre. New Life Trio was made up of monumental drummer Steve Reid, guitarist Brandon Ross and bassist David Wertman, and on this record they broke down barriers but never at the expense of the feeling. Now Early Future have faithfully reissued the album with an appropriate level of grandeur, remastered and featuring a 20-page zine with interviews, essays and more.

Vision arrives on the legendary Blue Note and is the ninth full-length from the singer-songwriter but the first in collaboration with Leon Michels who is an instrumental maestro behind the El Michels Affair. He brings plenty of musical richness and charming hooks and melodies to the smoky and soulful vocals of Jones. All 12 tunes are vibrant and joyous as Jones sings about feeling free, wanting to dance, making it right, and acceptance of what life brings. It's a more uplifting work following on from the melancholic vibe of her last outing Pick Me Up Off The Floor which was released early in the early pandemic days of 2020.

Review: Despite her superstar status, gained in the years following her 2002 debut, Norah Jones has refused to stick to the same musical script, instead choosing a wide range of collaborators while applying her song writing talents to a variety of genres. On Visions, she's once again evolved her sound further in cahoots with producer Leon Michels - founder of revivalist funk-soul stable Big Crown Records and long-time member of the Dap-Kings. What's on offer is pleasingly fuzzy and nostalgic in tone, with the pair conjuring up songs and sound worlds rooted in late 60s garage-soul, psychedelic dream pop, and a brand of Americana rooted as much in black American music as country. For proof, check superb recent singles 'Running' and 'Staring at the Wall'.

The album has just four tunes across two sides of vinyl and has talented musicians like Joe Henderson, Charles Tolliver, Bruno Carr, Jack Wilson and more all featuring. In an unconventional move, vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik takes the spotlight and the result is that he truly enhances the band's signature sound. 'Village Hassle' offers a unique blend of rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul - the A-side highlights Chizhik's vibraphone prowess, intertwining it with a dynamic instrumental backbeat. On the flip side, 'Monthly Rainfall' delves into a soulful journey, characterized by cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks which create an atmosphere reminiscent of slow-jammed soul with a contemporary twist.

Teaming up with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, Lage expands his horizons from the inward-focused 'Squint' to include new collaborations, including several cameo appearances from Bill Frisell on accompanying guitar and voice. Affecting and emotional; the perfect soundtrack to a Midwesternly desolate holiday or a mutual, not-too-bad breakup.

Across the album, the outfit showcases their virtuosity and creativity, blending intricate melodies with infectious rhythms and plenty of rousing horns, cosmic synths and nods to 70s fusion sounds.
