Review: So far we've yet to hear a duff track or release from Flamingo Pier, a hybrid Anglo-Kiwi crew whose vibrant and colourful music combines a plethora of musical influences in pursuit of disco-fired dancefloor gold. There's tons of goodness to be found throughout their latest collection of cuts, from the drowsy, Holy Ghost style deep disco warmth of opener "Tripping Up", to the sprightly '80s electrofunk brilliance of "Boogie Meltdown". Sandwiched in between you'll find two more heaters: the kaleidoscopic, synth-heavy nu-disco cheeriness of "Indigo" and "Jungle Groove", a tight and throbbing proto-house number that sounds like the missing link between Paul Simpson and Escort.

Review: We won't be the first one to have pondered over the question as to exactly what Glasgow puts in its water. Scotland's second city has always matched creativity with grit, a ridiculously warm welcome with ferocious independence that could intimidate those from less proud corners of the world. Here, one of the town's art-pop trophy pieces delivers an impressive addition to their storied catalogue which explore new avenues without jarring. Psychedelia abounds in subtle form. Tracks like "Feel You More Than The World Right Now" spring forth with a positivity that seems truly otherworldly in the current global climate. The staccato cacophony opening of "Despotic Sway" soon fades into more of a reflective indie offering, while the country-tinged "Black Cat" takes a different path altogether. It might fall on "Thing Of The Past" to crown the album, its propellant rhythm taking all ears on its infectious course.

Review: Four years - or thereabouts - is a long time to wait for any band to follow up an album. It's particularly long when the band are Peggy Sue, and the preceding LP was "Choir Of Echoes"; for us one of 2014's most startlingly engaging efforts, at the time positioning them in the upper echelons of alternative rock. "Vices" leads by the example of its title. At times the sound here is filthier than any bad habit, and twice as compelling. Matching swooning harmonies with sparse guitar work, it grows, grooves and chugs into your conscious like a slow juggernaut, eerie yet hopeful, deeply atmospheric but also immediate and inescapable. There are lashings of 1960s pop, with the unapologetic noisiness of anthem-heavy Gen X guitar bands careering through any sweet imagery conjured by more delicate moments. Excellent work.

Review: It's hard not to be impressed by everything Grimes touches. From the moment this album's trippy downtempo titular opener emerges from submerged depths of sound you know the latest from the Canadian is going to be a special moment in pop. As if to accentuate our point, "Delete Forever", two tracks later, introduces acoustic guitar tips while still retaining deep timbre and utilising effects to hypnotic ends on those hummed vocal loops. "IDORU", which closes out the record, feels far more playful, simple keyboard and whispered choral lyricism introduced with a backing track of bird song, before broken club beats fall in. It might be most fitting to finish a write up on the aptly-titled "You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around", its guttural bass guitars and EDM-leaning vocal stabs not the only things reminding us the world would be weaker without this one.

Review: In the run up to the big reveal of her second album, lush-yet-broken Los Angeles singer songwriter Alexandra Savior was interviewed by Billboard magazine. Therein she expounded on the difficulty in making an album coherent, and judging one's own work.

It's safe to say "The Archer", produced by Sam Cohen's exceptional ear and released on Danger Mouse's ever-explorative and daring label, is both coherent and wonderful. "Soft Currents" opens a relentlessly high scoring track list with sombre, heartfelt vocals and piano, confirming Savior as an artist who can easily adopt more traditional aural styles. Things don't stay that way for long, though. "Crying All The Time" wouldn't sound out of place on a Lynch or Tarantino soundtrack, "Bad Disease" owes much to bluesy R&B, and "Saving Grace" packs a real psychedelic punch. We could go on, but the point should be pretty clear already.

Review: The latest effort from British post punks Wire sets the record straight. And then re-emphasise the point. Having been the first word in the genre for five decades now (credited with its invention in 1976), 'Mind Hive' confirms that longevity hasn't killed creativity.

