Review: Boston based psych/sludge/doom (riff monster) supergroup KIND boast a line up made of members featuring Matt Couto (ex-Elder), Tom Corino (ex-Rozamov), Craig Riggs (Roadsaw) and Darryl Shepard (ex-Black Pyramid) and finally return with their trudging, groovy third full-length Close Encounters. Following on from 2020's exceptional Mental Nudge, the material here sways from embracing their 70s indebted psychedelic roots to the more bombastic sludge metal motifs of the modern era, yet kept at a delicate precipice by the unashamedly retro vocal delivery.

Review: Drab Majesty was first set up by Andrew Clinco in the beating heart of the US music industry, Los Angeles. It's here, in a metropolis defined by both glitz, glamour and plastic, and wild experimentation and unconventional thinking, that the artist once best known as drummer in Marriages adopted a new androgynous persona, Deb Demure, and then drafted Mona D (Alex Nocolaou) as keyboardist and vocalist. That was 2016. Now here we are today, a few albums deep and faced with their latest offering. An Object in Motion takes bold strides in many directions, from the beautiful, natural ambient of 'Cape Perpetua' to goth-shoegaze worthy of Gary Numan himself, 'Vanity', the EP moves away from typical readings of genres like dark wave and takes us on a journey to a place defined by synthesised ethereality.

Review: For its next compilation, Wagram sets its sights on underground house music and assembles what it thinks are the best of the genre. It's a collection that sure will get any dancefloor going, with a focus on the emotional end of the spectrum and plenty of big players. As you would expect from a French label, this is slated towards French artists with worthy inclusions from DJ Deep, I:Cube and DJ Gregory next to big names like the one and only deep house pioneer Kerri Chandler who offers 'The Way It Goes' with Troy Denari and Louie Vega & Jay Sinister's 'Diamond Life' amongst many more.

Review: Mall Grab's Steel City Dance Discs label is one of those treasure troves of party music - it can be house or techno or whatever in between, but never is it less than electric. Salute is an Austrian-born artist with a knack for serving up classy party bangers that seem so simple and stripped back but very much are not that easy to make. His artful touch is on full display here with the euphoric loops of 'Sternenhimmel', the summery festival sounds of 'Pleasures' and the bumping house joys of 'Heaven.' Last of all is 'Ultra Pool,' another unashamedly hands-in-the-air, good-times-only house anthem.

Review: Laggy Panteli and Zeno Messis (aka Megalon) were cult techno artists back in the mid-nineties. They released seminal albums like 1994's Pandora's Box and mixed up ambient, Detroit techno, electro, European electronics and their own experiences of London's acid house scene. The good folks at Above Board have been digging in the duo's vaults and put together this collection of all of their best EPs across four crucial sides of vinyl. This is deep, atmospheric techno for the small hours with the likes of skittish rhythmic workout 'Sorcerer' (Funky Magus mix) sitting next to the widescreen acid styles of 'Semblance' (Dim B) and the shimmering leads of future tribal cut 'Transition'.

A triple tier stand for 3 synthesisers 20cm width and 7cm height.
Notes: This stand its part of a new concept in COVERUP. With differents parts, you can use to put on multiple synths, including big devices, until now, not possible with the other stands.

You can configure your setup with you like more, with two big devices, or three medium devices. Easy to ensamble, very light to move from your studio to live. Just you need 1 minute to arm and start to playing.

Your setup of synthesizers and studio equipment can change permanently and with it also the position on the work table.

Taking this into account, CoverUp developed a 3-level support, which can be set up in different ways depending on the number of machines that we are going to place and their size.

In the triple stand configuration (using all 4 parts), 3 20cm machines can be placed. deep and a maximum height of 7cm.

This space is enough for much of the hardware available today.

The triple bracket parts are assembled with screws (included) using a universal socket that holds them together firmly.

In turn each part can be used as a simple support. It is only enough to separate the parts by removing the screws and use each part as it suits us.

Each part has rubber feet underneath, so that the support does not slip and is firmly supported.

Both halves of the triple support are linked with wooden rods at various points to give it lateral stability.

The design contemplates space for the rear connectors of each equipment, so that none of them are obstructed by the support.

