Siegfried Schwab - "Getting High" (2:16)
Siegfried Schwab - "Feel It" (2:27)
Klaus Weiss - "Time For Rhythm" (2:03)
Peter Thomas - "Documentation" (1:52)
Review: Dynamite Cuts brings the heat once more with a second volume of their Sound Music 45s series. Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Klaus Weiss then steps up on 'Time For Rhythm' with some loose, percussive funk beats that are raw and organic, then Peter Thomas closes down with 'Documentation', a more richly instrumental and multi-layered jazz-funk sound that conveys real grandeur.

Review: This all new EABS meets Jaubi In Search of a Better Tomorrow long player is the result of musical bridges having been formed between Jaubi and the releases on Astigmatic Records and collaborations between musicians from Europe and Asia and EABS members' trips to Pakistan and Poland. It is a world sound with Moogs, bass guitars, grand pianos, Fender Rhodes, clarinets, saxophones and vocals all colliding tradition with new school thinking. Hip-hop elements, improvisation and spiritual jazz and Hindustani ragas all feature in this most cultural and musical melting pots.

Review: Nina Simone has rather been written out of popular music history because of quite how confrontational and proudly Black she was. She was just as far ahead of her times musically too and this legendary album Baltimore shows why. It arrived with no promotion and no lead singles and so it was an utter commercial failure, but the sleuths of the internet have rediscovered it over the 45 years since its release and helped to make it a cult favourite now regarded as one of the best in her oeuvre. It has distinctive reggae production and of course plenty of beautiful vocals from Simone as she tackles songs written by Judy Collins, Hall & Oates, and Randy Newman.

Now the magical Latin sounds are available for all once more as P-Vine serves up a special edition 7" with 'Babalondia' and 'And We'll Make Love' making this a must-cop. They are taken from a debut album that is as good as it gets and originally came on the famed tax scam label TSG. The a-side here brings the funk with floor-filling grooves to spare while on the flip it's more of a mellow outing with vibrant female vocals getting you in the mood and the groove.

Review: The Selector Series has pulled out a big one for this year's Record Store Day celebrations. Both of these tunes are imagined classics reimagined that have a fresh West Coast jazz-funk feel and arrive on 45rpm together for the first time. The A-side has a rocky feel and is a version of The Beginning Of The End's 'Funky Nassau', while over on the other side Isaac Hayes' 'Shaft' gets a new psychedelic twist. This pari of covers by The Chuck Boris Trio are as brillaint as they are obscure and will cost you well over three figures if you can find an original. Both are remastered for this 7".

For such a long-standing, heritage label, Blue Note have recognised the renewed moment jazz is having and responded with an exciting look into those artists forging new paths. From Nubiyan Twist to Conor Albert, Maya Delilah to Reuben James, the featured artists serve as a crucial primer of what's good in jazz right now, and the hit rate is high from start to finish.

Review: It was 10 years into his career that Horace Silver made this album - the one that many regard as one of his very best - at the famous Van Gelder Studio with Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor, and Roy Brooks. It captured his quintet's transition and came a year ahed of another recording session that gave rise to his definitive hit, 'Song For My Father', which is also included as a tribute to his father, who was of Cape Verdean heritage. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is an all analogue affair that has been remastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, so sounds superb.

Review: This reissue from Jazz Room is one from the rather more obscure end of the jazz spectrum but it is well worthy of your time. Johnny Walker - not the same guy as the whisky magnate - recorded this one when he was touring the world with veteran jazz star Lionel Hampton back in 1982. The sounds that defined his signature are drenched in funk with fat beats powering them along. The excellent rhythm section work really shines through here on an album that was originally released on his own Private Press label.

Review: Domi and JD Beck are already taking the world by storm - just clock the irreverent but oh-so-sweet video to 'Smile', directed by Anderson .Paak and featuring cameos from the likes of Thundercat. The duo met by chance jamming at a NAMM convention and soon struck upon a partnership which took their serious musical skills and injected them with the kind of flippant, fun-seeking attitude that breathes new life into traditional music. They've sat in with Herbie Hancock and backed Ariana Grande, Mac Demarco and more, and now their debut album lands on Paak's Apeshit label in conjunction with Blue Note. Not Tight is cool down to the very last drop, but crucially it doesn't take itself too seriously. Domi and Beck know they've got the skills, and you can tell they're having an absolute blast messing with the jazz rulebook while delivering some impossibly sweet grooves.

Review: Of Lonnie Liston Smith's many outstanding achievements, his work with The Cosmic Echoes will surely go down in history as his finest. The six-album run from 1973 to 1976 is utterly flawless, and in the midst of it comes Renaissance. This soaring work, which opens up with the heavenly tones of 'Space Lady', sounds as vital now as it did back in 1976, and it's quite remarkable it's never been repressed since the time of its release. Well, sharks be damned, for now this glittering prize of jazz funk is available once again.