It certainly sounds like the band in question, but they are still looking for new reference points to further immerse us in their aural world. By that we're talking elements of dream pop, surrealist ambience, metal and psychedelia, resulting in an album that cuts through the noise and grabs you by the earlobes. Opening on the ferocious 'Be Like Them', only to close on the hugely atmospheric and, at times, meditative 'Humming', it's destined to satisfy long term followers while enlisting a new generation of fans.

Review: With the combination of band name and album title this one's always going to be a bit of a tearjerker, packed with self-reflection and self-loathing. No regrets, though, as Greg Gonzalez muses on sensuality, the loss of those we care about, the loss of self to another and the endless yearning of the human heart. Shades of Lord Huron and a wealth of gloomy shoegazers can be felt, but even though "Cry" represents a next step for Cigarettes After Sex - edging into more minimalistic territories - it's still immediately identifiable as this band, and so won't fail to instantly resonate with avid fans. Packed with an exquisite, opiate balladry at once heartfelt and heartbroken, it's hard to tell whether this is exactly what you need to hear when living through your blue period or precisely what you shouldn't listen to. Either way, it's quiet impact is immense.

  1. Burning The Heather (radio edit) (4:02)
  2. Decide (4:44)
Review: Britain's most successful synth-pop duo might now be in their early sixties, but the Pet Shop Boys are still capable of crafting near perfect songs - as their forthcoming album "Hotspot" proves. There's plenty to enjoy on this taster single, which like the rest of the album was co-produced by Stuart Price. "Burning The Heather" is a warming and autumnal affair, with their usual bright synths being toned down in favour of jangly acoustic guitars and the kind of bittersweet electronic sounds that dominated their superb 1990 album "Behaviour". Flipside "Decide" is a more upbeat and throbbing affair that includes a rare vocal from the sometime "third sexist man in pop" Chris Lowe (albeit one drenched in auto-tune).

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: 13 albums in, Dan Bejar enters his the terrible teens of his oeuvre with another terrifyingly good piece of work, deftly weaving darkness and dread into pop epics destined for the pantheons at some point in the future. It's sinister, brooding and melancholic stuff that aims to move listeners emotionally and dancers physically.

Perhaps what's most remarkable is the production process; an open-ended creative approach that took years of archive work and made it fresh through intimate recording sessions that allowed ideas to evolve off the cuff. This might explain the conversational sensibilities of reflective ode 'The Raven', the lackadaisical jam that is 'Cue Synthesizer', or the title track's veritable cosmic warm up vibe. Guitar shreds, warm keys and soft pads rarely felt so satisfying or effortless, the result being an album that sounds complete despite reaching for seemingly impossible heights.

Review: If you're not up for words like "lovely", "blissful" and "gliding" on record then this one may not be for you. Then again, we'd sooner recommend trying it on for size than skipping past outright, as Tennis prove themselves to be every bit as compelling and captivating as they are seemingly sitting - or more accurately lackadaisically couching out - on some fluffy cloud overhead.

It's perhaps unsurprising that Tennis is married couple Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, who wrote the nine-tracker while doing what some couples fantasise about, and others think of with fear as to whether it would wind up with one of them killing the other. Four months is a long time to be at sea with your partner, but in this instance it seems to have only united them. Balladry but of particularly exceptional quality, it's hard not to feel jealous at the ties that clearly bind this wife-husband duo.

Review: Time marches relentlessly on as does the immortal sound of iconic Manchester band Joy Division. At the heart of Unknown Pleasures was the alarming vocal talent of Ian Curtis. His alien wails, echoed expressionistic vistas of urban alienation over No Wave tribal beats and Gothic guitar impressions. And despite the breathtaking intensity of the angular acid comedown "She's Lost Control", the soaringly depraved detachment of "New Dawn Fades" and the proto-slowcore "Candidate", opening track "Disorder" remained the piece years ahead of its time and most immediately enduring. This anniversary record arrives almost forty years to the day after it was originally released, splashed out on 180g ruby red vinyl with an alternative white sleeve to resemble the original and legendary cover design. Unquestionably authentic, Unknown Pleasures was a vision so uncompromising and haunting that each track was worth its length. This commemorative reissue, then, continues the celebration of one of the most important albums of our time as well as highlighting the record as a landmark in music-design crossover history.