Measures:
Depth: 58cm
Height: 41cm
Width: 34cm

Review: Between 1964-1967 the legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter created a treasured and deeply influential body of work, among which 1967's Schizophrenia lay. On this meandering but impassioned jazz dedication to an often misunderstood mental state, Shorter arrived at the pinnacle of post-bop and gazed out at the horizons around him, producing one of his most complete and stylistically diverse artistic statements with a sextet of like-minded musical adventurers. James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Joe Chambers on drums; all came together to play some of Shorter's most enduring themes, including the unforgettable groove of 'Tom Thumb', the evocative 'Go', and the ballad 'Miyako'.

His solo work first came in 1963 then two years later he released his most unique work, Let 'Em Roll, a session with Grant Green and drummer Otis Finch also joined by vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Review: British jazz composer and trumpeter Emma Rawicz names her album title after the Greek word for colour or paint, signifying the fact that she is a synesthete - in other words, she always involuntarily and simultaneously experiences music through a second sensory pathway, colour. The condition of synesthesia is historically a perceptual puzzle that has still yet to be solved, but Rawicz basks in it here with a wonderfully impressive LP of freeform jazz. All of the tracks, with one exception, are named after relatively little-known colours, making for a wide-ranging, tolerant and thus universally harmonious debut.

Maria W Horn - "Dies Irae" (live) (21:46)
Review: Let's make one thing clear here - you don't need the technical back story to appreciate Xkatedral Anthology Series II. The second instalment in a compilation series of archival work by composers affiliated with the Xkatedral imprint, the six tracks offered are a fine advertisement for contemporary classical, whether that's the sombre feels of Kali Malone's 'Music for Low Quartet', or the celestially celebratory wall of sound that follows on Jessica Ekomane's 'First Light'. Nevertheless, understanding the framework in which these arrangements were made adds to the sense of listening to very accomplished practitioners and movements. All made between 2018 and 2020, everything on Xkatedral Anthology Series II focuses on synthetic sound and algorithmic composition languages, positioning tracks at the forefront of the point where humans and machines meet to make beautiful music.

Notes: If we are somewhat over-inundated with rock biographies right now, then you can trust The Red Krayola's Mayo Thompson to come up with something different. The second part of his 'After Math' series sees us catch up with a plot to smuggle a small erotic bronze out of Tirana and the subsequent plot twists and red herrings are as unexpected and bewildering as any The Red Krayloa recording.

Crazy BBY
Rose
Finally
Review: Taking a break from his own Deaf Test label duties, Ploy casually drops a terse three-tracker for Timedance here, returning to ravier and bassier roots. Nominally a "mission statement for the party athlete", the EP aims to defend the all-nighterers, wayward party animals and/or the ten-hour-afters-lovers, sonically suggesting that the art of the night out - nightcraft - is a fine art indeed. Or perhaps it's a lost art, hence Ploy's implicit attempt to revive it through song. Case in point: 'Crazy BBY' is the leading star, a snake-charming of unhesitant percs and giant detuned saws. 'Rose' fleshes the latter element out further, making for a clappy-happy alarma; and 'Finally' seems to suggest a quieter coda in Hessle-ific tribal drums and low-level love moans. Perhaps it's an ode to a quieter, more connected moment enjoyed among friends, towards the end of the night.

Review: Willie Henderson's 1970 classic Funky Chicken was made with the help of his backing group The Soul Explosions. As the title suggests, this is a record made squarely with the aim of making you dance and get the floor vibing. The band cooks up an irresistible and steamy mix of soul and bayou funk that explodes every track into a vibrant and vivacious rhythm. The record was initially released on the legendary Brunswick Records and this reissue comes with the original tunes plus bonus tracks, 'Break Your Back' and 'Loose Booty'.

Review: As part of the ongoing celebrations of hip-hop's 50th birthday this year, many of its greatest records are back in print. This one is one of the most universally well-known, a formative record that set an early blueprint. Originally landing in 1982, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's The Message will always be best known for its title tune, which was one of the earliest tracks to have a potent social commentary as it depicts the stress of living day-to-day with inner-city poverty. The album as a whole is a great capsule of those exciting early times.