Review: Wonky meets jazz in this impressive new jazz mini-LP from Japan. Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger born in Kobe, Japan and based in New York City. 'Midnight Crisp' is Takuya's seventh studio album, entirely self-produced and following 2020's highly acclaimed 'Fly Moon Die Soon'. Learning jazz in a higher education environment, he's reapplied his skills to a new solo outing here, blending with his one true loves, afrobeat and hip-hop. The ensuing album is one of myriad midnight moods, tempered by many a virtuosic and mournful piano, digitally-edited drum brush, and trilling trumpet from the mouth of Kuroda himself.

Review: Ezra Collective has described their hotly anticipated second album, 'Where I'm Meant To Be', as "a thumping celebration of life". As with their previous work, it's rooted in the band's love of on-stage improvisation - call-and-response instrument solos abound throughout - and peppered with contributions from guest vocalists including Sampa The Great, Emeli Sande and Nao. Musically, it's undoubtedly joyous, blurring the boundaries between contemporary UK jazz, afrobeat, hip-hop, dub, Latin rhythms and soft-touch electronics. The plentiful highlights include steppers-powered dub-jazz workout 'Ego Killah', sparkling opener 'Life Goes On' and the Afro-Cuban brilliance of 'Victory Dance'.

Review: Trios: Ocean is the second of three LPs in the trio album, Trio of Trios, in which the esteemed saxophonist and winds master Charles Lloyd trinitizes to no end. Jokes aside, he is fittingly joined by two other musicians - Gerald Clayton on piano, and guitarist Anthony Wilson - to produce a holy trifecta of jazz, and a distinctly watery, peaceful album meditating on the instrumental blues.

Review: This is another fine addition to the Four Flies 45 series: it is a first-ever 7" taken from one of the few soundtracks that legendary producer and composer Paolo Ormi ever wrote (namely a rather underwhelming parody of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam). He is best known for his mix of Italian funk, disco and library music, both for underground labels but also stars like Raffaella Carra. All three of the instrumentals here are seriously funky - two of them have actually been put out before as part of this label's hard-to-find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Review: Last year, an eagle-eyed researcher discovered a genuine slept-on gem in the archives of New York Public Library: a forgotten, unreleased recording of the John Coltrane Quintet playing - alongside bass clarinettist Eric Dolphy, at the iconic Village Gate venue in August 1961. Here, that recording - now freshly mastered - is released to the public for the first time, and as you'd expect it's rather special. Coltrane is at his magical, blistering best throughout, with his band offering similarly impressive support throughout. Highlights include the only live recording yet discovered of the quintet performing 'Africa', an insanely good 10-minute take on Coltrane classic 'Impressions', and Dolphy's star turn on 'When Lights Are Low'. In a word: essential!

It's not exactly clear where, or indeed when, exactly the band came from, but their sound is all you need to worry about. 'Blue G' is a lilting, shuffling message of love and support for future generations, and from the message to the effervescent musicality, it's a no-brainer. On the flip, 'That Good Thing' is an instrumental that spirals outwards on the sweetest keys, joyous brass and dreamy guitar, driven by a pattering drum section to radiate good vibes wherever it's played.

It was recorded live on tape during the Queen 16 B-Girl battle in Berlin back in 2022. Opener 'International Cypher' brings a fresh take on funk with oriental overtones thanks to an electric Phin, which is a Thai guitar, being heavily deployed throughout over bristling drums that are raw and hit hard. On the flip, 'Queen 16 Theme' is more lively and loose limbed with a jumble of drums and expressive horns leading the charge.

These became the starting point for New Breed, his most expansive solo album for some time. Full of his usual loose and evocative jazz guitar, the set sits somewhere between lo-fi post-rock/jazz fusion, experimental hip-hop, and softly spun electronica. Regardless of style, it's a hugely evocative and entertaining collection of tracks.

Originally released in 1972, this self titled debut album has long been regarded as a classic of the genre. Formed 1971 in London, it featured musicians from Guyana, Jamaica and Saint Vincent. The name Cymande is based on a calypso word for 'dove' and symbolised peace and love. Their style was described as 'Nyah-Rock': a mixture of funk, soul, reggae and African rhythms. The band achieved their greatest initial success in America and were actively recording and performing until 1975. Then Cymande reformed and have been playing live since around 2010.