The 12" release of "Eisbaer" has long been a must-have amongst fans of off-kilter, dancefloor-ready new wave, and this replica reissue includes all three tracks featured on that version. Opener "Eisbar" sets the tone, with the bands weary, half spoken/half sung vocals rising above a backing track that's powered forwards by relentless bass guitar, screeching riffs and broken computer style electronics. "Film 2" is a heavy, synthesizer powered workout peppered with delay-laden drum hits and odd noises, while closing cut "Ich Liebe Sie" is a clicking and quietly melodious affair that's almost entirely electronic.

Review: Now you've stopped shouting "there's a new Nick Cave album" at everyone who walks past, comes near or might possibly be in earshot it's about time we dived into the contents of the legendary troubadour's 17th studio album. Be warned, though, what lies beneath is deep and immersive enough to drown in, and even the most effective divers wouldn't find a body. A suitably morose introduction, we think. Digressions aside, "Ghosteen" is a majestic, powerful, operatic experience that will change nobody's opinion of Cave and his band, The Bad Seeds. The works are just as innovative, poignant, graceful, melancholic, euphoric and inescapable as ever. Too many adjectives? We're making no apologies. Consider the title number, if that's not too obvious a focal point. Sparse yet grandiose, narrative driven but metaphorical, organic and earthy yet making incredible use of a theremin. Almost impossibly good, sit back and let it wash over your mind.

Review: If Tindersticks' album, "No Treasure But Hope", represents the band embracing all their chamber pop sensibilities, delivering something that has plenty of operatic beauty and camp accessibility, "See My Girl", an EP which owes its title track to that LP, is something of a counterweight. Sort of.

Aside from the one piece taken from said record, here we're given something that's far more expansive and much less interested in genre lines. "A Street Walker's Carol" could well soundtrack some 1970s New Hollywood road movie. The aptly-titled "Blood & Bone", featuring Sidonie Osborne-Staples, invokes the most distorted of electro-rock tomes. Le Chien's re-rub of the titular adds pop-roots-reggae nuances into the equation. Consider this a curveball warning if "No Treasure", their 11th studio album, was your first experience of this incredibly fluid and varied band.

Review: Scuzzy, sludgy, creeping, muscular and delicate-enough to feel there could be a break in its bones at any moment. King Krule returns with a third album that once again tears skin open to reveal the heartfelt emotions within its lo-fi, muttered, pseudo-rock tones. Referencing Sleaford Mods on heavy opiates wouldn't be too far from the mark at times, although we're not here to simply use touchstones - Archy Marshall deserves better than that. Despite almost everything on "Man Alive!" being so quiet, it packs an incredible level of noise. Subtle licks, strange details and a deceptive depth would be one way to describe the whole package. Grunge tones ("Supermarche"), lo-fi blues pop (""Don't Let The Dragon) Draag On") are just some of the nuances it's possible to pick upon, making for a wholly original work that captivates, relaxes and uneases in equal measure.

Review: It has taken five years for FKA Twigs to follow up her astonishing first album, "LP1". With that kind of timeframe, you can't help but have high expectations for the finished product, expectations "Magdalene" more than meets from the off. An artist in the truest sense - with every step and stage in the recording process controlled by her - it's an accomplished comeback for a woman who in the last half decade has experienced both personal loss and major physical challenges. Don't expect more of the same, then, but instead a talent finding new purpose and new confidence following difficult times. With the ever-impressive Nicolas Jaar giving a helping hand, the result is a raw, honest record that's deeply personal, full of self-reflection and, ultimately, accepting and positive. Not to mention destined to be on repeat. Her position as one of the UK's most vital and compelling acts re-confirmed.