Review: .How many albums do you think there are which have been influenced by the music of the late great jazz icon John Coltrane, either explicitly or implicitly? Well this is one to add to the list as, in 1975, Sarah Webster Fabio offered up a fourth and final album for Folkways in which her vivid musical language and distinctive voice are seamlessly interwoven with exploratory jazz sounds. Along the way she pays tribute to Coltrane as well as fellow Black jazz and blues musicians such as Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday. The album is being reissued now as part of the label's 75th birthday celebrations and what a record it is to add to your shelves.

The record was recorded live on January 6th and 7th, 1971 at Club Mozambique and showcases Green's extensive foundatiosn in r&b. When added to his next level mastery of bebop and a style that always favoured expressiveness over technical expertise and you have an enthralling listen.

Review: Hilton Felton's Family & Friends is a rare groove classic that now gets reissued for the first time ever courtesy of P-Vine. The master keyboardist has a cult following thanks to his magically mellow and sophisticated playing style. He was prolific, too, recording several great albums but none as definitive as this one, which is a sought after and pricey gem if you want an original. It has many highlights such as the fantastic jazz-funk cover of the Delfonic's classic 'La, La Means I Love You', groove-laden soul in 'The Power Of Love (It's In My Heart)' and the lively arrangement of 'Family Reunion.'

Review: The P-VINE is putting a bit of focus on the work of Think Twice right now. It is an alias of a hip hop beat maker from Montreal in Canada who also goes by the name of Specfics and is known for his work with Hyde Out and Nujabes. His take on the genre is dusty and jazz inflected and as well as his sophomore long player Rock To This Beat from 2008 being reissue don vinyl, so too is his debut, 2007's With A Loop And Some Swing. It showcases his deft, light touch perfectly with the sort of laidback and romantic grovers that sooth the soul, while plenty of great guest verses add layers of extra charm.

Review: P-VINE has got several brilliant records dropping right about now and one of them is this vinyl reissue of Think Twice's Rock To This Beat album from 2008. It was a second solo album for the Montreal, Canada producer known as Specifics and someone revered for his work with Hyde Out and Nujabes. His jazzy and dusty take on hip hop comes with plenty of rich new-soul hooks and his debut in 2007, With A Loop And Some Swing, remains a much-loved record. Thus one brings even more soul and positive vibrations to his usual lounge and laid back beats.

And the new school talent doesn't disappoint with a selection of truly deep house sounds in a couple of different styles. The first is all bottomless depths, dreamy moods and escapist pads that are unhurried and mediative. The second, 'Jazzy Dummy' (feat Kems Kriol), is more party starting with its playful distant sax sounds, lively vocals and leggy drums, then the third, 'So Fruit,' is heavy, hard-hitting deep house with superb flute leads that echo the great St Germain track 'So Flute'.

Review: Singer, pianist and composer Leila Pinheiro was one of the most eminent fixtures of the Brazilian MPB movement, and this reissue of her self-titled debut album from 1983 cements that legacy. Just 23 years old at the time of its release, Pinheiro's springboard to fame comes an expansive array of idyllic compositions, just as idyllic as the muted woodland hippie scene portrayed on its front cover. Soaring flute accompaniments and cinematic progressions push the album far beyond the usual gamut for MPB, and it's all brought together by Pinheiro's voice, which is as lackadaisical as it is wide-sounding; it veritably drips with emotion. The rarity of the original pressing might go some way prove its popular inclusion in lists of the most important albums in the genre, but we hope this Mad About reissue eschews that explanation for its blissful sound alone.

Review: Artsfest from Akron-based outfit Lemon Friends is the latest album from a group that meets to jam together once a week with "gas station snacks and various instruments to see where the night takes them." The members have worked totters in some capacity for years even though this project is rather new and that show sin the tightness of their interplay and the freeform nature of their expressive musical ideas. They are unrestrained by time or genre in what they do as they mix up Fender Rhodes, upright bass, vibraphone, guitar and saxophone over delicate drum work.

Following a string of on-point singles, the group now coalesce for a hotly anticipated debut album which delivers on the promise of those early drops. Drop in on 'Ray Gun' and let the thick swathes of brain-tickling synths send you stratospheric - this is hot and heavy boogie colliding with the loftiest prog and coming up trumps. There is a luscious vocal cut featuring Kendra Morris, but primarily this is an instrumental trip to take you very far out indeed.