More impressively, he continues to dig for new and previously unearthed music, sharing these finds via the ongoing Jazz Dance Fusion series. Volume four - the latest - showcases 26 tracks across two CDs, mixing hot new and recent jazz dance workouts with buried treasure of all kinds. It's naturally heavy on Latin jazz, fusion and percussive jazz-funk, but also touches on samba, salsa and "Latin spoken word". In other words, it's another sublime selection from one of UK dance music culture's true underground heroes.

Review: Si Cheeba expands his emerging Cheeba's Latin Bros edits project with a reissue of the last release on the Echo Chamber label. Following the success of 'What You Gotta Say - Hey Hey!' last year, he presents two instructional tracks to prepare you for any upcoming electric boogaloo. Continuing his mission to bridge the gap between funky and soulful sounds, Cheeba offers two fresh, sample-heavy instrumental edits. The first is a lively dance tutorial with handclaps and bold breaks, while the B-side features a more alluring mix with a djembe solo, inviting listeners to try it out. These tracks are essential for any funk enthusiast's collection.

Enter this superb new album River Of Light from Ancient Infinity Orchestra. The band is made up of 14 members all lead by double-bassist and composer Ozzy Moysey. They are based in Leeds which has long disco had one of the Ukase most vibrant jazz scenes and this collective proves that with its mix of saxophonist Matt Cliffe with others on drums, bass, keyboards, harp, violin, cello, two tenors, alto, oboe, flute and percussion. This album taps deep into the spiritual jazz realm and is one of beauty, philosophy and meditative sounds.

Review: Christian Gaubert's 'Last Exit' is a French soul masterpiece. It has been carefully remastered from the original tapes and reissued here so standout rare groove gems 'Sweet Maryline' and 'Sweet and Fool Like a Child' sound better than ever. It's an album that showcases the great skills of the prolific arranger and composer Gaubert alongside guest spots from some of the key contemporaries in the French jazz scene of the 70s. Boogie and funk help colour the grooves with the likes of 'Going Ups & Coming Downs' being deep down and delicious jams with killer baselines and lavish strings that cannot fail to light up your life and swell your heart.

Review: In a discography that is jam packed with high quality albums, Miles Davis's Sorcerer is one of the standouts. Now newly reissued by Music on Vinyl, it transports listeners into the heart of 1967's avant-garde jazz landscape when it was originally released as part of Davis's Second Great Quintet era. The music showcases the maestro's pioneering fusion of modal jazz and free improvisation from the enigmatic title track to the haunting Prince of Darkness. Davis and his ensemble craft a sonic tapestry that mesmerises with every note here and Wayne Shorter's evocative saxophone, Herbie Hancock's masterful piano, and Tony Williams's dynamic drumming all help make that so.

Review: A remarkable feat in the world of jazz 're-collaboration', LA's Jazz Is Dead series focuses on putting younger and older jazz artists in the same studio, producing compilation albums of new and original music made between these fresh faces and old golds. For the 11th instalment of the series, former A Tribe Called Quest member and label founder Ali Shaheed Muhammad links up with composer Adrian Younge for an executively-produced slew of collaborations, with the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith, Tony Allen, Jean Carne and Katalyst in tow. And judging from the album's slick and knife-edge musicianship, we'll happily assert that Muhammad and Younge are the DJ Khaleds of jazz, fostering collabs we never could have dreamt of.

This time they have pressed up a sweet 7" featuring 'Come Dance With Me: Parts 1 & 2' It is a tune about a man who desires a woman who is preoccupied with someone else. It's a bittersweet sound, with Josh's incomparable vocals, soaring backing vocals and a loose, organic house vibe on the a-side. The flips side, part two, becomes a much more Latin tinged and jazz-flecked bit of funk and soul that showcases Milan's unmatched talents.

Review: Before landing a privileged spot on the legendary Blue Note label, Manchester's GoGo Penguin had released a string of LPs, through Gondwana Records, that have become notoriously difficult to find. Moreover, they are respected by the very best of the contemporary DJs, including Worldwide FM's ever-present Gilles Peterson. This deluxe edition of V2.0, the ensemble's second studio album, will provide you both with a decently-priced copy of the vinyl edition, along with plenty of added bonus takes and interludes that were missing from the original cut. Thanks to subtle waves of electronica and improvisation, GoGo Penguin are putting the "contemporary" into jazz and, along with that, providing us with an LP that is changing conceptions of the genre for younger audiences.

Review: Ary Lobo hails from the North of Brazil and has been considered something of a master of vocal indigenous styles like Baiao, Coco, Batuque and other related genres ever since he dropped his first album Forro con Ary Lobo in 1958. He suffered from prejudices against his northern musical styles throughout his career but still managed to eventually make his mark and become a real favourite and now Analog Africa has put together this vital and limited edition 180 gram gatefold album Ary Lobo 1958-1966 which collects his most standout works from all across a key eight-year period. A fine overview of an important figure in the evolution of Brazilian music.