It was originally recorded between England and Brazil and is the record that really cemented Digistep and Stryda's place at the heart of the UK reggae scene. Instruments used include Berimbau, zabumba and cuica with flowing melodies, samba and nyabinghi rhythms and heady Rasta messages from Dub Judah, Tena Stelin, Ras Addis, Afrikan Simba, Christine Miller, Ras B, Jeru Banton, Ras Bernardo and Levi Roots. Review: A 10-inch vinyl release from the mysterious Jane in Palma - allegedly one of the many solo aliases of producer Julian Smith - who opens up a fresh series from the WMCL Recordings label. 'Arabs Version' and, on the reverse, 'Mixup Blender', are pair of heavy modern breaks and dubstep cuts respectively, with the former following the tradition of 'Hackney Parrot' or 'Trigger Finger' and the latter laying down a punkish, industrial steppers' forward-march, in which the satisfying shift of cut-up drum samples and vocal stop-starts are heard loud and clear.

Review: The Tele Music archival reissues series continues with this rather cosmic LP from Michael Gonet, one of the many esteemed library musicians to have graced the label and library's many halls in the early 1970s. Phasing News Volume 1 captures his approach well; slow-burning synthesizers, electric pianos and percussion, coalescing into neat motifs for cosmic alien arrivals, depraved montages, and awestruck final scenes. Those harbouring soft spots for Tangerine Dream's soundtracks are likely be impressed by the likes of the 'Soul Cathedral' and 'Moon To Light' tracks, but a complete jazz-prog curveball is thrown come 'Light In The Rains', after which the album is never the same.

Dripping from this bleeding edge comes twelve strange tracks for timpani, synth and odd time signature, occasionally dipping into styles ranging from synthpop, minimalism and funk. Choice weirdo segments include the forbidden-planetary 'Phasing Percussions' tracks and the dastardly instrumental-fonky 'Devil Dances'.

It's an Argentina Breakfast, to be precise, and the first of what we can only assume will be a series of releases under this title. The Eora-based multi-instrumentalist is maybe best known as half of Angophora but when working alone he taps into the heritage of electro-acoustic greats like Steve Tibbetts. He always novels with each new release and finds and ever better balance of his own well-defined personal sound and new horizons. Review: The late great Muslimgauze has one of the most unique sounds in electronic music, even now, many year son. His fusion of the electronic and the ethnic, the experimental and the noisy is in a class of one. Return To The City Of Djinn came first back in 1999 and is the seance of two collabs between John Bolloten aka The Rootsman and Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze. It is a mash up of The Rootsman's Into The Light and 52 Days to Timbuktu albums with added Arab cultural references from Jones. There are cut up loops, glassy effects, dub drums and well rod vocal fragments that make for an atmospheric sound track to a stroll through a busy Eastern city.

Synclavier Regen Digital FM Desktop Synthesiser Synclavier Regen Digital FM Desktop Synthesiser
Cat: 960269 Rel: 19 Sep 23 • View all Synthesisers

Digital FM desktop synthesiser.
Notes: The iconic Synclavier brand returns with this digital powerhouse, based around FM synthesis but also offering additive and subtractive methods. Super versatile, with up to 98-voice polyphony and MPE support.

Supplier's Notes:
The new buck in the Synclavier stable

Synclavier Regen is the newest in an auspicious line of Digital FM synthesizers. Designed for desktop use, it contains the power of the Synclavier II DSP engine, enhanced and optimised. Full colour screen, liquid-like touch controls, high fidelity audio output coupled with a sound design powerhouse makes this the synth you always dreamed of.

Regen supports additive synthesis for full control of 24 harmonics. Synclavier have now added subtractive synthesis to the Synclavier synthesis engine, especially for Regen, allowing creation of super saws, PCM square waves, and noise generation. Or you can use samples for your carrier waveform.

And these different waveform generators can be mixed. You have up to 12 partials to use in your sound design creation with crossfades assignable to inputs such as velocity, pressure, mod wheel, and of course, keyboard.