Frankly that makes it perfect source material for the man and he doesn't disappoint: His work is subtle but classic, with some extra gorgeous vocal chants layered in over chunkier beats on the never before released a-side. The jazzy notes from the original and sprinkled percussion all remain next to mad drum fills. This 12" also features a 'Part 2' mix that unfolds in glorious fashion to a rapturous peak.

Presented on heavyweight vinyl with his striking signature artwork, its delivery befits the album's rave reviews on its original arrival. Highlights, in case you haven't heard it yet, are the awe-inspiring switch from fusion to swing on "The Next Step" the album's overall sparing inclusion of vocal that make "The Rhythm Changes" really stand out and sparkle and the attention to detail on the narrative structure on reprise notes such as "Re Run Home". A must-have for any jazz/Brainfeeder fan.

Basa Basa (4:08)
Sahara Akwantuo (3:46)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of Berlin's Ghanaian ex-pat "burger-highlife" scene may already be familiar with Lee Dodou, a singer who recorded a number of classic singles and albums during the 1980s as part of bands Georg Darko and Kantata. He retired from music in 1991, but has been persuaded to return to action by the Philophon team. This comeback single is pretty impressive all told, with A-side "Basa Basa" - a triumphantly celebratory chunk of 1960s "concert party" highlife rich in punchy horn lines and Dodou's full-throated vocals - being joined on the flipside by the slower, synth-laden "Sahara Akwantou". Brilliantly, the label describes this as "kraut-life" due to its unique (and rather good) fusion of highlife and German kosmiche.

Review: Having first made this Sun Ra reissue available in limited quantities for Record Store Day 2016, Org Music has decided to give it a full release. Spaceways showcased material that the spiritual jazz pioneer recorded with his "arkestra" in 1966 and '68, most of which eventually saw the light of day on El Saturn Records in 1974. Given that copies of that particular release are nigh on impossible to find, this reissue is more than welcome. It's as spacey, intergalactic and out there as you'd expect, with the ten-minute "Outerspace Incorporated" - all extended drum solos, cacophonous hand percussion and trippy horn motifs - and groovy "We Travel The Spaceways" being particularly potent.

With renewed interest in his musical works recently, his 1977 album Mellow Dream receives a reissue here courtesy of Japan's Solid, where Fukui continues his exploration of modal, bop and cool jazz sounds with meticulous grace and absolute mastery. Review: On the first instalment in the Wamono A to Z compilation series, released in September 2020, dusty-fingered diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite.jp and Chintam focused on Japanese jazz-funk and rare groove gems recorded and released between 1968 and '80. For this speedy sequel, they've narrowed their focus further in order to showcase little-known Japanese funk slammers pressed to wax between 1970 and '77. As you'd expect, there's tons of absolute bangers amongst the 10 tracks on show, with highlights including the Blaxploitation movie soundtrack vibes of Mieko Hirota's 'Theme of Doberman Cop', the fuzzy, Hammond-sporting psych-funk of Fujio Tokita's quirky 'Watashi No Beatles', and the energetic, proto disco-funk of Hatsumi Shibata's 'Singer Lady'.

Featured musicians include members of bands like Nucleus, Brian Auger's band, Soft Machine and Stan Tracy Group, and they all help lend the record a psychedelic, proggy aesthetic, with swirling melodies making for moody but funky tunes. Tracks like 'Mayday' put expressive solos and complex arrangements front and centre, while 'Suspension' is a more laidback joint for sinking into. The gorgeous meandering lilt of 'Summer Rain' is our personal favourite.

The a-side is a dedication to a giant of the Israeli jazz scene and a sometime mentor of Hazan, saxophonist Albert Beger, with uptempo chord work and swirling drums that make you want to spin around like you just don't care. After that bit of joyous but sophisticated jazz comes 'Old Tart', a more slow burning tune that builds through big horns, spare but dramatic chords and tumbling percussion until you are in raptures. This is likely the start of big things for this crew.

Review: These days, trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader Matthew Halsall is among the most storied names in British jazz, but that wasn't the case when he released his debut album "Sending My Love" in 2008. It seems fitting, then, that he's decided to re-introduce us to the album via a first ever vinyl edition that also includes a previously unreleased piece from the period, the bittersweet, slowly unfurling melancholy that is "This Time" (a cut that sounds like it should be soundtracking messy big screen break-ups and montages of unhappy lovers walking slowly in the rain). The original set remains a fine collection of modal-influenced jazz, with Halsall's various emotion-rich solos playing a far more prominent role than they have on his more recent albums.