Regen is loaded with content to get you inspired fast. There are over 550 timbre presets across 10 newly commissioned timbre libraries. On top of that, there are over 2000 royalty-free samples built-in, including over 350 selected original samples from the NED era and 2 exclusive artist sample libraries.

When you're done exploring the factory content, you'll have fun with the sound design possibilities. You can layer up to 12 partials with different sound generators (additive, subtractive, samples) then apply dynamic effects per partial. It's truly an expressive instrument, both to program and to play. Polyphonic aftertouch and MPE is fully supported and there's a sophisticated modulators section where you can apply responsive curves to properties driven by pressure, velocity, mod wheel position, and so on.

Synclavier Regen is a desktop unit measuring 310mm wide by 260mm tall and 42mm deep.

Housed in aluminium, finished with a sand-textured black and Synclavier red surround. It has rubberized plinths.

User interface consists of many silicone buttons with multi-colour backlighting, a virtual knob capacitive-touch slider with epoxy-coating. A VK display is included as well as a main modal display that shows current parameters, user settings, timbre library, etc.

Over 40 years of synth design has led to this product. It's a sound-designer's dream in a timeless desktop package.

Sound-design Capabilities

Advanced DSP synth engine, as used on Synclavier II, has been extended for Regen.
12 separate tracks of multi-timbrality, assignable to MIDI tracks and keyboard ranges.
Up to 98 simultaneous voices. Voice count is dependent on system load and is likely to be much higher in typical scenarios.
12 partials per timbre. Each partial can be 1 of 3 oscillator synth modes: additive, subtractive, or samples.
Additive mode supports coefficient and phase control of 24 harmonics.
In samples mode, up to 128 samples can be placed on the partial's patchlist.
Subtractive can have a noise generator or up to 9 de-tunable continuous sawtooth waveforms.
Hybrid (resynthesized samples)
Timbre-level effects, including:
Stereo reverb algorithm with pre-delay and library of presets.
Highly-optimised multi-mode filter with sophisticated filter envelope.
Bit-crusher (for use with additive, sample, and hybrid modes).
Frequency modulation (FM) controllable per partial (all modes) with envelope.
Sophisticated modulation system that allows many Regen parameters to be controlled via MIDI, LFOs (24 per timbre), or driven by envelopes (24 per timbre).
Approx 300MB of sample space in memory = 100 mins @ 48Khz 24-bit mono shared across all active tracks and partials.

Hardware

Balanced stereo output through XLR connections at pro-level 4dBu. Designed for studio and home use. These are DC-coupled for maximum bass impact.
Single-ended TS stereo outputs, also DC-coupled.
Convenient headphones TRS jack for monitoring master audio with independent volume
control. For headphones in range 32O - 300O.
DAC circuit is designed for ultra-low noise floor. 11dB of headroom over nominal level. A
measured 130dB of dynamic range. 24-bit, 50kHz sample rate, as per Synclavier II.
Hybrid sound design engine: original Synlcavier II hardware is modelled in software.
High quality audio components throughout, including a precision temperature compensated crystal oscillator for jitter-free digital audio.
Two glorious full-colour sunken displays.

Review: Pop's newest sensation Teddy Swims drops his latest project I've Tried Everything But Therapy, evoking to the New Zealander's unquenchable thirst for the outbound excesses of life. Intended, in his own words, as his last music project before he goes into therapy, the album mixes plodding pop ballads, pristine vocal deliveries, and motivational highs-and-lows to produce a confident array of songs in the key of life. All the tracks are massive cinematic uplifts, a mood which ensured by its booming production, and themes dealing with heartbreak, baggage, memory and exigency.

Review: Garage innovators Time Is Now show they are a long way from done yet with another raw and essential 12" to kick off 2024. This one comes from Network and kicks off with 'Lose Control', a track that has it all - the bass-heavy low end, dusty percussion and alluring r&b vocal. 'All Night' is another that will pop right off with its zippy synth lines and seductive female coos, 'Falling' is more fractured in its digital melodies and chopped-up vocal refrains and the flipside keeps the good times coming. 'Desire' has warm and steamy, 'Be There' is an old school number and 'This Ain't Love' is a sixth sizzling cut with more original vocals really making the tunes standout.
